Page 8: Management of Obesity in Unani System of Medicine BY Ms. Shaikh Nikhat

Body mass index (BMI)

• The WHO definition:• BMI Categories: – Normal weight = 18.5-24.9 – Overweight = 25-29.9 – Obesity = BMI of 30 or greater(classification does not apply to people younger than

Page 9: Management of Obesity in Unani System of Medicine BY Ms. Shaikh Nikhat

Just a Example

• BMI = body weight (kg) ÷ height² (m)• Weigh: 150 lbs (68 kg) and • Height: 5'8" (5 fit & 8 inch) = (1.73 m) Calculation: 68 ∕ (1.73 × 1.73) or 2.99. Result: 22.74 (healthy range).

Prevalence of childhood obesity • It is one of the most serious public health challenges of the 21st

century. • The problem is global and is steadily affecting many low- and

middle-income countries. • Globally, in 2010 the number of overweight children under the age

of five years.• It is estimated to be over 42 million. Close to 35 million of these

adulthood• More likely to develop non communicable diseases like diabetes

and cardiovascular diseases at a younger age.• Prevention of childhood obesity therefore needs high priority.”

What does obesity do to our bodies? (Effects)

– Cardiovascular disease– Diabetes type 2–Musculoskeletal disorders – Cancers-endometrial, cervical and colon– Infertility – PCODs– Gallstones – Premature death and disability

Page 19: Management of Obesity in Unani System of Medicine BY Ms. Shaikh Nikhat

What Modern medicine sys about management of Obesity

• They are only for people who are classified as obese or have secondary diseases

• Which may produce adverse effects on long term uses

Page 22: Management of Obesity in Unani System of Medicine BY Ms. Shaikh Nikhat
