What is a Coupling?

• Coupling is the act of joining two things together.• A coupling is a device used to connect two shafts

together at their ends for the purpose of transmitting power.

• Couplings do not normally allow disconnection of shafts during operation, however there are torque limiting couplings which can slip or disconnect when some torque limit is exceeded.

How does it look?

Characteristics of Ideal coupling for practical applications.

• No lubrication should be required.• Fit and forget.• Light weight with high torque.• Great range of misalignment allowable.• Lower thrust load and bending moment.• Superior resistance to environmental

conditions.• Easy mounting and dismounting.

Rigid flange coupling.

• A rigid coupling is a unit of hardware used to join two shafts within a motor or mechanical system.

• Torsionally stiff rigid couplings are best used on shafts that are already in proper alignment, so are well-suited to pump, mixer, drive shafts, and other power transmission applications.

Selection process

• Determine the length of spacer.• Determine the load torque.• Select coupling size equal to or greater than

coupling Torque.• Verify the shaft diameter.• Check for existence of space limit.• Check for dynamic balancing.
