QUESTIONS BASED ON OUR READINGS *In his Transfiguration, Jesus invited three of his disciples (and us) to gaze at him. Do you ask yourself every night when you saw Jesus dur-ing the day? *We all need to go up the mountain ... to a place of silence, so we can better hear the voice of God. Why can’t we just stay there praying?
This Tuesday, March 14, we invite you to a special parish wide meeting at 6:30 PM in Denning Hall as we share with you the fruit of our Glorifying God in Gratitude and Gift capital cam-paign that was completed late last year. We are in a position to begin work on our school as early as this summer and on our church later this fall. We want to share with you the schedule for these projects and what we hope to ac-complish in the next few years. Due to the generosity of those who contribute to this campaign we have over $2.8 million in pledges and will be able to ac-complish the work in the celebra-tion phase of our campaign. Join us this Tuesday as we celebrate our accomplishments and share with you the schedule for the next few years. We have a lot to do and you will see a trans-formation on our parish campus! These are exciting times for our parish! This weekend we welcome the Men’s Christian Experience Weekend team and participants to our 11:00 AM Mass. The Chris-tian Experience Weekend has transformed Saint Paul the Apos-
tle parish during the last several decades. Many folks reading this bulletin have experience the life-changing message of this week-end. Much like the disciples in our gospel today, we are called to see Jesus as the fulfillment of all our hopes and desires. More im-portantly, we are to listen to him. A few years back Pope Francis commented on the “mountain top” experience of those disciples who saw Jesus transfigured be-fore their eyes and said: “Encounter with God in prayer inspires us anew to “descend the mountain” and return to the plain where we meet many brothers weighed down by fatigue, sick-ness, injustice, ignorance, poverty both material and spiritual. To these brothers in difficulty, we are called to bear the fruit of that ex-perience with God, by sharing the grace we have received. And this is curious. When we hear the Word of Jesus, when we listen to the Word of Jesus and carry it in our heart, this Word grows. Do you know how it grows? By giv-ing it to the other!” I pray that our Lenten experi-ence … this time of renewal … will enable all of us to take the time to listen more diligently to the voice of Jesus and inspire us to carry it in our hearts and ulti-mately to give it to others.
The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops says that “almsgiving means giving money or goods to the
poor and performing other acts of charity.” Many people in our parish complete incredible acts of charity far
greater than I achieve. Therefore, I am humbled as a member of the Worship and Prayer Commission to share
a few ideas about almsgiving with the hope that my personal testimony will provide encouragement to others
as they include this important practice in small and big ways during this Lenten season.
In James 1:22, we are instructed to “Be doers of the Word and not hearers only.” This is a guiding principle for
me as I want to serve as an ambassador of Christ and be Jesus’ hands and feet on earth. I have come to realize
that acts of charity are often needed by the people God has placed in our everyday lives. While donating to
missions such as Relevant Radio and other Catholic charities is still important to our family, almsgiving can
also be a blessing to those we encounter in our day-to-day routine. For instance, a single mother we know
works two jobs and 60 hours a week as she tries to make ends meet. We help her with car repairs, Christmas
funds, and other needs. We also have given money so she can treat herself to a new hair cut as we believe
helping the poor in spirit is also an important act of charity.
I like to say I have a “sugar ministry” as I bring cookies or other baked goods to those who need an emotional
boost, because many people are just as needy emotionally or spiritually as they are economically. Cooking can
indeed be a visible sign of love.
Ephesians 5:1 says we are to imitate God. We are to be a light in the darkness. Bringing flowers to a shut-in or
remembering a birthday of someone, who feels lonely, can show the love of our Lord to another.
These are personal examples of almsgiving, but we all are en-
couraged to find our own ways to donate time, talent and treas-
ure for the good of others. I don’t speak of these charitable ac-
tivities to boast, but to say they are examples of how we can
help others enjoy the “fragrance” of God’s love. I pray that fra-
grance attracts others to God and lingers long after we have left
the encounter with another. As you consider almsgiving this
Lent, be reminded of St. Paul’s words in his second letter to the
Thessalonians when he writes “May our Lord Jesus Christ
strengthen you in every good deed and word.”
