Editors Letter....

Spring is in the air, or is it! At the time of me writing this editorial

the weather forecast was still bitter

cold and more threat of snow on the

way. Did you know that Winter ends

with March, and the arrival of Spring

begins on the 20th March.

March can feel either wintry or springy,

with as many blustery days as mild

sunny days; lets hope for the latter this

Spring. I'm looking forward to

photographs of the first spring lambs

from Jill Carr at Harvester Farm,

hopefully in future issues she will be

sharing them with you all.

Mothers Day, Sunday March 14th.

Plenty of gifts to think about, a gift

voucher from Posh Frocks, flowers

from Fountain Court Florist of

Epworth , a special meal at one of the

local pubs or a cream tea at Jonathon

David's of Epworth. The choice is

yours! Remember to shop local and

support your local businesses.

Leaves me to say have a lovely March,

enjoy Mothering Sunday and enjoy the

read.

Best Wishes

North Isle of Axholme

Photographic Competition 2010 An open photographic competition is being

launched to promote tourism in the North Isle

of Axholme. The area to the north of the M180

encompasses the towns and villages of

Crowle & Ealand, Luddington, Eastoft, Keadby,

Althorpe, Amcotts & Garthorpe. It is an

area often overlooked by tourists but contains a

wealth of heritage and natural interest to

the visitor and local alike, including;

· Crowle Moors – which as part of the

Humberhead Peatlands NNR is the largest

area of raised bog wilderness in lowland Britain and

where one might see Nightjars,

Marsh Harriers and numerous rare insects and

plants.

· Crowle Church and Stone – the church one of

the oldest in the Isle of Axholme

contains the Crowle Stone, a rare Saxon Cross

shaft with a runic inscription

possibly dating to the 8th or 9th century. The theme of the photographic competition is to

illustrate what element of the North Isle of

Axholme that has inspired you or might inspire

visitors to explore this interesting area of

North Lincolnshire, be it animal, vegetable or

mineral. The competition will be divided into

age classes and is open to all. The closing date for

the competition is 31st May 2010. Full

information including details of how to enter may

be found at www.crowle.org/photocomp. The winners will be announced at the 113th

Crowle Show in June.

The Isle of Axholme Family

History Society was treated to a different

sort of talk at their last meeting. Sue Grafton

called her talk ‗Stitching up the Family‘. She

brought with her three magnificent embroidered

hangings. Each consisted of a 4 inch squares on a

burgundy background denoting an aspect of her

family history. For instance, a pair of fighting cocks

commemorated a less respectable ancestor, while

a magnificent ram‘s head indicated a farming

branch. Similarly a group of people standing by a

boat, ancestors who emigrated. The quality of the work was remarkable, and it had

taken her ten years to complete the three hanging

panels. It was difficult to believe she was not a

professional embroiderer. Many questions were

asked of her after her talk and members took

advantage of the chance to inspect the hangings at

close quarters. The next meeting is on March 25th

when the speaker will be Angus Townley on‘ The

Hind Family of Crowle. Meetings are held on the

4th Thursday of the month except for August and

December at the Methodist Schoolroom, High St.

Epworth, at 7-30.

The Belton Autumn Club has enjoyed

another successful year maintaining the

membership and even gaining one or two new

ones. The Club continues to meet in the Belton

Playing Pavilion each Thursday afternoon from 2

pm until 4 pm. The membership fee is only £5 a

year and anyone over 55 is welcome to come

along. Members always a enjoy a variety of card

games: some go for their scrabble whilst others

like UNO.

News, News, News...

There is always a Raffle and a game of Bingo ends

each session. A very enjoyable feature has been the

monthly visits to the Mallard Inn for a three course

lunch at only £5.25. Attempts to get an outing off

the ground was not successful but there may

well be other attempts in the future. The Club

enjoyed their Christmas Lunch back in December

but the bad weather meant that two meetings had

to be cancelled. Best Wishes Colin Ella

Crowle Colts was established in

1992 and is situated on Godnow

Flower Club Report To commemorate the 50th anniversary of NAFAS,

a flower festival was staged in Westminster Abbey

in May 2009. Wendy was fortunate enough to

attend this memorable event, entitled ― Rejoice‖.

She shared her experience by bringing her DVD

memento of the occasion for us to watch. We are

grateful to George for coming along and providing

the equipment and expertise which enabled

us to do this. The DVD content was short but

packed with shots of the beautiful surroundings

of the Abbey, adorned with flower arrangements,

exhibited by NAFAS members from throughout

the country. What a wonderful way of celebrating

50 years of flower clubs. Epworth & District

Flower Club is 50 years old in March 2011.

The business side of the Annual General Meeting

revealed that Debbie has planned a forthcoming

year of exciting meetings, events and workshops.

The new programme starts at the Stephen Jones

Community Hall , Haxey on Monday 8th March, at

7.30pm, with a demonstration by

Margaret Kingswood from Wakefield,

entitled ―TOYS FOR THE BOYS‖.

I love my Mum and Easter Eggs!

My Mum and Dad live many miles away, but for many years I have sent my mother a special card on Moth-

ers Day. Mothering Sunday, to give it the correct title, falls on 14th March. It used to be the day when

those in service were free to go home to their mothers and their mother Church.

Nowadays it has changed. We have changed too by holding a different, but family friendly form of worship.

CHATS stands for Church At The School. We start at 10.30am in Belton All Saints Church of England

Primary School. Mum can have a bit of a lie in before the family brings her to Church in School to worship

and receive some flowers.

Three weeks later, it‘s Easter Day. Worship at 11am. For many people, Easter is just a holiday of choco-

late and a time to relax. That‘s great! We need time to rest. So why get up to come to Church?

There is a spiritual dimension to all of us and our spirits need refreshing just as much as our bodies. That

is exactly what Jesus can do for us. He reaches the parts that other people cannot reach. He is a specialist

in revival. He is present whenever we gather to worship.

I invite you to come and discover just how much God loves you on Mothers Day and/or Easter Day. No

pressure, no hassle. Just come along, enjoy the celebrations and be totally refreshed by our living God!

The Psalmist wrote, ―Taste and see that the Lord is good‖.

The current priorities that the Neighbourhood Team are concentrating on

in the Central Ward are:- Kings Head Croft Car Park and the Thurlow, Epworth;- Vehicle

Nuisance & Anti-Social Behaviour. As a result of work by police and

partnership agencies including Safer Neighbourhood Team, there

has been a reduction in that we have not received calls to the police

regarding this location and early indications from Safer

Neighbourhood show that the monitoring forms circulated have

also resolved this priority. Those persons and vehicles have been

moved to other locations where they were given permission to

gather with strict conditions not to abuse this. Stool Close Road, Belton – has been subjected to reports of anti-

social behaviour and neighbour disputes and reports of crime.

There is a neighbourhood watch group for the area, who together

with other partnership agencies are working together to reduce the calls for service

to the area and to identify and deal with any offences both criminal and civil and to

increase the residents‘ quality of life. The Neighbourhood Watch group are also

actively seeking ways to reduce crime and have taken advice on how to prevent crime from CCTV, to the use of

Smartwater. Belton Pavilion, Belton – the Pavilion although a well used and frequented facility in the village, appears to still

suffer at the hands of those who do not appreciate this facility and the cost involved. There is a small minority

who do not respect this and find it a place to congregate and in some cases cause damage. The Neighbourhood

team and other officers covering the Isle will be patrolling the facility and will actively be addressing these

concerns. The times can vary from 6pm onwards and no particular day. Anyone with any information should

contact the police, and those persons identified will be dealt with.

You can contact Humberside Police on 0845 60 60 222 for non-emergency calls. If you feel uncomfortable in

calling the police with information about crime, then please consider contacting Crimestoppers on 0800 555

111. Crimestoppers is an independent charity working to fight crime. They can also be joined

on Twitter, Facebook and Bebo or if you go onto the Crimestoppers website you can also fill our an on-line

form. When contacting Crimestoppers you do not have to give your name and you may be eligible for a cash

reward.

Working with Pc Tina Starbuck is your Police Community Support Officer Stewart PEARSON, who regularly

patrols the Central area of the Isle and will be happy to discuss any community issues with you. Please feel free

to stop and speak with him or alternatively contact either of us via 0845 60 60 222.

The police station at Epworth also provides a front counter service for two days a week, Mondays and

Thursdays, between 9am and 3pm. Please note that the Police Surgery which is held at Haxey Library on the

First Monday of each month has for the present time been dis-continued it is felt that in it‘s current format that

the surgery is not being facilitated as we would like hence it is under review and details of the new style surgery

will be published shortly. The date and location for the next Neighbourhood Action Team meeting will be

held at Belton Village Hall on Tuesday 9th March 2010.

Sir Cornelius Vermuyden

In Axholme back in sixteen twenty-six

King Charles and Vermuyden made a fix

To reclaim land on the western waste

They worked with more than seemly haste

They moved in rough-shod and uninvited

Against this injustice Isle folk united

They battled hard, they battled long

But the Dutchman‘s drainage still went on

In a great rush many drains were made

Fowlers and fishermen were dismayed

To see their livelihoods taken away

A matter in which they had no say

Vermuyden‘s scheme was all too clear

Get the job done and disappear

He took a huge share of reclaimed land

And properties galore came into his hand

Time saw this vain man‘s ventures fail

His farming foundered and he turned tail

He made his escape with his ill-earned pile

Yet never again lived in any great style

His Axholme digging had made him a

Knight

An honour to which he had no right

He got his desserts in a debtor‘s jail

And died a poor man, old and pale

Farming in the Isle at Harvester Farm Epworth. The weather has dictated many of our activities on the farm this month. The

sheep have been moved to fresh grazing ensuring that they have plenty of

good grass, so that they are in the best condition ready for lambing. Many of

the ewes are looking fairly round so hopefully we will have lots of lambs in the

next 6-7 weeks .The rams have been returned to the a paddock nearer the

farm and have settled into a more quieter way of life (no more stress from all

those ―women‖!!), and seem to be enjoying each others company again after 2 months with all the ewes.

The cattle have had their annual visit from the foot-trimmer, Marcus, who spent a very busy day carrying

out essential treatment on all the cows and the bull making sure that all their hooves were free from any

infections, then cutting and grinding back any excess growth. We had very few problems and hopefully we

should be free from any foot problems for the rest of the year.

It has been a busy month in the cattle yards as we have had 2 new arrivals. Firstly, Twiggy gave birth to a

little black heifer, she is a very protective and carrying mum, much to the annoyance of the twins who

wanted to play, only to get a biff from mum if they came too close. Secondly Buttermilk (aka Butters) gave

birth to the most beautiful ginger bull calf who already has‖ attitude‖ as he struts around. All the calves

are now running about in a ―gang‖ spending their time either drinking, sleeping or getting up to mischief

e.g. sticking our heads through the gates and blowing bubbles in the water-trough.

The Dexter beef sales have been keeping us extremely busy – I can now identify a sirloin steak from a

rump steak with my eyes closed. It is very satisfying to receive all the compliments from our customers

who are enjoying their meat. Best Wishes Jill Carr

The Isle of Axholme Where You Live Your Local History

Adapted by Anthony Catherall

THE SAXONS AND SCANDINAVIANS IN THE ISLE OF AXHOLME

By the end of the 4th century the Roman Empire was under attack in Eastern Europe. Troops were withdrawn from exposed limbs of the Empire to defend the centre of the Empire. Roman soldiers finally left Britain in 410 A.D. thus leaving Britain unprotected against any invaders. Angles, Saxons, Jutes and Frisians from North Germany, Denmark and Holland had been raiding the east coast during the Roman occupation. Now the Romans had gone, the way was open for invasion and settlement by them. They used the waterways of eastern England for an easy passage into inner England. Many appear to have settled in the Isle of Axholme. The best evidence of this is pro-settlement with the place name ending ‖ton‖ meaning farmstead and ―ham‖ meaning a homestead or village such as Burnham, Belton, Luddington and Owston Ferry. The name Axholme is derived from two Anglo-Saxon words Axel meaning town and holme meaning island. The name Epworth comes from the Saxon name Heapeurde with Heape meaning a small hill and urde meaning a farm. As the Anglo-Saxon settlement intensified so small kingdoms were set up. The Isle of Axholme was a frontier area between the Kingdoms of Northumbria to the north and Mercia to the south and the area has been described as ―a common theatre of contention and bloodshed‖. In 653 Penda, King of Mercia passed through the Isle on his way to invade Northumbria then ruled by Edwin. A great battle was fought at Hatfield where Edwin was routed and killed. Nine years later Penda again attacked Northumbria. This time King Oswald of Northumbria was killed. It seems possible that he actually died at Burnham. For connected with him is the story of the Holy Well. Afterwards the well was reputed to have healing properties and at annual feast times children and others were brought to be healed. The Churches at Crowle and Althorpe are dedicated to Oswald.

Now & Then – Then & Now N0 11 Anthony Catherall

This month and every month; see Epworth in by gone days and compare to today‘s images !

Fred Oliver standing outside the ‗Ellers Tavern‘ West End with his Niece Lilly Oliver from Hull circa 1933. Fred‘s wife Lillian always wanted the pub and after taking over from Nellie Shipley, the Oliver‘s stayed

10 years from 1929- 1939, then handing over to Louise & Jack Swash. The ‗Tap Room‘ with Long-saddles seats was on the right and the private sitting room to the left. Daughter Edith Oliver was the

main stay behind the bar whilst younger sister Nina helped when she was in her late teens in 1938-39. Only licensed to sell beer, Barnsley Brewery mild was 5 pence and bitter 6 pence a pint, although Fred was never seen with a pint in his hand. The fold yard is to the right, and local tradition was that if any

person committed suicide they were laid out in licensed premises. This happened only once recalls Nina at the Tavern and the person was placed in their barn. Eventually the Tavern closed on 14 November

1972 being converted to a private house. Below the house today in November 2009.

Epworth Primary Newsletter Help for Haiti The children have been very concerned about the earthquake in Haiti. The School Council has asked if we can help raise

money for the earthquake victims and will be planning an Epworth’s Got Talent show later this term. Children will be invited to audition for the show on Wednesday 24th March at 6:30pm to which parents and children will be invited. Look out for more details later.

In the meantime, we wanted to raise some money immediately to send. We will be having a non-uniform day tomorrow in school and ask for a donation to be sent in for us to send to the relief fund.

We are very pleased with the attitude of the children showing a great deal of concern for the people of Haiti. The School Council has some excellent ideas about how the talent show will be organised. Think U know how to protect your children online? We all know the dangers in the real world from strangers etc. and do all we can to protect our children. However, these days there is very real danger from the online world accessed from a laptop or mobile or other IT device in the home. In school we took part in Internet Safety Day on Tuesday February 9th and discussed with the children how they can stay

safe while online. We wanted to help the children to understand they should never give out personal details to online friends – this includes

messenger ID, email address, mobile number and any pictures of themselves, their family or friends as pictures can be changed. The children needed to understand some people may lie online and they should never meet up with any strangers without an adult they can trust.

For more information you could go onto these websites: www.thinkuknow.co.uk www.ceop.gov.uk Chinese New Year The week before Chinese New Year we had a special themed week in school with each class learning about China. Each class made a dragon to display in Assembly. Children tasted Chinese foods and the Reception children in classes 1 and 2 visited the Chinese Restaurant in Epworth. One class even took part in a tea drinking ceremony. The work included lots of different curriculum areas including Geography, I.C.T., Literacy, Maths and Art. The week started with Mrs Taylor, Assistant Headteacher showing the children a powerpoint presentation of her visit to a school in China a few years ago as part of a link made with North Lincs Schools. Schools in China are very different in lots

of ways but in other ways the children are similar! The week finished with two special assemblies. In the first each class presented its dragon – we had a dragon parade. In the second Class 6 put on a special assembly for parents to show everything they had learnt over the week.

DUST OFF THE DUSTERS WITH MOLLY MAID

It‘s strange how this time of year triggers an urge to embark upon that most rigorous of activities - spring-cleaning!

These days, this need not take up all your reserves of energy - unless of course you crave the satisfaction that comes from moving furniture and discovering for yourself how much

dust and grime accumulates in those forgotten corners and crevices. Leisure time has replaced money as the symbol of success, and many householders are seeking a bit of help around the home so that they are free to

get some well earned rest and spend time with their family doing the things they enjoy. Andy & Lynne Crewe owns‘ the local MOLLY MAID that cleans homes across the Doncaster area and explains

the benefits in hiring a professional cleaning service. ―MOLLY MAID does not only guarantee the satisfactory cleaning of your home, but is also a reliable and trustworthy organization. When you are handing over the key to your home, and perhaps the code of your burglar alarm, you want a company that is fully insured and has a

safe secure system when dealing with multiple house keys.‖ Andy & Lynne have been operating in Doncaster for the last 2 years and MOLLY MAID UK celebrated their 25th

anniversary in 2009. As a result of their experience, and the thorough training that all of the maids are given, all of the teams are ready for a Spring Clean rush at this time of year. This means that a team of maids can work through the house surprisingly quickly and efficiently causing the minimum of disruption in the home.

Of course if you want to give it a go yourself here are some tips from the domestic cleaning experts at MOLLY MAID:

Limit your cleaning products to a quality window/glass cleaner, all-purpose cleaner, tile/grout cleaner and a toilet bowl cleaner. Apply the MOLLY MAID system on cleaning. Clean from the top of the house to the

bottom and clean from top to bottom and from left to right in whatever room you are cleaning. This is the quickest and most efficient way to clean.

Dust first vacuum second. That way any bits of dust or dirt will fall to the floor and be

collected by the vacuum cleaner. Use a toothbrush for hard to reach areas in the bathroom and kitchen for example -

around the soap holder, taps and drain.

Streaks on windows are unsightly and tricky to eliminate. When cleaning windows, wipe one side of the glass horizontally and the other side vertically. This way, when

polishing out streaks, it will be easy to determine which side they are on.

For more hints and tips on cleaning your home or why you should choose MOLLY

MAID visit www.mollymaid.co.uk Alternatively for a no obligation estimate please or

contact Andy or Lynne on 01427 875566.

MATTER OR MYSTERY

We are surrounded by, and are ourselves matter. So in our

expressions we refer to matters of fact, or a matter of course, meaning the

things we can be sure and certain of. The problem is that knowledge and

understanding is always expanding.

For many of you, like me, you will have been taught that there are

four basic tastes. These being sweet and sour, saltines and bitterness. For us

this has been matter of fact, our diet has demonstrated in numerous ways

that this is so. However in January I heard on Radio 4 that there is another

basic taste called unami, a Japanese word for flavour or taste. We are told it approximates to our

understanding of savouriness (meatiness as in steak )—MacDonalds might be in the way to becoming

MacUnami. Scientifically it is carboxylate anion of glutamic acid. Now that is a mystery!

Thank God that in our life experiences not only do we have those things we know and

can hold and feel, but also those we can reach out and discove, that is the mystery and unknown of

life.

Whether you feel you need unami to widen your understanding of diet and taste will be

to your taste! However for both the known matter which gives us certainty, and for unknown

mystery which extends our imagination and vision , in all we give thanks for the rich variety of life.

The South Yorkshire Charity Ploughing Match is being held on Sat 27th and Sun 28th March

2010. It is a charity event raising funds for the British National Ploughing Match being held in Lincoln

next October.

The event will be held at Lindholme (the old airfield behind

Lindholme Prison) by kind permission of HM Prison Service

Lindholme & Ken & David Chappell and over 100 ploughmen,

including previous National, European and World Champions, are

expected each day, with horses, vintage tractors and modern

equipment.

David Chappell is celebrating 50 years of competing in ploughing

competitions by organising a weekend of events. He won his first

contest in October1960 and has had 1st places every year since and has represented England at the

World Contest on 3 occasions.

At the contest, ploughmen must plough 1/2 acre in 4 hours, the judges will

look for straight, level furrows with all the stubble buried to achieve a clean

level seedbed for the next crop and all the trash buried and sealed firmly in

to prevent the carry over of weeds and diseases.

A well ploughed field needs less fertiliser, less chemicals and uses less fuel

to achieve a better crop, than a poorly ploughed field.

The plough was invented 4000 years ago and has been gradually improved and ploughmen at this event will demonstrate the ancient art of using a

plough to create the perfect seedbed.

For more information or to obtain an entry form please contact David

Chappell on 01302 840098/07703500412 or email [email protected]

Toys of the Past

Do you remember your childhood toys? Key Stage 1 pupils have

been looking at toys past and present, focusing on the similarities

and differences between them. North Lincolnshire Museum Service

brought a range of toys for the children to look at and try out;

toys that their parents, grand-parents and even great grandparents

may have played with. A wonderful session was enjoyed by all as

the children discovered how the toys worked.

Candlemas

As a Church of England School our programme of daily acts of

worship closely follows the Christian calendar, during February

pupils celebrated Candlemas, an opportunity to reflect on Jesus‘

life after Christmas.

School Council – Haiti Appeal

Report by Ben and Jeff (Year 6 Council Reps)

Over £600 raised!

Last month the school council organised a fundraiser in school to help the people of Haiti following the dreadful earthquake. We had a bake sale and a ‘wear your jeans to school’ day. There was also a guess the name of the teddy and a ‘how many sweets in the jar’ competition. We raised a staggering £616. We would like to thank everybody for their donations and would like to thank everyone who donated buns without which the bake sale would not have been as successful as it was.

School Displays

Staff spend a lot of time creating displays of pupils work around

school. These displays not only make our school a bright and lively

place to be, but they also allow us to celebrate the work that the

children have achieved. Here are some examples of current

displays within school.

The terrible winter weather caused Axholme

Camera Club to cancel the first two meetings of the New Year. The

programme has been rearranged to include the AVs at a later stage. However,

the snowy conditions enticed a number of members to attend the Hood this

year, evidenced by photographs entered in the fifth competition.

The title 'People' gave members a broad spectrum, and there were portraits to

crowd scenes entered. The judge, local man Ray Bramall FRPS, chose Alan

Rowsell's beach scene in monochrome for 20 marks, with Andy Kershaw and

new member David Nelmes close behind with 19 each. Judy Newton, awarded

'Most Improved Member' last year, came in with 18 marks.

In the colour section,Geoff Trinder gained 20 marks for his cheeky gang of

youngsters, Allan Rowsell, Andy Kershaw and David Ulyett with

19s and 18s.

Braving the cold damp conditions, thirteen members attended a

Falconry Photography day at Sturton by Stow. Thankfully the

heavy rain of the previous day had passed, but left the ground

waterlogged. This did not spoil a fantastic day of photography,

with Lewis, Mick and Paul, the bird handlers doing a splendid job,

Lewis also giving expert tips on how to get the best results.

Everyone came home with some good photographs of the birds, a

Barn Owl, Charlie, an Eagle Owl, Horace, and a Harris Hawk,

Hedgerow, who all flew , and others who perched in trees

patiently posing. Horace, a veteran at these events, even joined

members in the clubhouse for lunch, enjoying a flapjack, much to

his owner's surprise! They are all bird's of prey, of course, and

he'd never been known to eat anything like a flapjack before.

Lewis, a professional photographer, who took up falconry as a

hobby, can be found on www.wildshotsfalconry.co.uk.

Member Geoff Trinder LRPS treated fellow members, visitors and

guests to a superb show 'Highlands and Islands' with projected images of Scottish

landscapes and wildlife, including some birds rarely seen. With the usual high

standard of photography and interesting commentary, all present enjoyed a

pleasant and entertaining evening.

Coming up in March, Parry Jenkins will be presenting his 'Musical Tour' with

projected images and presumably, music, on 3rd at Haxey Church Hall, 7.30pm.

Everyone is welcome to come along and enjoy the show. There will be a small

door charge, £1.50, to include refreshments. Similarly, George Fiddler will

present ' Canada and Alaska' on 30th.

On 9th images from the Royal Photographic Society's Nature Group Exhibition

will be shown. Everyone is welcome to attend these, too.

The Ladies v Gents competition and a talk by Ray Brightman FRPS,

DPAGB,Hon,PAGB AFIAP complete the March programme.

As always, if you are interested in photography and thinking about

joining the club, or just want to see if it's for you, you will be made

very welcome. You can telephone Chairman Allan Rowsell,

01427 752400or just come along.

Best Wishes Lynda

Surviving Automatic Number Plate Recognition

(ANPR) - a guide for law-abiding drivers.

Dear Readers,

Police using Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) systems may pull over drivers

who consider themselves law-abiding citizens alongside hardcore criminal drivers.

Number-plates obscured by dirt or with incorrect letter and number spacing, that can‘t be

read by ANPR camera, may be flagged up as suspect registrations and police sent in

pursuit. Number-plates that have been stolen or cloned by criminals and used to evade

prosecution for speeding, illegal parking, insurance and other offences may also land the

registered car owners in trouble. And then there may be inaccuracies and delays in the

data used to identify rogue cars. For their part, drivers need to appreciate that the need

to keep their number-plates street legal has never been so great, and that failure to do so

is more likely to bring prosecution for a Construction and Use offence.

"Whereas, in the past, police officers may have unofficially turned a blind eye to number-

plates covered in mud or customised registrations unless they needed to stop a car,

ANPR may mean that the days of the fancy or dirty plate are numbered.

"ANPR helps police to catch illegal vehicles and drivers together at the roadside, whereas

clamping and removing rogue cars, although taking them out of circulation, rarely catches

up with offenders who simply buy another cheap vehicle. However, there will be other

drivers, whose number-plates are obscured or cloned, who may be caught in the net."

From the point of view of police and other enforcement agencies, that any inaccuracies in

data records held by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) and any time lag in

recording changes in motorist‘s circumstances may end up with drivers being caught by

ANPR.

"Sometimes, wrong information is fed on to the DVLA database by car owners, who may

make mistakes or by criminals who try to create a false record. With so many sources of

data, such as from post offices, MOT test centres, insurance companies and people who

have sold cars privately, it is critical that it is all timely and accurate now that enforcement

increasingly hinges on these records.

If you are interested in further information regarding the courses that we offer you will be

able to find this information on the Institute of Advanced Motorists website at Safe

Driving
