Friday night’s Evening Under the Stars celebration was a wonderful evening of Alumni Displays, Children’s Activities, School Tours, Entertainment, and Food Trucks, ending with the Pass It On Ceremony at Mary’s statue in the courtyard. On Saturday we had a Mass of Thanksgiving and reception in the Activities Center. How marvelous it was to see alumni re-connecting with classmates and former teachers. Bethany Food Pantry

Happy Anniversary! Wed., Oct. 4, is the 4th anniversary of the opening of Bethany Food Pantry, founded in 2013 to provide food to the needy of our community. A special thank you to Vickie Taylor, Coordinator of Bethany Food Pantry, and the many volunteers (approximately 50) who assist in so many ways. Last Sunday, we asked that all families/households bring one can (or other staple food item) today, in recognition of this anniversary and our efforts to help the needy. May God bless you! Remember the statement of Cardinal Francis George in the weeks before he died, “The only thing that you take into heaven is what you give away.”

BlessIng oF anIMals (and theIr owners)

Oct. 4th is the memorial of 13th century St. Francis of Assisi, a deacon, who founded the many religious communities known as the Franciscans that follow his approach to prayer, penance, and poverty. He is known as a lover of nature and animals. As such, there will be a

special Blessing of Animals (and their owners) on Wed., Oct. 4, at 3:45 pm, weather permitting. Students from All Saints School, public schools, other private schools, and home-schools are invited, along with other parishioners who may want to join us. Pets, such as dogs, must be on a leash. All pets must be under the control of the owner. Please, no animals which are dangerous or could be harmful to others. Bring your pet and gather in the courtyard. Anyone from All Saints School who will be coming must first go through the car pool line and then park in the parking lot. As always, please follow the directions of those directing the car pool lines at the school. This blessing is to help us remember the goodness that comes to us through God’s creation.

an InvItatIon FroM Holy Family Secular FranciScan Fraternity

October 4 is the feast of our founder, St. Francis. It’s such an important day for us that we begin celebrating it the evening before. On Oct. 3, Franciscans all over the world celebrate a devotion called a Transitus to ritually remember the passing of Saint Francis from this life into God. On Tues., Oct. 3 at 7:00 pm, Holy Family Fraternity will host

a Transitus service in the church and our hope is that many of you will join us. At the Transitus we will pray Evening Prayer and you will hear stories Saint Clare and the early brothers of Saint Francis shared about the night he died. They tell that, despite the pain h e was enduring, there was a deep joy and peace i n him as he welcomed Sister Death. Following t h e Transitus, we’ll have some refreshments in the Narthex in order to make tangible our Franciscan joy.

Who are We? Holy Family Fraternity has been meeting monthly at All Saints since we were established 20 years ago. We are not a parish organization, nor are we a prayer group. We are members of the Franciscan Order - even though we don’t wear brown robes. Ours is the 3rd Order founded by St. Francis in 1221, a religious Order for the laity and secular clergy. We are but one fraternity among many in the world-wide Secular Franciscan Order whose members make life-long promises to live the Gospel of Our Lord in the footsteps of St. Francis of Assisi. You may have seen some of our members around All Saints, for we are men and women just like you. We live in the world, striving for holiness in our state in life, and we are active in our parish. Our members are lectors, Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, cantors, catechists, and permanent deacons. One of our brothers heads up the That Man is You program. Holy Family Fraternity invites you to come to our Transitus and learn more about the Secular Franciscan Order and our fraternity. Contact: [email protected].

sPonsors needed: JourneyIng to Jesus

Sponsors for those who are becoming Catholic. The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) (or children) is the process for bringing adults and young people into the Catholic Church. Each individual in the program needs a sponsor. As a representative of the faith community, the sponsor is a companion on the journey to full initiation. Sponsors offer advice and encouragement and grow together with the person they sponsor as they share their faith together. There are many adults and young people who do not have someone in their lives to make that commitment. If you are interested or willing to share your faith experience with someone who wishes to join the Church, please contact Samantha Welsh, Director of Religious Education (703-393-2142).
