M agical. How else to

describe summer in

the Berkshires, a

time so enchanting that even year-

round residents spend their vacations

here? From enjoying picnics and con-

certs on the lawn of Tanglewood, to

swimming and fishing the region’s

myriad rivers and streams, summer

offers delights to suit any taste.

Theater aficionados revel in an embar-

rassment of riches, from Shakespearean

tragedies to musical comedies and

everything in between. Music lovers

discover paradise, whether they savor

the classics, rock, jazz or bluegrass.

Festivals abound. Golf courses beckon.

The great outdoors offers recreation of

every kind, from mountain biking,

hiking and canoeing to camping, bird

watching and white-water rafting —

all amid a lush, green panoply of

majestic scenic beauty.

Discover historic sites and natural

wonders; lose yourself in some of the

finest museums in the world. It’s sum-

mer in the Berkshires, a magical time

of golden sunlit days and endless

balmy nights.

A utumn’s paintbrush

slowly dabs a dazzling

dress of color through-

out the mountains, inevitably creat-

ing a blazing panorama that lures

thousands every year. From the Green

Mountains of Vermont to the north-

ern hills of Connecticut, nature’s

vibrant display wends its way south-

ward, never ceasing to awe even those

who have seen it time and time again.

Foliage season always blends with har-

vest season, a time for apple-picking

or finding the perfect pumpkin,

selecting gourds, squashes and dried

flowers at farms and roadside stands.

Harvest festivals celebrate the land’s

bounty. Music, dance and theater

programs linger through the dimin-

ishing warmth, as sweater and jacket

weather arrives.

From the Apple Squeeze in Lenox and

Founder’s Day in Lee, to the annual

ramble up Mount Greylock in Adams

or the crowd-pleasing mammoth

parade in North Adams, fall has no

shortage of ways to please visitors to

this region or those lucky enough to

call it home.

S ome dread it; others can’t

wait for it to arrive. Winter

turns the region into an

outdoor playground for those who

find its frosty air and abundance of

snow invigorating and inviting. Those

who don’t can find solace by fireplaces

and woodstoves, fine dining amid ele-

gant settings, rediscovering the treas-

ures of our museums and libraries or

working out or relaxing in gymnasi-

ums and spas.

The Berkshires and southern

Vermont offer a Mecca for skiers,

snow boarders and snowmobilers.

Winter carnivals pay tribute to Jack

Frost, featuring snow and ice sculp-

ture and soothing cups of chowder or

hot chocolate.

The holiday season brings out the

decorators, from the garish to sub-

lime, and virtually every community

celebrates with tree-lighting cere-

monies, carol sings, luminaria and

holiday walks. Highlights include the

Norman Rockwell appeal of

Stockbridge Main Street at Christmas

and the ever-entrancing Festival of

Trees at the Berkshire Museum.

B erkshirites get a little

restless toward the end of

March, waiting for the

first crocuses to peek through the

leaves — or the lingering snow.

By mid March, they start cleaning off

their porches and patios, dusting off

their grills, buying their grass seed,

oiling up their fishing reels or tapping

their maple trees. By mid April, most

golf courses are open, some trout have

been stocked, and temperatures have

reached the tantalizing 60s or even

70s. By May, spring is in full bloom,

as first tulips and daffodils, then mag-

nolias, azaleas and crabapples burst

into flower.

The mud has dried, the snow is gone

from even the deepest, shadiest pock-

ets, and greenery creeps higher and

higher up the mountainsides. Hikers,

bikers and roller-skaters throng the

Ashuwillticook Rail Trail. Gardeners

till the soil. Berkshire Botanical

Gardens, the Mount and other attrac-

tions prepare for their busy season.

Tag sales and book sales appear.

It is, as always, a time of renewed

hope, rebirth and celebration.
