Witnesses are sought in a Mothers Day accident.
A roadside memorial is growing along the side of the Haney Bypass, as word spreads that a 15-year-old Pitt Meadows girl died after a weekend car crash.
Katie Kirkland was critically injured in an accident early Sunday afternoon, involving two vehicles on the west end of the bypass.
A westbound car collided with an eastbound pickup, and the car subsequently struck a pole in the 223rd Street intersection.
The girl, a passenger in the car, was rushed to hospital, but Ridge Meadows RCMP announced two days later that she had succumbed
to her injuries.“Our heartfelt sympathy goes out
to the family,” said Ridge Meadows RCMP Insp. Dan Splinter.
Meanwhile, the crash is being “actively” investigated by local RCMP traffic unit and the Integrated Crash Analyst Reconstructionist Services to deter-mine its cause, explained RCMP Cpl. Steve Martin.
“What I can tell you is speed and alcohol are not factors,” Martin said, noting a total of four persons were involved between the two vehicles in the crash.
Police are asking for anyone who witnessed the crash, who hasn’t already spoken to officers, to con-tact the Ridge Meadows RCMP at 604-463-6251.

Removing the service saves cash, but leaves kids out in the cold, say parents.ROB SHAW AND COLE [email protected]
The Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows school board recently voted to cancel bus service to its schools, leaving 370 students without a ride beginning in September 2016.
Board chair Mike Murray said the district was facing a $1.68-mil-lion shortfall on its $129-million annual budget, and had to wrestle with whether to increase class sizes for a third consecutive year to save money.
“The choice we made was to not do that, to not increase class size again,
and instead deal with the bus side of things,” said Murray.
The move will save $650,000, which Murray said would count toward $1.34 million in “administrative” savings his district has to find under orders from
the provincial government. After news of the cuts reached
social media, parents wondered how they would get their kids to school safely – especially those in rural areas like Whonnock, which aren’t serviced by public transit.
While there is nothing in B.C. law that requires school boards to provide free bus service, some districts, such as Delta and
Coquitlam, chose to eliminate bus ser-vice in the last two years.
Others, such as Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows, have implemented annual bus fees of $215 per student (although
low-income families are exempt).School trustees say the issue of bus
funding was made worse earlier this year when the provincial budget man-dated B.C.’s 60 school boards find a total of $29 million in administrative savings, and a further $25 million in 2016-17.
Premier Christy Clark has said districts should focus on “low-hanging fruit” through shared service agreements and other back-office effi-ciencies that don’t impact classrooms.
But school boards that cut bus service can apply the savings toward their prov-incially mandated administrative targets.
Bus cuts are a “local decision” for school boards and trustees, said Education Minister Peter Fassbender.
“None of these decisions is easy,” he said. “It would be great to leave it as the
status quo, but that’s not the reality in this day and age.”
The government did change the school transportation funding formula in 2012. Some districts say that has left them with less money, but Fassbender said it gave trustees more flexibility on spend-ing the cash. School districts have also warned they will have to cut teaching
positions and other key servi-ces in order to afford unfunded increases to BC Hydro fees and Medical Service Plan premiums.
“There are potentially thousands of parents whose kids are going to be stranded without the ability to get to school,” said NDP critic Rob Fleming. “Every time the government passes on unfunded cost pressures, something has to give, and now it’s school buses in rural and suburban communities.”

A team from Albion Elementary won a competition in the sport of reading.TROY LANDREVILLE AND HEATHER [email protected]
Maple Ridge’s Bouncy Bookworms parlayed their love of reading into a gold medal finish in the Reading Link Challenge May 6.
The team from Albion Elementary ruled the Grand Challenge held at Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s Langley campus.
The seats on the auditorium for the Grand Challenge were filled with family, friends, and supporters.
The Albion team made up of Jack Hayhoe, Harley McFarlane, Canyon Gudaitis, Diego Llarena, Emilie Bruce, and Cathy Kingsman answered the most skill-testing questions correctly among the 10 competing.
The teams – made up of five members apiece – came from Delta, Maple Ridge, Coquitlam, Surrey, Port Moody, and North Vancouver.
To get to the Grand Challenge, the Bouncy Bookworms had to win their school Reading Link Challenge,
and then library and commun-ity competitions.
“This year we have over 3,000 children participating,” noted emcee Gillian McLeod.
They were on 538 teams from 127 schools around the Lower Mainland.
Albion Elementary teacher-librarian Jim Graham said the journey to the Grand Link Challenge started in January with the Bouncy Bookworms reading six books, completing book reviews, and working on projects on the books.
Then in March they won their inter-school contest that
included six teams consisting of six students each.
After that the Bouncy Bookworms captured the Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows Reading Link Challenge compe-tition on April 1, involving 13 schools from across District 42.
Later in April they placed second at the Fraser Valley competition with 401 teams from 96 Fraser Valley schools participating.
Their second place finish qualified them for the Grand Challenge.
Each year the program par-ticipants in Grades 4 or 5 read a
set of six specific books. In the competitions, they must answer trivia questions based on what they read, working as a team to come up with the right answer.
This year marked the ninth time in 11 years that an Albion Elementary team has won the Maple Ridge Reading Link Challenge, but the first time that one has captured the Grand Challenge.
“There have been many third place finishes in the Fraser Valley, and two years ago a second place Grand Challenge placing, losing in sudden death overtime, but this is our first time winning the entire com-petition,” Graham said, noting that this same group placed fourth at the Grand Challenge last year as Grade 4 students and wanted to improve.
“The kids’ effort was huge,” Graham said. “They probably reread each book five or six times. They created questions, and quizzes, and had older sibling help them. They were tremendously motivated.”
Find out more at www.read-inglinkchallenge.ca.
The program is run jointly by the Fraser Valley Regional Library network, Coquitlam Public Library, the Port Moody Public library, North Vancouver City Library and Surrey Libraries.

The City of Pitt Meadows Public Works Department will be ushing water mains throughout the municipality for approximatelytwelve weeks beginning March 2, 2015. During this time there may be a temporary drop in water pressure or a noticeable discolouration in tap water. To correct problems with milky water, open the cold tap slightly to bleed air from the waterlines. If you experience problems with dirty water, turn on an outside tap and let it run until water clears. The City thanks residents for their patience during this routing maintenance of the water mains. The Fraser Timber Supply Area Cooperative Association (FTSACA) is developing a Pest Management Plan (PMP) under the Integrated Pest Management Act. This plan will describe a vegetation management program using Integrated Pest Management, including the use of herbicides.
The purpose of the PMP is to describe the vegetation management program in the FTSACA chart area in the Fraser Timber Supply Area. Vegetation control methods in this plan include aerial foliar spray, ground foliar spray (including backpack and power nozzle), stem injection (hack and squirt), basal bark sprays, manual girdling, power saw, stem bending and pulling and mechanical site preparation. These treatments will take place within the Fraser Timber Supply Area that contains Crown land designated as forest land within the Chilliwack Forest District extending from the Nesakwatch River drainage on the Canada / US border in the south to the Nahatlatch River drainage in the north. It extends from the Pitt River in the west to the Skagit River in the east. Since the FTSACA chart areas are spread throughout the Chilliwack Forest District, nearby towns include Boston Bar and Hope and the communities of the Fraser Valley. There are numerous dwellings scattered throughout the plan area. Proposed herbicides to be used include Vision, VisionMax, Vantage, Weed-Master (glyphosate), Release MSO, Garlon RTU, Garlon XRT (triclopyr) and Sylgard 309 (siloxylated polyether). This Pest Management Plan will be in effect for a period of five years from the date of approval (approximately 2015 to 2020).
Interested parties may view the Pest Management Plan application in detail at the following location:

Only two more weeks to return referendum ballots.BY COLE [email protected]
With only two weeks go in the Metro Vancouver Transportation and Transit Plebescite, Maple Ridge is slated to be well represented in the final tally of votes.
Across the 24 districts represented in Metro Vancouver, Maple Ridge has the fifth highest rate of returned ballots to registered voters.
Around 42.5 per cent of registered vot-ers in Maple Ridge have returned their
ballots, representing about 23,000 out of 54,000 registered voters.
The only municipalities posting better return rates were the Villages of Anmore, Belcarra, Lions Bay, and the City of North Vancouver..
Meanwhile in Pitt Meadows, 41.4 per cent of voters have returned their ballots.
The plebescite officially ends on May 29 at 8 p.m., but individuals who have yet to receive a voting package in the mail should contact Elections BC in order to be eligible to vote in the mail-in referendum.
An Elections BC referendum station has been temporarily set up in Haney Place Mall – where people can pick up a voting package, submit their package directly,
or request information about the referen-dum.
The referendum regards a proposed 0.5
per cent sales tax increase designed to help fund a $7.5-billion transit plan, pro-posed by the mayors’ council.
Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows would see the addition of a B-Line bus to the new Evergreen Skytrain in Coquitlam, an additional West Coast Express (WCE) train added to the current service, and expanded bus service around the cities.
The WCE, meanwhile, has faced over 100 disruptions in service throughout the last six months, according to a TransLink representative.
TransLink is urging delayed riders to complain to Canadian Pacific Rail, saying it’s CPR’s responsibility to keep the tracks clear.

Thomas Haney student wins Valley’s regional science fair.TROY [email protected]
Ben Chisholm’s project impressed the judges at the Fraser Valley Regional Science Fair, held last month at the University of the Fraser Valley in Abbotsford.
So much so, the Thomas Haney Secondary Grade 8 stu-dent was among three grand prize winners awarded an all-expense trip to the Canada-wide Science Fair (CWSF) in Fredericton, NB.
The CWSF, which runs this week (May 11 to 16) celebrates Canada’s brightest young minds while exploring science, tech-nology, engineering, and math.
The national competition brings together 500 “young sci-entists” showcasing their real world solutions to some of the globe’s most important issues while competing for nearly $1 million in awards, prizes, and scholarships.
Joining 14-year-old Chisholm
in Fredericton is Baneet Braich from Abbotsford Senior Secondary. and Daniel Kanis from Credo Christian School in Langley.
Chisholm’s 14-page report and display, One Man’s Waste is another Man’s Power, focuses on getting energy from alterna-tive and renewable sources.
His experiment shows that it is possible to change the elec-trical production of a microbial
fuel cell by adding different additives to mud samples.
Chisholm, who said he hopes to get a university degree in science, began researching for the project in December, did the experiment in January, and took data for two weeks.
His interest in science started four years ago when he was attending school in England.

ProPosed Changes to Park Land deveLoPment Cost Charge (dCC) ByLawThe City of Pitt Meadows is currently accepting comments on proposed changes to the rates for
the Park Land Development Cost Charge (DCC) Bylaw.
As residential uses are the primary beneficiary of parkland development, parkland DCC’s are collected from developers solely for new residential developments in the community. In
accordance with Provincial legislation, the proposed DCC program itemizes all parkland acquisition and improvement projects that are necessary to support population growth in the City
from new development and that will be funded (in part) by DCC’s.
The last review of the City of Pitt Meadows Park Land DCC Bylaw occurred in 1996.
For a complete Park Land Development Cost Charge Bylaw Change information package, please visit City Hall or www.pittmeadows.bc.ca
Comments on the proposed changes will be accepted until 4:30 pm on June 8, 2015 and then presented to Council for their final consideration prior to adoption of the Bylaw later this year.

Haney Sewing & Sound founder passes away at 87 years of age.COLE [email protected]
Friends and family of Jack Sheppard described the man as many things – a business leader,
community activist, but most who knew him would also say he was a true gentleman.
“He loved his chil-dren, and his City,” said longtime friend Tom Meier.
Sheppard, whose entrepreneurial career began as a door-to-door salesman for the Singer Sewing Company, opened Haney Sewing & Sound in downtown Haney in 1969.
Jack worked at the store until he retired in
1994. His sons, Don and Dave joined the store in ’80 and ’89 respectively.
Business, however, was only one aspect of Jack Sheppard.
He was also an avid runner and commun-ity activist, who was a driving force behind a cherished community event: the Ridge Meadows Home Show.
As news of his passing reached social media, Maple Ridge residents offered their condolences and remembered Jack Sheppard for his commit-ment to the community.
“Thank you Jack for all you have done to make Maple Ridge a great place to call home,” wrote former Maple Ridge mayor Ernie Daykin.
“You will be missed!”A Celebration of Life for Sheppard will be held
at Fraserview Village hall, 22538 116th Ave., next Thursday, May 21 at 4 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian National Institute for the Blind.

Investigation turned over to police: An early morning fire in a house being constructed on River Road, near 207th Street, is believed suspicious and the case has now been turned over to Ridge Meadows RCMP for further investigation. While the blaze destroyed the one home, Maple Ridge fire chief Dane Spence said quick action by firefighters saved three neighbouring homes.

Pro or con, please vote
Tick, tock. Time is running out.
Those in favour of the $7.5-billion Metro Vancouver trans-portation and transit plebiscite and a new transit tax have been very vocal in this spring’s campaign, taking a dog-and-pony show on the road to communities throughout the region and
spending crazy money telling us all why we need to vote “yes” in this mail-in referendum.
Of course, out here in the Valley, that concerted effort has been met with a bit of backlash from some. Consequently, the red “no” signs con-tinue popping up around town and a few opposing restaurants have gone as far to include their views on the bottoms of each bills. That’s just men-tioning a few methods the opponents are using to get their message out.
Bottom line, wherever you fall on this issue, we simply ask two things. Please spend a bit of time and educate yourself on the subject. And,
make sure you vote. Complacency is definitely not the answer.Good news, if you haven’t received your voters package, there’s still
time to request one. But that time is fast running out.More than 1.5 million voting packages were sent out to homes in the
23 affected municipalities back in March, and for those who still don’t have one or have lost theirs, they need to call 1-800-661-8683 before mid-night Friday, May 15.
A few weeks back, Elections BC, which is administering the vote, said about half a million of those ballots had already come back.
In Pitt Meadows, of the 12,849 eligible voters 5,315 (or 41.4 per cent) have actually voted already. Likewise, in Maple Ridge, of the 54,462 eli-gible voters, they’ve already received packages from 23,164 of us (or 42.5 per cent). Those were among the highest returns in the region.
So, here’s that friendly reminder: Elections BC must receive the com-pleted ballots before 8 p.m. on Friday, May 29.
Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows voters, those of you 18 years or older before the deadline day, please make sure to cast your vote. This pro-posed taxation, either way, will significantly impact our future.

Didn’t think you’d be rid of me that easily, didja?
I’m finding retiring to be a difficult bit of work.
First, it was not easy finding the “off” switch. Instead, it seems I am powered through a dimmer switch.
So, instead of turning it off on Friday, my last official day as editor of the Langley Advance and the Maple Ridge & Pitt Meadows TIMES, I just cranked the dimmer switch down as low as it would go.
(Yeah, I know, I heard you at the back over there: “I didn’t think he could get much dimmer!”)
From now on, at least for the time being, penning my Odd Thoughts consti-tutes a week’s work. I am now committed to spending a hard hour or so every week at my keyboard (sometimes – but rarely – as little as 20 minutes, if the muse is hot).
All that is to satisfy the plaintive cries
of readers who professed they would be lost without my maundering thoughts to guide them through harder bits of life’s little bumps and turns.
Or maybe it’s to satisfy the writer’s ego that was threaten-ing to curl up and die within me.
Did those people really call out to me, begging for the generous dollops of wisdom that I am wont to spew forth – or was what I heard just one of the hamsters scratching about in the nether cracks and
crannies of my brain after escaping from its wheel and losing its way?
In any case, it was tremendously easy to agree to continue filling this space from time to time, solely as an opinionated old sod masquerading as a newspaper colum-nist.
What was far harder was clearing my office of the junk that had piled up through 38 years of reporting, photograph-
ing, editing, and whatever else I might have done in all that time.
It didn’t seem like it had been all that long... until I started opening the files and the drawers – and the drawers of files – filled with accumulated memories.
Some of the memories were found in boxes that had not been touched in more than a decade.
One of my favourite boxes contained trinkets and doodads that PR flaks used to attach to their press releases, partly as bribes and partly just to get my attention (and that of the dozens of other editors who received similar packages).
Most of the stuff was really ridiculous: a plastic yellow bowling pin, a foam rubber locomotive, a sealed beer can filled with air (I’m thinking it was probably air, as it was far too light to be filled with beer, but I never opened it, because then it would have become just another empty beer can).
If all the boxes and drawers and file cabinets were filled with that kind of junk, clearing out the office would have been
easy: just throw it all in the dumpster and be done with it.
But it doesn’t work that way. There were letters and cards, the most
touching ones, culled from the many people who thanked me for... what?... really just doing my job over the past few decades. But I must admit that it was a rewarding job, and those cards and let-ters – and the phone calls that work like ambrosia on the brains cells – are proof of the rewards.
That, of course, reminds me of some of the other phone calls and cards and letters (and threats of lawsuits), saved because they were instructive of the needs and sensibilities of people in the community, reminders of the gravity of the editor’s position and responsibilities.
And others were saved because they were so ridiculous that they’re still good for a laugh.
It’s all history now, some of it saved for posterity, most of it buried in time..Read Matthew Claxton’s Painful Truth online

Dear Editor,The school board’s
decision to cancel bus services as of September 2016 [Cuts force board to make tough call on school buses, TIMES, April 9] is both shortsighted and irresponsible.
It goes without say-ing, east Maple Ridge is overwhelmed with the number housing developments being built, so many families are moving in with
few services, includ-ing schools. Thus Albion and Alexander Robinson were burst-ing at the seams.
And since it was unlikely a new school would be built to ease the burden on those two schools, the board decided to redraw the boundaries to fill up the underutilized schools of Whonnock, Webster’s Corners and Blue Mountain.
For some students,
their catchment school is now 10 kilometres away. But at least they could take a bus. Now those students will no longer be able to get to their school without someone driv-ing them.
We will be back to where we started: some schools at over capacity, with others underutilized, because I don’t know too many parents who travel east to get to work.
Parents are going to drop their kids at the schools they can get them to, and likely those will be the schools to the west.
And what about those parents who rely on the bus to get their kids to and from school because they
work? Do we now expect those parents to reduce their work, if that’s even possible, or quit their jobs because they had the crazy expectation that their kids could access local catchment schools?
Some may argue it’s the parents’ respon-sibility to get kids to school. But do we not, as a civilized society, share in the respon-sibility of ensuring all kids have the oppor-tunity to an education?
Cancelling bus ser-vices is a fast and easy way to save some money, but it is shortsighted, plus it will have far reaching implications for many families in our district.

Dear Editor,I see the implementation of garbage pickup
by the City [Maple Ridge eying trash options, TIMES online, April 22] as yet another cash grab – another addition to our taxes that will only get more expensive year by year, by way of increased wages, etc.
I am quite happy to take my three or four cans of garbage to the transfer station once every four to six weeks at a cost of $15 – nowhere near the $275 as reported.
My wife and I take the few minutes of extra time to recycle as much as possible. Our kitchen scraps go into our backyard compost to top up our garden beds.
I realize that larger families may need to go more often, but not everyone should have to pay the same fee to subsidize those people’s needs.
And yes, we also have private collectors whose three or four trucks go by once a week for their customers, but it’s only once a week, not every day.
Chuck Thomson, Maple Ridge
Garbage pickup plan unfair
Dear Editor,A hypocrite is defined as someone who says
they have particular moral beliefs, but behaves in way that shows these are not sincere.
The BC Liberals don’t like that the citizens of Burnaby North and Maple Ridge-Mission are attempting to recall their MLAs because they are unhappy with their job performance, but the B.C. Liberal government has proposed legisla-tion, Bill 11, that would allow the minister of education to replace elected school trustees, when he deems it to be in the public’s best interest, with a hand-picked administrator.
A successful recall campaign would trigger a by-election in which the MLA is free to partici-pate – not so for elected school trustees when they are replaced.
I think the definition fits the situation.Catherine Dixon, Maple Ridge

Grounding choppers win-winDear Editor,
Thank you Alouette Field Naturalists! Thank you B.C. Hydro! [BC Hydro will stop flying choppers over sandhill crane habitat, April 16, TIMES] A win-win for all.

Dear Editor,The family income splitting, which is sup-
posed to help “average” families, unfortunately does just the opposite. I just tried a few calcula-tions: A family earning under $40,000 gets noth-ing, $45,000 gets you a rebate of $73, and for $50,000 you get $423 back.
Single parents will also get zero, since they cannot split income. If you are a single mom, you are out of luck to share in this tax bonanza.
But anybody earning over $80,000 will get the maximum of $2,000.
The cost of this hand-out is $2.2 billion of your taxes. Is this how we want to share $2.2 billion of government revenues? The families who need it most get next to nothing, and the ones who need it least get the max?
It is a wasteful, regressive tax.Maria Raynolds, Maple Ridge

A homegrown music duo hits the stage at Chances this weekend to kick off their summer tour.ERIC [email protected]
For Brett Johnson, the best part of touring with his band is “the traveling time” with the band in the vehicle.
“We have a lot of fun on the road,” he said.
Raised in Maple Ridge, Brett and his brother Trent are the siblings behind the country music outfit, The Johnson Brothers.
The brothers spent a chunk of last summer travelling and promoting their new single (Get Your) Feel Good On, a song which Brett said “did very well across the country on country radio stations.”
After the tour, the group took a little break, slowed down on some shows, and “kind of regrouped,” he explained.
Now, as the band marks its 14th year of existence, Brett said the band is preparing once again to hit the road, beginning with a show this Saturday, May 16, at Chances Maple Ridge.
“We’re pretty much on the road straight through to the end of August,” Brett told The TIMES.
The tour is a Western Canada trip, and the band is “playing everywhere from Calgary, to Sun Peaks [near Kamloops]... all over the place,” he added.
And while last year’s tour
saw the group play at rodeos and smaller venues, “this year we’re playing a lot more festi-vals and big club dance halls,” explained Brett.
Does he have a preference when it comes to performance venues?
“Each one is very different,” Brett explained. “We found last year with the rodeos, the
crowds we had were good: around 500 to 600, and it’s a different energy with each crowd. We find the smaller audi-ences are a little more personal, and the bigger audiences, we get to treat more like
a party atmosphere.”So it only seems appropri-
ate that the band is billing this summer’s tour as the Who’s Here To Party? tour, which is also a title of one of their songs.
As for what people can expect when the boys play their hometown show at Chances?
“It’s going to be with the
full band, a mixture of original songs, and some of our favour-ite cover tunes that we like to do,” Brett elaborated.
Also in the works for this summer is a plan to do some songwriting and work with fel-low Canadian country band, The Road Hammers.
‘We’re kind of venturing out and doing some different stuff,” Brett said.
When he’s not recording, touring, or performing with the band, Brett also teaches guitar at a music school in Abbotsford, and helps “younger artists get into the music indus-try as well.”
No matter what they’ve done in the past, or where their music career takes them in the future, Brett said one thing will remain the same.
“Maple Ridge will always be home.”
The Brothers take the stage Friday at Chances, 22710 Lougheed Hwy., at 9:30 p.m.

Lions Clubpics found
A cherished album of photos, which flew from the open trunk of a moving vehicle last month, was returned by an anonymous Good Samaritan after an article appeared in The TIMES.
Lorie Ouellette, president of the Pitt Meadows Lions Club, was passing by the Lions Den clubhouse last week, when she noticed a bag hanging from one of the doors.
Inside that bag was the largely unscathed album of historical Lions Club pictures that fell from her mov-ing vehicle.
“The Lions would like to say a big thank you to our anonymous Good Samaritan,” she said.

Tons of invaders removed: Members of the Kanaka Education and Environmental Parntership Society’s recently joined with Metro Vancouver Parks and two teams of UBC students to pull several tons of invasive ivy from an area of Kanaka Creek, upstream from the Bell-Irving Fish Hatchery.

Student entrepreneurs: Grade 5 through 7 students at Maple Ridge
Christian Secondary recently hosted a Young Entrepreneur Fair, the results of three months
of preparation and hard work. The kids learned how to conduct market
research, create a product, write a a business plan and take their finished product
to the consumers. Kendra Banbury (right), a Grade 5 student, explained the strategy
behind her floral business called “Kendra’s Creations.” “I wanted to make necklaces at
first,” she said, “But I realized that they were going to take too long to make and be too
expensive. Then, I saw chalk paint at the store. I got the idea to paint mason jars with
chalk paint and sell flowers. I learned that kids might not buy flowers, but adults might.”
In the meantime, Owen Barber (right), a Grade 6 student, created a business called
Owen’s Epic Sling Shots.“I had to reduce the price from $6 to $5
each,” Owen said. “When the Grade 3 boys came, I was surprised at how quickly the
slingshots sold out. It was fun.”Each student will donate a portion of their
profit to a charity of their choice.“The Young Entrepreneur Fair gives our
students the opportunity to gain real business experience by developing,
marketing, and selling their own products,” said Blaine Unger, a Grade 6- 7 teacher.
“It was great to see our students apply their learning with such energy.”

This past Friday, the new Rexall drugstore located at Haney Place Mall in Maple Ridge, celebrated its grand opening in a special way.
As part of the celebration, Paul Chidley, div-isional vice president of Rexall, was on site to make a $30,000 donation on behalf of the com-pany to Camp Goodtimes here in Maple Ridge, through the Canadian Cancer Society, BC and Yukon division.
The money came from the Rexall Foundation, which store manager JD Dhooria said is “our social and corporate responsibility arm.”
The foundation donates money to children’s charities in communities in which the company has operations, he elaborated. “The money is used directly for the betterment of sick kids.”
Funds for the dona-tions come fundraising events the store holds throughout the year, Dhooria added.
The store, which employs 24 people, held a soft opening about two weeks ago, but this weekend marked its official opening, and Dhooria said the response from the com-munity so far has been awesome.
“We had a really good, really busy, grand opening weekend, and we’re glad to be here,” he said. “We have a long lease, and we’re look-ing forward to being here for many years in this community.”
As a side note on the business franchise front, over in West Maple Ridge keep an eye out for burger chain Fatburger, that’s currently setting up shop at Westgate Centre, 20398 Dewdney Trunk Rd., as well as Bodhi Natural Market, located at 11920 207 St.

Walmart is on its way to Maple Ridge.
The company picked up 13 former Target stores and a distribu-tion centre in Canada, includ-ing the location at Haney Place Mall.
Walmart plans to spend $350 million to acquire and renovate the properties, and expects to hire 3,400 workers for the stores.
The deal is still sub-ject to approval from Canada’s Competition Bureau, as per Target
Canada’s exit agree-ment.
“Once we learned of the closure of Target Canada I personally reached out to Walmart Canada to ensure that they knew about our com-munity and the opportunity to connect with a marketplace eager for new
shopping opportun-ities,” said Mayor Nicole Read. “This is a great outcome for the community.”> More at mrtimes.com,

The nation-wide Ride for Lyme stopped at Haney Place Mall Monday.
TROY [email protected]
Debbie Zimbaro said her life took a turn for the worse in the sum-mer of 2013 when she was bitten by an insect smaller than a poppy seed.
Since the tick bite, the Maple Ridge mom of two grown children has had to deal with a barrage of health issues, all the result of, she said, contracting Lyme disease.
Lyme-infected ticks have been found across Canada and symptoms can some-times occur years after a tick bite.
Just some of the common symptoms include chronic head-aches, sweat/chills, fatigue, sore joints and muscles, trem-ors, neck creaks and stiffness, numbness, blurred vision, light and sound sensitivity, digestive problems, and problems with memory, speech, and balance.
Zimbaro is one of the “Lyme Warriors,” people who have con-tracted Lyme disease from tick bites.
“I don’t think enough people know what Lyme disease is,” Zimbaro said on Monday afternoon, as she helped set up tables outside of
Haney Place Mall to welcome two young cyclists who are on a cross-country journey for awareness and funds as part of the Ride for Lyme.
Zimbaro describes living with Lyme dis-ease as “terrible.”
“It’s very debilitat-ing. You never know from one minute to the next what’s going to happen to your body,” she added. “The symp-toms are vast and varied.”
In her case, she said there “about a
hundred” symptoms.
After being bitten,
Zimbaro started to feel sick and saw her family doctor, who thought she contracted a virus.
“He kept saying you have a virus and then it escalated to, ‘There’s not really anything wrong with you, this has been going on too long,’” Zimbaro said. “It feels like the worst case of flu that you’ve ever imagined. It got to the point where, by Christmastime, I literally thought I was dying of a terminal ill-ness.”
After visiting sev-eral doctors, Zimbaro underwent an MRI.
Lesions were found on her brain.
The only way Zimbaro could tell she was bitten was from a tiny scab she found on the top of her head.
“I never thought anything of it, even after I started getting sick because I didn’t know anything myself about Lyme disease, and that’s why people need to be educated, because the more people who are aware, the sooner you know you’ve been bitten, and you can go onto antibiotics straight away,” Zimbaro said.
One of the Ride for Lyme supporters, Karen Marchand, said the ride is about rais-ing awareness and funds for research because, she said, “the government is not sup-porting us in our quest to find the answers to our health challenges.”
Daniel Corso’s and Tanner Cookson’s
friend Adelaine Nohara has Lyme disease and on her behalf, the two St. Catharines, Ont. natives are cycling across Canada with the goal of raising $100,000 for CanLyme, a foundation that pro-vides research funding, raising awareness, and communicating with government public health agencies.
The Adelaine Project is an 8,000 km bicycle journey across Canada.
Early Monday mor-ning, May 11, Corso, 23, and Cookson, 22, departed on their bicycles from Victoria with a goal of arriving at St. John’s, Nfld., by July 8.
Along the way, they plan to make stops at news stations, schools, and events to meet with doctors, polit-icians, victims and the general public to pro-mote their mission.
To donate to the cause online or learn more about the Adelaine Project, visit www.rideforlyme.ca.

Maple Ridge’s Cody Osborn competed at the Junior Pan-American championships in Cuba.
TROY [email protected]
Cody Osborn pinned down an opportunity to wrestle for Canada at the Junior Pan-American Championships.
In the Greco-Roman style, the 18-year-old Westview Secondary grad topped the boys 66-kilo-gram class at the 2015 ASICs Junior/Senior Canadian Wrestling Championships, held earlier this year at Brock University in St. Catharines, Ontario.
In a three-wrestler division, Osborn won gold after beating Nicholas Wilson 8-0 and outlasting Lucas Hoffert 11-8.
With the gold-medal came the opportunity to compete for Canada in Greco Roman wrestling at the Pan-Am meet in Havana, Cuba on May 6.
In his one and only match, Osborn lost to Edwar Arvenis Polanco from the Dominican Republic.
“I didn’t get to do a whole lot,” Osborn said. “It’s a new style for me and it’s hard to adapt. I felt I came in prepared but I got caught on a move, the gut wrench, and once he had me it was all over.”
Greco-Roman wrestling involves only the upper body on both offence and defence. It’s a disci-pline that’s quite unfamiliar to Osborn, who wrestled freestyle at
Westview and this past year as a freshman with the University of Alberta Golden Bears in Edmonton.
However, the experience as a whole was good for Osborn, who had a chance to train with the national junior team but also wit-nessed some of the poverty that exists in Havana.
In the days leading up to the Pan-Am meet, Osborn was in full fundraising mode in his bid to don Canada’s colours in Cuba.
“With the money raised I have
aspirations to medal at the Pan-Am Championships and to pos-sibly take home a gold,” Osborn wrote, in his makeachamp fundraising page (makeachamp.com/codyosborn). “The money I raise will go towards wrestling gear that Canada Wrestling will provide, as well as the cost of fly-ing to Cuba, competing at the Pan-Am Championships, and taking part in a very influential training camp. All these things cost a lot of money but will help develop me as a wrestler and give me an experience unlike any other.”
Qualifying from junior nationals came as something of a surprise to Osborn, who said it would be an honour to represent his country in Cuba.
“It would be great to represent Team Canada and have my fam-ily cheering me at home,” Osborn said prior to the meet. “I’ve never wrestled on the international stage and to see how I stack up against the rest of the world would be awesome.”
The junior Pan-Am event includ-ed freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestlers and ran from May 6 to 8.
