If you have a child due to start Marcellin in 2019, please take the opportunity to look around the school and pick up an enrolment form. These need to be returned quickly as places are starting to be filled and we would not like to see current families miss out. Also on Wednesday, the Catholic Church celebrates The feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. As a Champagnat Marist College in New Zealand, this is an important feast day for Marcellin College, as it is the patronal feast day of our Marist brothers and also of the patroness of New Zealand. The feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary celebrates the belief - dating from the earliest Christian times - that Mary, when she died, was taken body and soul into heaven, in this way anticipating the general resurrection of all people on the last day. At Marcellin College, we honour Mary as the wider Marist family does, as the first disciple, a woman with dust on her feet, a woman who was disturbed and puzzled by God, who was challenged to trust and give without knowing all the answers, a woman whose faith life was a journey. One of St Marcellin Champagnat’s great sayings was “All to Jesus, through Mary”. Mary points us to Jesus and gives to us a maternal face of the Church. There is a need for us to learn from Mary, through her humility, her life of faith, hope and love of God and others. As we celebrate the feast of the Assumption, let it remind all of us that we need to be assumed in holiness. We need to reflect in our lives those values that Mary radiated as the Mother of God. This Friday we celebrate our Sacramental Mass at 11.15 am in the gym. Bishop Pat is presiding and we have a large number of students being Baptised or receiving Confirmation and First Eucharist. We invite all parents to join us in one of the highlights of our school year. Please keep our students who are receiving sacraments of initiation, in your prayers. There are 5 weeks until senior exams begin. It is time for year 11- 13 students to begin their revision. Please support your student with this, and ensure they have the time available in the evening to be studying, so they can achieve to their potential this year. Year 11 Student Assessments

Parents of Year 11 students please log in to the parent portal at www.kamar.marcellin.school.nz to see how your child is tracking with their credits. There are a number of internal assessments still taking place so it is really important that Year 11 students are present at school every day. There are assessments coming up in the next two weeks in English (ENB), Music and Dance. Please note that the Year 11 Music assessment evening is this Thursday 16 August.

Year 11 Retreat

On Tuesday 31 July, the Year 11s had their retreat. Due to unforeseen circumstances the venue was changed from Christ the King Parish to St Therese Parish in Mangere. This did not take away from the retreat being a fun, relaxing and great day. The Retreat focused on four main principles;

having faith in our friendships and in our families

paying it forward

making time for our loved ones and for God AND

learning to forgive and how to be forgiven. The retreat was a great experience and was definitely a day well spent. Finlay Samasoni-Tukuitonga

Stand Up! Stand Out! Competition

The annual SUSO competition kicked off earlier this term. First up were Solo Vocal heats with 160 entries in this category alone! Marcellin College represented with four singers: Ester Naufahu (Yr 13), Simione Petelo (Yr 13), Kasi Valu (Yr 13) and Minia Prescott (Yr 7). The judges chose 36 singers to move onto the semi-finals - both Ester Naufahu and Minia Prescott secured themselves a place. Ester’s song choice was Whitney’s ‘Run to You’ whilst Minia went for a mix of ‘Girl Put Your Records On’ and a Cardi B rap. Next up was the Solo Instrumental heats. Over 50 budding instrumentalists took the stage to vie for one of only five spots in the Grand Final; Simione Petelo (Yr 13) was successful and will be representing Marcellin on Saturday 1st September at the Vodafone Events Centre. Monday 7th August was time for the bands to step up. We had two bands entered: ‘Starlight’ consisting of Yr 10 students Vlayla Cawis, Raina Lim and Ezra Galang, as well as ‘The Islanders’ made up of Simione Petelo (Yr 13), Culistofa Petelo (Yr 11), Minia Prescott (Yr 7), Victor Nofoa (Yr 13) and Yacov Schmidt-Taala (Yr 13). Both bands performed admirably, with ‘The Islanders’ being chosen as one of 15 bands to progress onto the semi-finals. Their lively performance fused the classics ‘Sweet Inspiration’ and ‘Signed, Sealed, Delivered’ together. To wrap it all up, we had the Dance heats, which took place on Wednesday 8th August. Marcellin College entered two groups this year: The Munchkins, who performed a Hip Hop set to some throw-back jams, and Sei e Tasi o Maselino, who performed a fusion dance between traditional Samoan movements and Contemporary, with two live drummers. Both groups received positive feedback and were commended for their creativity. Well done to everyone who entered, we are proud of you all.

Congratulations / Mihi

Congratulations to Carlos Bello Casas-Cordero (Yr 11) on becoming a finalist in the Oversew Fashion awards in Carterton, Wairarapa. The garment had to be made out of recycled clothing, where he used 3 different hoodies and 3 different pairs of jeans to create this show stopper. The Judges liked his style of interesting cutting and nice contrast.

Awesome Carlos – Well Done!

Maths Week Right on the heels of the Interclass Mathex and the Australian Mathematics Competition, Maths takes place this week (13-17 August). Students will be participating in daily quizzes with prizes to be won. How about trying this one: The cost of feeding four dogs for three days is $60.00. Using the same food costs per dog per day, what would be the cost of feeding seven dogs for seven days? (Answer at very end of the newsletter)

They took on the other intermediates in Central Auckland. The girls had a great day out playing six games at Auckland Netball Centre under the hot winter sun! Although only winning two matches against Waiheke Primary, the girls fought hard with no substitutes for the whole tournament, and had some very narrow losses to Christ the King and St Joseph’s. Huge thanks to Year 13 Shamanda Time for umpiring at the tournament for the team. Shamanda’s commitment to helping the team throughout the season with umpiring and some coaching has been outstanding. Colour Fun Run - 22 September This year we are holding a colour fun run as our major funding raising activity. All students have been given an information booklet and parental letter. Each family can go on line and register their details, identifying Marcellin College as their school. The more each student can get sponsored the more choice they have in selecting a free gift from the rewards booklet. Simply share your online registration with your whānau and invite them to support our school. All money raised will go toward the refurbishment of our chapel. Make the day a whole family affair and share in the fun.

Best Wishes Our Nurse, Clare Corbett left us for a new life away from Auckland. 10 Students, along with Ms Waelen and Ms Parkinson travelled to Rotorua Monday 6 August to wish Ms Corbett all of the best in her new position.
