Warm weather! Finally! S1ll a li2le on the cool side, but a whole lot be2er than the last few months. All of us who’ve been wai1ng for this have no more excuses for geAng out and taking pictures!
I was one of the folks who went on the trip to the Outer Banks for night photography. We had hoped to get pictures of lighthouses with the Milky Way in the background, but the weather did not cooperate; it was cloudy or foggy during the 1me of night that the Milky Way would have been visible. But that didn’t stop us from being out there just in case. And we got pictures of lighthouses with stars and lighthouses with their light shining through the fog, which made for some interes1ng images. And we wanted to do piers at sunset and sunrise, but the clouds were in the wrong place for colorful shots. So we improvised and shot the piers at slow shu2er speeds to blur the surf as it came in and went out. Different speeds resulted in different pa2erns. And we also got pictures of the piers with stars.
Which is all to say that just because the weather or other condi1ons don’t look promising, we s1ll need to get out there and take what mother nature gives us. And we can s1ll get wonderful images. And have a great 1me while we’re at it!
We now have a full slate of officers for all the Execu1ve Board posi1ons for next year, thanks to Jennifer Kelle2 who volunteered for 1st Vice President, and Chris Born who volunteered for Secretary. I hope the arm-‐twis1ng didn’t hurt too much. Volunteering to remain in their posi1ons next year are me as President, Steve Heap as VP for Programs, Roger Cox as VP for Compe11on, Robin Perkins as Treasurer, and Alan Skerker as Newsle2er Editor. We’ll vote this month to formally elect the Board. Thanks to all, and thanks to Jeff Horn and Sandy Gherardi for their service as they step down as 1st VP and Secretary, respec1vely.
For those who want to display framed images at City Hall from May 26 to June 30, bring them to one of the May mee1ngs on the 7th or 21st. We need to hang them on May 26, the day a_er Memorial Day. In July we’ll be dona1ng framed images to the Willow Oaks Assisted Living Facility at Birmingham Green. Those who are displaying at City Hall can use those images for the dona1on if you want to. For others, you can bring them to the mee1ng on May 21, or to the Banquet on June 4, or hold onto them and I’ll make arrangements to collect them in June.
Now get out there, have fun, take pictures!

The James R. M. Spor Memorial Award is given to a member or members of the club that have given outstanding spirit and dedication in the last year. This is the most prestigious award given by the club and it’s named in honor of the club’s founder and \irst president Jim Spor. The recipient is chosen from nominations made by MWCC members and it’s time to think about who you think is the most quali\ied individual.
As an additional aid in understanding the reason for the award you might like to know a little bit about the history of the club and its founder. James (Jim) Russell Meyers Spor established the Manassas Warrenton Camera Club in September of 1985. He served as the club president for three years. He devoted countless hours toward skillfully and lovingly nurturing the club through its early years. He constantly re\ined his vision of the club as he learned new ways to promote photography and as he solicited fellow photographers to help him in achieving his goal of a \irst class camera club in Northern Virginia. He considered himself a novice photographer during the early years of the club, however he was a quick study and became a major contender on competition nights. He was a gentle man, never seeking personal recognition for his work with the club. His reward was handing out a ribbon to a \irst time winner on competition night or introducing a new member to the club and seeing it grow. He did not realize that he was gifted with organizational skills that many of us were envious of. While he was a family man, devoted to his wife and children, he considered the camera club members his extended family and our mentor.
Sadly on October 1, 1994, at the age of 50 years, Jim fell victim to a heart attack. Hence the memorial award was established in 1995 to honor Jim for his unlimited devotion to providing a forum where fellow photographers, regardless of their skill, could meet and share their skill and photographic experiences. His helping hands and willingness to help other photographers became the launching pad for our success. He would be very pleased to see how the club has grown and what talent it has nurtured.
James R.M. Spor Award Nominations
The Jim Spor Award is the highest club award given to a member of MWCC who best exempli\ies the spirit and dedication of our founder to the principles and goals of the Manassas Warrenton Camera Club. This award brings to the attention of the MWCC members the many hours of volunteer work and contributions provided by the recipient.
Nominations should be sent to Steve Heap at Vp-‐programs@mwcc-‐photo.org. Steve was last year’s winner and is this year’s chairman of the Jim Spor awards committee. The recipient will be announced at the annual banquet and year-‐end awards night on June 4, 2015.

“Four Seasons” the 2015-2016 MWCC Club Projectby Roger Cox
The club project for 2015-2016 has been chosen! The theme is "Four Seasons” and we are announcing it early so that you may take full advantage of the time and have the ability to capture a scene in each of the four seasons before the project concludes. The concept is this: pick a location (or several locations) and shoot the scene(s) several times throughout the year so that the images distinctly show the effects of spring, summer, fall, and winter.
Find your favorite spot and set up in the same place each time. You may need to pick several locations, to ensure that you will be able to capture the same scene in all four seasons. At the last club meeting Wayne Wolfersberger offered that he attempted to do this but one of his locations had been bulldozed between seasons. On another occasion, his subject, a tree, had fallen over between seasons. So, it is wise to pick multiple locations for your project!
Special thanks to Mr. Joshua Taylor Jr. who graciously provided an example of one of his four season sets, a maple tree at Longwood Gardens.
This will be a personally rewarding project, because when you are done, you will have a beautiful collection of images capturing all four seasons that you can hang on the wall.
The images will most likely be collected in late April or early May 2016. Until then... Happy shooting!!

Arts Alive 2015by Gordon Tassi
The Prince William County Arts Council is a membership organization serving the Greater Prince William Area, including Prince William County, Manassas and Manassas Park. The mission of the Council is:
• To promote and support local artists and arts organizations, and
• To enlighten and educate audiences about the arts in the Greater Prince William Area.
The Arts Alive festival is one of the Council’s important activities. The Manassas-‐Warrenton Camera Club, as part of the Prince William County Council for the Arts, will take part in “Arts Alive 2015”, a celebration of the arts organizations in the county. This is an annual event that allows arts organizations to market their activities and build support for the arts.
The event will take place at the Hylton Center for the Performing Arts, on May 2, 2015, from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM. The club will display both print and digital images in the Main Lobby of the Center. We will also assist attendees who have concerns about their photography and/or camera’s operation. Club membership participation is essential for making this event a success.
The club will display digital images from this year’s competition that received a 7 or above in a slideshow format. We also expect to display at least 20 prints, depending on their size, on our display rack and table stands.
Important change: Club members will not be allowed to sell their images this year. The reason for this is that the Arts Council has imposed a fee of $140 for any sales activity and the MWCC board decided that amount would exceed anticipated sales.
The print images will be collected at the meetings in March and the April. All print images, 8 x 10 or up to 11 by 14 inches, must be matted with plastic eyes attached to the back of the matt for hanging them. The rules for matting are the same as those for “Nature Vision.”

Starting in September 2015, the following changes to the competition process will be made: 1. All print competition entries (Black & White Prints as well as Color Prints) will require a "digital proof" to be uploaded to the MWCC Competition website prior to the competition. 2. The deadline for submissions will be the same as the digitally projected image category, which is the Monday preceding the competition, no later than 11:59 PM EST. 3. Any images (“digital proof”) that do not comply with the monthly theme will be rejected and guidance given to the member on the reason for rejection to allow the member to replace the image with an alternative entry. a.) Any coordination regarding image replacement must take place between the member and
the Vice President for Competition. b.) All image replacements must be completed (via e-‐mail with the Vice President for Competition)
no later than 7:30 PM on the Wednesday evening before the competition. c.) These image replacement guidelines are consistent with the digitally projected image category. 4. All print competition entries will be digitally scored using the competition software at the time of the competition. 5. If no "digital proof" is uploaded prior to the competition deadline (unless a technical glitch occurs), a score will not be recorded for any print brought to the meeting and submitted for competition. 6. The scores will be visible on the competition website as soon as possible (the same as the digitally projected image category). 7. The individual scores and cumulative scoreboard will continue to be published in the newsletter. These measures will allow us to more fully automate the competition judging and scoring process, allow the scores to reach the membership on a timely basis and also provide us with digital copies of all competition entries for the year.

Brian Zwit Biographyby Roger Cox
Brian Zwit judged the March 2015 compe11on. His biography was received too late for publica1on and is provided here for reference. Ed.
About 40 years ago, Brian discovered that photography provided a powerful means for expressing his vision of the world. Over the years, his love of the outdoors and photography as well as an ap1tude for computer technology have morphed into a passion (some would say obsession) for capturing the elegance and majesty of the unique landscapes, wildlife, and flora of the United States.
While the pursuit of nature takes him all over the country, he favors the west, northwest, northeast, mid-‐Atlan1c, and wherever he is; his love of hiking and backpacking takes him far beyond populated areas into seAngs which few people visit. Brian’s images are in private residences and corporate offices and have appeared in regional magazines such as Wonderful West Virginia. Corporate clients have also used his images for promo1onal and internal publica1ons.
Brian has been teaching workshops, field trips, classes, and speaking to camera clubs, schools, and other non-‐profits for over seven years. He recently reached a milestone: Brian taught Lightroom to his 500th student. Brian is well-‐known for his ability to dis1ll complex topics to their essence and explain them in simple, easy to understand ways and he just completed his opus presenta1on on digital technology, en1tled: “Digital Tech: Concepts to Know if You are a Digital Photographer”.
Brian uses whatever camera and equipment will allow him to capture his vision for the subject in front of him. He generally uses Nikon cameras, Nikon and Sigma lenses, Induro tripods and ballheads, and all sorts of accessories. His favorite camera is the full-‐frame Nikon D800E and favorite lens is the Nikkor 85mm f/1.4. The D800, with its 36 megapixel sensor, makes prin1ng BIG images easy and the 85mm, with its f/1.4 minimum f-‐stop, makes creamy backgrounds a foregone conclusion. However, when headed downtown or just around town, you are likely to see him with his Fujifilm XE-‐1, which is lighter to carry and easier to conceal in his jacket. The occasional use of Zero Image pinhole, Holga, and Lomographic cameras provides him with an expanded array of ways to express himself and a respite from complicated cameras, heavy lenses, and the need for ba2eries.
He manages his digital workflow using a MacBook Pro, with most of his images being lightly edited using Adobe Lightroom, Photoshop, and various plug-‐ins. He also uses Photoma1x Pro and Nik So_ware’s HDR Efex Pro for HDR imaging, various s1tching applica1ons for crea1ng panoramas, and Apple Keynote and Boinx FotoMagico to create mul1media presenta1ons.
Brian has college degrees in chemical engineering, law, and photography with extensive training in HTML, PHP, JavaScript, as well as other computer technologies and applica1ons.
