of Business. The goal of this course is to help students develop their interdisciplinary decision-making skills for addressing contemporary business problems. In addition to integrating the traditional fields of business (accounting, finance, marketing, management, computer information systems) this course requires students to address a variety of different topics, such as social issues, diversity, environmental concerns, global/cultural differences, ethics, economics, critical thinking, problem identification, problem solving, communication skills, quantitative analysis, technology, current events, and politics. Through the use of cases, presentations, class discussions, lectures, and current periodicals, students will be exposed to the complexities of conducting business in a changing world. Throughout the course we will concentrate on the primary issues of running a business enterprise. In particular we must ask: “What must managers do, and do well, to make a company a winner in the game of business? How does each decision affect other areas of the company?” The mission of the course is to explore what good strategic management is and how it results in superior business performance. As you tackle the subject matter, ponder Ralph Waldo Emerson’s observation, “Commerce (business) is a game of skill which many people play, but few play well.” COURSE OBJECTIVES In addition to obtaining course specific content related to the field of strategic management, this course seeks to assist students in developing the following skills:

1. Critical thinking—by having students evaluate and analyze current business problems and formulate new recommendations

2. Stakeholder theory—students will demonstrate their understanding of the various stakeholders and their impact on the organization through class discussions and assignments

3. Ethical decision making—students will be required to identify, assess, and evaluate ethical situations and formulate a cogent and comprehensive solution to business problems

4. Teamwork—students will develop teambuilding skills by working in teams throughout the course of the semester, with the end result of this teamwork being a formal presentation.

CLASS ASSIGNMENTS

Since this course has been designated as a “writing intensive embedded experience” and must meet the requirements set out in Core 39, there will be several written assignments throughout the course. All course assignments will be team exercises and will be completed and graded on a team basis. Students should participate equally in

Page 4: Management 452.NO1, Policy Formulation and Administration ...STRATEGIC ANALYSIS (Term Project) The strategic analysis will be comprised of: Assignments 1-4 after being corrected/revised

developing and writing all assignments. Details and due dates for all of the assignments can be found on the Blackboard web site for this course. The due dates for all of the assignments are listed on the course syllabus as well. Given that part of the purpose for the written assignments is to help students improve their writing skills, students should take special care to make sure that all steps have been taken to ensure that all assignments are well written and have been proofread and free from grammatical errors. Each assignment will cover a different stage of the overall strategic management process and will be broken down into five different components: 1) SWOT analysis, 2) Industry analysis, 3) Visions/Mission statements, 4) Alternatives, 5) Recommendations. All five assignments will make up the final strategic analysis. Assignments 1-4 will be completed throughout the semester and will receive feedback/comments/instructions/corrections, etc. from the other teams, as well as from the professor. Students should make any necessary corrections/changes/additions etc. to assignments 1-4. Once the assignments have been revised they will be included in the final strategic analysis as appendices. NO excuses will be accepted for late assignments and ALL late assignments will receive a grade of zero. All assignments are due by 4:30 pm on the date they are due. Please submit all your assignments using the assignment function in Blackboard. Do NOT email me your assignment. Please note that only one team member needs to submit an assignment. STRATEGIC ANALYSIS (Term Project) The strategic analysis will be comprised of: Assignments 1-4 after being corrected/revised and your team’s recommendation for the company. Each of the previously graded assignments (1-4) should be revise and address the comments made by the professor. Please make sure that you revise and correct your previous assignments (1-4). The final component of the strategic analysis will include a detailed explanation of the team’s recommendations for the company they have been researching. The purpose of a recommendation is to TELL the company what they should do moving forward from this point in time. This means that you should not use words such as could, might, or possibly. In addition, do NOT recommend that a company do “research or conduct a survey” and then decide what they should do. I want you to tell them what you believe they SHOULD do and explain WHY they should do what you recommend and then explain HOW they should implement your recommendation. Please be sure to explain WHAT you believe the company should do, WHY they should follow your recommendation, and explain HOW they should do it. Make sure that you include a detailed explanation on HOW your recommendations will be implemented. So, I want you to tell them HOW to do it. Be sure to give step-by-step instructions on HOW the company should go about putting your recommendations into action. This should include a timeline for your recommendations. The strategic analysis is due by 4:30 pm on STUDY DAY, which is the Wednesday after our last regularly scheduled class meeting. MFT/ETS EXAM Everyone taking MNGT 452 is required to take the MFT (major field test). The MFT/ETS will be administered on campus on March 20, 2018, which is Assessment Day. Someone from the

Page 5: Management 452.NO1, Policy Formulation and Administration ...STRATEGIC ANALYSIS (Term Project) The strategic analysis will be comprised of: Assignments 1-4 after being corrected/revised

Office of Planning, Research, and Assessment will contact you as to the time and location of the exam. The exam will be taken on-line in a computer lab. I cannot assign a course grade for students who fail to take the MFT. Please contact Jeanne McAlister at [email protected] if you are unable to take the MFT at your assigned time or have to make other arrangements. TEAMS Students will be assigned to teams by the professor. Each team will consist of approximately five members. Each team will choose a company to research over the course of the semester, so be sure to pick a company that all team members are interested/excited about. Please contact the professor with the company that your team has chosen as soon as possible. Part of working in a team is learning how to work with other people that may and likely will, think differently from you. It is important to develop the skills for working with a variety of different people. I can assure you that you will be working with people that have different opinions, personalities, backgrounds, and experiences throughout your professional and personal lives, so it is important to develop the necessary people skills early on. However, there are circumstances where a team member may refuse to engage in the team process and refuses to be a productive member of the team. In the event that such a situation arises, a team may terminate a member who is not contributing to the team effort. If it is determined that a team member is not pulling his/her fair share of the work, the remaining members of the team should contact the noncontributing member and explain their complaint/concerns/issues and seek to resolve the problem. If this attempt at reconciliation does not result in a workable solution the members of the team should submit a letter of termination to the instructor. The letter of termination should contain the following items: name of team member to be terminated, a statement stating that the team has met with the noncontributing member, discussed the matter and were unable to reconcile the problem, state the reasons why the member should be terminated, and the signatures of team members endorsing the termination. At this point the person will be terminated from the team. The individual who has been terminated will then become solely responsible for an individual strategic analysis on a different company. The termination process must be completed and delivered to the instructor by 4:30 PM on Monday, April 2, 2018. PEER EVALUATIONS At the end of the course each, and every student, will be evaluated by their team members. There is no special form for peer evaluations. Each student will be asked to evaluate their team members by grading them on a scale from 0-100 and then giving a brief narrative supporting the grade that was given. If everyone in your team worked well together and participated equally on all of the assignments, then you do not have to turn in a peer evaluation for your team members. If I do not receive a peer evaluation from you, my default is that everything went well and that all team members should get the grade that the professor assigned for the strategic analysis. However, if you believe that one or more of your team members did not contribute equally to the team assignments, then you should provide me with a peer evaluation for just those team members. An average score will be calculated for each team member and their grade on the strategic analysis (term project) will be calculated by multiplying their peer

Page 6: Management 452.NO1, Policy Formulation and Administration ...STRATEGIC ANALYSIS (Term Project) The strategic analysis will be comprised of: Assignments 1-4 after being corrected/revised

evaluation score by the team strategic analysis grade. For example, if your team received a grade of 80% on the strategic analysis and the average of your peer evaluations is 70%, the strategic analysis grade that you would receive is 56% (80 x 70%). Peer evaluations will be anonymous and will not be shared with team members. Therefore, it is of utmost importance that you work well with your team members. I recommend that students develop a working relationship with their team members early in the semester to avoid any problems later on. CLASSROOM COURTESY It is expected that everyone will be respectful of fellow classmates. This means that I expect everyone to conduct him or herself in a civil, courteous, and professional manner. While it is acceptable and even desirable to disagree with someone or have a difference in opinion, there is no place for cutting and derogatory comments. Offensive and hostile remarks do not contribute to the learning process, but merely destroy respect, trust, and the development of productive relationships. EXTRA CREDIT THERE WILL BE NO EXTRA CREDIT WORK GIVEN, SO PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT YOU PUT ALL OF YOUR EFFORT INTO DOING WELL ON THE REQUIRED ASSIGNMENTS/EXAMS FOR THE CLASS. PLEASE DO NOT ASK FOR EXTRA CREDIT. DISABILITIES If you have a disability for which you may require academic accommodations for this class, please register with Disability Resources (DR) as soon as possible. Students who have an accommodation letter from DR are encouraged to meet privately with course faculty to discuss the provisions of those accommodations as early in the semester as possible. To qualify for accommodation assistance, students must first register to use the disability resources in DR, Science Center Rm. 2206, 812-464-1961, http://www.usi.edu/disabilities. To help ensure that accommodations will be available when needed, students are encouraged to meet with course faculty at least 7 days prior to the actual need for the accommodation. However, if you will be in an internship, field, clinical, student teaching, or other off-campus setting this semester please note that approved academic accommodations may not apply. Please contact Disability Resources as soon as possible to discuss accommodations needed for access while in this setting. ACADEMIC MISCONDUCT All students are expected to adhere to the highest standard of honesty throughout their college and professional careers. However, there seems to be some confusion about what is dishonest. The USI student handbook outlines a variety of activities deemed to be dishonest. Some of the more common problems include cheating (copying someone else's answers on tests, papers or projects), fabrication of work, and plagiarism (passing someone else's work off as your own). In addition, the section on Student Rights and Responsibilities includes the following statement: "A student must not submit substantial portions of the same academic work for credit or honors more than once without the permission of all the instructors who may be involved." Please see the student handbook for complete details on academic misconduct.

ANY STUDENT FOUND TO HAVE ENGAGED IN DISHONEST BEHAVIOR CONCERNING THE PRESENT CLASS WILL AUTOMATICALLY RECEIVE AN "F" FOR THE COURSE AND BE CHARGED WITH ACADEMIC MISCONDUCT AT THE COLLEGE AND UNIVERSITY LEVELS. TITLE IX – SEXUAL MISCONDUCT USI does not tolerate acts of sexual misconduct, including sexual harassment and all forms of sexual violence. If you have experienced sexual misconduct, or know someone who has, the University can help. It is important to know that federal regulations and University policy require faculty to promptly report incidences of potential sexual misconduct known to them to the Title IX Coordinator to ensure that appropriate measures are taken and resources are made available. The University will work with you to protect your privacy by sharing information with only those who need to know to ensure we can respond and assist. If you are seeking help and would like to speak to someone confidentially, you can make an appointment with a counselor in the University Counseling Center. Find more information about sexual violence, including campus and community resources at www.usi.edu/stopsexualassault.
