Corporate and Foundation Relations (CFR)
CFR Works with Deans, Faculty and Administration to:
1) Develop fundraising strategies for programs and projects
2) Identify potential corporate and foundation partners
3) Create target list of prospects
4) Contact and cultivate potential partners
5) Assist with proposal development and submission
6) Steward relationships post award
Develop Fundraising Strategies for Proposals and Projects:
Meet with faculty and staff to understand project goals & objectives
Understand how the work is new, and if similar work is taking place elsewhere
Identify current faculty contacts with business and industry
Determine expected project evaluation measures and results
2. Identify Potential Corporate and Foundation Partners:
Search Tufts database, Foundation Center, online sites
Corporate giving programs and corporate foundations
Corporations with similar R&D interests
General and special foundations, family foundations
3. Create target list of prospects
Understand realities through researchFormat, frequency, interests, restrictions in giving,
preferences for support, funding limits
Inside story—determine who else is applying
Seek out Tufts connections to program staff or board members
Maintain historical knowledge of the organization’s relationship with Tufts
4. Contact and cultivate potential partners:
Approach prospects - letters of inquiry, phone calls, meetings, full proposals
Work with faculty as the Tufts liaison with program officers at companies and foundations; initiate contacts with company R&D principals
Promote and create holistic relationshipsCorporate recruitment efforts on campusSponsored researchTech transfer and intellectual property opportunities
5. Assist with proposal development and submission:
Assist in effective proposal development Align with foundation guidelines Help positioning to organization’s mission Executive summaries Edit and proof read
Facilitate Proposal submission Process Internal Coordination Form Cover letters Non-profit certification CV’s, annual reports, Tufts audited budgets
Manage proposal follow-up and stewardship Thank you letters Reporting requirements
Keys to Funding Success:
Significant lead time before funding required
Follow guidelines and strict deadlines, especially with limited submissions
Submit proposals to multiple sources if appropriate
Maintain a relationship with program officers or appropriate organization representatives
Align Tufts capabilities with C/F needs and resources

Mission for working with faculty/staff
Identifying potential funding sources for their programs and research
Responsible for pre-award and non-fiscal post-award administration of grants and contracts
Collaborates with Tufts faculty on the development of grant proposals, focusing primarily on multi-investigator proposals
When to contact for corporation or foundation proposals
• When interested in finding a foundation or corporation to fund research
• When interested in a specific foundation
Whenever you are planning to apply for a foundation grant or contract, as soon as possible
When interested in applying for a large federal or non-federal grant opportunity.
How we work together
• Collaborates with ORA on all proposal submissions
• Assists with proposal development
• Works with OPD on proposal development as needed/requested
• Alerts CFR to foundation proposals
• Alerts OPD to limit submissions
• Asks faculty to alert ORA of proposal submission
• Alerts and works with CFR on large proposals
