ProgramsJuly 14 — Los Angeles Lakers. Gary Vitti, LA Lakers Trainer

July 21 — Rotary Exchange Student. This meeting will NOT be held at the Marriott. We will be meeting at Lido di Manhattan Beach.

July 28 — City of Manhattan Beach. Mark Danaj, Manhattan Beach City Manager.

Where’s Geoff???Despite the induction of Geoff Bremer as our newest President, he was no where to be found at or near the podium. And despite 60+ years of history and tradition, he opted to bail on his first meeting, and we were guided by Past President Roger Cox, while struggling with his version of the “Queen’s English.” Say it ain’t so, Joe…to honor our Kiwi, tables were decorated with miniature sheep, along with sheep droppings.

Roger recognized Steve De Baets on his birthday and Richard Acker-man on his 33rd Anniversary of membership in our Club. He then thanked Kent Caldwell for another outstanding skit at Kathleen’s demo-tion and awarded him a signed soccer ball of Rotary team members.

We were entertained by two of our newest members and their Craft Talks.

Sue VoglSue was born in Canada, raised in Danville, IL (where her father was a Rotarian), and attended college at Indiana University in Bloomington. Upon graduation, she capitalized on her journalism major and landed a job as a writer for the Indianapolis newspaper. From there she moved to California and for the next 3 years was Director of Publications for Long Beach State University. That led her to USC take on the same role as Director of Publications, a position she has held for 26 years. She is responsible for all publications, including news and social media. Her position also allowed her daughter to attend USC tuition-free.

As a community volunteer, she completed Leadership Manhattan Beach in 2010, teaches at her local church and was chair of the Inter-sorority Parent’s Council.

She is also an avid runner and has traveled and run with a running group through many countries throughout the world. She announced today that she is going Part-time at USC, which will allow her more time to spend with her family and more community service.

John GardnerJohn was born and raised in Pasadena, both of his parents being physi-cians. He works for the Bank of Manhattan and is a graduate from UC Santa Barbara. Since he is unmarried, he crows about his sister’s children as a dutiful uncle.

In a unique moment, he became a Deputy Commissioner of Civil Marriages for a day and married two of his close friends. (So far the marriage remains legal). He also dons a wig and sings in a cover band, which is live band karaoke singing, at St. Rocke in Hermosa Beach and is an avid beach volleyball player. Kent Caldwell has his eyes on him for future demotions.

Welcome to both Sue and John and thanks for your interesting talks.

Wot’s In The Box?The meeting was turned back to Roger, who brought out his infamous Styrofoam boxes to play again “What’s in the box?” Les Silverman guessed which fish has been around for over 300 years, has 3 hearts, the male dies after mating, has blue blood and is tenderized by many by throwing the fish into a washing machine (I hope it wasn’t a Web Washer). That’s right, it is the Octopus and for guessing correctly, Les pulled out a genuine Wagu beef steak from New Zealand.

The second box was auctioned off with proceeds for Rotary. Harris Bass and Wade Austin traded bids with Wade winning with a donation of $210. He was the lucky recipient of a very large Tazmanian Ocean Trout, suitable for the barbeque. I’d tell you the weight, but it would seem like a fish story.

Thanks to Roger for his excellent meeting. Who needs Geoff any-way??

Yours in Rotary,Jim Hunter

Object of RotaryThe Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:FIRST: The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for ser-vice;SECOND: High ethical standards in business and professions; the rec-ognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to serve society;THIRD: The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian’s per-sonal, business, and community life;FOURTH: The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional per-sons united in the ideal of service.

RI Programs Rotary International offers a broad range of humanitarian, intercul-tural, and educational programs and activities designed to improve the human condition and advance the organization’s ultimate goal of world understanding and peace. Nine structured programs and nine service opportunities help clubs and districts achieve their service goals in their own communities and in communities abroad, fostering fel-lowship and goodwill in the process.

Rotary Service Above Self World Community Service has been described as the “quiet revolution of hope.” Isn’t it time for you to:

… Reach out to someone who needs help.… Develop a relationship with a club in another country.… Become acquainted with customs and culture of a faraway place.

Get InvolvedWelcome to our New Members! Become more than a member of your Rotary club, become a Rotarian. Get involved in your club, your community and your world through the opportunities offered by our Rotary club and Rotary International.
