MAPLE LEAF HOUSE

Even some of the most strikingly beautiful elements in nature can be rep-licated easily by a child’s hands. Building a Maple Leaf House combines the ingenuity and magic of being a kid in the woods, improvising your own tools and methods, with the production of something simple, beautiful, and use-ful. This house becomes a microcosm of an imaginary world where you can play for hours and hours, with a new plot and a new adventure every day.

MATERIALS

•  Leaf pattern (see page 210) •  8 squares wool felt, 12" × 12" each

(various leaf colors)•  Needle and thread•  Sticks and branches

STEP ONE

Using the pattern, cut out eight leaf shapes from the felt. You can reduce or enlarge the pattern, depending on how large or small you would like your house to be.

STEP TWO

Once you have your pieces cut, take two of the leaves of the same color and sandwich them together. Using a blan-ket stitch, sew them together along the sides and top, leaving the bottom edge of the leaf open. Repeat this three more times so that you have four double-sided leaves.

STEP THREE

Lay out three leaves with one on the bottom and the other two layered on top and rotated to either side just a bit.

Tack the bottom leaf and the left top leaf together at the first indentation of both leaves just before the center sec-tion of each leaf, as shown in the photo. Do the same for the right top leaf.

STEP FOUR

Align the open end of the fourth leaf to the open end of the bottommost leaf in your stack. Slide the fourth leaf under the bottom leaf and position them so that the first indents on the left and right sides of the openings align, as shown in the photo. Tack the leaves together at each of these indents. Now fold the three top leaves up like a hinge and form the leaf house into a shape you like. Tack the top leaves to the bot-tom leaf where needed to maintain the

shape. You may also add a few more tacks to the upper leaves to add more strength, and even a few more leaves if you’d like to make a larger structure (although only four are needed to make the basic form).

STEP F IVE

The house is now essentially done. It is a soft house that can be squished down into a bag and then popped up again. If you would like more structure, on your next trip out to the wild, collect a few small sticks and break them to the length of the leaf. Insert them into the open bottom end of each leaf and up to the top point; your construction will instantly become a sturdy little fairy house.
