The high quality of MAN Genuine Brake Linings is unequalled – as confirmed by a product comparison* carried out by the independent inspection institute DEKRA. Brake lining pairings from various manufacturers together with MAN  Genuine Brake Discs were tested for performance, wear and thermal cracks. These individual tests were performed in accordance with applicable standards and provide information on the most important quality characteristics of the brake linings.

* The tests were performed in accordance with internationally recognised regulations and were monitored and documented by the Ger­man inspection institute DEKRA. The documented tests are not representative tests, so the results cannot be generalised. In other words, the results published here refer solely to the products named in the test and not to others that are also on the market. The DEKRA test records are archived at MAN Truck & Bus and may be viewed at any time.

The test.In the test series, the performance and fading behaviour of the friction materials were measured and evaluated, then compared with the characteristics of the other products.

Fading is the chemical/physical phenomenon that decreases the braking effect at in­creasing operating temperatures – from a technical point of view, increasing operating temperature decreases the coefficient of friction between the brake lining and the disc.

Fading may occur in driving operation, for example during continual braking on a down­hill drive. Slight fading or a constant coefficient of friction gives the driver an even and predictable braking feeling and greater safety due to shorter braking distances.

The test.In the wear test, brake lining and disc wear subsequent to standardised braking operations was measured and evaluated, then compared with the characteristics of the other products. For this purpose, the test parts were measured and weighed before and after the wear test, while interim measurements were made during the test after the program had been running for specified periods of time.

The decrease in brake lining thickness is the most important criterion for judging wear. Abrasive wear is caused by friction between the brake lining and brake disc. The lowest possible wear is thus a significant quality feature of the useful life of brake linings.

The test series in the temperature range up 300°C is especially important in the wear test. It reflects the operating state in normal road deployment. By contrast, increased wear at higher temperature ranges is generally desirable in order to prevent linings from glazing.

Weight advantage of MAN Genuine Brake Linings.Measurements of the weight prior to the wear test showed that MAN Genuine Brake Linings were – at the same thickness – the lightest of the products tested.

Greater lining weight at the same lining thickness in conjunction with a heavy vibration load may cause more damage to brake components. Lower lining weight can lengthen the useful life of a disc brake as a whole by a considerable amount.

The test.In the thermal cracking test, the condition of the respective brake disc after application of a specified thermomechanical load by the brake linings was in­spected, evaluated and compared with the condition of the other products.

The most important test criterion here is material fatigue in the form of thermal cracks in the brake discs. Thermal cracks occur as a consequence of uneven temperature distribution and the resulting thermal stresses within the brake disc. To a certain extent, the occurrence of such cracks on the surface can be tolera­ted. However, a crack right through a brake disc necessitates expensive replace­ment.

MAN’s own specification requires 30 test cycles, which is more than the custo­mary industry standard. If a brake disc cracks though to the cooling duct, the test has been failed.

Only the combination with MAN Genuine Brake Linings achieved the specified 30  test cycles. The thermal cracking test of the other brake linings had to be stopped prematurely after five and six test cycles respectively because the brake discs in each case were cracked right through.
