Maple Leaf – Almrausch Bavaria Tour 2008

On July 11, 2008 a group of 22 members of the GTEV Maple Leaf – Almrausch, Ottawa boarded a plane bound for Munich.  This would be the first stop of many during the groups’ third and highly anticipated Bavarian tour. 

Our first scheduled stop on the tour was Obermenzing, north of Munich. Our caravan of cars and vans squeezed through tiny streets and parked in cozy little parking spots by our Pensions, which had been kindly arranged by Hans Menzinger. 

The afternoon and evening activities consisted of a parade, which included various Vereine from the area, to a wonderful outdoor church service commemorating the 30th anniversary of Obermenzing Verein Der Heimat‐ und Volkstrachtenverein “D´Würmtaler” that was concluded by the firing of the Böller. A Heimatabend followed later showcasing a highly talented band, children’s singing performances, a duet accompanied by guitar and other fittingperformances.  Our group was honoured to play the Kuhglocken and Goasslschnalzen as part of the evening program.   

 

After being awake for 36 hours, we were happy to collapse into our puffy feather beds for a well deserved sleep.   

The Obermenzing Verein Der Heimat‐ und Volkstrachtenverein “D´Würmtaler” Menzing e.V. Carlhäusl, originally built in 1726 and recently restored, was our gathering point for a buffet breakfast which Hans and Ingrid Menzinger kindly prepared for us.  One of the Trachtler who helped restore Carlhäusl gave us a riveting retelling of the history of the quaint little Vereinsheim.  It was here that we learned a saying in Obermenzing from 1863 which reads: 

“Mia san net von Pasing Mia san net von Loam

Mia san ja vom lustinga Menzing dahoam”

 

After filling our bellies it was time to head into Munich to take in some of the sights.  Since it was raining we decided to take a bus tour of Munich.  We relaxed on a double decker tour bus that drove around the city while absorbing information from our well‐versed tour guide. 

 

Late Sunday afternoon we headed down the street from our Pensions, past the historic Vereinsheim, where we continued the weekend celebration of the 3o Vereinsjubilaum.  The Gartenfest, held in a customized barn, allowed for a good measure of live brass band music, folk dancing, food and drink. 

 

The next morning before leaving, we stopped in at Trachten Pöhlmann for a quick shopping trip.  Gearing up for our journey ahead, we proudly attached our Canadian flags to our car antennas and formed a caravan to follow one another through more pouring rain, to our next stop, the Hotel Garni in Diessen.   

After checking in at the hotel we headed for the hills to lunch at the famous Andechs Monastery Bräurei for beer, schnitzel and the biggest pigs’ knuckles you have ever seen but first we had to pick up our personal tour guide. 

 

Arrangements were made for our group to pick up Peter Kaindl in town who would in turn direct us to the historic landmark.  As we neared the pick‐up location the lead van slowed as a gentleman waved him down.  The lead driver directed this man to our group leaders van to get in with him.  Richard Nairne, the groups Vorplattler, tour leader and 2. Gauvorplattler pulled over and asked if he was Peter, the man smiled and nodded yes, and was happily welcomed into the van.  Introductions were made, all be it one sided and off we went.  After about 2 kilometres Richard began to get a funny feeling about this stranger he had just picked up.  It seems the man didn’t speak the best German and when asked for the second time if he was Peter he said “no” which caused a shiver up Richard’s spine.  The tailing vehicles were shocked to see the lead van tear off to the side of the road.  Richard jumped out and ran to the van immediately behind and declared “I got the wrong guy!  We’re going back!” It was at this moment the other passengers said they saw a couple of men in lederhosen standing on the side of the road waving as we drove by.   The hitchhiker was left there as we turned and headed back for town.  Sure enough there were the same men in lederhosen, patiently waiting for us to return.   You see what 

we haven’t told you yet, Peter Kaindl is the brother of Sepp Kaindl, the Vorstand of the Huosigau.  Thankfully, this was all laughed about over lunch (the rest of the trip actually).   

Located on the Holy Mountain above the eastern shore of the Ammersee in the middle of Upper Bavaria’s Five‐Lakes Region, Andechs Monastery is easily visible from far away. For more than half a millennium it has been a cherished destination for pilgrims. 

After our enjoyable lunch, we visited the tranquil Church on the grounds of the monastery itself.  We followed up with a short visit to the souvenir store located at the bottom of the church where we acquired a new piece of ‘tracht’… our very own blue and white diamond patterned umbrella.   

 

That evening we were invited to the Vereinsheim of D’Fuchsbergler Stoffen by Toni Auer 1. Vorstand and 2. Gauvorstand Lechgau for an evening of music, dancing, Schnalzen and a fabulous dinner.  We took turns whipping on the narrow street in front of Vereinsheim each being impressed with others’ talents.  The echo from the whips seemed to travel as far as the mountains and back. The precise cracking sound of the whips and the delicious smell of meat being grilled set the uplifting tone for the evening.  

Our hosts were truly excellent.  Our groups mixed together to teach and learn new dances.  The energy was boundless, and we barely stopped to take a breath.  The Stoffen musicians, some as young as 13, played melodies with admirable joy and pride. 

 

 

During the evening, a well‐deserved break was taken in order for Ottawa to present Stoffen with a handcrafted schnapps tray (made by Steve Volkmer).  Along with the tray, a bottle of Canadian Whiskey and Amarula  were given in order to fill the glasses and share in a toast.   

On a beautiful sunny Tuesday morning, our group, with ‘tour guide’ Peter Kaindl, visited Schloss Linderhof, which was King Ludwig of Bavaria’s favourite retreat.  After taking a tour of the castle, we walked through the palace park and up a steep hill to see the Venus Grotto that King Ludwig had had built to resemble the First Act of Wagner’s “Tannhäuser”.  Passing through an “open sesame” stone door opened by a secret latch we arrived in a magically lit cavern world. It was quite an amazing site to see this man‐made grotto complete with a lake, a golden swan boat and opera music playing in the background. 

 

 

Our three van chain followed the windy roads through forests and fields to find the D’Ammertaler Trachtenverein in Diessen that evening.  The Verein and its people were warm and inviting.  We found ourselves indulging in yet another classic, and delicious home cooked Bavarian meal. Before the sun set, whips were snapped and even bigger whips were cracked far into the field, the Apenschnalzen, that sounded like gunshots, could be heard echoing off the mountains around us.  Afterwards each group performed one or two of their own dances.   Between dance sessions, a musical performance played by members of their Verein showcased their many talents. 

 

In Diesen,as is customary, there was a presentation of gifts between Vereine.  It was at this time Richard Nairne, 2. Gauvorplattler presented Sepp Kaindl, 1. Vorstand Huosigau with a plaque on behalf of Tom Vogt, 1 Vorstand North American Gauverband.  Andreas Huber, the Vorplattler D’Ammertaler Trachtenverein and Magnus Kaindl their Vorplattler were as flattered as we were to receive such wonderful gifts from one another.  Also present was Florian Vief, 1. Gauvorplattler Huosigau,with whom Richard proudly removed his own Gauverband hatpin and presented it to him after which Florian returned the gesture by giving him his Gau pin. After exchanging gifts and swapping club pins the party continued till the wee hours of the morning.    

 

 

Happy to meet the morning filled with rays of sunshine, we took a tour of Neuschwanstein before heading to our next stop in Auerberg. The castle was beautiful, set high up on a hill.  We enjoyed a tour of the interior of the castle. Some of us also took a short hike to Queen Mary’s bridge, (Marienbruecke) which is set close to a waterfall.  As a boy, Ludwig II would play in that part of the woods.  King Ludwig II wanted a place left unspoiled by modern culture and technology, greed and haste.  This was meant to be his oasis, however as we were there it also became ours. 

 

 

 

By late afternoon our entourage of cars managed to climb the twisting and turning roads up to Auerberg where we stayed at the Panorama‐Gasthof.  Beside the Gasthof was a very small but historic church called St. Georg/Georgskirche. The church is 500 years old with intricate designs holy art, stone, metals and sculpture inside encouraging praise and worship.  If you dare, you can climb a narrow set of stairs up to the top of the church tower, and crawl through a small opening to stand on the roof of the church to see fields and mountains as far as the eye can see.  Absolutely breathtaking! 

 

Upon settling in, we visited the Bernbeuren Community Centre.  We toured through a party/bar area, indoor shooting range, dancing area, general gym with stage, weight room, band room, and facilities to juice and preserve harvested berries and vegetables.  As we were walking through the Vereinsheim, we noticed a sign on one of the doors which read, “Fingerhakeln “which is actually finger wrestling.  This is an old alpine athletic sport whereby two players sit opposite each other and try to pull the opponent over to their side of the table with their fingers. It is alleged that disputes used to be settled in this way however finger wrestling in its current form is in fact an organised sport. 

 

 

On Thursday morning, we left the hotel in pouring rain to visit the pilgrimage church of Wies with Max Bertl, 1. Gauvorstand, Oberer Lechgauverband being our host for the day. The Wieskirche, designed in the late 1740s, was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1983. We were very fortunate to have the priest himself give us a private tour of the church.  

 

 

Following this tour we gathered across the street at the Gasthof Moser for Weisswurst, pretzels and beer.  Then we proceeded to the local Cheese factory where we learned about the process of making cheese and taste tested fresh and wholesome buttermilk. We sat down for coffee and cake after the tour.  Our next stop on the town tour was the Maria Hilfer Sudhaus brewery, which is well known for their specialty beers of the Bavarian region. Tasty as always!  

 

 

In the evening, two area Vereine, d’Auerbergler Bernbeuren and Lechgau Prem, both with their town mayors in tow, joined us for a Bavarian‐Canadian Heimatabend .  After presenting gifts to Alfred Sieber, Vorstand D’Lechgauer and Sebastien Dreher, Vorstand d'Auerbergler Bernbeuren a special presentation was given to Max Bertl, 1. Vorstand Lechgau Prem .  A plaque from the North American Gauverband was give to Max on Behalf of Tom Vogt.  Also in attendance was Richard’s Gauverband counter part Joseph Wohlfahrt, 2. Gauvorplattler Oberer Lechgau‐Verband, turns out he was also the life of the party! The ambiance and Gemütlichkeit tied the groups together promoting an evening filled with camaraderie, dancing, a continuous flow of drinks and priceless music with lyrics that made us laugh out loud.   

 

 

On the Friday morning, we left Auerberg and continued our journey to Salzweg.  Salzweg, meaning “pathway for salt,” is a historical route where salt was transported.  Upon arriving in Salzweg, we were greeted by the members of the Trachtenverein Salzweg.  After a meet and greet in the Vereinsheim, we all walked over to the Salzweg Rathaus and were greeted and welcomed by Bürgermeister Wipplinger.  At the Bürgermeister’s office, we were toasted with champagne and then were offered a superb cold buffet.  After our visit with the Bürgermeister, we made our way back to thVereinsheim Salzweg where an amazing assortment of homemade cakes and tortes

 awaited us. 

 

Later that evening we returned to the Vereinsheim for a welcome evening.   It was truly a great evening.  Many of us knew each other from previous trips either to Salzweg or to Ottawa but there were a number of members that had never met and had only heard about the group, individual people, clubhouse or town.  It was a gathering that had the feeling of friends getting together again after a short trip away....hugs, laughter and chatter everywhere.  Even the new people were made to feel as if they had always belonged.  We were treated to a wonderful supper, drank beer and wine and danced the night away!  It was during this evening that the presentation of gifts between our Vereine was given.  For this tour a lot of thought was given to the gifts that were to be presented.  The main gift presented to Richard Schenk, Vorstand of the Salzweg Verein, was a paddle hand painted by Scarlett Russell representing both mans journey discovering Canada and the beautiful nature that lies between her shores. 

 

Small pins designed with both Verein logos and a combined Canadian/German flag were given as well as T‐Shirts for each of their members commemorating our visit.   A separate gift, a Maple Leaf Schnapps tray, made and burned by Richard Nairne was presented to Salweg’s Vorplattler, Martin Greiner.  The mantra burned into the tray is appropriately “Trachtler Warn Ma – Trachtler Samma ‐ Trachtler Bleib’n Ma”.  This truly captured all of our thoughts, translated “Dancers we were, Dancers we are, Dancers we always will be” (The actual translation of Trachtler = Performer in traditional costume).  The final presentation was a plaque that was presented on behalf of Tom Vogt, 1. Vorstand Gauverband Nordamerika to Richard Schenk wishing continued success and as a token friendship that extends from the Nordamerikan Gauverband to Heimat und Volkstrachtenverein Salzweg E.V. 

 

 

Saturday morning started with a dramatic and unforgettable walking tour of the city of Passau.   Members of the Trachetenverein Salzweg joined us on this city tour.   Our guide, the Stadtfuchs (city fox) was dressed in old century wardrobe and played his part magnificently involving individuals to act from our tour group in his story of the history of Passau. 

 

Roles such as the high bishop (Lousy), old woman, thief, town folk with plague, prince, doctor, lady of the evening were all pulled out of the crowd to add flare to the verbal illustration of the history of Passau.  At one point during the tour, the men from the group stood on the steps of a Palace and with our own young Mozart conducting themsang “Ein Prosit”.  Needless to say, this was a head turner for all other visitors in Passau that

, 

 day.  

 

After the city tour, we took a wonderful boat ride along the Danube on the “Kristallschiff – made exclusively with Swarovski Crystals”.  The weather couldn’t have been any better with the sun shining brightly in the blue sky.  The ship was an amazing sight to see… thousands of Swarovski crystals in the chandeliers, on the grand staircases leading to the 2nd level of the ship, on the tables, bars, floors and even in the restrooms. It was an elegant touch of class that gave us a glimpse of the lifestyles of the rich and famous. 

   

 

That evening we marched in a parade to the local Church and attended the church service to celebrate the 80. Vereinsjubilaum for HTV Salzweg.  As the church service commenced, the Trachtenverein Salzweg peacefully and quietly danced down the church aisles (for which they received special permission).  It was a meaningful entrance that made a visual as well as an emotional impact none will soon forget. 

After the church service we headed back for an evening celebration which included the Salzweger Tanzlmusi, Schuhplattler, Kuhglocken and Goasslschnalzen, with the Waidla Musi Group, Tiroler Trachtler Haiming and Kellberg Patenverein. 

Before our group had left Ottawa, it had been decided to provide the children who would be attending the 80. Vereinsjubilaum for HTV Salzweg with a small Canadian gift bag.  Fifty gift bags, which contained a Canadian flag, pin, teddy bear, ball, pencils, stickers, bookmark and other souvenirs were made by Larissa and Liam Russell and distributed to the children that Saturday evening. We thought it would be nice for the future dancers of this wonderful tradition to be acknowledappreciated as much as the adult dancers are.  The look of joy and excitement when the children were called up and given their gift bags while at the same time clutching their Canadian flags in their little hands was truly a great moment for us and one that we will always remember.

On Sunday morning, we all met at the Vereinsheim and boarded our bus to Prague.  Half way on our journey to the “Golden City,” we made a quick Bavarian breakfast stop which included big pretzels, pastries, wieners, horse sausages (Rosswurst) and some hot coffee.

Upon arriving in Prague, it was obvious that this was a very old city steeped in history.   We had a tour guide to help explain parts of the city.  Special thanks went to Heidi Rausch from the Ottawa group who provided translations for those that didn’t understand German.  We crossed the Vltava River, touched the Statue of John of Nepomuk on the Charles Bridge to ensure good luck, and grinned at an organ grinder.  After the tour, we had some time to ourselves to shop at the local market amongst the thousands of other tourists in the market square.  

 

 

 

Our bus ride back had a quieter volume compared to our bus ride to Prague where people were singing out to TV tunes.  Our day trip of sightseeing had taken a toll on everyone and put most of us to sleep for the three hours it took to return to our home base.  

Our last evening in Salzweg was spent by enjoying one last meal together with our friends which consisted of delicious food, drinks and lots of laughter accompanied by several toasts of friendship and gratitude.  Even though we were all having so much fun, the telltale sign of the restaurant lights being flicked on and off let us know that it was time for us to call it a night and say our last good byes.   

When we arrived in Salzweg, we said we had come home which we truly felt.  However with all good things, this moment too had to come to an end.  We will forever treasure our memories, friends and look forward to the day when we will all meet again.  We were blessed on our journey and for that we are truly thankful.

Unfortunately Erech Morrison, our Vorstand and organizer of this unforgettable tour, was unable to join us for this trip.  At the last moment an injury which required immediate surgery prevented him from flying.  Although he was not there in body he was there in all our hearts.  Thank you Erech, for organizing such a wonderful tour!
