Good morning everyone!

Have you ever imagined what it’s like to be in outer space? What kinds of sounds and sights exist on other planets? For today’s concert, “Symphony in Space,” Pacifi c Symphony and Pacifi c Symphony Youth Orchestra are going to take you on a journey from planet Earth to outer space!

As we begin our journey, you are going to hear “Jupiter” from Gustav Holst’s work The Planets. The work is powerful, grand and highly energetic. Right before we take off into space, the powerful rhythm and exotic harmonies of Saint-Saëns’ Danse Bacchanale will fi ll the concert hall. Be sure to listen for the driving rhythms in the timpani.

Our spotlight instrument section, the brass family, is featured in Mussorgsky’s “Great Gate of Kiev” from Pictures at an Exhibition as we blast off into space. This powerful piece opens with the full brass section playing a majestic theme. As we enter space, we will feel the sensation of fl oating during Bernstein’s “Somewhere” from West Side Story. Once in space, we will look back at Earth and marvel its beauty as we listen to the powerful and lush sound of the strings during Sibelius’ Finlandia.

Have you ever wondered what life would be like on Mars? The pounding rhythm of the percussion and brass from Holst’s “Mars” from The Planets will accompany us. Along our journey, we will see visuals of outer space, diff erent planets and even the International Space Station!

I hope you enjoy this wonderful intergalactic experience, where there will be more than 100 musicians on stage! I also hope to see you at our fi nal concert of the season on April 30, when we present Stravinsky’s The Firebird with the wonderful dancers from Orange County Ballet Theater.

Music is life,

Roger Kalia

Spotlight Instrument: The Brass FamilyYou might think that the brass family of instruments got its name because all of the instruments are made out of brass, but they are actually part of the same family because of how they produce sound. Brass instruments are long tubes that are narrow up top and wider, or bell-shaped, at the bottom.

Brass players create sound by vibrating or buzzing their lips into a mouthpiece. These vibrations travel through the instrument’s tubing and come out of the bell as pitches, or notes. Valves, or buttons, change the length of the tubing, so by pushing certain valves, brass players can make notes higher or lower.

Although most instruments now considered part of the brass family are in fact made of brass, the earliest instruments in the brass family were made out of materials like conch shells and animal horns. For example, the didgeridoo, an instrument developed by Australian aboriginal peoples, is technically a member of the brass family because the player must buzz their lips in order to produce sound. So when you think of brass, think of buzzing!

The PlanetsGustav Holst wrote The Planets from 1914–16. He had just been introduced to astrology (the study of the movement of planets and how such movement infl uences human behavior and the natural world) and wanted to capture the unique personality of each planet. Today you will hear music from two movements (or sections) of the piece, Jupiter and Mars. What types of personalities do you hear

in the music?

Star Wars

In the music of Star Wars,

composer John Williams uses leitmotifs.

Leitmotifs are musical themes that are used

to portray certain characters, places, or ideas,

and are commonly used in opera and fi lm.

The Imperial March, for example, always plays in the

movie when Darth Vader comes on screen! John WilliamsJohn Williams was born in 1932 in

New York. He began taking piano lessons as a young boy, and after moving to Los Angeles with

his family, attended UCLA where he studied composition (how to write music). He worked as a jazz pianist after returning from World War II and

continued his musical studies at the famous Juilliard School in New York. John Williams is best known for his television and fi lm music. He has written numerous memorable movie scores, including

those for Indiana Jones, Jurassic Park,Star Wars and several of the Harry Potter movies.

Gustav Holst

Gustav Holst was born in 1874

in Cheltenham, England. His father was

an accomplished pianist and piano teacher,

and wanted young Gustav to follow in his

footsteps. Holst grew up playing the violin and

piano, but he enjoyed the piano more and

practiced it far more often than his violin.

As an adult Holst worked as a composer

and teacher. Although Holst wrote many

works, he remained relatively unsuccessful

until the premiere of The Planets, which took

England by storm and made Holst

a celebrity. The Planets remains

the most famous of his

works today.

in 2013. Lauderdale was the Youth Theatre Director at the Laguna Playhouse from 1988-2005. While at the Playhouse he was honored by the American Alliance for Theatre and Education (AATE) with the Youth Theatre Director of the Year Award in 2001. He directed and/or produced more than 70 productions for both youth and adults. He adapted several popular books for the stage including The Summer of the Swans, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, Tom Sawyer and Cut, as well as the original works Lost Children and A False Reality. Recent productions include The Rocky Horror Show, Xanadu, Ruthless and Lucky Stiff . In addition to directing and producing, Joe has been a theater educator, teaching classes in theater games, creative drama, improvisation, acting techniques and musical theater.

S tephanie Draude is ecstatic to join Pacifi c Symphony for Symphony in Space! Growing up, she imagined traveling all over the universe in her very own rocket ship. She specifi cally dreamed of visiting Saturn, her favorite planet, and seeing its rings for herself. Draude was

last seen with Pacifi c Symphony as Clementine Sparkletoes in Nutcracker for Kids, Silver String in Superheroes and Watson in A Sherlock Holmes Halloween! Draude has performed in numerous productions throughout Southern California as well as worked behind the scenes for some of Orange County’s premiere theater companies. She currently works as the front of house manager at South Coast Repertory. Favorite credits include Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (Christine), Seussical (Gertrude), The Redneck Wedding, RENT, The Full Monty and Dreamgirls. She is a proud graduate of UC Irvine with her bachelor’s in drama and honors in musical theater. Draude would like to extend her special thanks to Joe Lauderdale and Susan M. Orange County. He was recently seen in the Gamer’s Guide to Pretty Much Everything “Pen Pal” episode portraying the character Donny. His fi lm debut was in the movie HOP in 2011 where he played the role of Young Fred. The older version of Fred was played by Hollywood star James Marsden. Coleton is thrilled to be back on the Segerstrom Concert Hall stage is excited to share this fun and exciting space adventure with everyone!

R obert Burns got the performing bug back when he was in grade school (in the 1970s!) by performing in his school’s talent show where he lip-synched to a comedy album. Unfortunately, it would be another 10 years before he auditioned for his fi rst musical,

but he has been hooked on live theater ever since. Burns has performed in several musicals and continues to help out in the San Clemente High School Drama Department. He serves as a chair for the “Stars of Tomorrow” vocal competition (visit southcoastsingers.org), which provides scholarships to deserving students. Burns acts in commercials and is represented by Coast to Coast. Professionally, Burns is a certifi ed fi nancial planning professional with Stifel (burnsinvestmentgroup.com), and he lives in San Clemente with his wife of over 30 years, Sandra.
