A) GETTING STARTED – ABOUT MAPINFO (1)
1) What Is Mapinfo?
- A Geoprahical Information System (GIS) Software Package
- Its concept is based on Windows Icon Menu Pointer (WIMP) & graphical User Interface (GUI)
- Allows user to import geographically reference data & creating thematic maps for different variables
2) Basic GIS
- GIS is a powerful set of tools for collecting, storing, retrieving, transforming & displaying spatial data from the real world- GIS maybe raster i.e a continuous surface stored as cells or vector stored as discrete point, line or polygon objects with attribute
- Mapinfo is vector based GIS
3) Vector Based Mapinfo
- Points : Single Data Locations with X & Y Coordinates
- Lines : Connections between two points
- Polygons/Regions : a closed area composed of points which are joined by lines
- Attributes : the text attached to any point, line or polygon entity

4) Mapinfo File Formats
- filename.tab : a Mapinfo table
- filename.map : The coordinates of the data
- filename.dat : the attribute data
- filename.id : an index file, containing the links between objects in the .map file and attributes in the .dat file.
- filename.ind : an index file for the .dat file, in order to allow searches.

Mapinfo Tables
- Mapinfo table that we can work with have file extension such as “Digisites.tab”
- Other file formats that can be converted to “.tab” format are:
1) Mapinfo Interchange Format (.mif & .mid) – eg: Asset coverage export
2) Microsoft Excel Files (.xls)

C) CREATING THEMATIC MAPS (1)Thematic Maps
- Thematic maps are maps which are of one particular variable.
- This may be, for example, a map showing the population Density of Malaysia.
- Producing professional thematic maps is one of MapInfo's great strengths.
Example 1: Displaying Population Density of P.Malaysia
Example 2: Displaying Signal Strength Plot Results from a drive test

D) ADVANCED FEATURES - QUERIES (1)Queries
- Queries enable a user to extract or combine the required or desired data from any mapinfo table, based on criteria selection
eg:
1) Points within an enclosed region or polygon
2) Joining two tables together, eg, MCOM Site & Daily Statistics
3) Filters Function, similar to Excel
