Introducción

• En una famosísima canción de

1961 escrita y cantada por Ben

King, se escucha la frase: “Stand by

me.”

Stand by me

When the night has come,

And the land is dark,

And the moon is the only light we'll see,

No, I won't be afraid,

Oh, I won't be afraid,

Just as long as you stand, stand by me.

So darling, darling,

Stand by me, oh stand by me,

Oh stand, stand by me,

Stand by me.

• Stand by me puede ser interpretado literalmente:

“Párate a mi lado,” pero su significado verdadero

es; “Apóyame.” “Ayúdame,” o “Solidarízate

conmigo.”

Para complicar aún más el asunto, stand by se

utiliza también para significar: “esperar.”

• Ejemplo: We’ll be back in a moment. Please

stand by.

Además puede ser sustantivo o

adjectivo: stand-by.

• Ejemplo: Sally’s flying stand-by

this afternoon.

Los modismos

Stand by es un modismo, igual que:

• Stand for = significar

• Stand up for = defender

• Stand in for = sustituir

• Stand out = destacarse

• Stand down = parar, desistir

• Take a stand =asumir una postura

• Stand the test of time = perdurar

¿Qué son los modismos?

• Los modismos son frases que no se pueden traducir literalmente.

• Tienen un significado muy particular dentro de la cultura.

• También se llaman “frases idiomáticas.”

Características de modismos

• Son metafóricos; es decir, comparan una cosa con otra.

• Utilizan partes del cuerpo para representar otras ideas.

• Utilizan colores para representar estados de ánimo o existencia.

Otras características

A veces comparan la conducta o la apariencia de los seres humanos a las de los animales. Por ejemplo:

She pigged out on French fries at lunch. (Ella se hartó de papas fritas en el almuerzo.)

Más características…

• En inglés, a menudo los modismos son verbos

frasales, es decir, verbos compuestos de un verbo

común vinculado a una preposición (por ejemplo, get

by, get over, get in with, get through, get along).

• Estas construcciones adquieren sus propios

significados que a veces son bastante lejanos del

significado original de las partes.

Adivinen el significado

Conclusión

• Los modismos forman parte

integral del inglés y deben

ser parte de su repertorio.

• Avivan el discurso y hacen

que las conversaciones sean

más coloquiales e

interesantes.

del idioma.

• Establecen una

interacción más cómoda e íntima.

• Son divertidos.
