OpenStreetMap

● Webmap.● Database containing vector map data.● Freedom

Why OpenStreetMap?

● Many of the available maps are not free.● Few of them are free (as beer) but not free (as speech).● Difficulties to get vector data to draw custom maps.● Users can improve OpenStreetMap.● OpenStreetMap can be updated easily.● Commercially available maps may occasionally

contain purposefully added errors.● Almost same spirit as in case of Open Government

Data (OGD) Platform India (data.gov.in)

Page 5: Mapping efforts in an unsurveyed land - An OpenStreetMap experiment at Koorachundu Village Panchayat.

Why OpenStreetMap?

● Much of the areas in this world remains not mapped

properly until now.

● Can draw maps for innovative uses and needs.

● Free services delivered by corporates could be stopped,

or made paid service – But that usually doesn't occur

with the services delivered by communities.
