Academic Excellence Personal Best Giving Back to the Community

From the Principal Student Representative Council Leadership Camp

On Monday and Tuesday this week our student leaders began their planning for 2019 at the annual SRC Leadership Camp held over two days at the Elanora Conference Centre. I look forward to further discussion of the ideas generated during these two days and working closely with our SRC throughout the year.

Northern Beaches Secondary College Student Leadership Day

This morning I had the pleasure of attending the Northern Beaches Secondary College Student Leadership Conference at Manly Golf Club. At this event, our 2019 Year 12 Student Executive members were inducted into the NBSC Leadership team, presented with their badges of office and participated in a number of networking activities with leaders from the other campuses. The engaging keynote address was given by Mr James

Griffin, Member for Manly, who shared his leadership journey. He spoke of the importance of building mental resilience through looking after your physical health and working out what works best for you. James also encouraged our student leaders to push their limits and learn from failures rather than allowing it to erode confidence. The formula he shared that ‘bad times + good reflections = best lessons’ resonated well and is a good reminder for everyone.

Invictus Games

Our Year 10 students spent today at the Invictus Games and, by all accounts, had a fun, educational and informative day cheering on these amazing athletes. A full report of the day will be provided in next week’s newsletter.

In this regular feature we like to recognize students who have achieved highly in school and community events, competitions and activities. Demonstrations of the school ethos of academic excellence, personal best and giving back to the community deserve to be recognized. Parents are invited to phone or email the school any achievements we may not be aware of for inclusion in The Weekly Pines.

From the Deputies When we are being told it is hopeless, we take action!

On Tuesday, two Year 10 students, Lauren Griffiths and Luka Vadjic presented at the whole school assembly on behalf of the Environment Committee. They delivered an impassioned speech that addressed the issue of climate change and what we as a school community could do in response.

They referred to the recent media releases surrounding the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) report released earlier this month; a report that highlighted the need for even more stringent global emissions targets than already outlined in the 2015 Paris Agreement. Many of these media releases have included alarming headlines that often describe a dire situation for how global warming is being addressed at both local and international levels.

Lauren and Luka spoke of the effect this media attention may have in creating a heightened sense of urgency, and even despair, amongst their generation as they face issues that are often described as insurmountable. But, they also spoke to their generation of the importance of not becoming apathetic when faced with such challenges.

There was optimistic energy underlying the students’ address, a positive message to our school community members to take control of their actions and assume individual responsibility for their contribution towards reducing the global impacts of pollution. They provided practical tips and advice on how this could be achieved.

This week’s whole school assembly provided another example of how our students demonstrate their leadership skills. Furthermore, it is reassuring to see the next generation take action in the face of what is described as the biggest global challenge they will face.

Year 11 Parents - Assistance needed

It is a tradition at NBSC Manly Campus for Year 11 parents to serve a light supper, funded by the P&C, at the Year 12 graduation. This year's event is on Monday 12 November at Freshwater Campus Gymnasium.

Our task is to serve the food and drinks, and clean up afterwards. Up to 600 students, parents, and guests are expected to attend the function.

We need approximately 18 people to help at different times during the afternoon and early evening: help needed to deliver and transport items from 2pm on the day, some help to set up and make up the fruit punch from 3pm, following to plate up and serve food and also helpers to clean up from 6:15pm.

Please contact Nir Yaffe (Year 11 parent organiser) on [email protected] or 0416 131 090 as soon as possible if you can help.

Year 7 Swim Program All students in Year 7 will commence the swim program during Wednesday Sport next week (31st Oct) The first week will be a theory session, where students will learn about first aid, beach safety and rips. This session will be held in the school library.

The practical sessions for the swim program will begin in Week 4, 7 November and run through to Week 9, 12 December. Students will leave school at lunch time to be taken to Dee Why beach by bus and return to school by approximately 2:30pm. Students will need to bring a hat, swimsuit and or board shorts, towel, shoes or thongs and a drink bottle. Wetsuits are optional. Sea Australia will provide rash shirts for sun protection and identification and are compulsory to wear. It is recommended that students also bring warm clothing to put on once they are out of the water and returning to school. All students are required to apply sunscreen prior to start of session.

If you have any questions, please speak to Jen Walker or Leanne Low in the PDHPE Department.

AGM and Term 4 Band meeting Monday 26 November at 8 pm, library. Note: NEW DATE

Come to the AGM to find out what’s happening with our band program and consider joining the friendly and enthusiastic group of 20+ parents who make up the band committee.

The band committee is especially seeking the involvement of parents from Years 7-10 age groups as parents from senior years are moving on.

Helping our bands – a win/win!

• The band program thrives when good people like you help out.

• Helping out is a fun and truly rewarding way to get to know the students, staff and parents.

• There is a role to fit your work hours, skills and interests – some are regular throughout the year, others are short term.

• Most band committee members are working parents so there is no expectation that you are free mid-week. The committee meets one night per term.

• To find our more, email Band President Mel Corner at [email protected]

Semester Two Band Fees

Would you like to be a part of an innovative learning program where your expertise develops and supports 21st Century skills?

Australian Business Week (ABW) 2018 Monday 3rd– Friday 7th December 2018

ABW is an innovative program involving year 10 students from across NBSC campuses learning about business by running their own company, being mentored by a person in business. Each business mentor works with a group of 10-12 students. They inspire and provide business advice and support for the students throughout the week.

The Business Mentor is the most important link in the process of ABW.

Business mentors are the key to this program as they give the students their invaluable insight into the business world.

The business mentor will be attached to a group of participants. Each company will have two mentors – a business and teacher mentor. Throughout the week, as a business mentor you will act as consultants to assist students to operate their business.

You will help students to: • understand the complexities of their company roles• make decisions based on information and data• select personnel needed for the operation of their company• manage meetings and meet deadlines.

You will act as a facilitator to help them: • learn how to find their own answers• discover where to find the materials they need to develop their service• understand the complexities of operating a business• develop and market the new product.

The most successful companies become self-managing with your mentorship.

How much time will the business mentor need to commit? Ideally, the business mentor will be available for the whole week. However, we realise that this is a substantial commitment for some people and therefore the alternative would be a commitment to be available on the first 2 days and the last day of the program.

If you would like to become involved as a business mentor in 2018 or to learn more about ABW please contact:

Vicki Busse, Project Officer Northern Beaches Secondary College Administration Centre 02 9939 6942 or email [email protected]
