    MANTHAN INAUGURATION

    The theme of Manthan 2015 was Choices, Chances and Changes. Manthan 2015 was kicked off in grand style with sharing of experiences from some of the most remarkable minds across the country. We followed that up with a musical extravaganza, a treat for the soul indeed as we explored our theme through music in the presence of a maestro.

    The event was graced by Dr. S Parasuraman , Director TISS who was as always candid and enlightening in his talk and demeanor. The Dean of the School of Management and Labour studies, Dr. D.K. Srivastava introduced Manthan and our guest of honor which was followed by the ceremonial lighting of the lamp. Other distinguished members of the faculty were also present for the event.

    Our guest of honor, Mr. Pushp Kumar Joshi, Executive Director - HR, HPCL gave us an inspiring talk that helped set the stage for the fest and tied in beautifully with our theme of Choices, Chances, Changes. The relevant life lessons combined with witty anecdotes made it an extremely enjoyable and enriching experience for all those present.

    From inspiring talks to rousing music, Manthan15 set out to explore its theme through various perspectives. Helping us through this musical sojourn was Violinist, HR professional and recipient of the Indira Gandhi Priyadarshini award for excellence, Ms. Sunita Bhuyan. Ms. Bhuyan took us on a tour of India and abroad, showing us glimpses of different kinds of music and relating them to the theme of Manthan.

    SRIJAN One of the most popular HR case study competitions across the nation, Srijan lived up to its reputation this year as well with two challenging rounds that tested the business and HR acumen of B Schoolers. The first round was an innovative and challenging online HR crossword testing the knowledge and awareness of participants regarding core theory as well as contemporary trends and events. The second round was a case study sponsored by DHL Global Fowarding dealing with change management in a logistics environment.

    Participants

    The final round had five teams in total hailing from XIM Bhubaneswar, SIBM Pune and SCMHRD.

    The Case

    One of the most challenging scenarios for an HR manager is handling change in the midst of ambiguity. The Srijan case dealt with a forwarding company in the midst of transitioning to a new, more intuitive Information System resulting in changes in almost every sphere of the organization, from the structure to reporting to business processes. The implications of such a shake-up on the people are always severe and the participants were called upon to tackle challenges like training challenges, high attrition, dropping brand value, low motivation etc. Keeping the logistics context in mind they designed comprehensive processes to deal with the multitude of issues ranging across the various domains of HR Management.

    The Judges

    MsPriyankaJhais an alumnus of IMT, Ghaziabad and is currently Manager-Opertions and C&B at DHL Global Forwarding. With nearly ten years of experience in the domain of HR she has previously worked with organizations like Aditya Birla Retail Ltd and Pantaloon Retail India Ltd.

    Ms. SapanaPayyazhi is Manager-Resourcing and Engagement at DHL Global Forwarding. With nearly a decade of experience in the field of HR she has worked previously with Pantaloon Retail India Ltd.

    Dr. P. Premalatha is Associate Professor, TISS, with the Centre for Human Resources Management and Labour Relations, School of Management and Labour Studies. She has obtained a PhD from TISS Mumbai.

    Winners

    After gruelling sessions of ideating and mulling over the dynamic challenges of the case two teams, both teams from SCMHRD, stood as winners.

    DAKSYA

    Daksya is the toughest Industrial Relations campus event straight from the campus of Personnel Management and Industrial Relations. This year, the case tested the ability of the contestants to adapt to the ground reality of Increasing growth, expansion, generation gaps and changing aspirations.

    Participants

    Total No. Of teams: 140 Registered, 110 Participated. 6 Teams reached the finals.

    Finalists (5 Teams): SCMHRD Pune, SIBM Pune, XIMB Bhubaneswar, IIM Indore and Maharashtra Institute of Labour Studies (MILS).

    The Case

    The Case was about a Cement Factory in West Bengal where the profitability was declining every year and wage Burden increasing due to numerous factors like Low Productivity, Absenteeism, High Overtime and resistance to change. To make the case more challenging the participants were given only Six hours to crack it. To give the participants a feel of real IR scenario one more round of negotiations was also kept apart from case study.

    Judge

    MrN.S.Iyer, G.M. (HR) Asian Paints, who has a vast experience in Industrial Relations and Labour Laws Presided over as the Judge.

    Winners

    After two gruelling rounds of case solution presentation and negotiation, the judge awarded the 1st and 2nd prize to XIMB and MILS respectively.

    The ultimate leadership challenge of Manthan 2015 consisted of two rounds an online business quiz round followed by an on campus simulation of an assessment centre. The online round that was conducted on 15th January 2015 saw the participation of 70 individuals across different B-Schools. The top seven candidates were chosen for the on campus round.

    Participants

    The seven finalists from some of the best B- Schools in the country such as JBIMS, FMS, K J Somaiya, MICA, SCMHRD battled it out for the coveted first prize.

    On Campus Round

    The simulation of the assessment centre comprised of rounds such as a business case discussion followed by the leadership speech and role play. Participants were tested for certain leadership competencies based on the OPQ competency framework.

    Judges

    Graduated from TISS in 2009, Ms. PoojaGoenka joined DDI from campus and worked there till early 2014. At DDI, she was handling assessment centres, competency frameworks, behavioural interviewing, testing, online assessments and 360 degree surveys for various clients. Later, she started her own employee engagement consulting firm called MFF (Making fun Fun) in 2013. She has been working on employee engagement diagnosis as well as engagement activities for client organizations. Ms. Pooja has also been freelancing with various consulting companies like DDI and Deloitte as an assessor and trainer on a project basis.

    Ms. RuchiChalluis a Learning & Development (L&D) Specialist with a decade of cross- functional experience in the areas of talent development, team management, business development and media operations within the services industry. A graduate in sociology with global certifications within Organizational Behaviour and People-Management, Ruchi brings with her a diverse experience of having worked across large and start up organizations such as Times of India, Today Group, Storyite (USA) etc. With +6000 training hours to her credit, her areas of expertise include the entire gamut of Talent Development: Training Needs Analysis (TNA), Module Design, Training Delivery and Training Evaluation based on competency frameworks.

    JIGYASA Jigyasa is one of the most popular quizzes in the western quizzing circle. The only event of Manthan which attracts both Student and the Professionals from the corporate world with equal ardor, it has been constructed to test intellect, swiftness and a heady dose of an adventurous spirit.

    Finalist Teams: 9 (7 from Offline prelims + 2 from Online prelims)

    Format

    Jigyasa was a Business Quiz with Online & Offline Prelims and Finals. An online quiz was conducted a prior which gave the winners a direct entry to the finals. The Online and Offline Prelims had 20 and 25 questions respectively. Finals consisted of five rounds and had generous dose of audience questions. All the rounds except round 3 followed a modified infinite pounce method. The presence of negative marking on pounce made the quiz very interesting.

    T!PLAN Tplan! , a business plan competition was launched in Manthan this year and had a phenomenal beginning, receiving entries from the best B-schools across the country. A total of 74 teams participated for the event. The competition was a platform for participants to pitch their ideas to a panel of elite judges comprising of Angel investors, Venture Capitalists and CEOs of trending startups.

    Format

    The event was held in three rounds. The first round was summary round wherein participants had to send a summary of their business idea. Out of the 74 entries received for this round, 5 teams were shortlisted for the final presentation round. To guide participants in refining their plan, a team of three mentors were allocated in the second round of the competition. The final round was the presentation round which saw the teams from IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Indore, SPJIMR, Mumbai, NITIE, Mumbai and Great Lakes Institute of Management, Chennai present their ideas to the judges.

    We value each teams was affirmed when the team from Great Lakes Institute of Management were provided on-Skype presentation platform to pitch their ideas while they were unable to make it to the competition due to last hour glitches.

    Profile of Mentors and Judges

    Mentors

    Vijay Kalangi , the Chief Product Officer at KNOLSKAPE. For more than five years, he has been pioneering new technology based solutions in the education domain. He is also the founding member of EduMile, a non-profit organization that focuses on micro-financing in the education space. He holds a Masters degree in Mathematics and Bachelors degree in Computer Science from BITS, Pilani, India

    Prof. SwapanGarain, is a CEO, Social Entrepreneur, Professor, Social Work Educator, NGO Consultant, Non-Profit Manager, Social Business Mentor, Trainer and Guide to charitable and volunteering work. DrGarain has been a member of the Government of Indias Planning Commission Steering Committee on Voluntary Sector for the 10th (2002-2007) and 11th (2007-2012) Five year plans.He has worked in setting up and managing NGOs, promotion of social entrepreneurship, involved in facilitating government policy making and appraising projects for funding.

    Prof. Parag Shah is the Founder Chairman and the Founder Director of Foundation for Liberal and Management Education (FLAME). He is currently the Chief Mentor of MIDAS an acronym for Management, Innovation, Design, Arts and Social Sciences. MIDAS has recently joined hands with Mondrgaon University from Spain with 21 intentional

    incubation Centers.Mr. Shah so far taught and mentored over 200 students to become entrepreneurs. His forte is to teach Product Development and Innovation, Entrepreneurial Strategy, Critical Thinking and Sales Strategies for Entrepreneurs

    Panel of Judges

    Vikram Gupta is the Founder, Managing Partner and Investment Committee Member at IvyCap Ventures Advisors Private Limited. He has about 16 years of experience in Private Equity, Business Consulting, M&A, Strategy and Operations in Healthcare and Life Sciences, Education, Consumer Goods and other industries. He has held leadership positions across various well-known companies in India and Abroad. Prior to founding IvyCap, Mr. Gupta was the Chief Operating Officer (COO) with IndiaVenture Advisors Private Limited, a Private Equity Fund Management company sponsored by the Ajay Piramal Group.

    Sameer Parwani is the founder and CEO of CouponDunia, India's most popular coupon code site. He is a Computer Science graduate from Cornell University. He was born and raised in the USA but shifted to India to ride the growth in Indian e-commerce.

    Mikunj Josh is the CEO and founder at Indus Ventures, an angel investing firm which invests in early stage startups, low income urban real estate and public/private equity. Prior to this, he has worked in the US for more than 11 years at a number of startups. He founded EMS Webware, a document management startup, in collaboration with University of Massachusetts Lowell Incubator. He is a Computer Science graduate and an MBA from University of Massachusetts, Lowell

    CASTING A SHADOW OF GREATNESS: PRESENTATION OF BUSINESS PLAN

    T!BATE T!Bate was the Asian parliamentary debate spectacle that stretched over 5 days and saw 34 teams consisting of 102 participants battling it out for the top spot.

    Participants

    T!Bate saw strong participation from colleges in and around Mumbai. The participating colleges were-MICA (Ahmedabad), SJMSOM, SIBM (Pune), Government Law College, KJ Somaiya, JBIMS, NMIMS, TISS (Mumbai)

    The Topics

    Each tournament saw themes covering a plethora of diverse topics such as politics, economy, international relations, public affairs and legal issues.

    The Finals

    T!Bate was the final event of Manthan drawing a large crowd of debating enthusiasts.

    Adjudicators

    The competition was adjudged by an expert panel of three. The panel consisted of:

    Sonal Jena- A National Law School gold medallist, he has adjudged over 150 parliamentary debates including debates like Asian Universities Debating Championship, National University of Judicial Sciences Debate and National Law School Debate.

    Meenakshi Ramalingam- An Economics honors from St. Xaviers, Mumbai, she has adjudged several high profile Parliamentary debates such as Xavier-PD and Taashi (National level PD of Lady Shri Ram College, University of Delhi)

    Meenal Gakhar- A Bcom Honors from Shri Ram College of Commerce, she has adjudged prestigious Parliamentary Debates in the Delhi University circuit like the SRCC debate.

    The final round was an extremely close one with the adjudicators going in for a split verdict. Both the final teams were from TISS.

    Team JabberWocky: The team consisted of a mix of students from Clinical Psychology, Social Work and Climate Change. The team has considerable experience in the Delhi University debating circuit. The team consisted of Chaitali, Ajeetha and Gautham.

    Team QED: An all HR team consisting of SrivastavIyer, SiddharthSrivastav and AparnaVittal Das.

    The Best Debater

    Though the entire tournament saw some brilliant debaters but the judges verdict was unanimous in giving SrivastavIyer the crown.

    T!PLAY

    The Street Play Competition was organized under Manthan for the first time. Any social issue that was plaguing the society could be demonstrated by the teams in the compulsive street play style. The event was a massive crowd-puller and in true TISS style highlighted some important and pressing issues to receive massive acknowledgment and applause.

    Participants

    The event was open to all the colleges/Institutes/NGOs across Maharashtra. 10 teams performed their play on the day.

    Topics

    Plays on the theme of condition of police, system of caste, LGBT, female foeticide etc were performed.

    Panel of Judges

    Miss Anisha George, Project Co-ordiantor- National Streets for Performing Arts, Mumbai. A fervent social activist who was associated with the Vidrohi Cultural Movement in Maharashtra and has previously worked with the Right to Food Campaign in Jharkhand and other states.

    Mr. RupakSharar, handled multiple portfolios, actor and Associate Creative Head & Writer for Television & Print Media for wide range of shows since last 7 years.

    The Winners

    The teams made it super difficult for the judges to decide on the winners. Nevertheless, first prize was awarded to The Green chappals from TISS Tuljapur, and the second prize was awarded to Udaan from TISS, Mumbai.

    ANTARAAGINI Antaraagini is the annual dance extravaganza. This immensely popular event sees participation from dance enthusiasts across Mumbai. It is also the most awaited event of Manthan with the entire TISS student community turning up in huge numbers to support and cheer on a fabulous display of grace and music. This year we hosted multiple age groups and multiple colleges and an audience of close to 700 people with two categories of dance Solo and Group

    Participants

    There were 30 performers on the final day 12 in Group dance and 18 in the Solo category. Team across difference dance schools/Schools/Colleges participated.

    Judges

    Ms. EktaBakshi An instructor from Dancing Passions, Ekta has worked with the Bollywood heartthrob RanbirKapoor in the Nissan Micra car ad. She currently teaches dance to kids

    Mr. MatinShaikh Matin is also an instructor in Dancing Passions and has choreographed events for corporates, colleges and schools. He has worked with the companies of Reliance, Glenmark and many more. He is also a highly sought after wedding choreographer.

    TATTVABODHA Tattvabodha, the annual business conclave organized as a part of Manthan, has always been a jewel in the crown of the School of Management and Labour studies, TISS. This year we chose to tackle a topic that has devoured our time and attention like no other Make in India. While many un-answered questions from the past remain, new ones are emerging every day. To this end, we asked the sharpest minds of the country from various walks of life to engage in a frank debate and discussion so as to clear the many doubts that haunt the common man.

    This year, the Tattvabodha format saw a significant change with a Keynote address followed by a panel discussion and finally the sharing of stories based on Choices, Chances, Changes by some inspiring do-ers.
