Thank you, and congratulations on your choice of the Roland PC-300.

The PC-300 is an easy-to-operate, dedicated keyboard controller for GS compatible soundmodules fitted with a USB connector. This connection offers the advantage that the PC-300can also be powered via USB, while ensuring compatibility with the new connection stan-dard for both IBM PC compatible and Macintosh computers.

Please take the time to read through this Owners Manual. That way you can feel assuredthat you understand every feature the unit offers, and will enjoy many years of trouble-freeoperation.

The Roland PC-300 is a MIDI keyboardcontroller designed to provide for the con-venient transmission of Program Changeand Bank Select messages, as well as a vari-ety of other MIDI messages (such asReverb and Chorus information) to anexternal sound module. It contains nointernal sound source. It is particularlysuited for controlling sound modules thatcomply with the GS Format. (Called sim-ply GS sound modules in the following.)

What is the GS Format (g)?The GS Format is a standardized set ofspecifications for Rolands sound sourceswhich defines the manner in which multi-timbral sound generating units willrespond to MIDI messages. All devicescompatible with the GS Format bear theGS logo. Every module or device with theGS logo will respond in the same way tothe MIDI messages sent from the PC-300.

Note: All Roland GS sound modules also fullysupport Level 1 of the General MIDI System(m).

In 1990, the MIDI standard incorporatedthe Program Change/Bank Select messagecluster (selection of sounds using bothprogram numbers and control changenumbers CC00 and CC32). The GSFormat accommodates this form of soundselection, which allows for a much largernumber of sounds to be selected.

About the sounds contained in a GSsound moduleA GS sound module contains 128 basicsounds (Capital Tones) and a number ofVariation Tones. The mapping for theCapital Tones is compatible with Level 1 ofthe General MIDI System. Capital Tonesare stored in bank 0, while the Variationsare stored in banks 1 through 127. Thenumber of available Variation Tonesdepends on the sound module you areusing. Please see the manual of the soundmodule(s) your are using to find out howmay sounds there are and how to accessthem.

About the Drum Sets Provided by a GSSound ModuleThe MIDI channel used for the RhythmSet/Drum Set/Drum Part of a GM/GSmodule (MIDI channel 10) provides forthe use of several Variation Sets in addi-tion to the basic Drum Set (Standard Set:program change number PC01). Thoughmost Drum Sets can be selected using pro-gram change messages, the module yourare using may also contain a number ofVariation Sets. Please see its manual fordetails.

Note: If a Variation Tone or Variation DrumSet you have requested is not available in theGS module you are using, the module may notsound at all, or use a Drum Set with differentsounds.

USB connectorThe PC-300 comes with a USB connectorthat allows you to connect it to an IBMcompatible PC or a Macintosh computerfitted with USB connectors (iMac, G4,etc.). This connector allows for high-speeddata transfer and supplying power to theconnected devices.

USB drivers The PC-300 is supplied with various USBdrivers for both IBM compatible andMacintosh computers. See the includedbooklet for details.

Superb playability and expres-siveness

This standard 49-key keyboard velocitysensitive and therefore allows you toexpress even the finest nuances. In addi-tion, an Octave Shift feature allows you toconveniently shift the soundable range upor down. Moreover, the PC-300 isequipped with a Pitch Bend/Modulationlever, and provides a SUSTAIN SWITCHjack for connecting a Sustain/Hold pedal.

Complete range of controlfeatures

Since the keyboard provides for soundselection that uses combinations ofProgram Change and Bank Select mes-sages (CC 00 and CC 32), you can alsoselect any of the Variation Tones that maybe available on a GS sound module.

In addition, a variety of continuous con-trollers (Control Changes) can be assignedto the DATA ENTRY slider. The slider canthen be used for controlling the desiredparameter (Reverb or Chorus Depth, forexample) of a GS sound module.

Makes Desk Top Music (DTM)more enjoyable

The PC-300 is very compact, so it requiresonly a minimal amount of desktop space.The PC-300 is sure to become an invalu-able part of any DTM setup, since it canbe used for real-time or step recording, aswell as for practice while listening tominus-one playback.

Be sure to only use the supplied RolandACA series adapter. Use of any other ACadapter could result in damage, malfunc-tion or electric shock.

Power supply Before connecting this unit to other devices,

turn off the power to all units; this will helpprevent damage or malfunction.

Be sure to set the POWER switch on the rearpanel according to the power source you areusing (adapter or USB).

Do not use this unit on the same power circuitwith any device that will generate line noise,such as an electric motor or variable lightingsystem.

The power requirement for this unit is indicatednext to the DC IN connector (rear panel) aswell as on the adapters nameplate. Be sure thatthe outlet you choose meets this requirement.

Avoid damaging the adapters power cord: donot step on it, place heavy objects on it, etc.

When disconnecting the AC adapter from thepower outlet, grasp the plug itself; never pull onthe cord.

If the unit is to remain unused for an extendedperiod of time, unplug the adapter.

Placement Do not subject the unit to temperature

extremes (e.g., direct sunlight in an enclosedvehicle). Avoid using or storing the unit industy or humid areas, or areas that are subjectto high levels of vibration.

Using the unit near power amplifiers (or otherequipment containing large power transform-ers) may induce hum.

This device may interfere with radio and televi-sion reception. Do not use it in the vicinity ofsuch receivers.

Maintenance For everyday cleaning wipe the unit with a soft,

dry cloth or one that has been slightly damp-ened with water. To remove stubborn dirt, use amild, non-abrasive detergent. Afterwards, besure to wipe the unit thoroughly with a soft, drycloth.

Never use benzene, thinners, alcohol or solventsof any kind, to avoid the possibility of discol-oration and/or deformation.

Additional precautions Protect the unit from strong impact.

Do not allow objects or liquids of any kind topenetrate the unit. In the event of such anoccurrence, discontinue use immediately.Contact qualified service personnel as soon aspossible.

A small amount of heat will radiate from theunit during normal operation.

Before using the unit in a foreign country, con-sult with qualified service personnel.

Should the unit malfunction, or if you suspectthere is a problem, discontinue use immediately.Contact qualified service personnel as soon aspossible.

To avoid the risk of electric shock, do not openthe unit.

The PC-300 can be powered using thesupplied adapter, or via a USB connectionwith your computer.

Power supply

Using the USB power supply1. Connect the PC-300s USB port to afree USB port of your PC (see page 10).This requires the use of the supplied USBcable.

2. Switch on your computer.

Using the supplied adapterNote: Be sure to use only the specified ACadapter (ACA series). Using any other typemay cause malfunction or electric shock.

Note: If the unit is to remain unused for anextended period of time, unplug the powercord.

Setting up the PC-300The PC-300 is a MIDI controller. It contains no sound-generating circuitry of its own, butit can effectively control external units (sound module, computer, etc.) by transmitting awide variety of MIDI messages.

To ensure maximum benefit from your system, be sure to read this manual and the manu-als for the external equipment you are using.

Controlling other MIDI devices1. Connect the PC-300s MIDI OUT port to the MIDI IN connector on the sound moduleyou wish to control.

2. Set the PC-300s KEYBOARD/PC switch to KEYBOARD.

Desk Top Music setupWhen connecting your computer with a sound module via a serial connection, use only aserial cable which is designed for the model of computer you are using and its particularkind of connector.

If the sound module has a COMPUTER/TO HOST switch, be sure to set it to the appropri-ate position. This will vary depending on the type of computer, the way you are connectingit, and the requirements of the software you are using.

Computer connected via the USB port1. Connect the PC-300s USB port to a free USB port on your computer.

2. Set the PC-300s KEYBOARD/PC switch to PC.

Powering up1. Power to the various devices should be turned on in the appropriate order: First, switch on the units from which MIDI messages will originate (here, the PC-300).

The PC-300s POWER indicator lights.Note: If the PC-300 is powered using the ACA series adapter, set the POWER switch to the ON(DC IN) position. If it is connected to a USB port, set the POWER switch to the ON (USB)position. In that case, there is no need for the adapter.

Next, switch on the sound module, then the audio reproduction equipment.

2. Power off your system in the reverse order.Note: This unit is equipped with a circuitry protection feature. A brief interval after power up isrequired before the unit will operate normally.

Setting the MIDI transmitchannel

To control the sound module, set thePC-300s MIDI channel to the same chan-nel on which the module is receiving. Ifthe sound module is multitimbral, set thechannel on the PC-300 so it matches theMIDI channel of the modules Part thatyou wish to control.

[Procedure]1. Press MIDI/SELECT [3] (the LED willlight).

2. Select the MIDI channel by pressingone of the MIDI CHANNELS keys [6].

3. Press MIDI/SELECT [3] again (the LEDwill go out).

Selecting soundsProgram Change/Bank Select messages areused for changing Tones for an instrumentPart, and for changing Drum Sets for theDrum Part (MIDI channel 10).

Changing sounds in a GS sound moduleTo change Tones in a GS module, youneed to send Bank Select messages usingcontrol changes CC00 (called H here)and CC32 (called L), followed by thedesired Program Number (PC).

The desired sound bank needs to be speci-fied using both an H and an L value.Be aware that only sending these two mes-sages is not enough for selecting anothersound. You also need to transmit aProgram Change number.

On the PC-300, these three messages arealways sent as one set:

Value of control change CC00 (H); Value of control change CC32 (L); Program Number.

Note: You can refer to the GS/GM soundgroup list printed on the upper-right part ofthe PC-300s panel when specifying a ProgramNumber. See also the manual of the moduleyour are using.

[Procedure]1. Set the MIDI transmit channel tomatch that of the Part or module youwish to control.See Setting the MIDI transmit channel.

2. Press MIDI/SELECT [3] (the LED willlight).

3. Press the black G#4 key (H) [9].4. Set the H value (CC00) by pressingthe appropriate keys in the NUMERICENTRY section [12].For single-digit program numbers (1~9),pressing the corresponding key is enough.

Selecting Drum Sets on a GSsound module

The Drum Part (MIDI channel 10) of aGS module does not respond to BankSelect messages. However, if you try tosend only a Program Change messagefrom the PC-300, a Bank Select messagewill end up being transmitted along withit anyway because the data for the lastsound specified will have been retained inmemory. For this reason, you shouldalways send the value 0 for H and L,

followed by the Program Number in orderto make sure you obtain the Drum Set youneed.

Note: L corresponds to CC32. This BankSelect message is sometimes used for selectingother sound module modes. If so, several Lvalues are supported. See the modules manualfor details.

[Procedure]1. Set the MIDI transmit channel to 10.See page 11.

Temporarily changing the pitchof a note (Pitch Bend)

Move the BENDER/MODULATION lever[1] left or right to transmit Pitch Bendmessages, and apply subtle pitch changesto the notes you are playing.

Note: The Pitch Bend range (amount of pitchchange) varies depending on the setting of thePart or module being controlled.

Adding vibrato (Modulation)Moving the BENDER/MODULATIONlever [1] forward (away from you) willtransmit Modulation messages (CC01),changing the sound in real time (usuallyby adding a vibrato effect).

Note: The change obtained with this messagewill vary depending on the settings for yoursound module. In some cases, the filter or vol-ume will be modulated, producing a WahWahor tremolo effect.

Holding the notes your play(Sustain)

Connect an optional DP-2, DP-6 or BOSSFS-5U footswitch to the SUSTAINSWITCH jack. Press it while playing oneor several notes to send Hold 1 messages(CC64), causing the notes to be sustained.If an electric organ or another sustainedsound is used, the notes will continue foras long as you have the pedal down.

Pressing the pedal will transmit an ONvalue (127), while releasing it will transmitan OFF value (0).

Note: The CC 64 (Hold 1) function can beassigned to the DATA ENTRY slider, allowingyou to obtain the damper effect by moving theslider.

Using the OCTAVE [5] buttons ([+],[]), the soundable range of the key-board can be shifted up or down,allowing you to access notes that liebeyond the range covered by thePC-300s 49 keys.

Selecting a higher octave: OCTAVE[+]Press [+] once to raise the note num-bers transmitted by the keyboard byone octave. Repeat this to shift thekeyboard two octaves higher. Bypressing this button four times, youcan raise the keyboards pitch by 4octaves.

Note: When shifting the keyboard 4octaves up, the gray keys do nottransmit notes messages.

Selecting a lower octave: OCTAVE[]Press [] once to lower the note num-bers transmitted by the keyboard byone octave. As you can see, this willshift the C2 one octave to the right,while the C6 is no longer available.Repeat this procedure to lower thepitch by up to 3 octaves.

Returning to the normal soundrange: STANDARDPress [+] and [] simultaneously.

9. Controlling a sound module with the DATAENTRY slider

The following functions can be assigned to the DATA ENTRY slider:

Note: In some cases, moving the slider onlyslightly may not produce any noticeablechange. If this happens, move the slider upand down once, then set the value.

Altering the timbre (ChannelAftertouch)

The PC-300s keyboard does not transmitChannel Aftertouch messages. You can,however, achieve a similar result by assign-ing Channel Aftertouch to the DATAENTRY slider and moving it up and down

to obtain the desired effect.

Channel Aftertouch is a function that letsyou alter notes (that have already beenplayed) by applying additional pressure onthe keys.

1. Set the MIDI transmit channel tomatch that of the Part or module youwish to control.See Setting the MIDI transmit channelon page 11.

Channel Aftertouch Alters the notes currently being played (volume, pitch, filter)

Velocity Changes the dynamics (timbre, volume)

Reverb Level (CC 91) Sets the depth of the Reverb effect

Chorus Level (CC 93) Sets the depth of the Chorus effect

Panpot (CC 10) Sets the sound position (localization in the stereo sound field)

Volume (CC 07) Sets the volume level of the Part

3. Press the white F3 key (AFTERTOUCH) in the DATA ENTRY ASSIGN-MENT section [7].

4. Press MIDI/SELECT [3] again (the LEDwill go out).Now, when you move the DATA ENTRYslider, Channel Aftertouch messages (witha value reflecting the sliders position) willbe transmitted.

Note: A GS sound module only responds toAftertouch messages if you change its defaultsetting. Computer users should consult theowners manual of their software, since it maybe possible to assign Channel Aftertouch to thedesired function (volume, pitch, filter) fromwithin the software.

Changing the velocitysensitivity

Whenever a key is pressed, the PC-300 notonly transmits the corresponding notenumber but also a value describing howhard you pressed the key. The VELOCITYfunction allows you to set the range oftransmitted velocity messages.



3. Press the black F#3 key (VELOCITY).4. Press MIDI/SELECT [3] again (the LEDwill go out).Move the DATA ENTRY slider to select thevelocity sensitivity value. With the slider atits maximum, velocity values within theentire 1~127 range can be transmitted.

Reverb levelThis function allows you to set the Reverbdepth for the Part or module you are con-trolling, and thus to specify how muchReverb will be added to the Parts sound.



3. Press the black G#3 key (REVERBLEVEL).

4. Press MIDI/SELECT [3] again (the LEDwill go out).Now you can use the DATA ENTRY sliderto set the Reverb Send Level (Effect 1Depth, CC91) of the receiving Part ormodule.

Note: On a sound module other than a GS orGeneral MIDI module, the relevant parametermay not correctly respond to CC91 messages.

Chorus levelThis function allows you to set the Chorusdepth for the Part or module you are con-trolling.

Setting the sound location:Panpot

When the module is connected in stereo,this parameter determines the stereoplacement (L/R) of the individual soundsproduced. For the Drum Part (MIDIchannel 10), it shifts the overall stereoplacement of percussive instruments (theoverall orientation of the Drum Part on aGS module).



3. Press the black C#4 key (PANPOT) inthe DATA ENTRY ASSIGNMENT section[7].

Press MIDI/SELECT [3] again (the LEDwill go out).Now you can use the DATA ENTRY sliderto set the Panpot value to be transmitted.With the slider at the center, the soundwill be oriented in the center. When pulledall the way forward, the sound will beheard from the extreme right. Whenpushed completely back, the sound willcome from the left.

Note: The Panpot settings work just the otherway around on modules such as the RolandMT-32, TD-8, and certain others.

Changing the volumeThis function allows you to adjust the vol-ume level for the Part you are controlling.

If notes are stuck: PanicThe PC-300 also features a PANIC func-tion that allows you to transmit a series ofMIDI messages that will silence the receiv-ing instruments in case some notes go onsounding forever:


2. Simultaneously press the white B4 andC5 keys (PANIC) [11].This will cause the PC-300 to transmit so-called Reset data:

Assigning other control changes to the DATA ENTRY slider

The above messages (Panpot, Volume, etc.) are the basic control change numbers almostany module receives. There may, however, be other parameters you wish to control in real-time. To do so, assign the control change number of the desired parameter to the DATAENTRY slider, and do your thing.

Any controller between CC00 and CC127 can be assigned. Since the PC-300 isnt equippedwith a display that allows you to monitor the data being transmitted, it is probably notsuited for Registered or Non-Registered Parameter Numbers (RPN or NRPN). Also notethat CC00 and CC32 are usually used as Bank Select messages and that sending a value forthese controllers without a subsequent Program Change number may have no effect at all.

10. TroubleshootingQ: The PC-300 cannot be switched on or

doesnt work at all.A: Check if you are using the correct AC

adapter. (Use only the specified adapter).

A: Check the setting of the POWER switch:set it to ON (DC IN) if you are usingthe supplied adapter, and to ON (USB)when powering the PC-300 via the USBconnector. Do not forget to establish aUSB connection with your computer.

Q: The sound module does not respond to themovements of the DATA ENTRY slider.

A: Check whether the correct function isassigned to the DATA ENTRY slider.Also, note that the module will some-times not respond if the slider is movedonly slightly. If you are unsure, pull theslider all the way down first and then setit to the desired position.

A: Check the PC-300s MIDI transmitchannel (see page 11) and set it so that itcorresponds to the Parts or modulesreceive channel.

Q: The sound you have requested cannot beselected.

A: Some GS modules, such as those in theSound Canvas series, have a switchwhich allows you to turn on or off thereception of Program Change messagesand/or Bank Select messages. Be sure thisswitch is turned ON.

A: Could the sound module have received aGM System On message (the messagethat tells a module to function as aGeneral MIDI sound module) beforeyou sent Bank Select messages? SinceBank Selects are not recognized by theGeneral MIDI System Level 1 specifica-tions, the module will ignore them if it iscurrently behaving as a General MIDIdevice. To correct this situation, send aGS Reset message (which retrieves theGS default settings), or simply switch themodule off, then on again.

Note: The PC-300 cannot transmit GS Resetmessages.

A: Did you transmit the complete sequenceof values (H, L and ProgramNumber)? The PC-300 always transmitsCC00/CC32/PC clusters, even if only the

Program Number has been specified.Note also that the Bank Select values arememorized until the next sound hasbeen successfully selected. So, if even oneout of the complete set of three values ismistakenly not supplied, part of the pre-vious values could be sent along with thenewly specified ones. As a result, youmight not obtain the sound you need.

A: Does your computer music applicationuse Program Numbers 0~127 for soundselection? Since the PC-300 uses num-bers 1~128, you may need to add one tothe number being selected to obtain thecorrect sound.

Q: The GS module does not respond toAftertouch messages.

A: By default, a GS sound module does notrespond to Aftertouch messages.Therefore, you need to set the Aftertouchparameters using Exclusive messages.(Refer to the MIDI Implementation forthe sound module in question.) If usinga computer-based system, you may beable to easily make the required settingsusing the software.

Bedienungsanleitung

Das PC-300 MIDI-Keyboard von Rolandist ein Controller, mit welchem Bank- undProgrammwechselbefehle sowie eine ganzeReihe anderer MIDI-Befehle (darunterReverb- und Chorus-Meldungen) zuexternen Modulen bertragen werdenknnen. Es enthlt keine interneKlangerzeugung, eignet sich aber zumSteuern von Modulen, die das GS-Formatuntersttzen. (Im weiteren Verlauf wollenwir dieses schlicht GS-Module nennen.)

Was ist das GS-Format (g)?Das GS-Format stellt eine Ergnzung zurMIDI-Norm dar, die Roland fr einigeseiner Module entwickelt hat. Das GS-Format bezieht sich auf die Art, wieelektronische Instrumente dieempfangenen MIDI-Befehle auswerten.Alle zum GS-Format kompatiblenInstrumente fhren das GS-Logo undhaben den Vorteil, dass sie sich beiEmpfang der vom PC-300 gesendetenMIDI-Daten gleich verhalten.

Anmerkung: Alle GS-Module von Roland sindauerdem hundertprozentig General MIDILevel 1-kompatibel (m).

1990 wurde die MIDI-Norm dahingehenderweitert, dass neben Klangspeichern auchKlangbnke angewhlt werden knnen(die Bankanwahl erfolgt mit denSteuerbefehlen CC00 und CC32, whrenddie Klanganwahl weiterhin von denProgrammwechsel-Befehlen geregeltwird). Das GS-Format untersttzt diesesvielseitigere System.

Klangspeicherstruktur eines GS-ModulsEin GS-Modul bietet 128 Basisklnge (dieCapitals) sowie eine Reihe vonKlangvariationen. Die Zuordnung derBasisklnge zu den Programmnummernentspricht dem General MIDI-System(Level 1). Die Capitals befinden sich inBank 0, whrend sich die Variationen inden Bnken 1~127 befinden. WelcheVariationen genau belegt sind, richtet sichnach dem jeweiligen Modell. Am bestenlegen Sie die Bedienungsanleitung desverwendeten Moduls in Griffweite.

Die Drum Sets eines GS-ModulsMIDI-Kanal 10 (der Schlagzeugkanal)bietet neben dem am hufigstenverwendeten Standard Set(Programmnummer PC01) mehrereSchlagzeugvariationen. Auch die DrumSets (Schlagzeugklnge) kann man mitProgrammwechseln aufrufen. Da sich dasDrum Set-Angebot ebenfalls nach demverwendeten Modul richtet, schauen Siebitte in der Bedienungsanleitung IhresInstrumentes nach, welche Drum Setsbelegt sind.

Anmerkung: In bestimmten Fllen ist derverlangte Variationsklang bzw. das VariationDrum Set auf dem Empfnger nicht belegt. Jenach dem verwendeten Empfngermodulwerden die Noten dann entweder berhauptnicht oder nicht mit dem gewnschten Klang(den gewnschten Schlagzeugklngen)gespielt.

USB-AnschlussDas PC-300 ist mit einer USB-Buchseausgestattet und kann also direkt miteinem IBM-kompatiblen PC oderMacintosh-Computer (iMac, G4 usw.)verbunden werden. USB erlaubt nicht nureinen schnellen Datentransfer, sondernauch die Stromversorgung derangeschlossenen Gerte.

Ausgesprochen musikalischDank des anschlagdynamischen 49-Tastenmanuals knnen Sie mit demPC-300 ausdrucksstark musizieren.Auerdem bietet das PC-300 eineOktavierungsfunktion, mit der man denNotenbereich nach links oder rechtsverschieben kann. Schlielich sind auchein Pitch Bend/Modulation-Hebel sowieeine Anschlussbuchse fr ein Haltepedal(SUSTAIN SWITCH) belegt.

Umfassende MIDI-KontrolleMit dem PC-300 kann man Klngeexterner Module anwhlen, indem manProgramm- und Bankwechselbefehlesendet (Bankwechsel= Steuerbefehle CC00und CC32). Es kann also jeder beliebigeGS-Klang aufgerufen werden.

Darber hinaus kann man dem DATAENTRY-Regler eine groe Anzahl vonMIDI-Steuerbefehlen zuordnen und dengewnschten Parameter (Hall- oderChorus-Tiefe zum Beispiel) dann bequemmit dem Regler einstellen.

Dank seiner kompakten Abmessungen,passt das PC-300 bestimmt auf IhrenSchreibtisch. Es wird mit Sicherheit einwichtiger Bestandteil IhrerComputermusik-Anlage. Das PC-300erlaubt nicht nur, eigene Stcke in Echtzeitoder Schritt fr Schritt aufzuzeichnen,sondern auch die Melodie zu einemStandard MIDI File zu spielen (MinusOne).

Stromspeisung Schalten Sie das PC-300 sowie die brigen

Gerte aus, bevor Sie sie miteinander verbinden.Nur so ist sichergestellt, dass nichts beschdigtwird.

Stellen Sie den POWER-Schalter auf derRckseite immer der gewhltenStromversorgung entsprechend (Netzteil oderUSB) ein.

Schlieen Sie das PC-300 niemals an einenStromkreis an, mit dem Sie bereits ein Gertverbunden haben, das Strspannungengeneriert.

Die Spannungsanforderungen des PC-300finden Sie neben dem DC IN-Anschluss sowieauf dem Typenschild des Netzteils. Whlen Sieimmer eine Steckdose, die diesen Ansprchengengt.

Achten Sie darauf, dass das Kabel des Netzteilsnicht gequetscht wird. Stellen keine schwerenGegenstnde darauf.

Ziehen Sie beim Lsen des Netzanschlussesimmer am Stecker und niemals am Kabel, umdas Reien der Adern zu vermeiden.

Wenn Sie das PC-300 lngere Zeit nichtverwenden mchten, lsen Sie am besten denNetzanschluss.

Aufstellung Meiden Sie extreme Temperaturen (direktes

Sonnenlicht, Auto usw.). Stellen Sie das PC-300nicht an einen staubigen, feuchten oder starkvibrierenden Ort.

Bei Verwendung des PC-300 in der Nhe einerEndstufe usw. kann es zu Strspannungenkommen.

Dieses Gert kann den Radio- bzw.Fernsehempfang beeintrchtigen. Stellen Sie dasPC-300 notfalls woanders hin.

Pflege Wischen Sie das PC-300 mit einem weichen,

trockenen bzw. leicht angefeuchteten Tuch ab.Hartnckigen Schmutz knnen Sie mit einermilden Seifenlauge entfernen. Wischen Sie dasInstrument anschlieend wieder trocken.

Verwenden Sie zum Reinigen niemalsWaschbenzin, Lsungsmittel oder Alkohol, umdas Gehuse nicht unntig zu beschdigen.

Weitere Vorsichtsmanahmen Behandeln Sie das PC-300 mit der gebotenen

Umsicht.

Lassen Sie weder Metallgegenstnde nochFlssigkeiten in das Gerteinnere gelangen.Geschieht das doch, schalten Sie das Instrumentbitte sofort aus und wenden sich an IhrenRoland-Hndler.

Eine leichte Erwrmung dieses Instrumentswhrend des Betriebes ist vllig normal.

Bevor Sie das PC-300 im Ausland verwenden,erkundigen Sie sich bitte bei Ihrem Hndlernach der dort verwendeten Netzspannung.

Wenn das PC-300 nicht mehr erwartungsgemfunktioniert, schalten Sie es sofort aus. ReichenSie es danach bei Ihrem Hndler zur Reparaturein.

Um den Garantieanspruch zu wahren, ffnenSie das PC-300 am besten niemals selbst.

Das PC-300 kann entweder mit dembeiliegenden Netzteil oder ber eine USB-Verbindung mit dem Computer mit Stromversorgt werden.

Stromversorgung

Stromspeisung ber die USB-Verbindung1. Verbinden Sie den USB-Anschluss desPC-300 mit einer freien USB-Buchse IhresPCs (siehe Seite 10).Verwenden Sie hierfr das beiliegendeUSB-Kabel.

2. Schalten Sie den Computer ein.

Verwendung des beiliegenden NetzteilsAnmerkung: Verwenden Sie ausschlielich dasbeiliegende Netzteil (ACA-Serie). DieVerwendung anderer Netzteile kann zuSchden oder sogar Stromschlgen fhren.

Ansteuern anderer MIDI-Instrumente1. Verbinden Sie die MIDI OUT-Buchse des PC-300 mit dem MIDI IN-Anschluss desSoundmoduls, das Sie ansteuern mchten.

2. Stellen Sie den KEYBOARD/PC-Schalter des PC-300 auf KEYBOARD.

USB-Verbindung mit dem Computer1. Schlieen Sie die USB-Buchse des PC-300 an einen USB-Port des Computers an.

2. Stellen Sie den KEYBOARD/PC-Schalter des PC-300 auf PC.

Einschalten der Anlage1. Schalten Sie die einzelnen Gerte Ihrer Anlage immer in der richtigen Reihenfolge ein: Schalten Sie immer zuerst die Gerte ein, die MIDI-Daten senden (hier also das PC-300).

Die POWER-Diode des PC-300 leuchtet nun.Anmerkung: Wenn Sie das PC-300 ber das beiliegende Netzteil speisen, mssen Sie den POWER-Schalter auf ON (DC IN) stellen. Haben Sie es an einen USB-Port angeschlossen, so mssen Sieden POWER-Schalter auf ON (USB) stellen. In dem Fall brauchen Sie das Netzteil nicht.

Schalten Sie anschlieend das Soundmodul, den Computer und die Aktivboxen o.. ein.

2. Schalten Sie die Anlage in umgekehrter Reihenfolge wieder aus.Anmerkung: Das PC-300 ist mit einer Schutzschaltung ausgestattet. Daher dauert es nachEinschalten ein paar Sekunden, bis es voll funktionstchtig ist.

Das PC-300 funktioniert nurerwartungsgem, wenn es auf demMIDI-Kanal sendet, auf dem dasSoundmodul empfngt. Da Siewahrscheinlich ein multitimbralesSoundmodul verwenden, mssen Sie denMIDI-Kanal whlen, der demanzusteuernden Part zugewiesen ist.

2. Whlen Sie den MIDI-Kanal, indem Sieeine MIDI CHANNELS-Taste [6]drcken.

KlangauswahlFr die Auswahl des gewnschten Klangesfr einen Part bzw. eines Drum Sets frden Schlagzeug-Part (MIDI-Kanal 10)werden Bank- und Programmwechsel-Befehle gesendet.

Klangauswahl fr ein GS-ModulUm einen Klang eines GS-Modulsanzuwhlen, mssen Sie einerseits Bank-wechselbefehle mit den Controller-Nummern CC00 (H) und CC32 (L)und andererseits einen Programmwechsel-Befehl (PC) senden.

Die bentigte Klangbank muss immer miteinem H- und L-Wert angegebenwerden. Andererseits wird kein Klangaufgerufen, wenn Sie nur diese beidenBefehle senden. Es muss auch eineProgrammnummer bertragen werden.

Das PC-300 sendet daher immer Befehls-stze mit folgenden Elementen:

Auswahl eines Drum Sets frein GS-Modul

Der Schlagzeugpart (MIDI-Kanal 10)eines GS-Moduls wertetBankwechselbefehle nicht aus. Beim

Senden eines Programmwechsel-Befehlswerden aber sowieso auch zweiBankadressen bertragen, weil sich dasPC-300 die zuletzt gewhlten Werte merkt.Aus diesem Grund mssen Sie fr Hund L den Wert 0 eingeben und erstdanach die Programmnummer whlen.Nur dann ist sichergestellt, dass dasrichtige Drum Set gewhlt wird.

7. Funktionen fr einexpressiveres Spiel

Beugen der gespielten Noten(Pitch Bend)

Schieben Sie denBENDER/MODULATION-Hebel [1] nachlinks oder rechts, um Pitch Bend-Befehlezu senden, mit denen die Tonhhe dergespielten Noten zeitweilig gendertwerden kann.

Anmerkung: Das Pitch Bend-Intervall(Range) richtet sich nach der betreffendenEinstellung fr den Part oder das Modul.

Hinzufgen von Vibrato(Modulation)

Schieben Sie denBENDER/MODULATION-Hebel [1] zurGerterckseite, um Modulationsbefehlezu senden. Diese beeinflussen dann diegespielten Noten (in der Regel wird einVibrato-Effekt erzeugt).

Anmerkung: Wie intensiv das Vibrato ist,richtet sich nach den Einstellungen desangesteuerten Moduls. In bestimmten Fllenwird das Filter bzw. die Lautstrke beeinflusst,so dass ein WahWah- bzw. Tremolo-Effektentsteht.

Halten der gespielten Noten(Sustain)

Schlieen Sie einen optionalen DP-2, DP-6oder BOSS FS-5U Futaster an dieSUSTAIN SWITCH-Buchse an undbettigen Sie ihn, whrend Sie eine odermehrere Noten spielen, um einen Hold 1-Befehl zu senden (CC64). Dieser sorgtdafr, dass die Noten gehalten werden. Beibestimmten Klngen, wie z.B. Orgelwerden die Noten sogar so lange gehalten,bis Sie den Futaster wieder freigeben.

Bei Bettigen des Futasters wird ein An-Befehl gesendet (Wert 127). Wenn Sie ihnwieder freigeben, wird ein Aus-Befehlgesendet (0).

Anmerkung: Die CC 64-Funktion (Hold 1)kann auch dem DATA ENTRY-Reglerzugeordnet werden, so dass die Noten auchdurch Bewegen des Reglers gehalten werdenknnen.

Einstellen einer tieferen Oktave:OCTAVE []Drcken Sie den []-Taster einmal,um die Tastatur eine Oktave tiefer zutransponieren. Kanal-Aftertouch ist ein Befehl, mit demman (bereits angeschlagene) Noten durchhinunter Drcken der betreffenden Tastenverzieren kann. Beim PC-300 mssen Siezum Senden dieser Befehle allerdings denDATA ENTRY-Regler verwenden.

Im Falledes Schlagzeug-Parts (MIDI-Kanal 10)ndern Sie dann allerdings dieStereoposition aller Schlagzeugklnge (d.h.eine verhltnismige Verschiebung allerKlnge des Drum Sets).



3. Drcken Sie die schwarze C#4-Taste(PANPOT) in der DATA ENTRYASSIGNMENT-Sektion [7].

4. Drcken Sie MIDI/SELECT [3] nocheinmal (die Diode erlischt).Nun dient der DATA ENTRY-Regler zumSenden von Panorama-Daten, mit denenman die Stereoposition des angesteuertenKlangs bestimmen kann. Je weiter Sie denRegler nach unten schieben, desto weiterrechts befindet sich der Klang. Wenn Sieden Regler ganz hochfahren, befindet sichder Klang hart links.

Anmerkung: Bei bestimmten Modulen, wiedem MT-32 oder TD-8 usw. verhlt sich diePanoramafunktion genau umgekehrt.

Andere Steuerbefehle fr den DATA ENTRY-Regler

Die bis jetzt erwhnten Befehle (Panorama, Lautstrke usw.) werden von fast jedemInstrument empfangen. Vielleicht mchten Sie aber auch noch andere Parameter desModuls ansteuern. Ordnen Sie dem DATA ENTRY-Regler dann den betreffendenSteuerbefehl zu und senden Sie die Befehle mit diesem Regler.

Es knnen alle Steuerbefehle zwischen CC00 und CC127 gesendet werden. Das PC-300bietet jedoch kein Display und erlaubt also nicht die berwachung der gesendeten Werte.Aus diesem Grunde eignet es sich wahrscheinlich nicht fr Registered und Non-RegisteredParameter Numbers (RPN bzw. NRPN). Bedenken Sie auerdem, dass CC00 und CC32allgemein als Bankwechselbefehle verwendet werden, so dass das Senden eines Wertes freinen dieser Steuerbefehle oftmals kein hrbares Ergebnis zur Folge hat.

A: Ab Werk ist ein GS-Modul so eingestellt,dass es keine Aftertouch-Befehleempfngt. Diese Funktion mssen Siealso erst einmal aktivieren (und zwar miteinem SysEx-Befehl). Vielleicht bietet IhrSequenzer-Programm eine Funktion, mitder man den Empfang von Aftertouch-Daten schneller aktivieren kann.

Linterface USB pr-sente un double avantage: elle offre une alternative pour alimenter le PC-300 et elle assurela compatibilit avec les derniers ordinateurs IBM PC (ou compatibles) et Macintosh.

Mode demploi

Le PC-300 Roland est un clavier decontrle MIDI. Il est donc conu pourtransmettre des messages de changementde programme et de slection de banqueainsi quune srie dautres messages MIDI(comme lintensit de rverbration ou deChorus) un module de sons externe. LePC-300 ne contient pas de gnrateur desons interne. Il est en effet destin aucontrle de modules de sons compatiblesavec le format GS (que nous conviendronsdappeler simplement modules de sonsGS dans la suite de ce manuel).

A propos du format GS (g)Le format GS est un ensemble de spcifi-cations standardises pour gnrateurs desons Roland; il dfinit la manire dont lesgnrateurs de sons multitimbres rpon-dent aux commandes MIDI. Tout instru-ment compatible GS est facilement recon-naissable son logo GS. Quel que soit lemodule ou le dispositif GS employ, lesmessages MIDI que vous transmettezdepuis le PC-300 produiront toujours uneffet identique.

Remarque: Tous les modules de sons GS deRoland sont entirement compatibles avec leformat General MIDI Level 1 (m).

En 1990, la norme MIDI senrichissait avecles messages slection de banque (permet-tant de choisir des sons avec les messagesde changement de programme ainsi queles commandes de contrle CC00 etCC32). Le format GS met profit cettecombinaison de commandes et permetdonc la slection dun nombre de sonsbien plus vaste.

Deux mots sur les sons dun module GSUn module de sons GS contient 128 sonsde base (appels Capital Tones) ainsiquune srie de sons de variation(Variations). Lagencement des sons debase se fait conformment au formatGeneral MIDI Level 1. La banque 0contient les sons de base, tandis que lessons de variation se trouvent dans lesbanques 1~127. Le nombre de variationsdisponibles dpend du module de sonsutilis. Voyez le manuel du module pilotpour en savoir plus sur le nombre de sonset la faon de les slectionner.

Drum Sets dun module de sons GSLe canal MIDI 10, utilis pour la partierythmique dun module GM/GS, permetde choisir plusieurs Drum Sets outre le kitde batterie de base (le Standard Set corres-pondant au numro de programmePC01). La plupart des Drum Sets peuventtre slectionns avec des messages dechangement de programme. Cependant,votre module de sons offre peut-tre aussides Drum Sets de variation. Pour en savoirplus, voyez le manuel de votre module.

Remarque: Si le son ou le Drum Set de varia-tion que vous avez tent de slectionner nestpas disponible sur votre module GS, ce dernierpourrait ne produire aucun son, voire utiliserun Drum Set autre que celui spcifi.

Interface USBLe port USB du PC-300 permet de bran-cher ce dernier un ordinateur IBM PC(ou compatible) ou Macintosh (iMac,G4, etc.) quip dun connecteur USB. Ceformat de connexion intelligent assure letransfert hyper-rapide des donnes et per-met en outre dalimenter les appareilsconnects.

Pilotes USB Le PC-300 est livr avec divers pilotes USBpour ordinateurs IBM PC (ou compa-tibles) et Macintosh. Pour en savoir plus,voyez le fascicule fourni.

Dtonnantes possibilits dejeu et dexpression

Le clavier standard 49 touches duPC-300 est sensible au toucher, ce qui vouspermet de traduire les nuances de jeu lesplus subtiles. Vous disposez aussi dunefonction pratique Octave Shift permettantde transposer la hauteur du clavier. Enfin,le PC-300 comporte un levierBENDER/MODULATION et une priseSUSTAIN SWITCH destine brancherune pdale de maintien.

Des fonctions de contrlecompltes

Le PC-300 vous permet de choisir les sonsvia une combinaison de messages MIDI dechangement de programme et de slectionde banque (CC00 et CC32). Si votremodule de sons GS propose des sons devariation, vous pourrez donc les choisiravec le PC-300.

Vous pouvez en outre contrler une sriede paramtres avec le curseur DATAENTRY en lui assignant des commandesde contrle (CC). Cela vous permet, parexemple, de contrler lintensit de leffetReverb ou Chorus sur un module de sonsGS.

Mode demploi

Utilisez exclusivement ladaptateur secteurfourni (adaptateur de la srie ACA).Lutilisation de tout autre adaptateurpourrait endommager linstrument, voireentraner une panne ou une lectrocution.

Alimentation Pour prvenir les risques dendommagement ou

de panne, mettez tous les lments hors tensionavant deffectuer une connexion.

Veillez rgler le commutateur POWER dupanneau arrire sur la source dalimentationutilise (adaptateur secteur ou USB).

Nutilisez pas cet appareil sur le mme rseau desecteur quun dispositif gnrant du bruit deligne, tel quun moteur lectrique ou un systmedclairage intensit variable.

Veillez ce que la tension dlivre par la prisede courant utilise soit conforme aux spcifica-tions dalimentation de cet appareil. Vous trou-verez celles-ci ct de la prise DC IN (sur lepanneau arrire) ainsi que sur la plaque deladaptateur secteur.

Manipulez le cordon de ladaptateur secteuravec douceur. De mme, ne marchez jamais des-sus, ne dposez pas dobjets lourds dessus, etc.

Ne dbranchez jamais ladaptateur secteur entirant sur son cordon. Tirez toujours sur lafiche.

Si vous navez pas lintention dutiliser lappareilpendant une priode prolonge, dbranchezladaptateur secteur de la prise de courant.

Emplacement Evitez de ranger lappareil dans des endroits

soumis des tempratures extrmes (en pleinsoleil dans une voiture, par exemple). Evitezgalement de ranger/dutiliser lappareil dans unendroit particulirement poussireux ou humi-de, ou dans un endroit soumis des vibrationsexcessives.

Lutilisation de cet appareil proximit dampli-ficateurs de puissance (ou dautres appareilscomportant de gros transformateurs) pourraitproduire un bourdonnement.

Cet appareil pourrait crer des interfrencesavec des rcepteurs radio ou tlviseurs placs proximit. Utilisez cet appareil une distancesuffisante de ces rcepteurs.

Entretien Pour nettoyer lappareil, frottez-le avec un chif-

fon doux et sec (ou lgrement imbib deau).Pour des taches rebelles, utilisez un dtergentdoux et non abrasif. Veillez ensuite essuyersoigneusement lappareil avec un chiffon douxet sec.

Nutilisez jamais de benzne, de diluant, dal-cool ni aucun solvant, car ceux-ci risquent dedcolorer/dformer le botier de lappareil.

Prcautions supplmentaires Ne soumettez pas lappareil des chocs violents.

Ne laissez pntrer aucun objet ou liquide lintrieur de lappareil. Si jamais un objet oudu liquide a pntr lintrieur du PC-300,dbranchez-le immdiatement du secteur etcontactez un centre de rparation agr sanstarder.

Lappareil chauffe lgrement pendant lutilisa-tion. Cette production de chaleur est tout faitnormale.

Avant dutiliser cet appareil dans un autre pays,renseignez-vous auprs dun technicien qualifisur les spcifications du secteur.

Si vous remarquez un fonctionnement anormalou que vous suspectez une panne, cessez aussi-tt dutiliser lappareil. Adressez-vous sans tar-der un centre de rparation agr.

Nouvrez jamais le botier de lappareil, car celapourrait entraner une lectrocution.

Vous pouvez alimenter le PC-300 avecladaptateur secteur fourni ou en connec-tant son port USB votre ordinateur.

Source dalimentation

Alimentation via USB1. Raccordez le port USB du PC-300 unport USB libre de votre ordinateur (voyezla page 10).Effectuez cette connexion avec le cbleUSB fourni.

2. Mettez votre ordinateur sous tension.

Alimentation via ladaptateur fourniRemarque: Utilisez exclusivement ladaptateursecteur fourni (srie ACA). Lutilisation detout autre adaptateur pourrait entraner unepanne ou une lectrocution.
