131 MEDICAL DIARY.-EDITORIAL NOTICES.-MANAGER’S NOTICES. PUERPERAL FEVER IN THE SUDAN. THE report upon the research work of the Wellcome Tropical Research Laboratories at Khartoum during 1915, which is not published in full on account of war economy, contains a summary (Tropical Diseases Bulletin, vol. vii., No. 6) of an investigation by the director, Dr. A. J. Chalmers and Dr. Alex. Marshall into the bacteriology of puerperal fever. They found this to be in the Anglo-Egyptian Sudan mostly a local uterine infection and not commonly a septicaemia. Two causal organisms were S. salivarius and S. bovis (= S. bovinus, Broadhurst, 1915). The writers also found cases in which the causal organism was S. versatilis, Broadhurst, 1915, a member of the fœcalis group, and another due to S. fcecalis, Andrewes and Horder, 1906. The sources of infection appeared to be principally from human, equine, and bovine fseoes, the two latter being largely used in Khartoum and Omdurman as an application called "Zibla" which is applied to roofs and walls.
