I am only a beginner, but loving the experience of the gentle way we move. It is very relaxing and I love the class (Diane)

Tai Chi has improved my balance and coordination as well as having a relaxing and calming effect. I would highly recommend it as an enjoyable activity (Carol Steele)

Tai Chi has improved my balance considerably and my physio had noticed my improvement. It’s a very relaxing time. (Marie Manns)

Tai Chi at the Wellness Centre is a fun and gentle way to exercise. For me the benefits include improved balance and flexibility as well as giving the brain a bit of a workout, remembering the formations. Its a calming, relaxing, no pressure and super friendly class; definitely my favourite hour in the week. I would recommend Tai Chi to anyone, any age, any fitness level. It is just an enjoyable thing to do. (Alison Hopkins)

I find Tai Chi not only beneficial for balance and strength but also for the social gathering and fun we all have with our lovely instructor Kim. (Judy)

Cheerleading Classes - Expression of interest

We are seeking expressions of interest for a new exercise group, to take place at Manjimup Home and Community Care, focusing particularly on upper body movements. For all abilities, including wheelchair users. Cheerleading movements aid to improve muscle coordination and body balance. Some of the major muscle groups used while performing routines include upper legs, hips, abdominal muscles, shoulder muscles, chest, and back.

A cheerleader is a member of a team who performs cheers and dance routines usually for a sport group. Although we won’t have pom-poms and a club to cheer for we can still experience the benefits and fun cheerleading provides.

Classes will be taught by a professional dance teacher.

ANZAC Biscuits

Crispy or chewy? Our MHCC boss Liz, kindly made us some Anzac biscuits for Anzac Day - 25 04 19’

There has been quite a lot of discussion on the radio about Anzac Biscuits. When they were first made to send to the troops in WW1 , they were a simple recipe but of later years different ingredients have been added e.g. fruit, nuts, coconut, sugar etc. Coconut is a popular addition but it wasn't feasible in the early days because quite a lot of the stock had weevils. Hence a num-ber of other different flavours have been used and of course there is the controversy as to whether they should be crispy or chewy. The original recipe produces a chewy and easy to eat biscuit.

Thankyou Liz yours were just right!

Boronia Club Intergenerational Day

Manjimup Home & Community Care’s Boronia Club recently welcomed a group of Pre- schoolers and their mums, to join in the fun with people living with dementia. The faces of the mostly elderly clients, lit up with joy as young and old were introduced, sang songs and exercised together and the children seemed equally delighted by the interaction. This intergenerational program was instigated by the Manjimup Family Centre who approached Manjimup Home and Community Care (MHCC) with the idea. Needless to say MHCC were delighted by the concept. Bringing young and older people together benefits both generations. Getting involved in intergeneration connections provides people with the opportunity to develop social and communication skills as well as how to be caring and kind hearted. Generations continue to teach each other about life and inspire each other. The Family Centre will continue to bring their playgroup children to Boronia club on a monthly basis.

Next Intergenerational Day: Monday 17 June

ARE YOU READY FOR WINTER?

Storm Safety

FROM May to September rain, gale force winds and squalls are characteristic of weather experienced by WA residents from Geraldton to Esperance. Severe storms accompanied by lightning, hail and flash flooding can cause damage to homes and properties if homeowners and residents are unprepared. Residents can minimise this damage by taking a few simple steps to prepare for winter storms and stay Storm Safe. You can start by preparing your home and surrounding property in late April or throughout May: Carry out a roof and gutter inspection of your home Clear gutters and downpipes of leaf litter Ensure branches are trimmed clear of your home and power lines Secure and tidy your yard of loose objects Ensure you have a torch and radio with spare batteries ready inside your home

What should I do during a storm?

If you're home when a storm passes through, be sure to stay inside and away from windows. Close curtains or blinds Ensure pets and animals are secure Turn off electrical appliances don't use landline telephones (mobile phones are safe to use during a

storm) If caught outside, seek shelter in a vehicle or building but don't shelter under trees. If driving during a storm, pull over and park until the storm

passes.

The Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety

As you would be aware, the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety (ACRC) announced in September last year, has been holding public hearings since February this year. To date, there have been hearings looking at the overall aged care system and also specifically at services providing care for people living in their own home.

While the vast majority of Australia’s aged care services deliver good quality care, there have been some distressing stories reporting incidences of poor care as part of the Royal Commission. We believe that all older Australians should be able to expect high quality care, and at Manjimup Home & Community Care we strive to provide that each and every day.

If you have internet access you can visit the Royal Commission engagement page to learn more or you can contact the ACRC via email at [email protected] or on 1800 960 711.

If you or your family have any concerns about the care you (or your loved one) is receiving please contact myself Liz Lockyear, Manager at [email protected] or by telephoning 9771 6900.

You can also directly contact the following agencies for advice and support, and the Older Persons Advocacy Network (OPAN) can also assist you in making a submission to the ACRC.

Older Persons Advocacy Network: www.opan.com.au/advocacy or 1800 700 600

Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission: www.agedcarequality.gov.au; 1800 951 822 or [email protected]

We at Manjimup Home & Community Care remain committed to providing the highest quality care and are here to support you and discuss any queries or concerns you may have with the issues raised during this time.

Yours sincerely,

Liz Lockyear

HAVE A GO AT SUDUKO!

How to Play Suduko?

Sudoku is a puzzle involving logic - no arithmetic or guessing is required! The basic idea of completing puzzles is to find cells (the small squares) where you are sure that only one value is a valid placement.

The Basics

The rules of Sudoku are that you should fill a number in to every cell in the grid, using the numbers 1 to 9. The restriction is that you can only use each number once in each row, each column, and in each of the 3 x 3 boxes.

Royal Commission Charter of Rights

Over the next few weeks your support worker will be giving all Manjimup Home & Community Care clients a copy of the Charter of Aged Care Rights. The Charter of Rights is a result of the current Royal Commission into Aged Care and is another step in ensuring that consumers are receiving the highest quality care they deserve. Under the aged care law, it is a requirement for all aged care providers to give their clients a copy of the charter. Support workers will be able to assist consumers in understanding these rights if required. There will also be copies of the charter available to clients at the Wellness Centre reception, so if your support worker has not brought you a copy, please come to the office if possible and pick up your copy.

Don’t hesitate to call the office if you have any queries regarding this Charter of Aged Care Rights. 97716900
