Afew weeks ago, we werelooking for Garrison capsto wear, in order to becomethe Andrews Sisters for a

local talent show.  We looked every-where, then went on the Internet. (That’swhere we learned what they were cal-led and how to make them out of paper). The idea was sound and the largestpaper bags we found were used. It wasa good idea but the size turned out abit small for our heads.

Meanwhile, loyal readers of SeniorsToday, the O’Rourkes, called in andoffered us the real things! The capswere worn by Mr. O. during his waryears. We were so pleased when we metand received the caps. We asked themto attend the show. They couldn’t forthey were scheduled for a cruise.

Hundreds came out to view the in-credible array of well-rememberedcelebrities as the Talent Show per-formers found their way to the tablesonstage. There were 17 acts ready toperform. It didn’t matter that somewere from the 40s, some from the 50s,60s, 70s, and 80s eras. Emcee JudyGuillemette interviewed them as theyarrived a few minutes before the fabu-lous star-studded review began!

The following acts were onstage:Talents miming Carol Burnett, The Sis-ter Act with Whoopi Goldberg, DeanMartin, Doris Day, Gladys Knight, andThe Andrews Sisters.

Irv Owing and Paul Pollock per-formed an original rap tune about Gaituand the joint was jumpin! Joyce Nki wasoverwhelmed by this.

The next stars appearing were:Patsy Cline, Tiny Tim, Audrey Hepburn,Marilyn Monroe, and Liberace. Liber-ace and Stevie Wonder performed witha rendition of Ebony And Ivory. Liber-ace walked away leaving Stevie Wonderblindly fumbling with his cane in the air.Liberace returned and pulled him offthe stage by his cane. It was hilarious!

Iam scheduled to make a presenta-tion at the Volusia County PublicLibrary at City Island to educatethe public about important legal

issues and other interesting matters. The public is invited to attend.

Monday, April 20th at 3 P.M. Scams, Shams, & Flimflams

In this talk, we concentrate on howto protect yourself from theft of yourmoney and identity as well as damageto your credit. We learned as childrenthat if it seems too good to be true, itprobably is.

We also have heard that nothing isfree. There's always a catch. There'salways something expected by the partygiving something free, even if it's onlya hope for future or additional business. The risks of attack to your credit, aswell as outright theft of your moneyand property, have increased exponen-tially in recent years.

You may be contacted by impostersposing as banks, lenders, buyers andsellers of real estate, credit card com-panies, credit agencies, brokers, lotter-ies and many others. As we age, wemust be aware of additional dangers, including dishonest care-takers andthe oddly attractive desire to gamble,

with lotteries, sweepstakes, and similarvoluntary acts.

I see people every day who have beentaken for their money or have spenttheir money. Often they have lost theirentire life savings. Many times theyknow and realize that it is too good tobe true, but they fall for it anyway. Manyget taken more than once, becauseonce a scammer realizes the person iseasy prey, they keep returning for more.It often seems surprising, but I canassure you that it happens all the time.

We will discuss how to address phonecalls, door-to-door contacts, and otherattacks. We will also discuss the addi-tional challenges in protecting your-self as you become more vulnerablewith advanced age.

Service Station... It’s a beautifulsound... a valuable concept, but how long has it been sinceyou’ve had any real service?

If you shop at a cookie cutter chainstore you can forget it. You will save a nickelon the stuff you buy, but you will sacrificea prized, shared experience... the privilegeof service by a proud professional.

My experiences of late are just plainamusing. Recently my wife was windowshopping at a ladies shop. There, on theglass door, was this message... ‘This shopis owned by ‘Jane Doe’. If you don’t likeher, better still if she does not like you, itwould be best if you don’t come in.And... I raised my children. I’m not hereto babysit yours… and... No Set Hours. We couldn’t believe it. Was it a joke? Evi-dently not. This shop keeper wanted yourbusiness only if you suited her profile. Sur-prise, the shop is now closed.

It gets worse. Just try calling the PostOffice or the telephone company. You’llbe lost in the menu maze and they won’teven notice. I recently used the drive inwindow at my bank... a national chain...and when the clerk failed to carry out oneof the transactions, I questioned him. Hisresponse... oh... we never pay any atten-tion to that. We just run’em through thecancellation machine. Easy for him to say... it was my money. Shame on the bank!

My favorite happened at a leathershop. I went in to have a belt punched sothat I could hitch my britches up tighter. Iasked the clerk to please punch a coupleholes about a half inch apart. He lookedkind of sheepish and stepped aside as ahigher authority stepped up to wait onme. (Notice I didn’t say, serve me. Obvi-ously, service was not his thing!)

This man, apparently the owner lookedat my belt and said, ‘I won’t do that’. Dumb-founded, I asked, ‘Why not?’ He answered,‘That’s not the proper way to do it.’ ‘First,’he said, ‘I’d have to remove the buckle, cut about an inch off the end, and then re-stitch the buckle in place, otherwise you’llhave too much belt sticking out and itwon’t look right.

‘It’s not worth that,’ I said… adding,‘we’re talking about a $3 belt. I just wantyou to punch two holes in it so I can useit to hold up my pants.’

‘Can’t do it,’ he says.Pointing to the leather punch laying very

obviously on his bench, I asked, ‘Well...would you loan or rent me your punch soI could do it for myself?’

‘Nope,’ he replied!‘Let me see now,’ I said. ‘Have I got this

right? I’m a potential customer with moneyin my hand, and you won’t do what I wantand you won’t rent me your tool so that Ican do it for myself... is the right?’

‘That’s right,’ he said.Still dis-believing, he stunned me by

adding…‘Come back when you want it

done right.’ ‘That won’t be a problem,’ Isaid. ‘I won’t be back.’ I left, the asso-ciate tucked his chin.  He’d seen thisdrama played out previously.

Now don’t get me wrong. I appreciatecraftsmanship. Beautiful leather work isa thing to behold.  We are not talkingabout your Sunday best here. We’re talk-ing a glorified leather string... just to hitchup my britches.

Franchises, minimum wage, and laborpractices have played havoc with ser-vice. There’s not a lot around anymore.

I remember a shop where years ago Ibought my suits and ties. When I walkedin several salesmen would call myname. Good morning Mr. Goldtrap. Comeright in.  They’d offer a refreshment, chat a moment, and then ask if I wantedto browse awhile or look at somethingspecific.  When I’d made my selectionthey custom fit the outfit. They brought aselection of shirts and ties... all selectedwith-in my known preferences. I wasbeing serviced and it felt good.

When a new shipment of my favoritesuit brand arrived, I’d be called before thepublic got a look. If my schedule pre-vented my stopping in during regularhours, I’d be invited in at my convenienceand a ready salesman would be anxious tomeet my needs.  They got my businessover and over again as long as I lived inthat city. I recently found a shop like thatin my new town. I’ll go back often.

Good service comes from an atti-tude. Attitudes can be natural or they canbe corporate built, but they make all thedifference in the world to a companybuilding a reputation. I like the EnterpriseRental Car commercials. ‘We deliver’…and they do.

There’s a place for cookie cutter fastfood, but does that mean the clerks can’tbe courteous?  In fact the opposite istrue. Visit a Chick-fil-A sometime soon. They chose their young employees care-fully and train them to be professional.Good for them. There’s something to besaid for craftsmanship, but should thatover-ride ‘king customers’ wishes?

Reminds me of the time I ordered break-fast from a grouchy waitress. I asked forbacon and eggs and a few kind words. Ina few minutes she approached my tableand almost threw the plate at me. The foodlooked fine, but I had to ask... ‘Where arethe kind words? Without missing a beat, she said, “Don’t eat the eggs!”

Q: I have a little porcelain doll thatwas given to me about 30 years ago. Ihave looked in a number of doll booksto try to identify and get the value ofit, but have not been able to find any-thing. Can you help me?

—Cyndy, Barre, Vermont

A: Identifying dolls can be frustrat-ing, since so many were made and manyof the manufacturer's marks are similar. One of the better doll books is the BlueBook: Dolls & Values by Jan Foulke andpublished by Holly House Books. Thisreference has been called the bible ofdoll collecting, and you might be ableto find your doll referenced in it. If thatfails, perhaps you might want to contactan expert. Sara Bernstein might be ableto help you. Her contact is 732-536-4101, and www.sarabernsteindolls.comThere are more than 2,000 dolls refer-enced at this website.

***Q: I have a salesman sample of a

Kerr blue enamel wood-burning range. It is in good condition except that the

temperature gauge is missing. Howmuch is it worth, and where can I sell it?

—Marvis, Albuquerque, NMA: Have you contacted antiques deal-

ers in your area? Richard Richardsonalso might be able to help you, since heis an expert in stoves and related items. His address is Good Time Stove Com-pany, P.O. Box 306, Goshen, MA 01032.It is always good manners to enclosea self-addressed, stamped envelope.

***Q: I bought a 6-inch ruler with a

black velvet sleeve at a yard sale about20 years ago. It was made by Tiffany &Company and is sterling. I think it mightbe part of a set. Any help you can give?

—Cliff, Hartford, ILA: Throughout the 1940s and 50s,

Tiffany & Company offered desk sets intheir catalogs, and I think you are prob-ably correct when you suggest it is partof a set. It is impossible for me to placea value on it. My suggestion is to showit to several dealers for their opinion.

Have you had a cup of coffeewith a cop yet? If not, let thisserve as your personal invi-tation to join us for some hot

coffee and an informal chat about—well, whatever’s on your mind.

In at least 30 states across the coun-try, law enforcement agencies are embrac-ing the Coffee With A Cop concept. It’sa program that’s designed to maintainopen lines of communication with res-idents to make sure that law enforcementis in tune with the public safety needs ofthe community. How better to do that thanby citizens chatting with law enforce-ment officers in a relaxed and informalsetting about public safety issues overa hot beverage. For law enforcement,it’s a way to connect with the community, answer questions and hear first-handfrom residents about public safety issuesand concerns. For the public, it’s an op-portunity to meet face-to-face with lawenforcement officers and discuss waysto work together to help keep the com-munity safe.

The Sheriff’s Office is among sev-eral local law enforcement agenciesthat have adopted the Coffee With ACop program and brought it here toVolusia County. The Sheriff’s Office

already has hosted eight events—wehave hosted two in Deltona, two in De-Bary, and one in DeLand, DeLeonSprings, New SmyrnaBeach, and OrmondBeach. So far, attendance at the eventshas been rewarding. We’ve received plentyof kind remarks and pats on the backand have also heard some thoughtsabout some public safety concerns thatneed more law enforcement attention.

For those of you who’ve joined us atone of our events, we thank you for yourparticipation. The in person exchangeshave been a good investment of time, both for the citizens we serve and ourdeputies. Coffee With A Cop is a greatway to get to know the law enforcementofficers who patrol your neighborhoodwhile also strengthening the crime-fight-ing bond between the community andpolice. Please check our website andFacebook page for announcementsabout future events in your area. Wehope to see you there!

Mary Jean Wall, turfwriter for the Lexing-ton Herald-Leader formore than 35 years,

has documented the fascinating truestory of vice and power in the GildedAge South. At the center of her newbook Madam Belle: Sex, Money, AndInfluence In A Southern Brothel is BelleBrezing, a woman who had borrowedmoney to set up her own brothel, accu-mulating wealth, power, and fame.

By the time Belle was 15 years old, she’d had a baby, had watched hermother die, and been evicted. Duringthe 1880s, there were limited careerpaths for young women, especiallythose who lacked a formal educationand social connections. While workingat Jenny Hill’s bawdy house in Lex-ington, which was run out of the formerhome of first lady Mary Todd Lincoln,Belle acquired the skills, manners, andbusiness contacts that allowed her toascend to power and influence as aninternationally known madam.

Belle opened her own brothel andleveraged that first house and her earlyconnections with its wealthy patrons

to purchase an impressive structure at59 Megowan Street. The grand openingin 1891 became legendary in Kentucky.

Visitors were metwith the sounds ofan orchestra as theysampled an elegantbuffet including im-ported wines and nicechampagne. It washere that fashionableinternational travel-

ers, horsemen, and civil leaders climbedthe five steps to enter what wouldquickly become one of the most intri-guing business destinations in the South.

Maryjean Wall began her researchof Belle Brezing and her infamous man-sion in the 1960s. Since Belle Brezingdid not keep a diary and never gaveinterviews during her lifetime, it wasa difficult task, but Wall has achievedthe almost impossible. This engagingbiography comes as close to revealingthe life of Belle as is possible.

Dear Paw’s Corner: Our guinea pigdied suddenly yesterday. She was fine, then she took short and deep breaths, and wouldn't eat or come out of herigloo. A couple hours laterwe found her passed away, lying on her side. We don'tunderstand what happened. It was Sunday, and we haveno small-animal vet in ourtown. Just curious if youhave any idea what mayhave happened.

—Diana, via e-mail

Dear Diana: I'm sorry to hear aboutthe death of your pet. Sadly, guinea pigscan fall victim to a number of differentillnesses, and can do so shockingly fast.Sometimes, they show few to no out-ward symptoms. Respiratory illnesses, especially pneumonia, strike guinea pigshard. Adenovirus, an illness that doesn'talways directly cause death, can lead topneumonia as the guinea pig's immunesystem weakens.

Of course having not seen your petI can not make a diagnosis but Guinea

pigs also can suffer a stroke or heartattack at any age, often for no appar-ent reason.

When a guinea pig (or hamster, orother pet rodent) begins to show signs

of distress—such as weightloss (more than 2 ouncesis cause for an immediatevet visit), hiding away inher igloo or refusing to eat—getting help quickly isimportant, and that meansgetting your pet to the vetwithin hours or even min-utes to give it the very bestchance for recovery.

In this case, a veterinarian wasn'tavailable right away. Wheek CareGuinea Pig Rescue lists a few first-aiditems to keep on hand here: http://www.wheekcare.org/first-aid.html as wellas extensive tips on health signs to watchfor. There is mounting evidence thatexercise can help to reduce therisk of certain diseases and con-ditions, including Alzheimer’s

disease, diabetes, heart disease, osteoporo-sis, and arthritis. In fact, numerous studieshave shown that diet and exercise canalso help ward off cognitive problems andmemory loss, while improving sleep andboosting mood and self-confidence.

Many believe exercise plays the singlemost important role in slowing the agingprocess. In fact, there is even some indica-tion that exercise combined with a balanced(as opposed to trendy) diet can actuallywork to reverse the aging process, allow-ing people to remain healthy and activewell into their 70s and 80s.

Dr. Henry Lodge, one of the leading pro-ponents of this theory, has written exten-sively on how the body is in a constant stateof decay and repair. As the body ages, thechemical responsible for decay works fasterthan the chemical responsible for regener-ation. Exercise reverses that equation andallows the body to repair itself at a fasterrate, which Dr. Lodge says can help slowdown and even reverse the aging process.

Unfortunately, Americans have been get-ting more and more sedentary over the yearswhile turning to quick fixes to make up forit. To fight this tendency, Chris Crowley, who, along with Dr. Lodge, is the author of

the best-selling book Younger Next Year, suggests making exercise a part of yourdaily routine, something that’s up there withbrushing your teeth and combing your hair.

If willpower alone isn’t enough to getyou there, Crowley holds a Younger NextYear Total Immersion Week at the AspenClub each year. The program is aimed atbusy professionals who don’t have thetime to set up a program on their own. It’sthe sort of quick fix that’s designed tohave long-lasting benefits as the programtrains participants on how to incorporatethe concepts of Younger Next Year intotheir everyday lives.

“They give you everything you need tobe successful at home,” notes Jill Belco-nis, a Chicago area CEO who attendedlast year. “Aspen is such a beautiful setting, too,” she notes, “which really fits in with thetheme that this is not just about extend-ing your life but enjoying it, too.”
