Good job, Yanko. Very amusing and quite thoughtful, with a balanced mix of “flat” and “deeper”stereotypes.By the way, the best evidence of the existence of such stereotypes -in one or another way- is somecertain comments and statements here…One should remind them that your work obviously is a funny but thoughtprovoking illustration and doesnot claim to be an accurate political or sociopsychological postion paper. Evidently, some people seemnot to be aware of the difference. Nevertheless, the rest of us congatulate you for your nice work, which did let us smile and laugh. Dispite such stereotypes we hope to be able to build an united Europeof friendship.

Congrats and Greetings from Athens/Greece!

I don’t think the eurocrats can hear you, at least not those living outside your head.

@ Yanko:

“Bratko” Yanko, in the “world according to Bulgaria” map you weren’t honest … FYRoMacedonia“Greek Slavs” ??? I think that the typical Bulgarian view of them is “Non EU Bulgarians with personalitydisorder”

Хитър си ти Петре, but I think irony rarely has anything to do with honesty. Are you really unableto decode the label? :)

Hitre Petrevski says: Jul 11, 2013 at 4:41 pm

Well, Slavi Trifonov-ski (hehehe) here is being BOTH honest AND ironic. Wouldn’t yousay?

PS: If you make a “the world according to FYRMakedonians write Bulgaria as“Crnomorska Makedonija”, Greece as “Egejcka Makedonija”, Serbia as “Sredno-DunavskaMakedonija”, Albania, Croatia, Montenegro and BiH as “Jadracka Makedonija”, Austria as“Gorno-Dunavska Makedonija”, Italy as “Za-Jadracka Makedonija” and Antarctica as“Pingvinovska Makedonia”.

Ehm…. the one with the Greek stereotypes is almost all wrong…. there’s no way a Greek made it.Most of the stereotypes are mixed up, and some don’t exist at all…

Yanko Tsvetkov says: Jul 10, 2013 at 5:59 pm

Suggestions?

Reply

Marie says: Jul 12, 2013 at 9:50 am

As a greek I wouldn’t say that we have a “retards” stereotype about Bulgarians…Probablythey are considered to be criminals..and for Romanians the same(yeah, plus the draculastuff+ heavy drinkers)…And for the Albanians I would add a “ta qifsha land”( i don’t know Ifthe spelling is correct).. In fact the majority of young greeks know this typical bad albanianword and use it often for fun or when they want to impersonate an Albanian..

lol,the world acording to romanians.

Reply

skaarj says: Feb 10, 2013 at 2:19 pm

Oh, and please don’t use that “numa-numa” (in Romanian it means “only-only”), it has no connectionwith absolutely nothing between romanian borders. “manelist (gypsy music lover) government” worksbetter.

Reply

skaarj says: Feb 10, 2013 at 2:15 pm

Yea, that would be funny. Three versions – one according to the gypsies living in Romania, oneaccording to the romanian-gipsies genetic mix that you see in the newspapers stealing and killing in ourown government and across Europe, and one according to the true romanians, those that invented theelectricity (Tesla), the jet engine (henry coanda), the insuline, the antirabic vaccine, the rocket theory(herman oberth) and so on. That might be interesting. Also – where’s microsoft headquarters? thesecond language spoken there is romanian.

Tesla was Serbian. Btw, I’m also Romanian, but let’s give credit where it’s due, shall we ?

Reply

alphadesigner says: Feb 10, 2013 at 3:14 pm

@skaarj I don’t know about true Romanians but you sound like a racist to me. While born inSibiu, Hermann Oberth was German and Tesla was Serbian. But most of all, this is not a projectwhich sings praises to any nation, so why should I take all those things into account, while allother maps make fun of everybody else? It wouldn’t be very fair, would it?

Reply

TomClancy says: Feb 11, 2013 at 4:28 pm

@alphadesigner Well Nikola Tesla was born in Smiljan, Austrian Empire which is Croatiatoday to Serbian parents. But anyways… dude or chick whatever you are, you are doing a good job on these maps!Keep it up!

Hi Yanko, can you make a map of Europe according to the Romanians ?

Reply

Mzungu says: Feb 2, 2013 at 2:36 pm

Why can you by a print of all except for the Africa According to USA map?

Reply

Yanko Tsvetkov says: Feb 3, 2013 at 10:30 pm

The African map got deleted by Zazzle and I’m not exactly aware why. However, there is anupdated of the entire series coming in about a month, and the newly updated African map will beback again. If you’re in a hurry, you can get it following this link: http://bit.ly/XR09AX

I sincerely doubt that many of these were made by people from the respective countries…. forcountries like Italy, Switzerland and Germany, many of the cited sterotypes seem more like apop-culture mediated image of what OTHERS think THEY think than the real native jokes or bigotry.

The Mapping Stereotypes project is not an exercise in statistics, if that’s what you meant. It’s asatirical map project. You can find out more about critical response, including the countries youmentioned, here: http://alphadesigner.com/press/

Satire is humor that plays on reality. Most of these maps are far from reality. They don’tin any way represent the misconceptions of the given country about the outside world. Ifanything, these maps reflect their creator’s misconceptions about other countries’misconceptions.

Reply

alphadesigner says: Jan 25, 2013 at 4:59 pm

@skyeee If my work didn’t target real issues or misinterpreted them in the way yousuggest, Stern magazine in Germany wouldn’t feature it as Satire of the Year and Iwouldn’t have a book in German coming next month. Corriere della Sera in Italywouldn’t have featured them on its front page either.

alphadesigner says: Jan 25, 2013 at 5:10 pm

@skyeee Oh, it wouldn’t be a bad idea for you to stop assuming I am an American, itwill clear a lot of your own misconceptions. :)
