If you willi eo .... dill ...... , .... call: z-. ... , 1IIIe ..... , _ :_ Wagon Train Coming There will be plenty of excitement in Abernath y Saturday as the Texas Sesquicentennial Wagon Train rolls into town. According to trail boss. James Martin . the wagon train will reach New Deal around 2 p.m. and should bt! in here around 4 p.m. Martin said anyone wishing to ride with toe wagon train may meet them in New Deal and ride into Abernathy. or they may meet up with . them here in town Sunday morning and proceed toward Plain· view. "No one is locked in to travel any distance." said Martin . He said if anyone just wants to go a few miles they are more than welcome. So far the wagon train has travelled 1200 miles of the 3200 miles route . They will camp he re in Abernathy Saturday ni ght at the rodeo grounds. Since the wagon train rel ies on donations along the way. the Sesqui. centennial Committee is plan nine on having the wagons in front of City Hall Saturda y aftern oon. Anyon e wishing to have their picture taken on the wagon train may do so for $2.50. This is an exce ll ent opportun il y to have your children photographed on this historical occasion. The committee will keep a portion of the cos, of photographing to cover their expenses and the rest will pe given to th e wagon train. Chamber Banquet Set For April 4 The Abernathy Chamber of Com· merce annual banquet will be held April 4 at 7: JO p.m. in the Community Ce nter . according to banquet chairman John Hale. Ti ckets are 57 per person . with a special for high school se niors of 54.SO a ticket. Senior Citizens may get in for 5S a ticket. The banq uet is open to t he entir e community . not just Chamber members . Smoke Ring Barbecue will be cateri ng the event this year . Special speaker for the evening will be J udge J . Q. Warnick of Lubbock. A nalive of Tahoka . he graduated from Lubbock High School and Texas Tech Uni versity. He went on to graduate from the University of Texas. School of law . Warni ck is married to Loretta. a school teacher. and they have two daug hter s and a son. Fr o m 1959·6 1 he was Assistant County Attorney for Lubbock County. He went into private practice from 1% 1·76. In November of 1976 he was elec ted Judge of the Count y Court at law No. 2. where he ,erved until December 1984 . In 1984 Warnick was appointed as U.S. Magis trate. U.S. Di s 'ri ct Coun . where he prese ntly se rves. He has been a memb er of Toastm as te rs Int t! rna ti onal since 19S9. In 1982 he bt!came only 'he fourth me mber in Toas tmasters' DO· year history to reo ceive th e coveted d es ignati on of Ac/\edited Speaker. In 1979 he was a ppoin ted by Gov. Cleme nts as one of 14 members of 'he ' Drug Abuse Pr eve n tion Advisor y Counc il . s erving a fo ur ·ye ar term. Fr om 1983·85 he served as Dru g Awareness Chairman of Di stric' 2T·2 of lions Club Internationa l. In 1985 he received the Lions International Pres dent's Award for dru g abu se preven· tion e ffort s. Th e sa me year he received a national recognition award from th e Nati o nal F ede rati on of Parents for Drug·Free Youth . Warnick is widely known aro und the area for hi s interest ing and humorous speeches. Dunn Bonored For B;'sketball Skill Car ey E. McDonald. Executive Director of the National High School Athleti c Coaches Association, has announced. that Phoebe Dunn of Abernathy High Sc/lool, coached by Pat Mouser. has been nominated for the 1986 Converse National High School Basketball AII·America . The AA squad will represent the finest basketball athletes in America. Not more than five nominees are sub· mitted from each state by the state . high school coaches committee . Each AII·America athlete and school will be honored with an award plaque. The AA Honorable Mention recipients will be presented an award certificate. The full roster of tht! 1986 Converse National High School Basketball All· America for boys and girls and the Honorable Menti on ro st er will be announced on or about April IS. McDonald stated. " The AA Select· ion Committee will co nsider the nominations of the finest group of all· round pr l ep athletes in the hi story of the Converse AII ·America Bas ket· ball Award Program" ... and closed with " Student·Athlete recognition at local. state. and national levels serves as a strong motivational force in the future involvement of young boys and girls - in a action alternative through school activities ... "Let's all pitch in and keep Abernathy as free of weeds as possible." The weed problem results in au unsightly town. A number of other problems result from weedy lots and areas. Among these are: I. Russell said from the city' s stand· poinl. they would certainly appreciate it if everyone would make an effort · to help keep this problem under control. The city relains right and authority to mow lots and areas when they become overgrown with weeds. When this is done. Ihe person who owns the lots will be billed for the services. Wagon Train Coming

There will be plenty of excitement in Abernath y Saturday as the Texas Sesquicentennial Wagon Train rolls into town.

According to trail boss. James Martin . the wagon train will reach New Deal around 2 p.m . and should bt! in here around 4 p .m. Martin said anyone wishing to ride with toe wagon train may meet them in New Deal and ride into Abernathy. or they may meet up with . them here in town Sunday morning and proceed toward Plain· view. "No one is locked in to travel any distance ." said Martin . He said if anyone just wants to go a few miles they are more than welcome.

So far the wagon train has travelled 1200 miles of the 3200 miles route .

They will camp he re in Abernathy Saturday night at the rodeo grounds .

Since the wagon train rel ies on donations along the way . the Sesqui . centennial Com mittee is plan nine on having the wagons in front of City Hall Saturda y aftern oo n . Anyon e wishing to have their picture taken on the wagon train may do so for $2. 50. This is an excelle nt opportun ily to have your children photographed on this historical occasion . The committee will keep a portion of the cos, of photographing to cove r their expe nses and the rest will pe given to the wagon train .

Chamber Banquet Set For April 4

The Abernathy Chamber of Com· merce annual banquet will be held April 4 at 7: JO p.m. in the Community Center. according to banquet chairman John Hale.

Tickets are 57 per person. with a special for high school seniors of 54 .SO a ticket. Senior Citizens may get in for 5S a ticket. The banq uet is open to t he entire community . not just Chamber members .

Special speaker for the evening will be J udge J . Q. Warnick of Lubbock. A nalive of Tahoka . he graduated from Lubbock High School and Texas Tech Unive rsi ty. He went on to graduate from the University of Texas. School of law .

Warnick is married to Loretta. a school teacher . and they have two daughters and a son.

Executive Director of the National High School Athletic Coaches Association, has announced. that Phoebe Dunn of Abernathy High Sc/lool, coached by Pat Mouser. has been nominated for the 1986 Converse National High School Basketball AII·America . The Abernathy Antelope boys lrIet learn on the basis of a strong overall team performance scored 96 points and garnered second plaCe in their own tnek meet held Saturday. 'March 22.

Ollon won ' the boys division II championship with 116 points. Other teams in the division II were Bovina, Hart. Hale Center. Spade. Petersburg. Lorenzo. Springlake. Earth. Morton and Lubbock Christian High School.

Abernathy had two individual gold medal winners, Joseph Ruiz won the BOO·meter with a lime of 2:04.22. and Bill DuBose won the discus with a throw of 136'811,". The l600-meter relay team. composed of Terry Hood. Billy Cooper. Chuck Thompson. and J oseph Ruil. also captu red first place with a time of 3:39.02.

Several individual s finished in second place. Cooper was se.cond in the JOO·mctcr inte rmediate hurdles, Migue l Guillen was s'econd in the 409·meler run . Flint Bigham in the

high jump. and Robert May in the ' shot put. aU capturing silver medals. Picking up the bronze third place medaJ was Patrick Ponce in the 3200-meter run.

Other individuals and places were ' Rowdy Powell. fiflh in the JOO·mcter hurdles; Gilbert Blanco. sixth in the 3200·meter run; Tony Rodriguez. sixth in the 1600·meter run; Pete Garcia. six!h in Ihe shot put; Thompson . fourth in the 200'meter dash; Guillen. fourth in Ihe long jump; and Bigham. sixth in the 400- meter run. The 400·meler relay team of Cooper. Powell. Thompson. and Ricky May picked up a fifth place finish.

Other individuals competing for the Antelopes were Jesse Ruiz. Fabian Avalos. Johnny Pace. Roy Camacho. Jesse Garcia. Jack Waters, Brandon Houston and Pe te Olivas.

Services for Melvin Arthur Johnson. 74 •. were at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Abernathy Church of Christ with Jerry Chism and Condy Billingsley officiat­ing.

Burial was in Abernathy Cemetery under the direction of Chambers Funeral Home.

He died Monday at Methodist Hospital after a lengthy illness.

He was born in Childress . He moved to Abernathy in 1920. He worked for an irrigation supply company. He married Anna Lee Snyder in 1939 in Lubbock.

Survivors include his wife ; two daughters, Nita Douglas of Lewisville and Sandra Clayton of Ruston. La.; two brothers. Orgill of Portales. N.M. and Herman of Lubbock; a sister Nanie Patterson of Lubbock; and three grandchildren.
