Welcome from your chairmanHELLO EVERYONE and welcome to our July meeting.

As I write this I have news of members putting their names forward for the committee. Wonderfulnews as our U3A, as all others, cannot function without a committee. I do not like to keep on aboutthis issue but it is important as the committee is there to try and see that our U3A runs according tothe official guidelines, helping groups. Social events are planned by our Social Committee, a greatjob they do too.

The committee has to ensure health and safety, ensuring money for the U3A is monitored and soon. Boring stuff you may think, but we try to make it enjoyable and in the process learn something, which is what the U3A is all about.

July hopefully will be a good summer month but beware St Swithin's day, 15th of July. “St Swithin’sday, if thou dost rain, for 40 days it will remain, St Swithin's day if thou be fair, for 40 days it will rainnae mair.” Let’s look on the bright side and hope for fair.

I wonder how many of us read the U3A sources magazine? The ideas that people have for groupactivities is amazing. One that caught my eye is called “Gentle Exercise”.

As it says some gentle exercise is performed but coupled with a chat, jokes, memory games. I knowI would benefit from that, and of course company, a very important part of our lives as we growolder. Please anyone who has an idea for a group we are on hand to help; we have an excellentgroup coordinator, so there is nothing to stop you.

I have just attended a meeting of enthusiastic U3A people helping to promote the proposed newU3A at Forest Town. It is hoped to launch the new U3A on the 3rd of September at 14.00 at St.Albans Church, Forest town. Please pass on this news to anyone you may think would be inter-ested in this venture, leaflets available soon.

Keep thinking “SUN” and hopefully summer will now start and we can enjoy it!Bob Longden______________________________________________________________________________

Recent Events

Lake District Holiday 22nd to 26th June FORTY-SIX passengers from the Mansfield and Sherwood U3As left Mansfield at 9.30am onMonday June 26th.

Our route to Penrith took us along four differently-numbered motorways until we stopped for a latemorning break at Ena Mill, Atherton, a few miles West of Manchester. This is an old cotton mill, andthe whole of the ground floor has been altered into a retail outlet, selling almost everything. The caféwas the most important part for many of us!

Carrying on Northwards, we briefly stopped at Tebay services. For most of us, this was a revelation– more like a high-class farm shop than a motorway service area. Beautiful displays or meats, cheeses and other luxury groceries were tempting us to buy – what a pity we didn’t stop there onthe way home.

Our hotel in Penrith was very good. The rooms were clean, spacious and comfortable, and the foodwas very good, both in choice, quality and quantity.

As is usual with Margaret Burlinson’s holidays, we hit theroad running, starting off with a cruise on Lake Windermere, from Bowness to Ambleside and back.

In the afternoon, we went to Grasmere, a delightful littlevillage with a lovely church and the graves of WilliamWordsworth and his family in the churchyard. There is alsoa tiny gingerbread shop with just enough room for twocustomers and two assistants behind the counter. It goeswithout saying that the gingerbread is made to a secretrecipe, 250 years old! A helicopter was parked in the fieldnext to the churchyard and took-off in front of us. Richpeople who had flown-in for lunch at the hotel!

Wednesday saw us in Cockermouth, William Wordsworth’s birthplace. Most of us visited the housewhere he was born, with its delightful garden. It is now in the stewardship of the National Trust. Theafternoon saw us in Keswick, where most of us visited the Pencil Museum, or the Puzzle Museum. The vast array of pencils that are made in the Lake District is staggering – we were even shown apencil made for bomber crews in the war that contained an escape map and a compass! The wholeenterprise started with a chance find of graphite in the nearby hills.

Our last full day, Thursday, saw us on the water once again, this time on Ullswater. We had a ridefrom Pooley Bridge to Glenridding and back with time, as always, for morning coffee. A small groupof the more energetic members did a 7-mile walk to Aira Force Waterfall. The coach driver tookmost of us into Penrith after the Ullswater cruise, where we enjoyed a stroll round the shops, beforewalking back to the hotel.

Friday saw us on our way home. We had a decent stop in Skipton, where it was market day, andthe coach was soon filled up with plants and soft fruits!

All in all, a most enjoyable few days, and many thanks to Margaret for once again organising ahappy holiday for us.Max Clarke (01623 621744; [email protected] ) Photos on the website ...

______________________________________________________________________________Groups News International DiningWE MET up on Wednesday evening June 10th to enjoy a Fish and Chip supper at Coxmoor GolfClub. (Fish pie for those who didn't want fish and chips and Coxmoor very kindly catered for theone member who is allergic to fish.)

It was well attended and enjoyed by 24 members with 6 coming along from U3A Ashfield U3A, all inthe true spirit of U3A. The next venue, on July 8th, is Blue Chilli Thai restaurant, Mansfield.Jacqui Hampshire (01623 239210; jhampshire09@ talktalk.net)

Read at Little AloudOUR SESSION in June was a contrast to our former more-serious one. The novel from which theshort passage was taken was 'The Handbag' by Dorothy Whipple. It told of a woman's cleverexposure of her husband's affair with a lady colleague on the local council. We delighted in hercomposure when she first found out about it, and the delicious revenge she had on them both at apublic event.

There followed tales (no names!) of occasions when couples who thought they were safe in rendez-vousing in far-off places were surprised and discomforted by being 'lit upon'. 'Be sure your sins willfind you out' might have been the theme, but it was actually called 'Men were deceivers ever.' Thetwo men in the group may have felt 'got at' but the tables will be turned when a woman's infidelitiesis the choice of story at a later date!

Our next meeting will be on Friday July 17th and we will decide then whether August 14th will beviable, even though most groups are not meeting in that month. I know it is usually women who liketo do the talking, but we do like contributions from our chaps. There is still room for a few more!Sheila Haslam (01623 627764; [email protected])

ArtOUR JUNE meeting was a good session where most members worked on the suggested subject,Botanical Drawing. The others worked on previously started work. Members brought along previouswork that was now completed for others to see.

We are now able to accept two members into instant membership. Don’t all rush! If there is agreater demand we would create a waiting list as we arrange a move to a premise that would allowa much larger membership.

We took part in the Picnic in the Park event at Rufford on 1st July displaying a selection ofmembers' work arranged in a collage measuring 120cm x 90cm that will be on-show again at theJuly meeting so that all can see the quality of work being accomplished by members of our ArtGroup. Our thanks go to all members whose work is to be on display.

Next meetingIf the weather is fine on July 15th, there will be an opportunity to go to a local attraction to dosome outdoor painting. The hall will be available for any who want an alternative or if theweather is inclement.Gordon Howlett (01623 627423; [email protected])

Digital WorldATTENDANCE at recent meetings has been so low that this group will now only meet at members'request on mutually-convenient dates to discuss any camera and editing problems and share tips.

Meetings will still be at the far end of the bar at the Foxglove in Forest Town, opposite ASDA, soplease ring me if you want help or just to chat. There is no charge and refreshments are availablefrom the bar. David Ling (01623 822994; [email protected])

Local HistoryIN MAY, the Local History Group heard a talk on Ada Lovelace, poet Lord Byron's daughter. Herreputation as one of the first women to be associated with computers was discussed and manythings of interest concerning Lord Byron.

Our group tries to arrange visits to complement the talks we have, so Sue arranged a visit to News-tead Abbey on June 5th and a guide led us through the house to many rooms we had not previ-ously seen, with many details of the history of the owners and of course stories of Byron. One aboutBosun, the poet's dog that unfortunately died after contracting rabies when bitten by a dog in Mans-field, highlighted one of Mansfield's many links to Newstead Abbey.Bob Longden (01623 486903; [email protected] ) ______________________________________________________________________________North Notts Neighbourhood GroupIT WAS wonderful to see so many of you enjoying yourselves at our annual wing ding. In spite ofthe heat we wined and dined, welly-wanged and wilted and finally after melting we moved to themusic.

I walked what seemed to be miles around the event and thanked as many helpers as I could butsome I could not reach. Please thank them all on my behalf for the great displays of the interestgroups, the outdoor events and the musical programme.

Neighbours like you make my dreams come true!”Rita Turner Chairman, NNNGroup Photos on the website …
