Do This. Don’t Do That.

The Ten Commandments are the most famous set of rules in history.

But what if our understanding of the Ten Commandments is, well, off the path?

What we in English refer to as the Old Testament Law, the Hebrews referred to as the Torah. In its original language, the Torah was understood not as a set of legal or moral prescriptions - do this, don’t do that - but as a relationship. Torah is really a directional word that alerts us how to pay attention to God’s purposes and promises and providences.

Instead of laws, as in a courtroom, consider the Ten Commandments as the top ten of a complete teaching guide from God. Its purpose is to keep us on the right path, and save us from our human tendency to wander off and get lost.

“Direct me in the path of your commands, for there I find delight.” Psalm 119:35

TODAY’S MESSAGE

The Path: Of Headlines and Heartaches Scripture: Exodus 20:16 Preachers: Vic Pentz, 8:45, 10:00, and 11:15 a.m. In the 10 a.m. service this morning, we celebrate the sacrament of baptism. Baptism of infants is one way we look to the future. As we welcome these children into our fellowship, we also pledge that we will nurture their faith in the hope that they will one day profess their own faith in Jesus Christ.

ASSEMBLE IN GOD’S NAME

Prelude..................................................................................................Nicholas Bowden

**Life of the Congregation

*Call to Worship Pastor: Come, let us sing for joy to the LORD; let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation. People: Let us come before him with thanksgiving and extol him with music and song. Pastor: For the LORD is the great God, the great King above all gods. People: In his hand are the depths of the earth, and the mountain peaks belong to him. The sea is his, for he made it, and his hands formed the dry land. Pastor: Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts. For he is our God and we are the people of his pasture, the flock under his care. ALL: Come, let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the LORD our Maker.

(from Psalm 95)

BAPTISM SUNDAY

Frankfurt lawyer Johann Schutz

(1640-1690), an authority on canon law and a leader in forming small Bible Study groups in the

German church, originally titled this hymn, “Hymn of Thanksgiving,”

adding Deut. 32:3 beneath it: “I will

proclaim the name of the Lord; O praise the greatness of our God!” For what do you praise God this

morning?

Placement of the Bible Sacrament of Baptism (10:00) Congregational Response (all singing, remain seated) Jesus Loves Me ...................................................................................jesus loves me Jesus loves me! This I know, for the Bible tells me so. Little ones to Him belong; they are weak but He is strong. Yes, Jesus loves me! Yes, Jesus loves me! Yes, Jesus loves me! The Bible tells me so.

Pastoral Prayer and the Lord’s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, And forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors, And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.

Offering Our Gifts This is My Father’s World.................................................................................terra patris arr. Diane Bish The Chancel Choir This is my Father’s world, and to my listening ears All nature sings, and round me rings the music of the spheres. This is my Father’s world, I rest me in the thought Of rocks and trees, of skies and seas, His hand the wonders wrought. This is my Father’s world, the birds their carols raise, The morning light, the lily white, declare their maker’s praise. This is my Father’s world, He shines in all that’s fair. In the rustling grass I hear Him pass, He speaks to me everywhere. This is my Father’s world, Why should my heart be sad, The Lord is King, let the heavens ring, God reigns, let the earth be glad.

This is My Father’s World sings the truth that all things under heaven are made by God and they reflect

his glory.

You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor. Jeremiah 32:9-12............................................................................Pew Bible, page 1229

I knew that this was the word of the Lord; so I bought the field at Anathoth from my cousin Hanamel and weighed out for him seventeen shekels of silver. I signed and sealed the deed, had it witnessed, and weighed out the silver on the scales. I took the deed of purchase—the sealed copy containing the terms and conditions, as well as the unsealed copy— and I gave this deed to Baruch son of Neriah, the son of Mahseiah, in the presence of my cousin Hanamel and of the witnesses who had signed the deed and of all the Jews sitting in the courtyard of the guard.

Charles Wesley wrote the words to O for a Thousand

Tongues on the first anniversary of his conversion, as his response to joy in

Christ. He originally wrote 18 stanzas.

And we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God. Not only so, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us.

At Lent, the custom is that we’re supposed to give something up. Every year, it’s the usual suspects: Soda. Alcohol. Sweets.

Swearing. Social media. Fast Food. Chips. And of course the king of all Lenten sacrifices: Chocolate.

Poor chocolate. The guilty anecdote to a stressful life.

But does a chocolate abstinence program really help others? This year, we have some tasty advice:

Go ahead and eat the chocolate. Serve instead. Get connected with one of Peachtree’s 30 Days of Serving.
