Scripture Acts 2:1-4 NT Page 119

Sermon I Believe in the Holy Spirit Rev. Jamie Armstrong What do Christians mean when they say with the creed, “I believe in the Holy Spirit”? The word “spirit” shows up about 500 times in the Bible. In the Old Testament, the Hebrew word usually translated as “spirit” is RUACH. In the New Testament, the Greek word is PNEUMA. The words have multiple meanings including breath, air, wind and of course, spirit.

John’s gospel in particular gives us several compelling images of the Spirit. Jesus calls the Spirit the PARAKLETE. The word is Greek and comes from two words—PARA which means close by, very near, beside and KALEO which means to call. It is a term that was used in some legal circles for an advocate who came alongside the accused, standing with them, so some translations translate the word as Advocate. It was also used to describe those who came alongside the hurting, holding them and comforting them, hence it is sometimes translated as Comforter or even Helper. But in John we also have Jesus saying that the Spirit will guide us into truth, help us remember what Jesus taught, and that the Spirit will be like rivers of spring water within us.

Jesus told his disciples that he would not leave them alone, but would send the Spirit. The Spirit is described as God’s immanent presence working in and on us, to lead, guide and shape us. The Spirit does for us what the Spirit did for those of old: He empowers us. He imbues us with gifts and abilities to help others and to serve him. He leads and guides us. He uses us and speaks through us.

Affirmation of Faith No. 882 The Apostle’s Creed I believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead.

On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, is seated at the right hand of the Father, and will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic** church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. **universal
