EVENT Volume 19, Issue 2, 16 March 2020

We acknowledge the homelands of all Aboriginal people and pay our respects to Country.

From the Relieving Principal The school year is now in full swing and students are engaged in lots of wonderful learning opportunities both within and outside the classroom. Our Year 7 students have settled in well and thoroughly enjoyed their camp, even if the weather was a little miserable. Our first field study day provided enrichment to the curriculum, as does our wide range of co-curricular clubs organised by staff for students.

Year 7 Camp

Report by Lorus Hi, Year 7 Student Adviser

On 4 March, the Year 7s attended their first high school camp at the gorgeous Broken Bay Sport and Recreation Centre. While the rain made it difficult, the students showed resilience and perseverence in completing every activity. They completed hikes around the bay, participated in a variety of team-building exercises including building a raft and many had their first go at archery. It was great to see the students working and supporting each other as a team and developing positive and long-lasting friendships.

Rain could not dampen Year 7’s enthusiasm for camp!

United Nations Youth State Conference

Report by Mieke Barratt, Year 12 Prefect

Alongside more than 200 students from across the state, Thu Tran (school captain) and I had the incredible opportunity to attend the United Nations Youth State Conference for 2020 in Collaroy. The weekend consisted of workshops, listening to passionate and influential guest speakers, interactive-problem solving scenarios, testing our knowledge with trivia, grooving on the dance floor, and imitating a state member in a Model United Nations debate at UTS.

We explored the meaning of leadership, diplomacy and advocacy, practiced debating and public speaking skills, and befriended a variety of students. The theme for the conference, The Politics of Development, explored key issues of international development and global inequality that are pivotal in shaping international conversation.

We returned with an ignited passion for social justice and politics, feeling motivated to create positive change in our local and global community.

English and Drama Report by Pauline Hageman, HT English and Drama

Year 11 English students were treated to a fantastic Field Study Day on 6 March, where students were a fabulous audience for a sensory movie day at Event Cinemas, Burwood. Students viewed Jo Jo Rabbit and a new production of Austen’s Emma, both of which engendered much conversation. These films will contextually inform their learning in Stage 6 English as well as being suitable related texts for the first HSC module: Texts and Human Experiences, in Term 4, 2020.

Debating and Writesmart workshops are in full swing in the library every Monday afternoon, 3:20-4:15pm. Extension opportunities are also available to all Year 8 and 9 English students who are invited to extend their learning by taking part in the 2020, Semester 1 English Showcase. This web-based series of projects is for students who enjoy English and wish to extend their understanding and develop their skills as autonomous learners. Kate Stavert and Tristan Carey have developed these extension challenges and will be coming around to English classes over the next couple of weeks to outline the projects.

Year 12 Drama spent the day at Belvoir Theatre to watch recordings of past productions including, ‘The Laramie Project and ‘Mother Courage and Her Children’ which form the basis of the HSC area of study, ‘Significant plays from the 20th century’. Congratulations to three students from BGHS, Yasmine Tabikh, Olive FitzGerald and Amelia Pieri who performed in Newington College’s production of Urinetown at NIDA Studios, which was highly entertaining and appreciated by a large audience of family, friends and teachers.

BGHS students performed in production of Urinetown at NIDA

BGHS Years 9 and 10 Theatre Sports teams have begun their rehearsal process every Tuesday afternoon in the movement studio. There are still places available in Theatre Sports, so if you are interested in joining please see Mr Gallaway.

Year 9 Field Study Day

Report by Eva Kreutzer, Emmelina Ho and Sarah Jessup, 9SE

On Friday, 6 March, all of Year 9 embarked on a journey to the Planetarium at the Science Centre at Wollongong University. We spent a day being involved in a range of science experiences that embodied how scientific and technological discoveries have become reality.

The first fun-filled experience was the ‘Liquid Nitrogen’ show. We watched in amazement, the unique effects of liquid nitrogen freezing everyday objects such as rubber balls, leaves and flowers to the point where they shatter in thousands of tiny pieces when gently pressed with your fingers or even hit with a hammer. Did you know that liquid nitrogen boils at a temperature of -196oC? Our volunteers had to be very careful and wore protective gloves when encountering this amazing chemical. This is because it can very rapidly freeze the water inside and between the cells in your body, thus killing them!

Year 9 students learning about liquid nitrogen

The planetarium film viewing of ‘We are All Stars’ was the ultimate time space adventure! It allowed us to sit back, relax and explore the secrets of our cosmic universe and explosive origins. We learnt how everything on Earth including, you and me, originated from an explosion that happened 13.8 billion years ago that inevitably formed stars. Yes! Now I can definitely appreciate that we are in fact, STARS in every way!

Lastly, in small class groups, we were given the opportunity to go through over 100 interactive science related exhibits. It was fascinating watching how and why things work. All in all, we had a wonderful time being inspired by the discoveries from our past and look forward to what the future holds. We feel it has empowered us to help change it for the better.

Science Extension and UNSW Summer School

Ankita Paudel, Year 12, reports on her experience with Science Extension and the UNSW Summer School, which

she attended in January this year.

HI. I am currently studying Science Extension (SciX), which is a one-unit course, focusing on the scientific process. This course is student dependent, as it moves at the students’ pace, in which students learn about the scientific process by engaging in a scientific research project. For my topic I have chosen “Eye motion and Fatigue”, which looks into transport fatigue and its effect on transport safety.

I am currently being mentored by a PHD student from UNSW who is doing her research on a similar topic. UNSW offers a weeklong summer school for its mentees, in which the mentors help students develop a hypothesis and a research question. The summer school helped me achieve a major milestone in my research, allowing me to work on my project independently. For the week I was at UNSW, I was able to gather primary and secondary data for my research investigation.

SciX is based on students’ choice of research, so when I resumed school at the start of 2020, I was able to continue from where I left off at UNSW summer school. Burwood GHS also provides immense guidance and support for this course, ensuring you never feel like you don’t know what you are doing. Even though the Year 12 workload can get overwhelming at times, it is still a great experience. Thus, I would highly recommend future Year 12 science students consider Science Extension.

Year 10 Field Study Day at Jewish Museum

Report by Olivia, Hope & Fololina On 6 March, all of Year 10 went on an excursion to the Jewish Museum for history. We were all assigned into day groups with allocated tour guides. Our tour guides lead us around the museum showing us artifacts, clothing, videos/photographs of the holocaust history. We learnt about the treatment the people involved in the holocaust received by the Nazi party and their journeys to concentration camps from their homes.

We also had the opportunity to listen to a holocaust survivor named Egon. Egon shared his testimony about his experience of the holocaust and it was very interesting to listen to someone who had actually experienced this many years ago.

Overall, it was a great experience, learning and extending our knowledge about the holocaust by witnessing and learning about its history. We definitely would recommend it for the younger year groups.

Report by Jaera, Ahlem, Lily & Julia At the Jewish Museum we were shown artifacts which were saved by the survivors during the Holocaust. These artifacts included things like old uniforms, a bag of private belongings, photos etc. These artifacts helped us understand what they went through and how bad their living conditions were during the Holocaust.

We were also spoken to by a survivor (Egon) who lived through the holocaust. His story explained to us the hardships that he experienced, like being discriminated against by people he thought were his friends, constantly having to run away, changing his name, having his possessions stolen by the Nazis and watching innocent people such as his grandparents die right in front of him. By having this first-hand account, it makes us realise the realness and severity of the Holocaust.

Overall, the trip to the museum was very informative and helpful for our understanding of the events that happened during the Holocaust.

Year 10 students at the Jewish Museum for Field Study Day

Report by Olivia The Year 10 excursion to the Jewish Museum was a great experience. We learnt many things about the Holocaust and the terrifying tragedies that people had to go through during those times. It was a very sad but very educational day for all students. The whole year had a chance to listen to Aviva and ask questions to her as she is a survivor that had such a difficult time growing up as a child during the Holocaust. Listening to Aviva's story was sad but she was able to share her story. It shows that she got through such a horrible time but she managed to keep her faith and hope. We all sympathised and learned in life no matter what happens you have to have hope and keep the peace.

Another student report On the history excursion, we visited the Jewish museum and met the Holocaust survivor Aviva Fox who shared her experience. She talked about her life experience and how she had to live in hiding in order to not get caught and she also talked about how everything affected her and how she travelled across countries and finally found connections to her past and her life. We were led by a tour guide who showed us many artifacts and sources from the Holocaust and learnt about the lives of the survivors, the guards, and the execution squads. We also learnt a lot about the lives of the people in ghettos and concentration camps.

Hints Muffins are best cooked on day of serving. Avoid overmixing the muffin batter or it will result in a tough texture. Year 8 went to Jamberoo for their first Field Study Day on Friday 6 March to gain inspiration for their Engineered Systems – The Ride of Your Life, where they will be designing and drawing a ride suitable for a fun park. This will be linked with the knowledge, skills and understanding gained in the work they did in the STEM Project – Burwood Goes Ballistic, last year.

A massive thank you to all the teachers who attended this field study – all your efforts were greatly appreciated.

Year 8 – Jamberoo FSD

Report by Ellie Charalambous and Year 8

On Friday 6 March, 168 Year 8 students and their teachers set out for their journey to Jamberoo. After a few hiccups we were finally on our way.

Jamberoo was a really rewarding experience. It was so much fun going around with our friends and going on rides. The bus trip there and back was really fun because we sang and played a few games. My friends and I went on the Taipan the most because it was so much fun (and some of my friends were scared to go on the other ones). We also went on the green racing slides a lot, and of course, I won every time!

At the end of the day, we wanted to get an ice-cream before we left, but unfortunately we didn’t have time, but we saw that the teachers were enjoying these massive cones.

Jamberoo was so much fun and I am so glad we had the opportunity to experience it before our upcoming assessment task.

Thank you to all the teachers who organised it and accompanied us on this fun day.

Year 8 enjoyed their visit to Jamberoo for field study day

Teachers also enjoyed Jamberoo, especially the ice-cream!

Year 9 – Food Technology, Design and Technology and Textiles Technology

All Year 9 classes have commenced work on new units that meet the requirements of the new Stage 5 syllabi that are mandated for implementation in 2020.

Watch this space for the numerous projects coming up.

Year 11 and 12 Textiles and Design and Design Technology are off to the Powerhouse Museum to view the SHAPE exhibition and attend seminars on the Major Projects that need to be completed as part of their course work for the

HSC. The SHAPE exhibition displays selected exemplary 2019 HSC Major Works from around the state. The seminars were most useful and reassuring for the students to know that their teacher is on the right track.

If you have a chance to view the exhibitions, it is most worthwhile as they are extremely motivating and inspirational and show real life examples of what can be achieved in these subjects.

We look forward to seeing you all at the BOW Exhibition here in our school hall in Term 3 when our Year 12 students display their Major Works.

Year 10 – Hospitality

The students have all received their uniforms ready to wear for all their practical lessons as well as their work placement later in the year.

This is the first year that students have started early commencement in Hospitality. They have commenced Stage 6 Hospitality, which will allow them to complete the course in Year 11 and sit for the HSC in this subject if they elect to continue studying it in 2021. It is advantageous in many respects, mainly that one of their HSC subjects would be completed in Year 11, freeing them up to concentrate on their other units in Year 12.

We look forward to how this progresses throughout the year and feedback as well.

Year 11 – Hospitality

Year 11 Hospitality had their first function on 26 February. They catered for the Year 7 Meet and Greet Parent Evening, preparing and serving up some lovely fruit platters for the guests.

Their next function will be their Cluster Task – Preparing and Serving Sandwiches.

Year 11 Hospitality and their fabulous fruit platters

Café on Queen

Café on Queen will be starting up again soon. Please watch for notifications in

the daily Sentral notices and continue to support the students as they work towards completing their training, whilst you treat yourself to a hot beverage, delicious muffins, mini quiches or a filling warm bacon and egg roll.

Burwood Girls HS Swimming Carnival

On Monday 17 February, the BGHS annual swimming carnival was held at Enfield Aquatics Centre.

It was a mixed bag of weather, however the carnival proceeded and we experienced rain, humidity and heat. The students and teachers alike still enjoyed the day and participated with excellent enthusiasm.

The House Cheer and Best Dressed competitions were supported with an array of ‘Australian Iconic’ concepts by both the students and the teachers.

Many students took the plunge and entered into races to gain those valuable house points which was fantastic to see and Year 12 definitely enjoyed their last House Scramble.

I would like to thank the spectators who came and supported the students as this added to the atmosphere of the day.

One HUGE thank you goes to the hardworking staff of BGHS. Without their efforts, the carnival would not have been such an amazing event.

However, there can only be one winner and the 2020 winning house was Cumbora! 2nd place went to Kurrajong, 3rd to Yorrell and in 4th place was Kayeroo.

On Monday 2 March, BGHS students travelled to Macquarie University Aquatics Centre to compete at the zone swimming carnival.

It was an incredibly hot day (38 degrees) but our team still swam with a huge amount of energy and commitment throughout the day. All our age relays, the 6 x 50m relay and Opens medal relay had convincing wins. Congratulations to Emma Ji in Year 7 who is the Zone 12yrs age champion.

A special thank you to Ms Sander Burns for her assistance at the carnival.

All swimmers will progress to the next level of competition on Tuesday 24 March at the Sydney North Regional Swimming Carnival at Sydney Olympic Aquatics Centre, Homebush. We wish them all the best of luck.

NSW All School Triathlon Championships

The NSW All School Triathlon Championships were held on Thursday 27 February. A very early start allowed students and teachers to witness this beautiful morning sunrise.

Despite the morning cloud, the sun managed to come through, increasing daily temperatures. Racing conditions proved to be more difficult throughout the events of the day, in particular for the Senior Team. Regardless of this, all teams dedicated themselves to performing at their highest level for their events.

Intermediate Team: Edie Bloomfield, Lucy Finch, Georgia Atherton - Placed 4th

Intermediate Team: Amber Simpson, Freya Taylor, Jemma Veneran - Placed 6th

Senior Team: Charlotte Fletcher, Olive FitzGerald and Alex Papamichalakis - Placed 10th.

We are very proud of their fantastic effort for this huge event. Congratulations to all the participants for their exceptional teamwork and display of sportsmanship.

We would also like to thank Mr Papamichalakis, Mr Bloomfield and Mrs Veneran for transporting sporting equipment to the venue. It would not be possible to enter this fantastic event without your ongoing support.

Rowing news

Congratulations to Ela Huber in Year 10 on her recent success at the NSWCHS Rowing Championships. Ela’s first competition at this level was amazing as she placed 1st in the Under 17 yrs 2km single scull. This result has led to Ela being selected to compete at the International Rowing Regatta at the end of March. Ela will be competing in the Under 19s 2km single scull, and in a quad team in the Under 19s category. We wish her all the best at the competition.

A shout out must go to Ela’s coach- Alexandra Lowe who is an ex-Burwood girl, who also represented the school at rowing. Thank you for passing on your knowledge and skills to Ela and for keeping the rowing tradition at BGHS alive.

Under 14’s Girls Cricket Team play in the boys competition

The Under 14 Girls Grade Cricket Team is making history by playing in a boys’ competition. The third game of the season demonstrated their high level of skill as they defeated Hunters Hill High School. That’s right, the girls beat the boys in cricket! The team is highly motivated after the Women’s T20 World Cup and are committed to more wins.

Most importantly, the girls have been complimented by opposing teams for their excellent spirit and sportsmanship. It has been an outstanding effort by all girls involved.
