Singleworkstationinstallation
Tocarryoutasingleworkstationinstallation,select“Applicationanddatabase”atthebeginningoftheinstallation.Youwillnowbeguidedthroughtheroutinebythedialogsandcanchangethedefaultpathssuggestedbytheprogram.AftersuccessfulinstallationyouwillfindVet-ExamplusundertheitemoftheWindowsstartmenuselectedduringtheinstallationandasanicononthedesktop.
Networkinstallation
Iftheprogramisinstalledinanetwork,allworkstationsneedtobelinkedtothedataba-sedriveinthesameway.Youhavetoassignadrivelettertotheserverpath(drive)ateachworkstation.Thisdrivelettermustbeidenticaloneachstation.Inorderthattherearenoconflictswithexistingdrives,youshouldselectadriveletterneartheendofthealphabet(e.g.X,YorZ).Keepinmindthatallaccessrightsforthenewdrivesmayhavetobeset.

Notesondatabackup
Necessity
Abackupofthedataisabsolutelynecessarysincethefailureofthesystemcanleadtoalossofdata.Adatabackupalsoprotectsyou,however,againstdatalossescausedbyoperatorerrorsordestruction(fire,water,etc.)ofthesystem.ThedatabackupmustnotbeconfusedwiththeVet-Examplusarchiving,becauseonlyimageswiththecorre-spondingdatacanbeexternallystoredusingthearchivingfunction.
Vet-Examplusdata
TheimageandpatientdataofaVet-Examplusstand-alonestandardinstallationcanbefoundinthedirectoryC:\Vet-Examplus\dbsdata.Ifyouhavenotusedthestandardinstallation,youcancheckintheconfigurationmenuundertab"SystemInfo"wherethedatahavebeenstored.Detailscanbefoundinsection“Configuration".
Methods
Ifyouwishtobackupthedataonyourharddisktoastreamertapeorotherbackupmedium(strea-mer,externalharddisk,etc.),youdonotnecessarilyhavetocopyallthefilesateverybackup.Onceinstalled,theprogramfiles(e.g.MicrosoftWindows,MicrosoftExcel,etc.)generallyremainunchan-ged.Itisnotnecessarytobackthemupontapeeveryday.Ontheotherhand,itshouldbepossibletorestoreallchangesandnewfilesofaworkingdayatanytime.Youshouldorganizeyourdatabackupoptimallyusingacombinationofthefollowingbackupmethods.
FullBackup
Allfilesaresavedfromallsub-directoriesofaselecteddrive.Everybackupprogramallowscertainfilesordirectoriestobeexcludedevenfromafullbackup–e.g.thebackupprogramproper(becausethiswouldhavetobeinstalledfromtheCD-ROManywayintheeventofasystemcrash)ortempora-ryworkingdirectories.
IncrementalBackup
Anincrementalbackup-unlikeafullbackup–savesonlythosefileswhichhavebeenchangedsincethelastbackup.Inadditiontothefilenameandthefiledate,everyfilehasanidentifierorarchiveflag.Inafullbackupthisidentifierisdeleted,itwillbesetagainbyeachsubsequentwriteaccesstothefile.YoucanrestoretheconditionofyourPCtoanarbitrarydaybyusingafullbackup.Thisisparti-cularlyusefulifyounoticeadeficiencyinadatabaseoravirusinfectionsomedayslater.Thelatestbackupcouldincludealreadydeficientfiles.Theincrementalbackupaloneholdsariskhowever.InordertocompletelyrestoreyourPC,youfirsthavetorestoreanoldfullbackup.Thenyouhavetoreadinallcreatedincrementalbackupsinsuccession.Onlyinthiswayisitpossibletobesurethatallchangesarereallyreconstructed.Thiscanbeextremelytimeconsuming.Therefore,itisusefultointelligentlycombineincrementalbackupsandfullbackups.
Backupstrategies
Withacombinationoffullbackupsandincrementalbackups,youcanrestorethedataatanytimeuptothreemonths.Shouldevenonebackupmediastreamertapebedestroyed,theproceduresdescri-bedhereguaranteethatyouwillnotbeleftwithalossofanygreatconsequence–andneveratotaldataloss.Onlythechangesofasingledaymaybelost.Theproceduresdescribedaresuitable,ofcourse,foreverybackupmedium,e.g.forZipdrivesorstreamertapes.Toensurehighdatasecurity,youwillneedninestreamertapes(orchangingmedia).
