Welcome to the 2019 Manx Telecom Parish Walk. The “Parish” challenge, as always remains the same, finishers must cover 85 miles, visit 17 parish churches and return to Douglas Promenade before the 24 hour deadline. It is a true test of endurance and mental strength for those who finish the full course of which there were 184 last year. However every walker can set their own target of one of the intermediary churches and all who achieve their target are winners in their own right. It is gratifying to see such a good entry this year of 1620, a figure well up on recent years.

2018 saw a return to form for race winner Richard Gerrard who came home first in a time of 15 hours, 25 minutes and 9 seconds. This was Richard’s 5th win of the Parish and he saw off the challenge of 2017 winner Liam Parker with a commanding performance. Richard has been given the number one vest as he returns to start line to defend his title and Liam has been seeded number 2. Bernie Johnson continued the trend of new names on the Boundary Harriers Cup by winning the Ladies section in a time of 17 hours, 37 minutes and 12 seconds, which was good enough for 12th place overall. Bernie will be toeing the line again as she attempts to best the other ladies. All previous full distance finishers are seeded 1 to 226. Look out for a walker at the front end of the race wearing a high number as he / she may be the best first time finisher and in line to win the Millennium Shield for the best local newcomer.

The Manx Harriers welcomes Manx Telecom as the main sponsor of the Parish Walk. They have shown tremendous support for the event since becoming the headline sponsor in 2012 having sponsored the electronic timing since 2007. This steadfast support both technical and financial has allowed us to develop the race into the largest participation event on the island. We are constantly looking to improve the experience for all the walkers and this year we are providing a video clip of every finisher as they cross the line. These videos will be attached to the results page and easily downloaded.

This years race will be the 25th that I have headed up the organising committee. I completed the Parish in 1994 when there were only 11 finishers from an entry of 231. How things have changed since that time.

But one thing has remained constant and that is the incredible sense of elation that all the walkers have when they have reached their goal or the finish line on Douglas Prom. One very sad change to our team this time is the loss of Geoff Walmsley who died in December. Geoff was a tireless worker and jovial member of the committee. We miss him acutely and the committee extend their condolences to Sylvia and all the family.

Colebourns are kindly supplying the plasma screens for relaying race information as it happens at the finish line on Saturday night. Intersport have kindly helped with the prizes again this year. Our feed station sponsors are Barclays Bank, 3FM, Zedra, Shoprite, Hospice, Mann Vend, SMP, KPMG, IOM Creamery, Zurich, DQ Advocates, Thomas Miller, Paragon, PWC, Hamblin, Up and Running, Poker Stars, Rushen Round Table, IQEQ, Applebys, Estera, Arthritis Care, The Isle of Man Bank, Canada Life and the IOM Business Network. Davisons Manx Dairy Ices will at Peel and ELS Ltd will be providing professional event production for the presentation evening at the Villa Marina on June 25th. Manx Radio will be providing up to date coverage of the race as it happens. Thank you to all of them.

We acknowledge the help that we receive from the Tourism Events, the Civil Defence, the Coast Guard, the Police and St John Ambulance.

I personally would like to thank the members of the organising committee, Liz Corran, Karen Kneale, Debbie Surgeon, Allan Callow, Martin Lambden, Winston Liu, Kevin Walmsley, Allan Bell, Jock Waddington, Adam Killip, Geoff and Rachel Quayle, John and Joan Ryder all of whom have selflessly given up so much of their time over the past 12 months.

Finally a big thank you to all the officials, marshals, checkers-in and all those members of the public who come out every year to make the Parish Walk the unique experience that it is.

To all the competitors please read and observe the rules carefully and obey the marshals’ instructions as they are there for your own safety.

Good luck and enjoy your Parish Walk. Raymond Cox Race Director.

A Welcome from the Race Director

Since the number of entrants in the Parish Walk really began to take off in the mid-1990s, the popularity of the event has grown exponentially and today it seems impossible to imagine this classic occasion taking place without the huge amount of community input it now enjoys, involving many thousands of people whether they are walking, marshalling, supporting or spectating.

In recent years, there has also been a growing trend for some competitors to take part in fancy dress, whether in aid of a specific cause or simply for fun. This is perhaps partly inspired by events such as the London Marathon, which has a much higher percentage of people taking part dressed-up, although given how much flatter the London Marathon route is than the Parish Walk, it is probably not surprising that not too many people have decided to take on the challenge of walking over undulating terrain whilst weighed down by a heavy (and probably rather warm) costume.

Having said that, a look back at the archives over the last few years reveals a variety of interesting costume choices, and a few stand out in particular.

Marcia Brabbs made a bold statement in 2011 by taking part in pink high-heeled shoes to raise funds for charity, walking the 11 miles to Santon church in a time of 3 hours and 12 minutes, which is a significant effort.

In 2013 the 3-man bob team ‘Cooil ny Rhunnings’ of David Horisk, Paul Kennish and Matt Cannell walked to Peel to raise money for Hospice in a fantastic recreation of the hit 1993 film ‘Cool Runnings’ although the

temperature in those outfits would have been anything but cool!

The following year saw a hat-trick of very respectable efforts on the costume front. Joanne Crellin aka Superwoman must have needed superhuman endurance, but she walked to Peel in a shade over 9 hours. Although the lack of race number makes it impossible to be certain, an educated guess is that the gentleman in the jester’s hat is Roger Cave, who reached Peel in just over 8 hours. Completing the repertoire is the doubles pairing of Steven Quinn and Al Graham (on the right with the orange bandana) who had both previously finished the event but were content with Peel this time around.

More recent years appear to have been slightly leaner in terms of alternative dress but Owain Flanders and Alex McGowan made a fruity choice by taking part as bananas in 2017. Both made it to Peel, which was a super effort considering that the temperature on the Sloc on that day was well above 20 degrees Celsius.

Who knows what is in store for us in 2019, but keep an eye out for some interesting costumes en route.

Perhaps there should be a prize for best fancy dress? After all, there is already a prize for best feeding station…

Geoff Walmsley and Henry Harvey

In the last 12 months the Parish Walk has unfortunately lost two individuals who have made huge contributions to the event over a great number of years.

Geoff Walmsley was an enthusiastic and valued committee member for a great many years. He was a jovial presence at registration, keen to share words of advice and encouragement. He was responsible for ensuring walker safety around the whole course, from the start at the NSC, through the hours of darkness right to the finish. Geoff very sadly passed away at the end of December and is very much missed.

Henry Harvey, a true pioneer of the sport who took part in the 1960 Parish Walk (which marked the beginning of the event as we know it today) very sadly passed away in April this year at the age of 85. Henry won the event three times (in 1961,1962 and 1964) setting a best time of 16:21:06 when winning the event for the third time.

The Parish Walk Committee expresses its sincere condolences to the family and friends of Geoff and Henry.
