T he heat of July days, with 30 and more degrees of external temperature recor- ded, did not discourage the Lion’s Coach to be tested in Italy on 347 kilometers of the Milan-Genoa-Milan route by BusToCoach Magazine. Especially now that it boasts the new de- sign and the technical innovations intro- duced at the end of last year in order to consolidate its presence on international markets after over 20 years. The Lion’s Coach which has been tested is the 13.1-meter two-axle ‘C’ version (available also the three-axle version) and it features a demo equipment of what can be added for customization. lowed load of 19.5 tons (axles allow a load of 8.000 + 12.600 kg) and is fitted with 315/70 R22.5 tires (as standard it is fitted with the classic 295/80 R22.5).Optional equipment includes the toilet, the kitchenette, the driver’s bunk, a route di-splay, space for two wheelchairs with ac-cess through a high door and an hydraulic lift built on the first axle, a spherical and removable tow hook and rear ski rack.With this equi-p m e n t t h e Lion’s Coach C has a curb weight of 15,076 kg (with full tank and without driver) and costs about 300 thousand euro. The standard list price is 260 thousand euro.For the road test it was ballasted to 18,000 kg (the current limit on Italian roads for two-axle buses). As for the entire Lion’s Coach range, it is powered by the 12.4-li-ter MAN D2676 LOH engine (vertical) with

T he Lion’s Coach C floor height is 1,500 mm, it is

completely flat (without raised base for the seats) and is ac-cessed by a 5-step rear staircase and a 4-step front one plus three lower internal steps behind the driver area. Passengers can en-joy 51 MAN Deluxxo reclining seats, upholstered in leather and with a folding armrest on the aisle side.In the rear door compartment, on the right there is the toilet complete with sink, electric hand dryer (and smoke alarm) and a 120-liter water tank. On the left of the staircase there is the access to the driver’s bunk and, above, the TM Quick Ser-vice kitchen unit equipped with

a 40-cup coffee maker, boiler, sink and drawers.The open luggage racks allow stowage of almost two cubic meters of hand luggage (includ-ing sections closed with doors). Individual equipment sets with LED reading lights, like the rest of interior lighting, are

inserted in the lower part. For climate control, it is equipped with a 38 kW Spheros cooling system and floor convectors powered by the Thermo 350 heater. The multimedia system, the USB sockets and the Wi-Fi network complete the comfort features. •

T he new driver’s seat of the Lion’s Coach features a more

comfortable distribution of the switches, with new control panel under the window. The heated window has also been improved, now with almost invisible incan-descent wires, which can be pro-vided upon request with stratified safety glass.Climate is managed separately from the passenger compartment. The driver’s seat is an Isri ProAc-tive with pneumatic suspension, adjustable, heated, with lumbar support and a 25 cm longitudinal stroke.The continuously adjustable steer-ing wheel houses the infotainment controls and display menu on the left of the dashboard and the cruise control and ACC buttons on the right. On the right side of the dash-board, there is the climate con-troller and the Multimedia Coach (MMC) with GPS function and a 7-inch touch screen display,

which is used also for the images taken from the reversing camera. In front of the hostess seat there is a 56-liter cockpit fridge. •

maximum power output of 420 hp (309 kW) coupled to the 12-speed TipMatic Coach automated transmission.Consumption is on average with Euro 6 buses manufactured by the competitors, ie above 4.5 l/km (4.55 to be exact) achie-ved by travelling at the high speed of 81.6 km/h. It should be underlined that the air conditioning system has always been in operation and that the equivalent amount of AdBlue (4.5% of diesel consumption) is also included in the average consumption.Some functions have helped to reduce con-sumption: Idle Speed Driving (keeps tra-velling at low revs from 1st to 6th gear) and Speed shifting (fast gear changes for 10th, 11th and 12th gear), as well as MAN Ef-ficientCrui-se with Ef-f i c i e n t R o l l t ha t t akes a d v a n t a g e of the vehi-cle’s inertia, automatical-ly shif t ing transmission to neu t r a l position on downhill roads. The effect can be seen from the 5.95 km/l recorded in the downhill sec-tions that increase the overall average to 4.99 km/l on motorways.Performance was good also on the road, ensured by the Premium Comfort Valve (PCV) hydraulic damping system on the air suspension which minimizes rolling and pitching and increases driver and passen-ger safety during braking. Obviously, du-ring the maneuvering it is necessary to be aware that the vehicle is 13.1 meters long and has an overall diameter of 24.6 meters. But the absence of the third axle enables a luggage capacity up to 11 cubic meters (without toilet).Inside the coach, transmission soundproo-fing is good and there’s no junction cre-aking, a sign that assembly was completed carefully. D2676 6-cylinder engine with common-rail injection. The bus tested was powered by a 420-hp engine (309 kW) at 1,800 rpm and a peak torque of 2,100 Nm available at between 930 and 1,350 rpm. For particularly de-manding applications, the 460-hp version (338 kW) is also available.The Euro 6c emission standard is obtained through the combi-nation of partial exhaust gas re-circulation, SCR catalytic con-verter with CRT filter, which in turn includes the diesel oxi-dation catalyst (DOC) and the diesel particulate filter (DPF).It is coupled to a 12-speed MAN TipMatic Coach automatic trans-mission (built on ZF As-tronic) with MAN EasyStart starting aid and integrated ZF Intarder. Soon it will be replaced by the new version built on the ZF Traxon.Alternatively, it can be coupled to the ZF EcoLife six-speed au-

tomatic transmission. The axles with independent sus-pension on the front and PVC (Premium Comfort Valve) tech-nology on both axles are brand-ed MAN. •
