The CollegeMissionManhattan College is an independent Catholic institution of higher learning that embraces qualified men and women of all faiths, cultures, and traditions. The mission of Manhattan College is to provide a contemporary, person-centered educational experience that prepares graduates for lives of personal development, professional success, civic engagement, and service to their fellow human beings. The College pursues this mission through programs that integrate a broad liberal education with concentration in specific disciplines in the arts and sciences or with professional preparation in business, education and engineering.

Established in 1853 by the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, the College continues to draw its inspiration from the heritage of John Baptist de La Salle, the innovator of modern pedagogy and patron saint of teachers. Among the hallmarks of this Lasallian heritage are excellence in teaching, respect for human dignity, reflection on faith and its relation to reason, an emphasis on ethical conduct, and commitment to social justice.

OverviewManhattan College (College) was founded in 1853 by the Brothers of the Christian Schools, a Catholic teaching order started by Saint John Baptist de La Salle. The Lasallian mission drives a focus on quality education for all and service to all neighbors in need. The picturesque campus is located in the residential Riverdale section of the Bronx, 10 miles and a 30-minute subway ride from Midtown Manhattan.

Manhattan College is recognized for excellence in providing a distinctively engaging educational experience grounded in its Catholic and Lasallian (or Lasallian Catholic) commitment to education as both a search for wisdom and a means to contribute to the greater good of the human family. The College has enhanced and expanded its reputation for excellence chiefly by building on its core strengths: its Lasallian Catholic heritage, its location as a residential campus in New York City, and its ability to offer, in a medium-sized and person-centered college setting, an extraordinarily broad range of disciplinary, interdisciplinary, and co-curricular opportunities.

Lasallian Catholic HeritageManhattan College is a Catholic institution in the Lasallian tradition founded in 1853 by the Brothers of the Christian Schools, a teaching order started by Saint John Baptist de La Salle, patron saint of teachers. The word “Lasallian” is derived from De La Salle’s name, but is much more than just a label. The Lasallian tradition created a new type of school system and elevated the work of teaching school – treating it as a profession and a vocation. The Brothers were urged to go beyond rote memory to “touch the hearts” of the students. Practical subjects were taught that would lead to a useful role in society; religion was taught to impart a commitment to Christian ethics.

Today, Manhattan’s Lasallian heritage is an integral part of who the community is and how it lives out its mission.

Faith in the presence of GodWe believe in the living presence of God in our students, in our community, and in our world. The Lasallian school nurtures an awareness of the world through the “eyes of faith.”

Respect for all peopleWe honor and respect the dignity of all individuals. The Lasallian school nurtures respect-filled relationships as an expression of all being made in the image and likeness of God.

Quality educationWe engage in quality education together as students, staff, and faculty by thinking critically and examining our world in light of faith. The Lasallian school prepares graduates to contribute to and transform society.

Inclusive communityWe celebrate diversity and welcome all members to our community. The Lasallian school community embraces the uniqueness and sacredness of all people.

Concern for the poor and social justiceWe are in solidarity with the poor and advocate for those suffering from injustices. The Lasallian school promotes

The O’Malley School of Business shares with the rest of Manhattan College a commitment to the development and growth of each student. Inspired by Lasallian tradition, the mission of the School of Business is to prepare students from diverse backgrounds for the challenges that they will face as business and community leaders. The faculty of the School, as teachers, scholars and mentors, foster the development of the whole person by integrating a values-based education with current business theory, skills and practices.

In order to accomplish the mission of Business, the curriculum is structured to achieve a balance of liberal arts courses and professional business courses, thus bringing together liberal education and professional business preparation. The program in liberal arts is divided among the areas of humanities, mathematics, sciences, and social sciences. PresidentBrennan O’Donnell, Ph.D., has served as the 19th President of Manhattan College since July of 2009. President O’Donnell came to the College after five years of service as the dean of Fordham College at Rose Hill, Fordham University. Prior to his tenure at Fordham, O’Donnell spent 17 years at Loyola College in Maryland (now Loyola University Maryland), where he served as a professor of English and, from 1999-2004, director of the university-wide honors program. At Manhattan, he continues to hold a faculty appointment, as he did at Fordham and Loyola, as professor of English.

Significant advances during President O’Donnell’s tenure include growth and diversification of academic offerings and increased student support services. The Center for Academic Success has been expanded and provided with modern, centrally located facilities, increasing the opportunity for peer-to-peer tutoring and learning. The College also has added several career development and mentorship programs with alumni and other partners, giving students the tools needed to succeed in college and after graduation.

The College has also undertaken major facilities upgrades under O’Donnell’s administration. The Raymond W. Kelly ’63 Student Commons opened in 2014 and the Patricia and Cornelius J. Higgins ’62 Engineering and Science Center will open in the fall of 2020. Thomas Hall (dining facilities) and De La Salle Hall (the home of the O’Malley School of Business), have also undergone significant upgrades, as have athletic facilities, including the opening this year of the Gaelic Park Athletic Center. In 2016, the College installed a historic set of stained glass windows depicting the life and work of Saint John Baptist de La Salle in the Chapel of De La Salle and his

Brothers.During the past decade, fundraising has increased significantly, with $129 million received in restricted and unrestricted contributions over the period, including more than $16 million last year. In addition, the College has in the past several years received twenty-three gifts or pledges of over $1 million during the “silent” phase of its current capital campaign, including a commitment of $25 million, the largest in College history, from Thomas D. O’Malley, for whom the School of Business was named in 2018. Last June, the College’s endowment climbed above $100 million for the first time in the College’s history, representing an increase of 130 percent over the decade.

President O’Donnell currently serves on the Board of Trustees of Lewis University and on the Board of Directors of the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities. He has also served as a board member at La Salle University, the Commission on Independent Colleges and Universities (cIcu), the Lilly Fellows Program, and Collegium, a consortium of Catholic universities that strives to strengthen faculty understanding of and participation in the mission of Catholic higher education.

President O’Donnell earned his B.A. with highest distinction and honors in English at The Pennsylvania State University in 1981, where he was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. He earned an M.A. and a Ph.D. at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in English and American literature and language. He is married to Angela Alaimo O’Donnell, a poet and writer who teaches at Fordham, where she serves as associate director of the Francis and Ann Curran Center for American Catholic Studies.
