Local sports physician Ra Durie said, while rugby was a potentially dangerous sport, a lot of the injuries sustained were just bad luck. “Even the best preparation may not prevent some injuries from occurring. In 2010 there were 594 rugby claims which then rose to 723 last year. Rugby league claims also increased from 119 to 151 between 2010 and 2013. According to ACC, the jump is partly related to better injury reporting. New Zealand Rugby and ACC developed the programme RugbySmart in 2001 which has a focus on educating coaches to ensure players are prepared for games. It also provides essential information and tests coaches knowledge of injury prevention and management. Rugby coaches of all levels must now complete the RugbySmart course through ACC. The RugbySmart website reports a significant decrease in the rate of injuries since its establishment. In March, Northland Rugby became the first to implement a ‘blue card’ system. This gives referees the ability to order concussed amateur players from the field who must also consult a doctor before being cleared to play. A University of Canterbury study worked with ITM Cup players over two years and found participants showed levels of trauma during a game similar to that experienced in a car crash.

YOUR VIEWS

Lower limitsRe Lower alcohol limits will save lives, Lees-Galloway? This legislation is fraught withproblems, I sort of get where Galloway iscoming from in regards to road safety inregards to drink drivers who could argue.

So what is the limit? 50 milligrams per 100millilitres of blood or have I missed some-thing? Or is the limit 25 milligrams per 100millilitres of blood.

You cannot have both; the latter isentrapment and revenue driven.

This legislation contradicts itself in termsand does not target the repeat offenders whowill carry on offending regardless. The thugsand drivers with complete disregard to othersshould get life imprisonment but our judicialsystem is so weak, it is part of the reason Iresigned as a highway cop. Some people votein plonker politicians and with this you getlegislation that makes no sense whatsoever.

KEVIN STILLPalmerston North

Meeting insightfulOn Sunday, I went to the well-attended,National Council of Women — sponsoredMeet the Candidates meeting held at the CityLibrary. Some of the new faces among thecandidates were definitely worth coming for,and Iain Lees-Galloway clearly showed whyhe is the best man to represent the Palmer-ston North electorate (and I’m not a Labourvoter).

But what was most telling were theperformances of the Conservative Partycandidates, who I had never met, seen or

heard before, and the National Partycandidates, who I have met, seen and heardoften. I suspect the Conservative candidatesagree with their leader in having seriousdoubts humans have ever landed on themoon, judging by their apparent denial thereis anything human-induced about climatechange. Guess I can mark them off my list ofcandidates to possibly vote for.

On the other hand, the Nationalcandidates didn’t deny climate change —they just don’t seem to think we should doanything before anybody else does which is arecipe for the human-induced destruction ofcivilisation. But that wasn’t really new.

What was new and most interesting to mewas the National Party candidates’ answerson what are the biggest issues facing womenin their electorates. Ian McKelvie said it wasall sorts of things (basically a recital of Partypolicies) but didn’t even mention sexual anddomestic violence and the pay gap betweenmen’s and women’s jobs. These werementioned as the big ones by everyone else.Fortunately for National, Jono Naylor, ident-ified these two and said he would do all hecould, if elected to Parliament, to addressthem, even though he recognised it would begoing against the grain to do so.

I think he spoke correctly. Advocating forequality of pay for men and women in a partythat thinks the market sorts these things out,and advocating against sexual violence in aparty whose leader retracts an offer ofapology to a sexually-assaulted womenbecause it wasn’t serious enough, will defin-itely be pushing against the grain.

Majority of dogs survive poundBy ALECIA ROUSSEAU

The Palmerston North CityCouncil is impoundinghundreds of dogs each yearbut more than half arebeing returned to theirrightful owners.

Head of environmentalprotection services WayneJameson said last year 594dogs were brought into thepound with 50 rehomed and169 euthanised.

The chosen method forthose who were put to sleepwas a “humane” injectiongiven by a vet.

“For as long as I canremember we’ve alwaysused this method,” he said.“We work in an urban area

and none of our officerscarry firearms.”

A petition is circulatingthe internet calling for aNorthland council to stopusing shooting as theirmethod of euthansia. Italleges the pound’s dogsare lined up together andshot one by one.

Petitioner AnnMareeMills claims the injectionis an affordable option ataround $10 per dose butshooting is recognised as amethod of euthanasia inthe code of welfare for dogs.

PNCC works closelywith the SPCA, PAWS Ani-mal Shelter and the publicto find homes for unwanteddogs. Carcasses are offered

to the owners, cremated orgiven to Massey Universityfor study purposes.

Mr Jameson said pitbullbreeds, who were classedas menacing, were notrehomed. Statistics showthis breed is the most com-monly impounded dog inNew Zealand.

Research states their“misunderstood” natureleaves them susceptible toowners who use them forbreeding or fighting andhave little knowledge ofhow to control their dog.

The American Tempera-ment Test Society alsostates pitbulls rank highlyin temperament tests with84-85 per cent pass rates.

One in four people inPalmerston North livewith a disability and lessthan half of them are partof the workforce accordingto statistics.

The Disabled PersonsAssembly of New Zealandis attempting to changethis and have appointed alocal Kaituitui to raiseawareness of the need toopen doors to educationand employment.

Mike Girling-Butcher,who’s also a tetraplegic, says those with disabilitiesare often overlooked.

“We need to be viewedfor our skills not thedisability we live with.Disabled people can leadfulfilling lives but we stillstrike a few barriers.”

He said a lack of trustbetween employers andpeople with a disabilitywas a major contributor.

“It’s the same old story,we have to perform twiceas better to be viewed halfas good. We need todevelop real trust and letemployers know disabledpeople want to work.”

DPA chief executiveRachel Noble saysemployment is not onlyimportant for anindividual’s economicindependence, but also forone’s self-esteem.

“We see productivity as

wider than just having ajob. For example, if peoplecan’t move around theirown community easily, orthey can’t access theinformation they need, their ability to beproductive in other areasof life will also be limited.”

She said disabledpeople were an untappedresource in New Zealand.

Mr Girling-Butcher willbe following the UnitedNations Convention on the

rights of persons withdisabilities. Thisdocument reaffirms peoplewith all types ofdisabilities must enjoy allhuman rights andfundamental freedoms.

ELECTION 2014

Promise of higherwages, lower taxesBy ALECIA ROUSSEAU

SEEING RED: Labour leader DavidCunliffe addresses a community meetingin Palmerston North.

PHOTO: ALECIA ROUSSEAU

The message was all about putting “peoplefirst” at a community meeting led byLabour leader David Cunliffe on Tuesdaynight.

Packing the Globe Theatre, residentsfrom across the region asked questionsabout New Zealand’s future under the redumbrella and what policies will make thetop-10 if they get into Parliament.

In his first election as leader, MrCunliffe said, despite his opponent’sexperience, he was confident this yearwas the right time for a Labour-ledGovernment.

“We believe this is going to be acliffhanger election . . . but it comes downto the number of volunteers we have onthe day.”

He added the deciding factor would bewhether or not the public used their vote.

“We know there are people up anddown the country who did not vote and it’sa matter of knocking on every door. Thisis worth two to three per cent to us . . . thatwill decide the election.”

Labour would be focused on increasingthe minimum wage to $16.25, creating afairer tax system, retaining Kiwi assetsand creating 100,000 new homes over 10years. Mr Cunliffe said providing fairworking conditions was at the “heart” of aLabour Government.

“National are pledged to take awayyour smoko and lunch break. There’s oneway to stop it and that’s to vote for theLabour party.”

The crowd applauded Mr Cunliffethroughout his speech and seemedespecially pleased at the announcement ofextending parental leave to six months

and creating a hospital waiting list thatreflected “real” need.

Local MP Iain Lees-Galloway spoke inregards to re-investing in New Zealand’sDefence Force. He said they had lost theability to undertake more than oneoverseas deployment at any one time butLabour would change that.

The two men were joined on stage byRangitikei candidate Deborah Russell andTe Hai Hauauru candidate AdrianRurawhe.

Smokefree Palmyone step closer

GDN140814smokefree

SUPPORTER: Salih Osman of Desert Rose Cafe onCuba Street is proud to support the Smokefree policy.

By DALEWICKEN

Palmerston North’s bid tobecome a smokefree cityis slowly becoming areality with half of thebusinesses within theinner-city smokefreezone committed to beingsmokefree.

The businesses who’vemade the pledge displaystickers in their windowsand signs have beeninstalled outside councilowned facilities and onevery bus stop. Butt binsare also being removedfrom smokefree streets.

The aim is to helpresidents and visitorsimprove their health byencouraging people not tosmoke in public places, according to Smokefreeenforcement officer JulieBeckett.

“Tobacco is highly addictive andhelping people to stop smoking is one ofthe best ways of improving theirhealth.”

While the policy is not a bylaw andcannot be enforced, organisers arehopeful with more signage andpromotion at public events the messagewill get through.

“What needs to be clear is this is notabout penalising people who smoke —it’s about creating a future where ourchildren and grandchildren will be freefrom the exposure of tobacco and itsuse,” Ms Beckett said.

Since the implementation of theSmokefree Environments Bill bycentral government in 1990, controllingsmoking in Palmerston North has been

a progressive process.“First smoking was discouraged in

the workplace, then in bars and cafes, school and hospital grounds. Outdoorrecreation areas, reserves and parksfollowed and now the focus is on theheart of the city,” Ms Beckett said.

Mayor Jono Naylor is also supportiveof the smokefree policy.

“By getting onboard they’re givingcustomers a helping hand to improvetheir health but they’re also supportingthe vast majority of customers who wantto shop and relax in town withoutcigarette smoke in their face.”

At a council meeting on Monday, arecommendation to write to centralgovernment asking for more options forenforcement was unsuccessful.

MANFEILD MATTERS

Evento — a sight to beholdwith HEATHERVERRYManfeild Park Trust chief executive

August is a month of colourfulcreativity at Manfeild with two

annual events deliveringamazingly eyecatching and uniquedesigns irresistible to fans offashion.

These being? Well, asdisparately different as theypresent to the public eye, thePalmerston North Hot Rod Club’sswap meet that’s just been hostedat our facility and the Eventosecondary schools’ wearable artsawards coming to ManfeildStadium on August 16.

As much as the sale tablesremain a big attraction for puristpetrolhead enthusiasts at the hotrod day, it’s becoming increasinglyevident the emergent attraction ofthis event is the opportunity to seeand admire the incredible count ofcars on display in and around thestadium.

This event is obviously held inhigh regard as evidenced by thenumber of enthusiasts that areprepared to bring such a widevariety of high-calibre hot rods andstreet machines from throughoutthe country, simply so the generalpublic can marvel over theirprecious metal for six hours or so.

For the first time at theconclusion of the programme, anadded incentive for vehicle ownerswas the opportunity to cruise thecircuit. Given many of the carsthat ran on the track werecarrying passengers, I’d assumethere were quite a few local peoplehappy to pay a gold coin donationto secure a ride. I daresay there’llbe more than a few children — ofall ages — who are now able togleefully relate how they took onthe track in a ‘souped-up’ V8.

It was a great Saturday and one

that maintained a rain-freetradition — but only just. Theheavy showers that hit the regionon the preceding night dissipatedfor blue skies just as the gatesopened to the early bird bargainbuyers.

Weather is not an issue forEvento, of course. ManfeildStadium provides a comfortableenviron for Feilding High School’sfashion fantastic. Now in its 18thyear, Evento has grownsignificantly during its time atManfeild to become a stunningshowcase of regional talent thatdraws out wearable art designswhich truly wow on a night ofdance, drama, music andperformance.

Evento deserves our supportand I’d be disappointed, andsurprised, if the 2000-seat arenawasn’t filled. The level of effort thatgoes into this undertaking is huge.

The costume designs and theshow is at a level ofprofessionalism right up therewith the annual World of WearableArts in Wellington and it reflectsthe many, many hours of behind-the-scenes planning andpreparation.

The reward is for our region’sstudents to present their designs toan appreciative audience. It’s a bigthing for any youngster to pluck upthe courage to show off artworkthat truly reflects their deepestemotions and creativity to a crowdof people, not just relatives andfriends, but to total strangers.

Anything of this scale deservesa spacious, flexible environmentand the stadium fulfils thatrequirement; it ensures a show

that is really something to behold. The music, dance, performanceand wearable art combines into anincredible extravaganza.

The 10 best costumes will bechosen by a panel of five judges, with backgrounds in art andtextile, and will go on to be judgedfor the supreme award — a trip tothe holy grail of wearable art,WOW in Wellington.

Keeping to student matters, lastSaturday (August 9) we welcomedback the ProActive Drive YouthEducation Trust which offers adriving knowledge and lifesavingskills course aimed at teenagerswho are about to receive theirdriver’s licence or have recentlygot one.

Students from the region’ssecondary schools were invited toundertake specialist instruction inthe no-cost courses which we seeas being particularly fitting for ourvenue, given our intention is todevelop our back circuit into thecountry’s best driving trainingarena.

The development begins on theweek of August 18 when the area issegregated from the main circuitwith the installation of concretecrash barriers. Scenarios beingtaught during the ProActive Drivesessions include learning to steerthrough an obstacle course of roadcones, coping with wet, greasy, conditions and understanding howa vehicle behaves when brakes areapplied suddenly.

Remembering a brave soldier

THE grave in its “forgottenstate”. PHOTOS: SUPPLIED

By NEILL BIRSS

A forlorn, erodedheadstone in Kelvin Grovecemetery marks the graveof a World War I soldierwho four times wonbravery awards.

A hundred years agothis month, James Bell waspreparing to move toFrance. He was one of theBritish regular soldierswho, reinforced byterritorials, withstood theinitial storm of the GermanArmy. Bell was the eldestfrom a large rural Ayrshirefamily which migrated toSouthland in 1911.

Bell had already enlistedin a British regiment, theRoyal Scots Fusiliers. Six ofhis brothers fought asmembers of the NewZealand Army — three inWorld War I, four in WorldWar II (one served in both).

The Kaiser reputedlydescribed the few hundredthousand British regularsand territorials sentinitially to France as acontemptible little army, and they were soon knownas the Old Contemptibles.Bell was at the first battle ofYpres, described byhistorian Anne Tuchmanas the “real monument toBritish valour”, where theinitial regular force“fought until they literallydied and stopped theGermans”.

She says it was the graveof four-fifths of the force.

Bell, a corporal, enduredtrench fighting for fouryears. He won the BritishMilitary Medal three times

and France’s MedailleMilitaire, but equallyprized his 1914 campaignmedal with its clasps forthose who had been in thethick of the fighting. Hewas wounded four timesfinally leading to hisdischarge.

Bell brought his wife toNew Zealand after the warand worked as a powerlineman and rabbiter. Hishouse burned downdestroying his military

records. Family historianshave verified his threeM.M. awards and theMedaille Militaire, buthave been unable toconfirm or refute hisstatement he was alsorecommended for theVictoria Cross and wasMentioned in Dispatches anumber of times.

Bell, his wife, and twochildren were living inPalmerston North whenhe died at age 36 onNovember 8 1930 whileinstalling a milkingmachine on a FitzherbertWest farm. Newspaperreports claimed headinjuries indicated he hadfallen and his headstonesays he died of warinjuries.

The family’smisfortune continued;Bell’s son was jailed as aconscientious objector inWorld War I and later dieda bachelor, apparentlyschizophrenic. Hisdaughter married anAmerican sailor servingin the Pacific war but thisleft her a widow.

WELL TRAVELLED: Andrew London and his band will beaccompanied by Neil Billington this Friday night.

PHOTO: SUPPLIED

This Friday night at the BentHorseshoe in Tokomaru, theAndrew London Trio with NeilBillington will hit the stage.

With his whimsical songs,London reflects the nationalpsyche with gentle

irreverence, and playfullylampoons many of NewZealand society's obsessionsand taboos.

Themes run from rugbyfans, television evangelists, politicians and weddings to

male insecurities, technophobia, youth cultureand much more. Recentreviewers have madecomparisons to Fred Dagg andeven Noel Coward, and after arecent live performance onJim Mora's National Radioshow, one commentatorremarked “The AndrewLondon Trio are Flight of theConchords for Rest Homes.”

Neil Billington is arguablythe finest harmonica player inthe New Zealand. Billingtoncan electrify a room with hischarismatic and passionateblues stylings reminiscent of

Little Walter, Muddy Watersand Sonny Boy Williamson.

London and Billington havebeen frequent collaboratorsover the past 20 years.

They’ve played together atjazz festivals in New Zealand,Australia and Norfolk Island, and flew to Saudi Arabia in2010 to play for severalfunctions at the New ZealandEmbassy.

■ The Andrew London Trio, BentHorseshoe Cafe, Tokomaru,Friday, 7.30pm. Tickets cost $20,bookings are essential. Phone(06) 329-8808 to book now.

We had a wonderful weekend atTe Manawa being entomologists. The Discovery Time educatorshad us investigating bugs andcritters in Te Awa — The River. We used microscopes, did somedrawing and colouring of bugsand listened to stories.

The Lacemakers andManawatu Wood Workers Guildwere having a great timedemonstrating their skills in thefoyer, inviting people to have a goat their craft. We thoroughlyenjoyed the powerfulperformances in ‘Toi Amai’which left us riddled with goosebumps in The Dark Room —definitely keep an eye out forwhere this show will be next.

Unfortunately there’ll be noDiscovery Time this weekend dueto a busy weekend planned at TeManawa. We’re looking forwardto seeing the science based workof our local school children ondisplay for Saturday and Sundayduring the Fonterra ManawatuScience and Technology Fair.

Also on display will be‘Sunlight Dresses’ by UCOLFashion students. These dresseswere inspired by Te Manawa’supcoming summer exhibition‘Sunlight’.

On Saturday Te Manawa isholding the grand opening of

Pasifika: Treasures in theManawatu. Everyone’s invitedfrom 10am to be a part of thiswonderful community-inspiredexhibition; celebrating what it isto be Pasifika and living in theManawatu today. The Pasifikapeople of Manawatu have beenactively involved in guiding TeManawa throughout theexhibition development. Come

along and join in at any stage, there’ll be food vendors andperformances throughout theopening day at different times. Besure to make it to Te Manawa thisweekend, it’s a worthwhile outingfor the whole whanau.

At home with EnlivenWhen 58-year-old Paul Gerretzen had amotorbike accident in 1975, he sufferedsevere head injuries and his life waschanged forever.

Now Paul lives in a specially-designed, wheelchair-friendly home inPalmerston North and is supported dailyby Enliven’s Community Supportservices.

“I was 19 when I came off my bike,”Paul said. “I was injured really badly so Icouldn’t work anymore and I needed awalking stick. My dad encouraged me tocontinue with my plans to move out ofhome and get my own place. It was thebest thing he ever did for me and I’mglad I have my own independence.”

Paul explains things took a turn forthe worse when he suffered a strokewhich left him in a wheel chair.

“After my stroke I needed help withmost things in life so Enliven started

coming to give me a hand.”Anne, an Enliven Community Support

Worker, visits Paul every day to help himwith showering, dressing, cooking, cleaning and shopping.

“Anne helps me get up and getdressed in the morning, and she’salways happy and smiling even when I’mtired and grumpy. Then she preparesmeals for me so I can just heat them up inthe microwave; it’s really convenient forme as I can’t cook because gettingaround the kitchen is hard.”

Paul says he wouldn’t be able to stayliving in his own home without the helpof Enliven.

“I’d be lost without Anne; she’s beenvisiting me for the last 14 years and weget on very well. She is a very niceperson — she’s always willing to help mewith things.”

Benefits of home-based childcare

GDN140814barnardos

Kia Ora.My name is Kylie

Wakelin and I’m achildcare consultant forBarnardos KidstartChildcare.

I was born and raisedin Central Hawke’s Bay inthe small farming com-munity of Wallingford.

Three years ago myfamily settled in theManawatu.

My previous workexperience includesworking in communitymental health promotion, suicide preventionresearch and communitydevelopment roles. Before becoming achildcare consultant, Iwas a home-based educa-tor.

I have three gorgeous, fun children; Maike, 17,Aimee, four, and Ash,two, and being a home-based educator allowedme to stay at home rais-ing them while earning anincome.

A benefit to home-based care has been thestrong, lasting bondswith the children in mycare and their families. Westill play together today. My own children learnedto share and gained asense of community whilehaving adventures thatenriched them as individuals.

I have also used home-based care formy children and we still keep in touchwith our educator who’ll always have aspecial place in our family.

It’s a unique relationship and for manyparents one of the most appealingaspects of the home-based childcare.

The excellent child to educator ratiogives children the opportunity to form

strong connections and get plenty of one-on-one attention — both importantfactors in fostering their development.

In my role I’ve formed relationshipswith all of our fun and experienced localeducators and I can guide parents withgentle support and lots of information tohelp them on their journey meeting andselecting an educator.

I absolutely love my job.

Proud to focus on New Zealand product

GDN140718blanchetts

A view of Lake Pukaki (pictured)peering out to the magnificenceof Aoraki, Mount Cook in thedistance. What a beautifulcountry we live in.

Views of Aotearoa, New Zea-land make us patriotically proudof our country. Why then do wepurchase overseas product weproduce right here in thiscountry? We should be buyingproducts that are manufacturedas cleanly as possible andproudly crafted by New Zea-landers. Blanchetts Furniture of58 Napier Road, PalmerstonNorth, manufactures finehandcrafted soft furniture. Wealso encourage re-upholstery offurniture that has been madewith a solid frame foundation. The best gauge of this is to seehow heavy the corner of thefurniture is to lift.

We source our componentsfrom reputable suppliers whoare travelling the same path weare.

The timber used in our solidframes is sourced from South-land forest sustainably milledand under the Forest CouncilStewardship.

We use leather and foamproducts provided by New Zea-land firms and while the pro-cesses are not as clean as wewould like, we know these firmsare doing their utmost to pro-duce a product that is asenvironmentally friendly as pos-sible.

The question is then whywould we buy a product that isnot bound by these controls andis imported from a country thatdoesn’t follow the same stringent

controls that New Zealand has?Enough of ‘why would we?’ —

why not visit Blanchetts’ show-room to see for yourself the style

of furniture we make. Try theweight test on our qualityhandcrafted frames and watchthe processes used by skilled

craftspeople. Check out the res-toration and curtaining we alsodo.

Before you take to your wooden floor withthat steam mop — think again. While theymight seem safe, Nick and the team at CitySanding have seen many floors spoiled bythe use of a steam mop.

They have a fast track floor sanding andcoating system for businesses that need tobe back operating in two or three days.

“We offer quality products and exper-tise in a timely manner doing the jobcorrectly. Our floors are durable and gothe distance with coatings that last foryears.”

Public Notices

ENROLMENTS FOR 2015The school is currently accepting enrolments for Year 7 and 8 students in 2015.

Enrolment packs were distributed to all our main Contributing Schools last week and to those parents who attended our recent

Open Day. Enrolment packs are also available to ‘Out of Zone’ students from the school office.

Enrolments for all Home Zone and Out of Zone students should be in to the school office no later than Thursday, 28 August, 2014.

It is essential that all students, in zone and out of zone have their enrolment application in by this date.

The Board of Trustees have set the optimum roll for 2015 at 680 students.

The enrolment scheme, which includes a precise description of the Home Zone, may be viewed on the school website

www.pnins.school.nz under “Enrolments/School Zones” or at the school office.

The enrolment of Out of Zone students is welcomed and is governed by the provision of the Education Act 1989.

If the number of Out of Zone applicants exceeds the number of places available, students will be selected by ballot. If a ballot is

required it will be held on Monday, 15 September 2014.

All parents will have their child’s enrolment confirmed in writing within seven working days of the ballot being held.

What exactly does Spraytec do?

Primarily we are Automotive Paintersspecialising in touch-ups, repaints, restorationand we do minor panel beating work.

We employ only qualified tradesmen, ourexperience ensures a high quality end product.

Hydro-transferring is an exciting addition toour business and demand for this specialty isincreasing rapidly as a great alternative.

So hydro-transferring is a growingmarket?

I believe so. Customers are always on thelookout for alternatives for detailing theirvehicles.

This gives people the ability to enhancetheir chrome with hydro transfers as theycomplement each other well, or alternativelyuse them alone for a truly individual look.

For those that don’t know what it is,how would you explain it?

A spray painted basecoat is applied first;colours are chosen to suit the desired look

The item is then dipped through a patternedfilm such as carbon fibre, wood grain, camouflage etc

Following this clear coat is applied

The pattern is paint on a film, so it’s actuallylike a coat of paint, not a vinyl or a stick ontransfer

And you can have patterns on that?.

We are hoping to add personalised patternsto our range soon, however for now you canchoose from a huge range of off the shelfdesigns. It’s phenomenal the patterns youcan get. You can also change the look of thepatterns by using a different colour base coat.Like for wood grain, if you use a white base,it’ll give a bright wood finish where as beigedarkens it up, or if you do a dark brown youget a real dark wood grain. The patterns aretransparent, so depending what base you usewill decide on the finished result.

What sort of items have people beengetting coated?

Rockers covers, wheels, stuff like that really.Even helmets, engine accessories, we did a

hard hat for a guy the other day with skulls onit, interior trim pieces, its more of an accessorything. I’m often asked if we can dip a wholecar, no you can’t it needs to fit into a dippingtank, and the patterns aren’t that large.

How is it price wise compared topainting?

Well, you still need to paint the items first, scotch them down, get rid of imperfectionsetc. So the cost of painting a wheel is around$60-80 then on top of that you’re looking atabout $130 a dip, so you’d be looking around$200 plus GST for a wheel. Smaller items willbe cheaper as it depends on the amount ofpattern used. We’ve tried to price it so peoplewill use it.

And how did you get into it yourself?

A friend of mine purchased the system as hewas looking for something different to do.He told me about it, and I thought it soundedtoo good to be true, and I needed to see it tobelieve it. So he got it in and I gave him a handto set it up, and had a play with it. He was inneed of my assistance with the spray painting. We had some failures to begin with, but startedgetting the hang of it, then he sold his businessand building where the gear was. We decidedto move the equipment down to our workshop. My employee Sam and I had a bit more ofa play with it, till we perfected it to the pointwe could start marketing it. It’s been a longprocess, but the results are great now.

Good to hear. Thanks foryour time, and we lookforward to seeing what youdo with it next!
