Israel Commemorates the CrossingIsrael Commemorates the Crossing

In the 3rd chapter of Joshua God again shows his power over nature by allowing the Israelites to cross the Jordan river on

dry land.


Priest carrying the ark of the covenant walk to the water first. When their feet touch the surface of

the water it stops flowing and piles up.


Who has ever seen a pile of water besides God’s

chosen people, the Israelites?


The NET Bible foot notes says this: Heb “the waters of the

Jordan, the waters descending from above, will

be cut off so that they will stand in one pile.” (NET notes)


The strength and endurance God gives the

priest carrying the ark boggles my mind.


It seems these mere men stand holding the ark

while the entire people of Israel cross the Jordan

River.


There must be at least one million, if not two million people in the Israelite group at this

point.


I don’t have the math where-with-all to figure

how long it would take to accomplish this crossing.


Even if they were spread out a mile wide it would still take some time to get everyone across.


We pick up reading in Joshua 4 after the crossing had been

accomplished.

Joshua 4:1 NET When the entire nation was on the other

side, the LORD told Joshua, 2 "Select for

yourselves twelve men from the people, one per tribe.


3 Instruct them, 'Pick up twelve stones from the middle of the Jordan, from the very place

where the priests stand firmly,


and carry them over with you and put them in the place where you

camp tonight.' "


4 Joshua summoned the twelve men he had appointed from the

Israelites, one per tribe.


5 Joshua told them, "Go in front of the ark of the

LORD your God to the middle of the Jordan.


Each of you is to put a stone on his shoulder,

according to the number of the Israelite tribes.


6 The stones will be a reminder to you. When

your children ask someday, 'Why are these stones important to you?'


7 tell them how the water of the Jordan stopped

flowing before the ark of the covenant of the

LORD.


When it crossed the Jordan, the water of the Jordan stopped flowing. These stones will be a

lasting memorial for the Israelites."


Joshua 4:18 NET The priests carrying the ark of the covenant of the LORD

came up from the middle of the Jordan,


and as soon as they set foot on dry land, the water of the Jordan flowed again and

returned to flood stage.


19 The people went up from the Jordan on the

tenth day of the first month and camped in Gilgal on the eastern border of Jericho.


20 Now Joshua set up in Gilgal the twelve stones they had taken from the

Jordan.


21 He told the Israelites, "When your children

someday ask their fathers, 'What do these

stones represent?'


22 explain to your children, 'Israel crossed the Jordan River on dry

ground.'


23 For the LORD your God dried up the water of the Jordan before you while you crossed over.


It was just like when the LORD your God dried up

the Red Sea before us while we crossed it.


24 He has done this so all the nations of the earth

might recognize the LORD's power and so you might always obey the LORD your God."


These stone were meant to remind, or teach future

generations about God’s power of salvation in order that they might

always obey The Lord.

Circumcision NeglectedCircumcision Neglected

With the death of the males 20 and older in

these 40 years of wondering in the desert, circumcision had been

neglected.


Joshua is ordered to circumcise the males born during these 40

years.


We join the story in Joshua 5:9 after the

circumcisions had taken place.

Manna Stopped AppearingManna Stopped Appearing

Joshua 5:9 NET The LORD said to Joshua, "Today I have

taken away the disgrace of Egypt from you." So that

place is called Gilgal even to this day.


10 So the Israelites camped in Gilgal and celebrated

the Passover in the evening of the fourteenth day of the month on the

plains of Jericho.


11 They ate some of the produce of the land the day after the Passover, including unleavened

bread and roasted grain.


12 The manna stopped appearing the day they ate some of the produce

of the land; the Israelites never ate manna again.


There being now no further need of it; miracles are not wrought or continued when

unnecessary; for the ceasing of the manna shows, that it was not a common but an extraordinary provision.

Manna A Type of ChristManna A Type of Christ

The ceasing of the manna, which was a type of Christ, may signify the

cessation of Gospel ordinances, in which Christ is held forth as

food for his people. (Gill)


Manna being a type of Christ draws us to Jesus speaking

to a crowd who were part of the thousands He

miraculously fed by the sea the day before.


John 6:31 NET Our ancestors ate the manna in the

wilderness, just as it is written, 'He gave them bread from heaven to

eat.' “


32 Then Jesus told them, "I tell you the solemn truth, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but my Father is giving you the true bread from heaven.


33 For the bread of God is the one who comes down from heaven and gives

life to the world."


34 So they said to him, "Sir, give us this bread all the time!" 35 Jesus

said to them, "I am the bread of life.


The one who comes to me will never go hungry,

and the one who believes in me will never be

thirsty.

Joys of HeavenJoys of Heaven

The increase of the land, not only of the fields, but of the

vineyards and oliveyards, which they had neither sown nor

planted, which may denote the plenty and variety of the joys of

heaven, and glories of the future state;


the various fruits which grow on Christ, the tree of life,

brought forth every month, or continually; all which will be enjoyed through the free grace of God, without the works or merits of men.


“the Israelites never ate manna again” having no more

need of it, as the saints in heaven will stand in no

more need of Gospel ordinances: (Gill)

A Reminder of God’s PowerA Reminder of God’s Power

Let’s think back to the 12 stones set up as a

reminder of The Lord’s power and the need of

obedience to Him. What is our reminder today?


1 Corinthians 11:23 NET For I received from the Lord

what I also passed on to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night in which he was betrayed took bread,


24 and after he had given thanks he broke it and said, "This is my body,

which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me."


25 In the same way, he also took the cup after

supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in

my blood.


Do this, every time you drink it, in remembrance of me." 26 For every time you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the

Lord's death until he comes.


This is our memorial which reminds us every week of God’s power of

salvation.


The power in raising His Son from the dead. And our need to obey Jesus,

God The Son, so we’ll be ready when He returns!

He will return.

will come again and take you to be with me, so that where I am you may be

too.

This time of year our minds think of that

empty tomb. Jesus was raised from the dead.

With Him in GloryWith Him in Glory

Should not our minds be on this continually as

well as his return to fetch us home with Him in

Glory?

2 Peter 3:10 NET But the day of the Lord will come like a thief; when it comes, the heavens will disappear with a horrific noise,


and the celestial bodies will melt away in a blaze, and the earth and every deed done on it will be

laid bare.


11 Since all these things are to melt away in this

manner, what sort of people must we be,

conducting our lives in holiness and godliness,


12 while waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God? Because of this day, the heavens will be burned up and

dissolve,


and the celestial bodies will melt away in a

blaze! 13 But, according to his promise,


we are waiting for new heavens and a new earth,

in which righteousness truly resides.

Do these verses scare you? We shouldn’t fear the coming of the Lord. We should wait, praying

He comes quickly.
