KVH Solutions Managed storage services In 1996, Mapion launched the first internet-based map information service in Japan. Since then, the company has expanded its services to include local advertising and media services through the “Mapion Map Data” service, application service provider (ASP) services to provide its corporate customers with information about the “Mobile Mapion” service, and a mobile phone game called “Keitai Kunitori Gassen” which leverages mobile GPS data. Mapion had been experiencing a rapidly increasing demand for information and a higher standard of services. Also, demand for customized map data from the corporate users of Mapion’s ASP services had been increasing. To ensure precision and reliability of information, a variety of extensive map data was required to meet the demands of Mapion’s customers. Mapion needed to expand its storage infrastructure to prepare enough storage capacity for its continuously increasing map data. Further, the solution needed to be cost-effective, while improving the level of its services. Mapion evaluated that they would be able to reduce rack space, consumption of electricity, and monthly operational costs (facility and staff) by adopting KVH managed services. KVH’s flexible and reliable managed services were able to meet the necessary data storage requirements, and enabled Mapion to renew its infrastructure without having to make major changes to its existing network environment.
