About The Author-------

1.Anees Jung is an Indian woman author, journalist and a columnist for major newspapers in India and abroad, whose most noted work, Unveiling India(1987) was a detailed chronicle of the lives of women in India.

. Jung came into the limelight with the publication of Unveiling India in 1987, which is a travel diary focusing on interviews with women. . She has written several subsequent books on the same, talking to women about their everyday lives, including Night of the New Moon: Encounters with Muslim women in India. (1993), Seven Sisters (1994). Breaking the Silence (1997) is based on conversations on women's lives from around the world. . Beyond the Courtyard (2003) is based on interviews with the daughters of the women she had talked to first in Unveiling India, and many of the horrifying tales continue

Anees Jung's Lost Spring: Stories of stolen childhood (2005) focuses on children from deprived backgrounds, and includes the story of Idrees, a child who is kidnapped and forced to work in the carpet industry in Mirzapur. Others are maltreated by alcoholic fathers or married off early or sexually abused, though some find refuge in schools set up by well-meaning NGOs. A section of this book is part of the English curriculum in many Indian schools.

.Other books by Jung include When a place becomes a person (1977) and The Song of India (1990).Jung is noted for her lively and vivid descriptions, but she rarely provides any solution to the many problems she describes.

Now, In this chapter, Anees Jung expresses her concern over the exploitation of children in hazardous jobs like bangle making and rag - picking. Grinding poverty and thoughtless traditions result in the loss of childhood innocence, education and play. The result is back breaking hard work, dismal working conditions and acceptance of poverty and exploitation as destiny. There is an absolute need to provide their poverty - stricken people, particularly children, a life of dignity and opportunities to dream and do.

--Saheb is the son of two parents who migrated from Bangladesh. They came to Delhi in 1971 as their house was swept away by repeated storms. --Then they began to live in Seemapuri, a slum of Delhi. --Saheb like many other children of the slum was a rag picker. They searched the rags and garbage and tried to find out coins.

--Sometimes they found one rupee coins and sometimes even ten rupee coins.--Saheb did not attend any school as there was no school nearby. He was too poor to wear chapels. --Saheb liked the game of tennis. Someone gave him a pair of tennis shoes. But he would never get the chance to play the game himself. --At last, Saheb got employed in a tea stall. He was not happy as he had lost his freedom. But he had no choice in the matter.

----The life of Mukesh at Firozabad was no better. Mukesh lived with his elder brother who was a bangle maker. --He wanted to be a driver and a motor-mechanic, not at all eager to continue bangle making. But the people thought that it was their karam or the result of their karma in the previous birth that they were born into the caste of bangle-makers.

--So they were destined to make bangles and they could not do anything else. --Thousands of children are engaged in bangle making and many of them lost their eyesight before becoming adults. --They did not know that it was illegal for children to work in that hazardous condition in the glass factories.

--The story is the same in every family. Mukesh took the writer to his house where the writer came to know that his grandfather had become blind working in the factory. --Similarly in another family, the author came to know how the husband was happy that he had been able to make a house for his own family to live in but the wife complained that she did not get a full meal in her whole life.

--Hundreds of years of slavery had killed the initiative of people to think of a better life. --They carried on their miserable life as they did not have the courage to rebel against tradition. --They did not have money enough to start their own new kind of enterprise. If someone dared to start a new line, there were police, middle-men, sahukars and politicians to persecute them. Police, middle-men and others would not allow them to take any other vocation.

--Justice after all is the right of the rich and the powerful, not of the helpless like Mukesh.The condition of the life of Saheb or Mukesh was far from desirable. It should not be allowed to continue. But some people must bell the cat. The writer was happy when he came to know that some young men like Mukesh was ready to take the plunge, rebel against tradition and start a new life.

Theme Of the story----

“The idea behind the theme is to create awareness about child labor and what ordinary people can do to abolish it. We want people to know that employing children is a punishable offence. We can start by stopping our neighbor or even ourselves from employing children. We can start by finding the child a school,” says Barry O’Brien, the convener of the annual awards. Given the ambiguity in various laws governing child rights and welfare, the RTE is till now mostly on paper. West Bengal hasn’t even finalized the rules governing the implementation of RTE, which has been done in states like Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat and Rajasthan.
