In the Catholic Church, adults who want to become Catholic or complete the sacraments of initiation (Baptism, Communion, Confirmation) join a program called the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA). Participants in the program meet weekly for instruction, prayer, and sharing of the Scripture. If you or someone you know is interested in joining this program, please contact Samantha Welsh in the Religious Education Office (703-393-2142).

sPonsors needed: JourneyIng to Jesus

Sponsors for those who are becoming Catholic. The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) (or children) is the process for bringing adults and young people into the Catholic Church. Each individual in the program needs a sponsor. As a representative of the faith community, the sponsor is a companion on the journey to full initiation. Sponsors offer advice and encouragement and grow together with the person they sponsor as they share their faith together. There are many adults and young people who do not have someone in their lives to make that commitment. If you are interested or willing to share your faith experience with someone who wishes to join the Church, please contact Samantha Welsh, Director of Religious Education (703-393-2142).

The archangels in Scripture. Sept. 29 is the Feast of Saints Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael, Archangels.

The Bible tells us about these archangels: St. Michael (Daniel 12:1; Revelation 12:1-17) who defeats Satan and the fallen angels; St. Gabriel (Daniel 9:22-23) and

(Luke 1:5-38), where Gabriel appears to Zechariah and also at the Annunciation to the Blessed Virgin Mary; and St. Raphael (Tobit 11; 12), where Raphael accompanies Tobiah to restore the sight of his father Tobit. St. Gregory the Great writes:

You should be aware that the word “angel” denotes a function rather than a nature. Those holy spirits of heaven have indeed always been spirits. They can only be called angels when they deliver some message. … and those who proclaim messages of supreme importance are called archangels. …

Some angels are given proper names to denote the service they are empowered to perform. In that holy city, where perfect knowledge flows from the vision of almighty God, those who have no names may easily be known. But personal names are assigned to some, not because they could not be known without them, but rather to denote their ministry when they come among us. Thus, Michael means “Who is like God?”; Gabriel is “The Strength of God”; and Raphael is “God’s Remedy.”

New Servers: Boys and girls at least 10 years old and in 5th grade or above who would like to be Altar Servers, for either the English or Spanish Masses, need to attend two (out of three) training sessions this fall. A parent should plan to attend these sessions with their child and the session will last about an hour. If you have any questions, please call Peg at the parish office (703-368-4500) or email the lay coordinator ([email protected]).

Returning Servers: Boys and girls who are already Altar Servers for the English Masses need to attend one of two training sessions offered for returning servers in order to remain active. Parents of servers younger than age 13 are asked to remain in the church during the session, which will last about a half hour. Questions? Contact Lynn Pechiney ([email protected]).

What to Expect: Servers can expect to serve one weekend Mass per month. Mass assignments are based upon each server’s stated preference. We are in need of servers who would be available for daily Masses as well. Service at daily Mass would be more frequent.

We are using Ministry Scheduler Pro (MSP) to schedule liturgical ministries, including the altar servers. We are continuing with our plan to roll this out to the various liturgical ministries, starting first with English Masses and limited ministries, after which we will be adding the Spanish Masses. MSP is used by a number of parishes. Its key advantage, once it is in full use, is that families with members in different liturgical ministries can be scheduled for the same Mass on a weekend and it is easier to request substitutes. Parents of new servers who will serve at the English Masses are asked to attend an orientation session for MSP at the same time their child is attending the training either on Mon./Tues., Sept. 25 or 26. Deacon Ralph Goldsmith will conduct the MSP training in the Parish Library located in the church on both of those evenings, as indicated above.

Salmo 144

saCraMentos Para adultos

PadrInos Para rICn & rICa
