Christmas and the Tax Man – Bah

Humbug or Not?

The Christmas Party can be allowable for PAYE

purposes

It has to be available for all employees / partners

It must not exceed £150 per head else the whole

amount is taxable

Also applies to members of family and household as

guests!

VAT is recoverable on staff entertaining but not the

family element unless a ’charge’ is made

A modest gift is allowable – the Revenue give the

example of a turkey or ‘ordinary’ wine (so not Bollinger

then!)

The Bribery Act 2010

This is a risk to organisations where particularly

customer supplier relationships exist

Definition is if someone ‘offers, promises or gives a

financial or other advantage to another person’

Being bribed – think about people who deal with

suppliers

Bribing a foreign public official

Failure of a commercial organisation to prevent bribery

Defence is based on ‘six principles’
