Abstract
Mapping the Footsteps of History is a Web 2.0 geospatial mashup* tool that will allow users to interactively generate composite maps of historical battlefields sites with Google Earth’s satellite imagery.
– It is also a digital database resource of battlefields maps which dates correlate as closely to the time of the battle as possible.
This unique historical perspective will:
- create an enhanced digital then and now experience
- create a more comprehensive experience and a broader context of the battlefield
- serve as a resource for amateur historians, amateur cartographers, and battle enthusiasts
“…a mashup is a web application that combines data from more than one source into a single integrated tool…”- Wikipedia
- Create a single mapping API (application programmer interface) using JavaScript to overlay the two maps.
- Build a map database using JavaScript
Proposed Technology

– David Ramsey Collection is a close example with over 15,000 maps in its database
