Bachman, Nathan DeWitt
United States – History – Civil War, 1861-1865
Nathan DeWitt Bachman enlisted in Bristol and served in the
3rd and 63
rd Tennessee regiments. Bachman saw action at First
Manassas, Chickamauga, Fort Sanders at Knoxville, Walthall
Station, Drewry‟s Bluff, and Petersburg where he was slightly
wounded. He also engaged in numerous skirmishes and guarded
against bushwackers in the mountains of East Tennessee. He
surrendered with Lee at Appomattox. He attained the rank of
adjutant of the 63rd regiment. “Confederate soldiers were not
„Rebels,‟” Bachman concluded. “They fought and contended for
rights and privileges guaranteed by the Constitution, and the
mere fact of our defeat should not be taken as evidence that our
Cause was not just.”
