Important Safeguards

1. Disconnect the powerline plug from the electrical outlet when changing needles, feet, or

needle plates, or when leaving machine unattended, This eliminates the possibility of starting

the machine by accidentally pressing the speed controller.

2. Before removing the bobbin case, disconnect the powerline plug from the electrical outlet.

3. Because of the up and down movement of the needle, work carefully and watch the sewing

area when operating the machine.

4. Do fiot pull the fabric while stitching as this may deflect the needle, causing it to break,

5. Before cleaning the machine, disconnect the powerline plug from the electrical outlet.

6. Do not attempt to adjust the motor belt. Contact the nearest service center or an authorized

dealer should any adjustment be required.

7. Before changing the light bulb, make sure the powerline plug is disconnected from the

electrical outlet. Be sure to replace the face plate which covers the light bulb before operating

the machine.

8. This machine is designed to use a 15 watt maximum light bulb only.

9. This machine is double insulated. When servicing product, use only Identical replacement

parts.

This product is suppressed for radio and television interference with the International

Electrotechnical Commission requirements of the CISPR.

2. GETTING READY TO SEW

To really enjoy sewing, get to know the machine well. This chapter will he valuable in

doing just that.

Connecting the machine

Connecting the Controller

NOTE: Before plugging in the machine, be sure the

electrical information on the label (1) below the

handwheel agrees with the local electrical supply and

power switch is in the “OFF’ position.

Push plug (2) into the receptacle (4) at the right end of

the machine. Then, connect plug

(5) to an electrical outlet.

Push speed controller plug {/) into receptacle (8) also on

the right end of the machine.

Conexión del controlador

NOTA: Antes de enchufar la máquina, asegúrese de

Running the Machine

To turn on machine and sewing light, press portion T' of

power switch (3). To turn off machine and light, press

front portion “0” of power switch.

To run the machine and control speed, press the speed

controller (6) with foot. The harder it is pressed, the faster

the machine will sew. To stop machine, remove foot from

the controller.

NOTE: Do not operate machine without fabrie under the

presser foot as this may damage the feed and the presser

foot.

Changing Snap*on Presser Feet

The accessory feet supplied with the machine fit

onto a common shank and are attached easily as

follows;

* Raise needle to highest point by turning the

handwheel towards the operator.

* Raise presser foot using lever on rear of

machine.

* Pus!) up on toe of presser foot (1) until it snaps

off shank (2) and remove foot.

Place new foot on needle plate with pin (3) under

center of shank.

Using presser foot lifter, lower shank onto pin {3}

and push down firmly on presser foot screw (4) until

foot snaps into place onto shank.

Changing Screw*on Presser Feet

Special feet which have built-in shanks are replaced as follows:

* Raise needle and presser foot.

* Loosen presser foot screw (4) with a coin and

remove presser foot with shank (5) guiding it

towards the operator and to the right.

Changing Needles

« Raise needle to highest position by turning handwheel towards the

operator.

* Loosen needle clamp screw (1) and remove needle.

* With flat side of needle to the back, insert new needle into clamp (2) as

far as it will go.

* Tighten needle clamp screw (1) securely.

Check the Fabric, Thread and Needle Chari in this book for correct needle

and fabric combinations.

Removing Needleplate

For either cleaning or use of the straight stitch plate, available from

an approved dealer, do the following:

♦ Raise needle and presser foot to their highest position.

♦ Open slide plate and place thumb under right side of needle plate

(3).

♦ Lift up and pull plate to the right to remove it from the machine.

* Holding needle plate as shown, slide it to the left

under the head of clamping pin (4),

securely in place.

Attaching Feed Cover For darning and free-moMon embroidery, the

feed cover prevents the feed from moving the

material. Attach ft as follows:

* Raise needle and presser foot, and open slide plate.

♦ Slide feed cover on top of needle plate, pressing tabs (1) and (2)

into holes in needle plate. Then, close slide plate.

• To remove, open slide plate, lift front edge of cover (3) and pull it

away.

If operator prefers to do these operations by removing presser foot and

shank from machine, be sure presser bar is lowered to maintain proper

thread tension.

Attaching Darning and Embroidery Foot

A special presser foot is included as an accessory for use in darning,

embroidery, and machine basting. Attach it to the machine as follows:

• Raise presser bar (1) and remove existing presser foot with

attached shank following directions under “Changing Screw-on

Presser Feet”.

♦ With need Ien the up position, guide darning and embroidery foot (2)

onto presser bar from the rear of the machine, hooking it around the

bar (1) and under the screw (3).

* Make sure tab (4) of foot is fitted on top of the needle clamp screw

(5). This provides the automatic lifting of the foot for manual

positioning of the fabric when needle is in the “up” position and out

of fabric. ♦ Tighten screw (3) snugly using a coin. Un prensatelas especial se incluye como accesorio para su uso en zurcir, bordado, y la máquina de hilvanado. Winding the Bobbin

Winding of the bobbin is done before threading machine:

* Place spool of thread on spool pin (1).

* Choose size of spool holder (2) to fit spool. Slide it onto pin snugly against spool to keep spool from turning.

♦ Lead thread into top thread guide (3) by snapping it down into top of guide with two hands.

♦ Proceed to thread tension (4) wrapping thread once around in a clockwise direction.

• Guide end of thread through small hole in top of bobbin (5) and place bobbin onto bobbin winder (6).

* Push bobbin winder to the right to engage the drive system and to disengage sewing mechanism for winding.

♦ Hold thread end coming through hole in bobbin and start motor. Wind slowly. Stop after a few turns to trim end, then continue winding to desired fullness.

NOTE: Bobbin will stop turning by itself when full, but sewing mechanism must be reset by the operator.

* Release speed controller and push winder to the left to reengage sewing mechanism.

* Hold bobbin so that thread unwinds in a

counterclockwise direction, as shown, and

place bobbin in bobbin case (1),

• Pull thread into notch (2), draw it back under

Threading the Machine

The top thread is now ready to he threaded into the machine, Proceed as follows: * Raise needle and presser foot to their highest positions. * Lead thread from spool on spool pin and snap into top thread guide (1) by grasping thread with two hands and

snapping it down into top of guide, * Following arrows in illustration, guide thread across top of machine, down the right hand channel through the

tension discs, under the bottom of the chan* nel separator (2), and up the left hand channel, * At the top of the left thread channel (3), pull the thread to the left into the self- threading take-up lever and then

down to the needle going through guides (4) and (5) on needle clamp. NOTE: Do not thread lower guide (5) if you are using heavy thread. * Lower the presser foot and thread the needle from front to back drawing about 4 inches (10 cm) through the eye

of the needle.

Raising the Bobbin Thread

The last step in threading the machine is to

raise the bobbin thread. Proceed as follows:

• Raise presser foot

♦ Hold needle thread lightly with the left

hand and turn handwheel one complete

revolution by hand.

Adjusting Needle Thread Tension

Bobbin thread tension is preset by factory but the

top thread tension can be adjusted to suit different

sewing situations.

* For most stitching, setting the tension from 3 to 5

should produce satisfactory results.

Cloth Plate

The cloth plate provides a large surface to help

support and guide the garment during sewing

operations. The majority of applications are best

performed with the cloth plate in place.

for professional finishing of cuffs, sleeves, and

trouser legs, the cloth plate can be removed to

allow the garment to be placed around the

tubular bed of the machine.

The micro computer in this machine provides an outstanding number of stitches for all

sewing tasks. Not only are they easily selectable, but they can be used in many different

With this machine there are 103 patterns available to the user. To assist you in identifying

them and determining their basic usage, they are listed on the following pages by name

Audible Signals

This machine Is equipped with a signalling

device which indicates, by means of short tones,

that the electronic control center has either

accepted or rejected a command from the

operator.

♦ If the command is valid, the machine will

sound a short “beep” tone.

Instant Pattern Buttons

This machine makes sewing easier for the user by

providing buttons for instant selection of the three most

used stitches: straight stitch, zig-zag, and blind stitch.

* When main power switch is turned on, straight stitch

is automatically selected. This stitch is shown on the

pattern selection indicator (1).

* During any sewing operation, the user may select

one of the three instant access stitches by pushing

the button (2,3, or 4) with the picture of the desired

stitch on it.

The operation being interrupted remains in memory

and may be resumed at any time by following

directions given later in this book.

Normal Pattern Selection

All patterns available to the user, except buttonhole, are shown on the pattern display panel. With the exception of the instantly selectable ones and button hole, each pattern is identified by a one or two digit number under Us picture on the panel. This number will he the key for entering the selection into the machine.

The main pattern selection controls consist of four arrowhead buttons (1,2,4,6) under the pattern selection indicator (3). Use these to enter the key number.

Pressing buttons (4) or (5), will change the right-hand digit of the display, increasing or decreasing the overall key number one unit at a time.

Pressing buttons (1) or (2) will change the left-hand key number, increasing the overall key number ten units at a time.

* To select a pattern, first choose the desired individual pattern, letter, or numeral to he sewn (6) on the display panel and note the key number under It (7).

♦ After turning machine power on, use buttons (1), (2), (4), and (5) to enter the key number into the machine.

♦ If pattern selected has a key number from 0 to 9, the left hand side of the pattern selection indicator must be reduced to zero at which time it will go dark.

* if desired, only buttons (4) and (5) may be used since holding in either button will let the machine count up or down between 0 and 99, Buttons (1) and (2) make selection quicker by increasing or decreasing the entry of the key in steps of 10 units at a time.

* When the key number appears or the selection indicator, the machine is ready to sew most selected patterns continuously as long as speed controller is depressed.

• When single letters or numbers are selected, the microcomputer only allows the pattern to be sewn once, then it automatically shuts off. These patterns must be used in conjunction with the memory functions, described later in this book, in order to be sewn more than once.

REMEMBER, when machine is first turned on, it will be ready to sew straight stitch and will show that pattern on the selection indicator, NOT a key number. Use of the arrowhead controls will Immediately change the display on the selection indicator to a key number. It is recommended to make a sample using the same fabric and interfacing before sewing on the garment.

Fine Tuning Patterns

Patterns are stored in the machine along with a pre programmed stitch width and length. Use of pattern as stored will

produce an acceptable stitch under most sewing conditions. However, there may be circumstances when modifications

might be advantageous. The fine tuning controls allow these changes.

Reverse Stitching

When sewing stretch stitch patterns or but-tonholes, it may occasionally be necessary to make an adjustment for proper stitch appearance.

Using the balance control (1) located on the right side of the machine:

* Turn dial counter-clockwise (2) to bring stitches of the pattern closer together.

• Turn dial clockwise (3) to separate stitches of the pattern.

The dial may be returned to a center position each time after sewing stretch stitch patterns or buttonholes.

Use of this control for buttonholes will be covered later in the section on buttonholing.

Left/Right Needle Position

This machine allows the operator to position the needle to

the left, center, or right for special straight sewing, such as

collars, from the extreme left position to the extreme right

position or anywhere in between. Do this as follows.

• With the machine set for straight stitching , and the

needle out of the fabric, press the stitch width fine tuning

button (1) once. The pattern selection indicator will show

pattern (2).

* By moving the width fine tuning control, the needle can

be positioned anywhere from the extreme left (3) to the

center position (4).

♦ Pressing the stitch width fine tuning button (1) again

allows the fine tuning control to position the needle from

the center position (4) to the extreme right (5).

REMEMBER: The micro computer memory retains

Information on the last function selected, Turn the

handwheel one revolution by hand, or with the speed

controller, for it to acknowledge the new command.

The machine memory can store up to a series of 30 patterns, which allows you either to

string a sequence of different patterns together or to write.

To use this button;

This button is used to recall patterns stored in memory. If you have decided to sew a

single sequence of stored stitch patterns, press the “MRC” button once. The red Ind icator

(A) will light. When the machine finishes to sew the string sequence, the slow blinking of

the red indicator will advise you to be at the end of the programmed string sequence and

a lettering space symbol will appear in the pattern display window. {III. B) The machine

will automatically stop. To restart machine, press “MRC*’ again to repeat the same

pattern or to select another pattern.

To set the machine for continuous sewing of a string sequence, push the “MRC” button

twice. The indicator light will begin blinking rapidly. The machine will repeat the pattern

string continuosly till it is switched off.

beginning of the sequence. The machine is now ready to sew.

Please note that by pressing the "MRC” button once, the machine will sew only one pattern sequence and will

automatically stop after this sequence is completed.

By pressing “MRC” twice, the machine will repeat the pattern string continuously.

To correct an error:

If a selection error is made, recall the wrong key number in

Press the “CLR" button once to delete the pattern. At this

time, the new key number of the pattern is selected and

entered into the sequence. Recall the memory (MRC).

To completely clear all patterns stored, press

stitch, zig-zag, blind stitch or buttonhole)

without clearing the memory.

4. SEWING TIPS AND APPLICATIONS

Fabric, Thread and Needle Table

Your fabric will deterrnino the choice of a needle and thread. The following table is a practical guide to

needle and thread selection. Always refer to it before a new sewing project. And be sure to use the same

size and type of thread in the bobbin as in the top thread supply.

Most fabrics can be placed tinder the foot by raising the presser

foot lifter (1) to its normal "up” position (2) where it locks in

place. When using bulky fabric, multiple fabric layers, or an

embroidery hoop, raise the lifter to the highrise position (3), thus

increasing the space between the foot and the needle plate.

* Lower presser foot lifter all the way down and the machine is

ready to sew.

Guiding Fabric

Most fabrics need only to be guided in front of

Machine Basting • Attach darning and embroidery foot (1) to machine by

following instructions for “Attaching Darning and

Embroidery Foot” in Chapter 2.

Blindstitching

Blind stitching provides a durable way to finish a hem and is

presented as an instantly selectable pattern as a

convenience, if takes practice, however, so a test sample is

suggested.

• Select blind stitch by pressing the appropriate instant

selection button.

• Prepare the hem by folding and pressing as usual. If the

hem is basted to hold it in place, as shown, be sure to

place the basting at least 1/2 Inch (1,2 cm) below the fop

edge of the hem allowance.

* With the wrong side of fabric up, turn the hem under

creating a soft fold from the top*edge of hem. Pin or baste

all three layers together.

♦ Attach blind stitch presser foot to machine as in Chapter

2.

* Position the hem under the presser foot with the soft fold

(1) resting against the wall of the foot (2), as shown.

* Adjust the foot by turning the small knob (3) to make sure

the straight stitches fall on the edge of the hem and the

zig-zag stitches just pierce the soft fold.

To achieve even stitching and close to the

zipper teeth, use the special zipper foot.

* When zipper teeth are to the left of the needle, slide the

adjusting block (1), which slides on the pin of the foot, all the

way to the right.

* Snap on foot with shank to the left side of pin. (See

“Changing Snap-on Presser Feet”)

* Hand-haste the zipper opening to the seam line (2), and

press open the seam allowance.

* Place open zipper face down on the seam allowance with

the teeth against the searn line.

* Stitch the zipper to the seam allowance from bottom to

top on one side.

Buttonholes

This machine makes buttonholes easily us* ing the microcomputer to

ensure accurate repeatability. Always use a sample of the same fabric

and interfacing to make a test buttonhole first before buttonholing on the

finished garment.

Attaching the Buttonhole Foot

• Raise the needle bar to Its highest position by turning the hand

wheel towards the operator.

• Raise the presser foot using presser foot lifter on rear of machine,

• Loosen (but do not remove) the presser foot screw (A), remove the

presser foot and shank attached, guiding it towards the operator and

to the right.

• Hook buttonhole foot (B) between loosened screw (A) and around

presser bar {Q.

• Tighten presser foot screw (A) with a thin coin.

Adjusting Stitch Balance

* Check buttonhole stlich balance before full programming, using the

same type of fabric and number of plies of the garment being sewn.

* With bl showing in window, start sewing the right hand side of the

buttonhole. When a length of about 1 inch (2.5 cm.) is reached, press

button (2) once to sew left hand side.

« Upon returning to start position, stop machine and press again button (3)

and complete the buttonhole,

* If stitches in right side of buttonhole are too far apart compared to left

side, turn balance control (A) in a clockwise direction.

* If stitches on right side are too close together relative to the left side,

turn balance control (A) in a counter*clockwise direction.

* Press b3 (CLR), repeat test and adjust until stitching on both sides is

equal.

If required, the stitch density can be adjusted by

activating the stitch length override button (5).

Adjust stitch length control (6) and retest until

desired appearance is achieved.

Programming Length

Also, if required, the width of the buttonhole can

be adjusted to sew wider or narrower

buttonholes to suit various sizes of buttons and

different weights of fabric.

To change the standard width press override

button (7), adjust override control (8) and retest

until desired appearance is achieved. This will

not affect the cutting space which will stay 1 mm

width as programmed buttonhole.

must be repeated.

♦ Press button (1) and start sewing. The machine will stop

automatically upon completion of the buttonhole.

the user may do so without disturbing the buttonhole In

memory. The programmed buttonhole may be reselected

at a later time by pushing button (1). The symbol (bh) will

indicate that there is a program In the memory.

Note: If stitch length and balance were used to program

the buttonhole, they must be reset to same position when

buttonhole is reselected after having performed other

stitching functions which required different stitch length or

balance setting. Relatively little movement of either of

these controls will cause enough stitch length change to

produce different length buttonholes and/or failure to close

properly.

The programmed buttonhole will remain stored in the memory

as long as the power remains on or until the user wishes to

erase it by using the buttonhole "CLR” button.

♦ The “CLR” function only works if machine is in the

buttonhole mode of operation.

Clearing Memory

To sew on buttons, first attach the button sewing foot (1) to the

machine by following instructions under “Replacing Screw-on

Presser Feet*' in Chapter 2.

Attach feed cover (2) on the machine also as indicated in

Chapter 2.

Select mymg stitch.

Press the stitch width fine tuning button (3).

With the garment in place urider the foot, place button under

the foot. Guide the needle into the lefthand hole and turn the

handwheel and make the first stitch. When the needle

comes out of the button, adjust the width fine tuning control

so needle will accurately enter the right hand hole.

The speed controller may then be depressed and the

machine allowed to take about six stitches.

Twin Needle Sewing

Twin needle sewing produces two parallel linos of closely-spaced, decorative stitching.

« With machine turned off, insert twin needle into needle clamp, and thread machine as for single-needle sewing and through right needle eye (1),

♦ Attach extra spool pin with felt washer (2), to bobbin winder spindle (3); place second spool of thread on it; and, again, thread machine as usual except omit

thread guide (4) immediately above needle. Pass second thread through eye of left hand needle.

♦ Activate stitch width fine tuning control by pressing (7) and set stitch width (5) control to desired width between straight stitch and the twin needle mark (6).

CAUTION: DO NOT sew with twin needle using patterns as selected directly from memory, and DO NOT use a stitch width greater t han that indicated by twin

needle mark on stitch width fine tuning control. Needle breakage will result. Rotate handwheel slowly by hand to visually check for adequate needle clearance

before pressing foot controller.

This machine is not supplied with the twin needle or extra spool pin and felt washer. These accessories are available from an approved dealer.

5. CLEANING YOUR MACHINE

To ensure reliability, regularly clean and lubricate machine. Periodic check-ups by an

authorized service center are recommended depending upon frequency of use.

Removing Face Plate

Cleaning the Machine

CAUTION: Before attempting any procedures in this chapter, disconnect

power lino plug from electrical outlet!

Only remove the face plate of the machine for cleaning, lubricating, and

light bulb replacement. Keep securely fastened at all other times.

* Loosen and remove screw (1),

* Remove face plate by drawing it slightly towards the operator and to

the left (2),

* Replace face plate by sliding it to the right under top edge of arm top

cover (3).

* When snugly seated, replace and tighten screw (1).

PRECAUCIÓN: Antes de intentar cualquier procedimiento de este

capítulo, desconecte el enchufe de alimentación de la toma eléctrica!

Sólo retire la placa frontal de la máquina para la limpieza, lubricación, y la

sustitución de la bombilla. Mantenga bien sujeta en cualquier otro

momento.

* Afloje y quite el tornillo (1),

* Retire la placa de cara dibujando ligeramente hacia el operador y hacia

la izquierda (2),

* Reemplace la placa frontal deslizándola hacia la derecha por debajo del

borde superior de la cubierta superior del brazo (3).

* Cuando esté sentado cómodamente, reemplazar y apretar el tornillo (1).

♦ For normal external cleaning, use a soft dry cloth.

Stubborn stains may be removed with a mild soap

and water solution,

♦ Using a soft brush, remove all lint from exposed

mechanical parts under face plate as well as thread

path and needle, feed, and bobbin areas.

♦ Periodically, apply a drop of oil to areas shown. DO

NOT over oil!

♦ Para la limpieza externa normal, utilice un paño suave y

seco. Las manchas difíciles pueden volver a moverse con

un jabón suave y solución de agua,

♦ El uso de un cepillo suave, quite toda la pelusa de las

* Remove needle and needle plate.

* Open slide plate and lift out bobbin.

* Using small screwdriver, turn bobbin ease retainer

(1) in direction of arrow (2) as far as it will go,

* Lift out bobbin case (3).

Using soft brush, brush lint from case and other

mechanical parts in the bobbin area.

* Retire la aguja y la placa de aguja.

under position plate (4)

♦ With small screwdriver, turn bobbin case retainer in direction

of arrow (5) to lock case in place.

♦ Reinsert needle, needle plate, and bobbin and close slide

plate.

Should slide plate become detached, replace as follows:

* Place slide plate in slide way with the front edge close to,

but not covering, the retaining spring (6).

* With a screwdriver, lift each end of spring into the side

grooves on the underside of the plate.

* Draw plate gently towards you to engage spring, Then,

close plate.

Removing Bobbin Case

* Remove face plate.

* DO NOT attempt to unscrew bulb.

* Press bulb into socket and turn in a counter-

clockwise direction to unlock pins.

This machine is designed to use a 15 watt

• Line up pins on bulb with slots in socket and

press upwards on bulb.

♦ Turn bulb in a clockwise direction to lock in

place.

* Replace face plate.

máximo de 15 vatios, bombilla bayoneta-base.

• Alinee patillas de la bombilla con las ranuras de

la toma de corriente y presione hacia arriba en el
