Choosing a place for the printer

When selecting a place to set up your printer, choose a safe, convenient location that provides the following:

    t A flat, stable surface

t Adequate room around the printer to allow easy operationand maintenance. Make sure its close enough to the computerfor the printer cable to reach.

t Place the printer where you can easily unplug the power cord.

t Moderate environmental conditions. Select a cool, dry areaand protect your printer from direct sunlight, excessive heat, moisture, or dust.

t Appropriate power source. Make sure you use a groundedoutlet; do not use an adapter plug. Avoid electrical outletscontrolled by timers or wall switches; an interruption inpower can wipe out the information in your computer or

    printer memory.

If you place the printer on a stand, follow these guidelines:

t Use a stand that supports at least 10 kg (22 lb).

t Never use a stand that tilts the printer. Always keep it level.

t Provide enough clearance below the stand and between the

legs so your continuous paper flows smoothly.

t Place cables so they do not interfere with paper feeding;secure them to a leg of the stand if possible.

    Getting the results you expect

When you print on single sheets, you may notice that the printerprints the first page of your file correctly, but then prints too low

on the next page, or that it prints the last few lines from one pageonto the next. This happens because single sheet handling differsslightly from continuous paper handling.

Its easy to adjust the printer so that you get the right results.Simply change some of the settings in your software program asdescribed below.

    1. When you install a software program, it normally asks youwhat printer you are using. Make sure you choose the correctprinter. See Chapter 1 for instructions.

    2. Many programs have an option that you can use to set themaximum lines-per-page. If you are using standard8 1/2 11-inch paper, set the lines-per-page to 61.

    Note:

To find the right lines-per-page setting for paper that is not8 1/2 11, create a test document using your software program. Set

your top and bottom margins to 0 and then create a file of numberedlines from 1 to 66. When you print your file, notice the last number

printed on the first page. This is your maximum lines-per-pagesetting.

    3. If your program doesnt have a lines-per-page setting, try

decreasing the top margin or increasing the bottom margin, orboth, until you get the results you want.

    4. You can also try adjusting the form length setting. For astandard 8 1/2 11-inch page, try setting the form length to10 inches.

    5. Some programs let you indicate whether you are using singlesheets or continuous paper. Make sure you choose singlesheets.

    Printing on Continuous Paper

Your printer can handle continuous paper with a width of 101 mm(4.0 inches) to 254 mm (10.0 inches). Depending on where you

position the tractor, you can use it as a pull tractor or a pushtractor. These guidelines can help you decide where to positionthe tractor:

t Do you want to switch between printing on single sheets andcontinuous paper without removing the paper supply? Willyou tear off continuous paper sheet-by-sheet? Use the tractorin the push tractor position. (The printer comes with the

tractor installed in this position.) See the following section.

t Are you printing on labels, multi-part forms, or otherdocuments that require a precise print position? Use thetractor as a pull tractor. See page 2-11 for instructions.

    Printing with the push tractor

When using the push tractor, it is a good idea to set the Auto tearoff feature in the Printer Setting mode to on. See Changing thePrinter Settings on page 2-19. Heres how to load continuouspaper using the push tractor:

    1. Make sure the printer is turned off. Remove the paper guideand place the paper-release lever in the continuous paperposition.

    3. Close the cover. When you finish printing, move thepaper-thickness lever back to position 0.

    Multi-part forms

You can use the built-in tractor to print on carbonless multi-partforms of up to three parts (one original plus two copies). Beforeyou print on the forms, set the paper thickness lever as describedin the previous section. These tips will help you get good results:

t Load multi-part forms with the tractor only, not in thecut-sheet feeder or paper guide. For instructions, see Printingon Continuous Paper on page 2-7.

t Use only multi-part forms that are joined by spot gluing andthat are free of wrinkles and waves. Never load multi-partforms joined by metal staples, tape, or continuous gluing.

t If you need to adjust the loading position, use your softwareprogram or change the loading position as described on

    page 2-5.

t When you use side-crimped multi-part forms, the copies maynot align with the original. If this happens, raise the paper guide.

    Labels

You must use the tractor as a pull tractor to print on labels. Keep

    these tips in mind:

t Choose labels mounted on a continuous backing sheet withsprocket holes made for use with a tractor. Do not print labelsas single sheets, because the shiny backing sheet almostalways slips a little.

t You load labels the same way you load continuous paper,

except that the paper thickness lever should be set to 1. Seepage 2-11 for loading instructions.

    Using the Printer 2-17

  • 7/27/2019 Manual Lx300 u1

    51/96

t Because labels are especially sensitive to temperature andhumidity, use them only under normal operating conditions.Make sure the printing stays entirely within the printable area.(See the Appendix for specifications.)

t Dont leave labels loaded in the printer between jobs; they curlaround the platen and may jam when you resume printing.

t To remove the labels from the printer, tear off the fresh supplyat the rear of the printer; then press LF/FFto advance theremaining labels out of the printer.

cCaution:Never feed labels backward through the printer; they can easilypeel off the backing and jam the printer. If a label does becomestuck in the printer, contact your dealer.

    Envelopes

You can feed envelopes individually using the paper guide.

t Before loading an envelope, set the paper thickness lever to 2or 3. See page 2-16.

t To load an envelope, follow the steps in Running the SelfTest on page 1-10. Insert the wide edge of the envelope intothe printer first, printable-side down. When you insert theenvelope between the paper guides, push it firmly and hold it

until it feeds into the printer.

t Use envelopes only under normal temperature and humidityconditions.

t Make sure the printing stays entirely within the printable area. The print head must not go past the left or right edge of theenvelope or other thick paper. (See the Appendix forspecifications.) Its a good idea to print a test sample using a

normal single sheet of paper before you print on the envelopes.

    Changing the Printer Settings

Your printer has internal settings that control simple functionssuch as the page length and character set. These settings take effect

each time you turn on the printer, so they are also called defaultsettings.

Because the factory printer settings are designed to meet the needsof most users, you probably will not need to change them. SeePrinter Settings on page A-9.

    Note:

Because software settings always override the printers default settings, use your software program to control the printer, if possible. See yoursoftware documentation for more information.

If you cannot use your software program to change the printerssettings, you can use the Printer Setting mode. Heres how:

    c

    Caution:

Use paper at least 210 mm (8 1/4 inches) wide for single sheetsor 240 mm (9 1/2 inches) for continuous paper; otherwise theprint head prints directly on the platen.

Also make sure you have enough sheets of paper because theprinter prints several pages of help text.

    1. Turn off the printer; if you use continuous paper, make sure

    the paper is loaded correctly.

    Printer setting descriptions

This section describes all the settings available in the PrinterSetting mode.

    Character spacing

When you select 10 cpi, the printer prints 10 characters per inch(cpi). When you select 12 cpi, it prints 12 characters per inch.

    Shape of zero

The printer prints the zero character with a slash (0) when thesetting is on, or no slash (0) when the setting is off. The slashed

zero allows you to easily distinguish between an uppercase Oand a zero when printing such items as program lists.

    56/96

    Skip-over-perforation

When you turn on this feature, the printer skips over theperforations of continuous paper, providing a 1-inch margin

between the last line printed on one page and the first line printedon the next. Because most software programs set their own topand bottom margins, you should use this feature only if yourprogram does not provide them. This feature does not affectsingle-sheet paper.

    Character table

Character tables contain the characters and symbols used in

different languages. Your printer includes a wide variety ofcharacter tables. See the Appendix for specific characters.

    Auto line feed

When the auto line feed feature is on, each carriage return (CR)code is accompanied by a line feed (LF) code. If your printed textis unexpectedly double-spaced, set this feature to off. If text lines

print on top of each other, set it to on.

    Page length

This option is available only when you use continuous paper withthe tractor. You can set the page length to 8.5, 11, 12, or 70/6 (thelength of A4 paper) inches.

Auto tear offWhen you use continuous paper with the push tractor, this featureadvances the paper perforation to the tear-off position where youcan easily tear off the printed pages. When the printer receivesdata, it automatically reverses the paper to the top-of-formposition and starts printing, so you can use all of the next sheet. When you use the tractor to print on labels, set this feature to off.

    Tractor

When you use the tractor as a pull or push tractor, leave thisoption set to Single. If you install an optional tractor and use both

tractors as a push-pull tractor, set it to Double.

    Interface

When this feature is set to Auto, the printer determines whichinterface is receiving data and switches to that interface until theend of the print job (when no data is received from the selectedinterface for the amount of time specified). You can specify either10 seconds or 30 seconds.

Set this option to Parallel only if you want the printer to ignoredata from the serial interface or to Serial only if you want theprinter to ignore data from the parallel interface.

Bit rate, parity bit, data length, and ETX/ACK

These options are available only when the interface is set to Serial.

See your computer manual for the appropriate settings.

Most problems you may encounter while operating your printerhave simple solutions.

You can check the operation of your printer using the self test. SeeRunning the Self Test on page 1-10. If the self test worksproperly the problem probably lies in the computer, the software,or the interface cable. If the self test does not work, contact yourdealer or qualified service person for assistance.

    Note:

If you are an experienced user or a programmer, you can print ahexadecimal dump to isolate communication problems between the

printer and computer. To print a hex dump, turn off the printer. Next, hold down the LF/FFand FONTbuttons while you turn on the printer. Then send data from your computer. The printer prints all the codes itreceives in hexadecimal format.

    Power Supply

    Power is not being supplied

The lights on the control panel do not go on.

Check that the power cord is properly plugged into the electrical

    outlet.

If the electrical outlet is controlled by an outside switch orautomatic timer, use a different outlet.
