SWIMMING POOL MAINTENANCE

WITH IONISATION SYSTEM

HIDRION

Congratulations on your excellent choice!

This system is protected by an International Patent and is the final result of research

and development by a Portuguese engineering team.

Since the beginning of its distribution in 1997, more than 5,000 systems have been

installed.

By installing HIDRION in your swimming pool, you are keeping maintenance to a

minimum, and you can enjoy pure, crystal clear water, virtually free from hazardous

chemical products which can cause allergies and skin irritations.

You will only need to add a small quantity of oxidant on a weekly basis, usually chlorine

(further explained later), and check the pH and copper content from time to time, using

the testing kit supplied with your HIDRION system.

This is an “Environment Friendly System” because it produces a substantial reduction of

the amount of chemical products usually used and, as a result, it allows you to use the

water from the swimming pool to water your garden.

We are the Only Portuguese Manufacturer to produce this kind of system, which is a

guarantee of Excellent Technical Assistance for our customers (on-site assistance,

components kept in stock, fast deliveries, etc.).

1 – ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS

1.1 – HIDRION ELECTRICAL SWITCHBOARD

a) Screw the fixing brackets to the upper part of the HIDRION electrical

switchboard using the screws supplied and the pre-existing holes in the box.

b) Attach the HIDRION electrical switchboard to the wall, next to the pump

electrical switchboard, in a dry, easily-accessible place, preferably at eye level.

Use the supports and screws supplied to attach the switchboard to the wall as

shown:

Attaching the HIDRION electrical switchboard to the wall.

c) The HIDRION electrical switchboard power source comes through a cable

connected to the pump electrical switchboard, which uses a time-delay output

(phase and neutral) of 220V.

IMPORTANT: The HIDRION electrical switchboard should only receive electric

current when the pump is running.

Always check that this is the case, whether for automatic or manual operation.

1.2 – HIDRION IONISER

a) The HIDRION ioniser should be installed after the pump and before the filter,

replacing the first 90° in the piping after the pump output.

NB: The water flow should always be as indicated in this picture:

Note: In systems with a pump power greater than 1 hp, the ioniser source should be

installed in a bypass to the main piping (between the pump and the filter), so only some

of the flow passes through the ioniser, as shown:

Bypass assembly.

b) The HIDRION ioniser can be attached to PVC piping of ø 63mm (H100 and

H200 models) or ø 50mm (H50 model). If necessary, a 63-50 mm reducing

bush can be glued to the ioniser input and output.

8

NB: The ioniser unit is made of PVC, therefore a suitable glue for this type of material

should be used.

c) For H50 and H100 models, the ioniser power source max. 24 V / 0.6 A)

comes from the DC output (output for electrodes in the lower right-hand

corner) of the electrical switchboard and is connected to the ioniser source by

terminals.

For the H200 models, the ioniser power source (max. 24 V / 1 A) comes

from the DC output (output for electrodes in the lower right-hand corner) of

the electrical switchboard via a 2 x 0.75 mm cable also supplied. Remove the

plastic casing of the two wires at one end of the cable and insert them into the

DC output, securing them in place with the screws. On the other end of the

cable, attach the two female connectors supplied and connect them to the

male connectors on the ioniser. As the connectors are removable, they allow

the electrodes to be replaced more easily, when necessary (see Chapter 6.3 –

page 24).

2 - HOW IT WORKS

Through a process of electrolysis, an electric current releases metal ions, chosen for

their properties as a bactericide, fungicide and algaecide. The ions treat the swimming

pool water, disinfecting it and leaving it pure and healthy.

Releasing many ions at the same time has a considerable group effect i.e., working

together is more effective than each type of ion acting separately.

The quantities released of each ion type depend on their characteristics (electrovalence)

and on the composition of the alloy used for the electrodes.

When the specific alloy composition is known, it is possible to estimate the concentration

of the all the types of ion just by measuring the concentration of one type.

In order to control the operation of HIDRION, and for practical reasons, we decided to

control the amount of copper in the water, so that the metal ion (Cu ++) concentration

is kept between 0.3 and 0.5 mg/l (1 mg/l = 1 ppm – parts per million).

This procedure keeps to a minimum the need for chemical products to treat the pool

water, such as flocculants and algaecides, and also drastically reduces oxidant

consumption (e.g. chlorine or bromine) to 5-10% of the quantity used normally.

HIDRION's operation is extremely flexible and can generally be adapted to the

pump/filter system already in use.

HIDRION is installed in the piping system, between the pump and the filter, and runs

automatically and at the same time as the pump.

3 –START-UP PHASE

During the start-up phase, there are no copper ions in the water, so HIDRION should be

run to introduce the first copper ions into the water automatically, regulated by the

ionisation system. The table below shows the running times needed for HIDRION to

obtain the recommended copper concentration in the water, depending on both

swimming pool volume and the intensity of the regulated current:

This total number of hours can be reached either by running the pump and filter

continuously, or by using the usual daily filtration hours – in this case, naturally, the

start-up phase will be longer (see Chapter 6.1 – page 23).

Either way, traditional water treatment of the swimming pool should be

continued until the end of the start-up phase.

Important Note:

To keep the swimming pool water in its best conditions and ensure optimum running of

the HIDRION system, water pH should be kept between 7.0 and 7.4 (see Chapter 4.3.1

– page 15).

As soon as the water copper concentration reaches 0.3 – 0.5 mg/l, the maintenance

routine begins (see Chapter 5 - page 19).

4 – WATER CHEMISTRY – Parameters to control

Whichever treatment system you choose, it is fundamental to control some chemical

parameters of the swimming pool water so the water is balanced. This will prevent

chemical disorders and will help you with pool maintenance, as well as contributing to its

users' good health and protecting pool equipment.

4.1 – pH

pH shows if the water is acid, neutral or base. It is a measure of intensity and

monitoring it is crucial to keeping swimming pool water balanced, whatever the kind of

treatment you choose.

Page 12: Manual of Procedures - V20120924 - EN_REV

12

The use of HIDRION itself does not affect the pH of your pool water, but controlling it is

crucial to maintaining water quality.

What is the effect of low pH?

Irritation of the skin and mucus membranes (e.g. eyes, nose and ears).

Corrosion of pool equipment and accessories.

What is the effect of high pH?

Limescale on pool equipment and walls.

Lower copper and oxidant efficiency.

Formation of sand blocks in the filter, meaning the filter sand no longer

filters water properly and needs to be replaced.

The optimum pH value for swimming pool water is 7.0 – 7.4 and it should be checked on

a weekly basis:

- If it is higher (> 7.4), add a “pH–” product (acid).

- If it is lower (< 7.0), add a “pH+” product (base).

The amounts needed will depend on the difference between the intended pH and the

actual pH, and on the swimming pool volume and water characteristics. Swimming pools

are all different, so we suggest that, the first time, you use a small quantity of the

product (0.5 to 1kg of product, if solid, or 0.5 to 1 litre, if liquid). You can pour it into

the swimming pool water by dissolving it first in some water and then spreading it over

the surface of the pool, leaving the pump running for a few hours.

After each addition of “pH +” or “pH –" product, you should wait about 12 hours before

running the test again.

Your swimming pool water pH should remain between 7.0 and 7.4.

However, the pH correction must be done after the correction of the alkalinity.

4.2 – ALKALINITY

Alkalinity is a measure of a solution's ability to neutralise acids without greatly

disturbing the biological activities that occur within it. It is a measure of the water's

ability to resist pH deviations. It is a measure of capacity rather than intensity (like pH),

which is why a pH neutral solution can still have significant alkalinity.

Alkalinity is mainly due to the presence of carbonates and bicarbonates in the water, but

it is also caused by hydroxides, silicates, borates, phosphates and ammonia. Total

alkalinity is the sum of the alkalinity produced by all these ions.

In balanced water, alkalinity shall be between 80 and 120 ppm.

Under 80 ppm, the water has little ability to maintain the pH level, which means the pH

will suffer big deviations when even small amounts of “pH+” or “pH-” products are used.

The water will become corrosive and will damage pool equipment and accessories. This

water can be clear or green and swimmers may feel eye or skin irritation.

Alkalinity above 120 ppm means the water pH is very stable, and you need large

amounts of acid or base to correct the pH. Lime scale may appear and damage the

equipment and accessories.

We advise you to measure water alkalinity once a month.

- Correction of a low total alkalinity (under 80 ppm):

To raise alkalinity, use a “pH+” product (e.g. sodium bicarbonate). Spread the pre-

dissolved product uniformly over the surface of the water, paying attention to the

product instructions. If the product does not have any specific instructions, you may

follow this procedure:

Note: The correction must be done raising 10 ppm at a time, giving the

water some time to reach the equilibrium.

- Correction of a high total alkalinity (above 120 ppm):

To lower alkalinity, use a “pH-” product (e.g. hydrochloric acid or sulphuric acid). Pour

the product into the deepest part of the pool paying attention to the product

instructions. If the product does not have any specific instructions, you may follow this

procedure:

Keep your total water alkalinity between 80 and 120 ppm.

4.3 – COPPER

Copper is the main element to control in order to check that HIDRION is working

properly (copper ion concentration).

Page 15: Manual of Procedures - V20120924 - EN_REV

PRODUCED BY HIDROSWIM – HIDRION ÁGUA

15

Free copper concentration should be between 0.3 and 0.5 ppm to guarantee efficient

water treatment, reducing oxidant usage to an absolute minimum. Less than 0.3 ppm

can make treatment less effective, and a concentration above 0.5 ppm may make the

copper precipitate – copper stains may appear on the pool walls, although they can be

removed using a weak acid.

4.3.1 – Copper and pH

pH influences the presence of free, complex and solid copper in the water. Free copper is

soluble and is the most common form at a low pH. As the pH rises, free copper is

reduced and complex copper rises. Although complex copper is soluble, it is less able to

treat water because the copper is bonded to other ions. Therefore, a higher pH may lead

to less efficient water treatment.

Keep free copper at 0.3 – 0.5 ppm and pH at 7.0 – 7.4.

4.3.2 – Copper testing kit

A copper testing kit is supplied with your HIDRION system, so you can measure the

concentration of free copper in the water.

Free Copper Test:

1. Place a sample of swimming pool water in the container - test tube supplied - and

adjust the volume to the horizontal line (10 ml).

2. Add 5 drops of the A reagent.

3. Cover the test tube and turn it upside down to mix the reagent with the water.

4. Withdraw the top of the test tube and add 5 drops of the B reagent.

5. Put the top on again and turn the test tube upside down to mix B reagent with the

mixture.

6. Insert the test tube into the kit vertically and wait for 3 minutes, while it reacts

and the colour changes.

7. Remove the top of the test tube and place the test tube about 1.5 cm above the

colour chart (supplied with the kit) as shown in the photograph.

8. Compare the colour of the mixture with the colour chart.

Free copper concentration should be between 0.3 and 0.5 mg/l.

If the colour of the mixture is dark blue, this means the water has excessive copper, and

the current intensity should be reduced (by regulating the dial – potentiometer – on the

HIDRION switchboard).

Page 17: Manual of Procedures - V20120924 - EN_REV

(V20122924) WWW.HIDRION.EU

17

If the colour of the mixture is pale blue, this means that water does not have enough

copper, and the current intensity should be increased (by regulating the dial –

potentiometer – on the HIDRION switchboard).

Usually, changes in intensity should be made gradually, changing 1 level (LED) at a

time.

By adjusting the dial on the electrical switchboard, we are trying to guarantee that the

swimming pool water has a copper concentration between 0.3 and 0.5 mg/l.

4.4 - CHLORINE

As we have already mentioned, HIDRION will drastically reduce the usual consumption

of chlorine (by around 90-95%). The amount of chlorine used is minimal and it is less

than the amount of chlorine found in drinking water.

We recommend you to use slow dissolving tri-chlorine in grains or in 200 g tablets.

For regular usage, the necessary tri-chlorine amount (amount in grams) to be used per

week is calculated by multiplying the pool volume (m³) by a factor of:

1.4 in summer

0.7 in winter

Example: A 60 m³ swimming pool.

60 x 1.4 = 84 g / week (summer)

60 x 0.7 = 42 g / week (winter)

Note: These amounts are so small that they are not detected in usual testing, nor are

they noticed by pool users.

18

4.5 – CYANURIC ACID

Cyanuric acid is a chlorine stabilizer with a pH of 4.0. Swimming pool water that has

been treated with stabilised chlorine for a long time is more likely to contain

highercyanuric acid concentrations, accumulated ion over the years. However, both for

water treatment and for health reasons, cyanuric acid concentration should not be

higher than 75 mg/l.

At high concentrations, cyanuric acid reduces the chlorine's efficiency as a disinfectant,

making higher concentrations of chlorine necessary to achieve the same treatment

results, at the same time reducing the efficiency of copper treatment.

As there is no way of removing cyanuric acid from the water, the only way to eliminate

it is by replacing some of the water. A concentration higher than 75 mg/l can cause eye

irritation and corrosion of the pool equipment.

We recommend that you test your water's cyanuric acid concentration three times a

year.

Cyanuric acid concentration should be less than 75 mg/l.

5 – MAINTENANCE ROUTINE

Once the maintenance routine stage is reached, chlorine concentration (or other

disinfectant in use) can be reduced to 5-10% of the product manufacturer's

recommended dose (see Chapter 4.4 – page 17).

At the end of the start-up phase, the pool water copper content should be

between 0.3 and 0.5 ppm.

The HIDRION control panel shows either a graph or table which allows the user to

estimate ioniser current intensity for the H50 model, H100 model or to H200 model,

depending on the swimming pool volume and pump routine.

swimming pool users, water temperature and water quality, level of atmospheric

pollution, water renovation, etc.

As a guide, to guarantee efficient filtering of the swimming pool water, during the

warmest months and during the highest usage period, all the water should be filtered

twice a day. During periods with less usage (and colder water), the circulation time can

be half of the circulation time in warmer months.

You also need to check the sand in the filter and carry out backwash so the sand will last

longer and the filtering process will be more efficient.

The copper test should be done every 2 weeks, until copper levels stabilise (0.3 to

0.5ppm).

Once this value is stabilised and is within the defined limits, the copper test needs to be

carried out only once a week (using the testing kit supplied with HIDRION – see Chapter

4.3.2, page 16).

When the pool reaches the maintenance routine stage with HIDRION, as described

above, the current intensity levels of the display LEDs on the switchboard need only to

be checked occasionally, correcting any deviations as necessary (for further information

on the maintenance routine, see 6.2 and 6.3 – pages 23 and 24).

Note: HIDRION automatically alternates the polarity of the electrodes periodically

(every 7.5-30 minutes), which makes their usage more even. The alternating polarity

can be observed on the switchboard lights.

There is also an automatic mechanism built into the system which warns the user when

the electrode kit needs to be replaced or, in exceptional circumstances, to be cleaned.

This warning is given by a light located on the switchboard, next to the electric current

intensity LEDs:

6 – USEFUL TIPS

6.1 – WATER CONDUCTIVITY

During the start-up phase or after the pool water has been replaced, you may turn the

potentiometer and notice that the lights indicating the level of current intensity do not

come on. This means the water used to refill the pool has only small amounts of

minerals. HIDRION needs a certain amount of minerals to provide the current intensity

necessary for ionisation to occur. Adding some salt to the water (begin by adding 1kg of

salt for each 10 m3 of water) and waiting for it to dissolve is an easy way to guarantee

the amount of minerals needed for ionisation. Afterwards, move the potentiometer (dial)

on the HIDRION switchboard to the desired intensity. Add more salt if necessary.

6.2 – CLEANING ELECTRODES

During the lifetime of the HIDRION electrodes, you may find that you turn the

potentiometer and yet cannot correct the intensity of copper production. If the water is

hard and the pH is high, the electrodes may become insulated, and no copper is

produced (when you turn the potentiometer, the lights on the switchboard do not turn

on). Check the electrodes through the transparent PVC container. If they appear to have

a white coating, they have become insulated. Turn the device off on the switchboard,

stop the pool water circulation, remove the top of the HIDRION electrode container and

remove the electrode kit. In a bucket, dissolve some acid in water (always pour the acid

into the water and never the other way around!) and put the electrodes into the

solution. Wait and until you see that the electrodes lose the white coating and become

cleaner. Put the electrode kit back into the HIDRION jar and close it with the PVC lid.

You should then be able to regulate copper production on the HIDRION switchboard

(when turning the potentiometer, the lights come on).

6.3 – REPLACING ELECTRODES

If you need another HIDRION electrode kit, please contact us directly or buy it from your

usual. Please visit our website for information on replacing the electrode kit.
