Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Faith, Jesus calls us to the Table! Again and again, we are invited and come to receive the meal of God’s grace and mercy and love. This meal forms and shapes us into people of mercy and love as we join together at Table. On Saturday, November 2nd, 2:30- 5:30pm, we will be providing Holy Communion class for chil- dren of any age and their parents. Please sign up on the Blue form or contact the Church Office to participate. It is especially significant that we focus on the Table this first weekend in November, since it is the time we remember All Saints! And what a celebration we have planned! Not only will we be lighting candles and naming of those in and connected to our faith community who have entered the Church Triumphant in the past year, we will also consider all the joys of abundant life that Jesus brings to us as saints of God and citizens of God’s kingdom right now. While eternal life is our heavenly promise, abundant life is indeed the reali- ty we are given to experience as we participate in the Sha- lom of God right now — It is the promise and hope for all creation! Trinity’s efforts to participate in mercy ministries in our community abound in November, as we gather food for those in need for Thanksgiving, host the PACE Center for Girls students and their families for a Thanksgiving celebration, continue our service at Our Daily Bread, and engage in migrant ministry with Beth-El in Wimauma. Countless per- sons in our community are touched through your generosity as we share all that has been given to us. November will also contain the opportunity for our faith community to look forward to the coming year, making com- mitments for our giving and stewardship of days and deeds. As we joyfully proclaim our participation in the Kingdom of God, we continue to seek ways to make abundant life and shalom the reality for all our human siblings across the globe. Join our Advocacy Team as we learn more about faith-rooted organizing at our meeting on Sunday, November 17th (lunch at 12:30pm, meeting at 1pm). See the article in this issue of Trends for more information. Vicar Fred and I are participating in the initial meetings of clergy in Manatee County that are exploring faith-based collaboration for justice ministry here. Even as we enter November and the season of Thanksgiv- ing, we look forward to Advent and Christmas — just around the corner! As we have already begun planning for these Holy Days, we are making a slight change in our worship times for Christmas Eve. Over the past several years there has been a drop-off of attendees at the 10:30pm worship, so we are moving that worship up 90 minutes to 9pm. Hopefully that will help accommodate you and your family’s Christmas Eve schedules in a more timely way (as well as getting myself and our worship leaders out of the building before 1am Christmas morning!!!) As always, I give thanks to God for each of you and the great privilege to serve and follow Jesus together, Pastor Bobbie MANATEE COMMUNITY CONCERT BAND At Trinity, Tuesday, November 5th, 7pm! The Manatee Community Concert Band has been Mana- tee County’s premier concert band for many years, in fact, they are celebrating their 50th anniversary this season! The program you will hear on Tuesday, November 5th at 7 pm, is entitled “Ode to the Overture!” It is a concert filled with some favorites such as the Radetzky March by Johann Strauss and The Armed Forces Salute arranged by Bob Lowden, and some maybe not-so-familiar pieces such as Overture Jubiloso by Frank Erickson, Danse Bachcanalle by Camille Saint-Saens, and Solas Ane by Samual R. Hazo. They will be directed by J.R. Boatwright. The MCCB is a 501(c)(3) organization. A freewill offering will be collected during the concert. Invite your friends and neighbors so we can “pack the house!” Beach Worship: A special gathering at the Table! Join us Sunday, November 17th, 5pm, Manatee Public Beach

Rebecca’s Notes Dear friends, In case you missed this news recently, Walmart launched their holiday shopping season at midnight on October 24...a full two months prior to Christmas Eve! In con-trast, the Lutheran tradition is to wait…and

wait…and wait…with hope and anticipation…to celebrate the birth of Christ on Christmas Eve (and for one or two Sundays afterward). Advent, this period of waiting, allows us time to reflect on the true gift of Christmas and prepare our hearts to accept and appreciate this gift. Our frail and shallow human hearts can scarcely comprehend what it means that a tiny child - the Son of God - was born into our world for the sole purpose of dying for our salvation. Therefore, how appropriate it seems that we emphasize this period of waiting, and I en-courage us all to make the most of it through ritual and song. During Advent we will light the candles on the Advent wreath one at a time. This is a tradition you can also follow in your home, so feel free to take your worship bulletins home with you and use the dialogue and prayers with your family during the week. We will use a special song and responsive liturgy to accompany this ritual on Sundays, and will also sing a communion liturgy that reflects the Advent/Christmas sea-son. To hear these special Advent Sunday songs, please visit our Dropbox: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/1uagebs4m700sql/AACncbe7SCEQ4TZ_c4xzjqtta?dl=0 . We will continue to update this box with songs and anthems being used during this season so you can enjoy them at home. If you would like to sing in the choir or with the Praise Team for the Advent season, NOW is the time to join up! We have just started rehearsing this music and the music for three fes-tive Christmas Eve services that will include piano, organ, strings and trumpet for all services (4pm, 7pm and 9pm). Shaun and I will provide you with links for listening and will be happy to guide you to the group where your talents can be used most effectively: [email protected] More information about Advent from the ELCA can be found here: https://www.elca.org/Our-Work/Congregations-and-Synods/Worship/Lectionary/YearA

See you in church

Rebecca Kasang

Please let Rebecca know if you are planning to attend choir rehearsal so she can prepare a folder and listening link for you. [email protected]

Vicar’s Voice Brothers and Sisters in Christ, It is with great joy that I write to you. Trinity is full of wonderful people doing wonderful things. The Spirit is truly at work here! We joined Beth-El Ministries and fed the migrant farmers in early October - what a way to serve those who

don’t have enough! A few days later we served at Our Daily Bread, filling up even more people. You all amaze me, the delight that comes from serving those in need beams out from you, brightly into this world. Thank you for everything you do and thank you for letting me join you. The High School youth worshipped with our mission partner in Englewood, Christ Lutheran. It was quite an experience, if you’re ever looking for a conversation about why we are keeping them in our prayers, they would love for you to visit, or we can find some time to talk, though Dominic and Ben were both there too and can fill you in just as well! It is great getting to see others in the faith, worshipping as we do, just in another place. We also visited Temple Beth El, a synagogue, as they were celebrating the festival of the booths. It was really eye opening to see their style, and a wonderful interfaith worship. All that Hebrew in seminary finally paid off! It was a great time to gather communities, and they are one of the partners with us in our habitat for humanity build, so it was very nice getting to meet them in a wor-ship and social setting.

The Pet Blessing was phe-nomenal! Some dogs even sang along. Our dog, Lua, was there and had a wonder-ful time meeting the other furry friends of Trinity.

Congratulations to the Alkire Family! Patrick and Sara Bloom were married the first weekend in October, and it was absolutely amazing. So much joy, so much love, and all focused around life with Jesus. Truly a gift!

I hope you have a joy filled month, one of peace and one centered on Christ’s love!

Student Minister’s Musings Hello again everyone. It’s been an-other great couple of months for me. I’m still getting a lot of compliments and I’d like to thank everyone for them. They mean so much to me. Last month was great and hoping this No-

vember can be just as great. Of course since it’s November we’ve been collecting food for our Thanksgiving Baskets. If you would like to donate food please see the boards in the front of the church to see what food to bring. Personally I love No-vember because not only is Thanksgiving a great holi-day where my whole family comes over, it’s also my birthday this month. Overall it’s great to see my family and so many friends in one day plus we enjoy great meals during it. Really, what else could you ask for? I would like to quickly say that getting to know Vicar Fred has been great. We’ve been traveling around a few of these weeks like going to Englewood, so it’s been great to get to know him. Hopefully you all enjoy your November and Thanks-giving Holiday like I hope to.

With great love and thanks,

Dominic Cozzette

Advocacy Team Update We are grateful to Pastor Russell Meyer for being with us on

October 6th, spending time with our Adult Forum in talking

about the current immigration realities and then meeting with

our Advocacy Team to talk about how we can accompany per-

sons who are suffering due to the injustices of our currently

broken immigration policies. Pastor Bobbie was also able to

attend a workshop with Rev. Dr. Alexia Salvatierra, author of

“Faith-Rooted Organizing,” and will share a compilation of her

learnings at our November 17th, 1pm meeting. You can order

or download a copy of this book from Amazon, and check it out

prior to our gathering for some useful insights. Please contact

the church office or sign up on the Blue Form if you plan to

attend the 12:30pm lunch as well.

From TOL Director, Shawna Clark: We have so much to be thankful for as we head into the holiday season, including folks from Trinity who have been so faithfully supporting our staff and the children in our care.

Our weekly themes for the Month are: November 4th - Camping November 11th - Fall leaves, harvest, pumpkins November 18th - Thankful for family and friends November 25th - Thanksgiving (we will be closed

Color for the month is Brown; Shape, Square Value, Patience: In God’s view, Patience and Persever-ance seem the same. Different Bible translations use one or the other of these words in the same passages. God knows how difficult it is to persist. Giving up when the going gets tough is human tendency. Yet God emphasizes the im-portance of patience and persevering especially at those times. God promises to be beside us. God is patient. Love is patient. Filled with God’s love, we can be patient too!

Embracing Our Jewish Roots

On Friday, October 18th, ten of our Trinity faith community

gathered with the people of Temple Beth El to observe the

Sabbath. “Shabbot Shalom” we greeted one another, and

sang the catchy and lingering tune that both welcomes wor-

shipers and sends them off each week at Beth El.

Last November, following the tragic shooting at Tree of Life

Synagogue in Pittsburgh, people of Trinity had gathered to

sign a letter of solidarity with our brothers and sisters of Jew-

ish faith as we mourned the terror and tragedy, and we pre-

sented it at a Sabbath worship. As it happened, our appear-

ance this time coincided with the anniversary of the shooting

in the Jewish calendar, and their remembrance of all the

dead and the victims in the service October 18th! Much like

our “All Saints” observance, the names were read during

prayers, commending our loved ones to God’s care.

After worship, the head cantor took the time to show us a

very special Torah scroll that is house in their Ark. It sur-

vived the holocaust, having been buried by a sympathetic

Christian under a barn. Though the barn was burned to the

ground, the Torah scroll survived—though it was pointed out

to us that it carries a slight smoky odor when it is unrolled.

Confirmation students Lily Edwards and Rylie Bradley pay

close attention as the Cantor reads the Hebrew words.

“Tea and Me” Brings TLC and TOL Together!

invited our parents or

whoever brought the

students to our Tree of

Life Preschool to come

in for a “Cup of Tea

Lunch with Beth-El Migrant Farmworker Minis-try, Thursday, October 3rd. We partnered with Bayshore Presbyterian in Tampa and Vicar Fred accompanied 10 TLC folks to Beth-El. The combined group fed migrants lunch at the farm they were working. More than 60 workers and the volunteers plus staff of Beth-El enjoyed a meal and brief fellowship. We are grateful to all who participated and to Thrivent for seed money for this project. We will do this again in January, so watch for details to be part of this ministry. We are also looking at other oppor-

tunities of service with Beth-El.

Health Ministry “Minute” Influenza (flu) is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influen-za viruses. It can cause mild to severe illness. Serious outcomes of flu infection can result in hospitalization or death. Some people, such as older people, young children, and people with certain health conditions are at high risk of serious flu complications. There are two main types of flu virus: Types A and B. These are the viruses that routinely spread and are responsible for seasonal flu epidemics each year. The best way to prevent flu is by getting vaccinated each year. Influenza viruses typically circulate here annually, most commonly from Oct 1-March 31. Many people use the term “stomach flu” to describe illnesses with nausea, vomiting or diarrhea. These symptoms can be caused by many different viruses, bacteria or even parasites. While these symptoms can sometimes be related to the flu — more commonly in children than adults — these problems are very rarely the main symptoms of influen-za. The flu is a respiratory disease, not a stomach/intestinal disease.

What’s new with flu season this year (2019-2020)? Flu vaccines are updated to better match viruses expected to be circu-

lating in the United States. All flu shots will be quadrivalent this year. All four of the vaccine viruses

used to produce the flu vaccine will have been grown in cells, not eggs.

Children 6 months through 8 years of age who need 2 doses should receive their first dose as soon as possible after vaccine becomes available to allow the second dose (which must be administered at least 4 weeks later) to be received ideally by the end of October.

Can a flu vaccine give you the flu? No, flu vaccines cannot cause flu illness. Flu vaccines given with a needle (i.e., flu shots) are made two ways: the vaccine is made either with a) flu viruses that have been ‘inactivated’ (killed) and therefore are not infectious, or b) using only a single gene from a flu virus (as op-posed to the full virus) to produce an immune response without causing infection. CDC (Centers for Disease Control & Prevention) recommends that people get a flu vaccine by the end of October SO please act now. Get-ting vaccinated later can still be beneficial. As long as flu viruses are circulating, it is not too late to get vaccinated. It takes about two weeks after vaccination for antibodies to develop in the body that protect against flu virus infection, so it’s best to get vaccinated in time to be protected before flu viruses begin spreading. Seasonal flu disease usually peaks between December and March most years, but disease can occur as late as May.

What does the Bible say about being healthy? God makes it very clear that we are to take care of ourselves holistical-ly, i.e. physically, mentally, and spiritually. He designed and crafted us with love, purpose and care, so we need to treat ourselves accordingly. Diligently pay attention to your physical health as this flu season ap-proaches, and you will in turn be a good neighbor to others.
