TwoCentennialDistrictstudentsselectedasGreatYoungCitizensThecityofGreshamrecentlyhonoredagroupofoutstandinghighschoolstudentsduringtheannualGreatYoungCitizenAwardceremonyheldintheCouncilChambers.
CongratulationstoSarahAli,CentennialHighSchoolandNatashaWaters,CentennialParkSchoolonreceivingthe2019GreatYoungCitizenAward.AliandWatersweretwooftheeightlocalstudentsrepresentinglocalhighschoolswithinthecommunity.Thestudentswerehonoredfortheiracademicsuccess,hoursspentvolunteeringandcommitmenttosupportingpeers.
SarahAli(picturedbelowwithGreshamMayorShaneBemis),whosefamilymovedherefromIraq,isthefirstofherfamilytobebornintheUnitedStates.Sheisadedicatedstudent,leader,andcivic-mindedindividual.ActiveinFutureBusinessLeadersofAmerica(FBLA),Sarahandherteammatesdevelopedabusinessfinancialplanandplacedthirdatthestatecompetitionandsixthatnationalsin2017.In2018theydevelopedanotherbusinessfinancialplanthatplacedsecondatthestatecompetitionandwerefinalistatthenationalFBLAcompetition.
Asaleader,Sarahwasthe2017OregonFBLAMt.HoodRegionalVicePresidentandchapterChiefOperatingOfficer.ThisyearsheistheCHSFBLAchapterExecutiveVicePresident,NationalHonorSocietyPresident,andPresidentoftheYouthAdvisoryCouncil,EventMangerfortheHumanTraffickingAwarenessClub,andisastateofficerfortheOregonStudentVoice.Inaddition,sheisa
memberofKeyClub.SarahassistsintheoperationofFoodforFamiliesandhasvolunteeredateventsfortheMarchofDimesandEagleScreamFest.
ShelaunchedtheDonatingtoRefugeescampaignthathelpedraisemorethan10,000articlesofclothingforrefugeesandwrotenineHow-to-GuidesforstudentstogetpoliticallyactivethroughtheOregonStudentVoice.SarahisthePresidentoftheGreshamYouth
AdvisoryCouncil,andislaunchingacitywidesexualharassmentandmentalhealthawarenesscampaignwithherteam;thecampaigniscalledStepUpSpeakUp.
SarahisoneoftherecipientsoftheCoca-ColaFoundationScholarshipandisa2019Coca-Colascholar.Studentsarerecognizedfortheircapacitytoleadandserve,aswellastheircommitmenttomakingasignificantimpactontheirschoolsandcommunities.Aspartofthescholarship,shewilltraveltoAtlanta,GAforaleadershipinstitute.
NatashaWinters(picturedbelowwithAjaiHuja,CentennialParkSchoolPrincipalandGreshamMayorShaneBemis)isasenioratCentennialParkSchool.Natashaisagreatstudent,beingnamedtothehonorrolleveryquartersinceshewasinmiddleschool.Sheispopularamongstudentsandstaff,bringingasmiletoeveryone.Thispastyearshehasalsoworkedapayingjobattheschool,makingsuretoshowupearlyandbediligentinherduties.

fromGhanaaspartofanassemblyfundedbytheschool’sPTO.TheexcitingandinformativeperformancewasledanddirectedbyAlexanderAddy,anexperiencedinstructor,professionaldancerandaccomplishedpercussionist.Studentswereabletoparticipateandexperiencetherhythmsandsoundsofover15uniquelydifferentdrumsaswellasmanyotherinstrumentswhichincludedflutes,bells,rhythmicrattlesandtheGyil(anAfricanXylophone).
Dancetroupemembersperformtraditionalandacrobaticdancemovementswithbrightlycoloredcostumesandtraditionalappareltoallowstudentstofullycapturethefeel,tasteandrichnessofanothercountry.

ViolencePreventioninSchoolsTheviolencethatoccursinU.S.neighborhoodsandcommunitieshasfounditswayinsidetheschoolhousedoors.Whilewecantakesolaceinknowingthatschoolsareamongthesafestplacesforyoungpeople,schoolofficials,administratorsandteachersmustdomoretopreventviolence,asitisapreventabledangertochildren.Educationandtrainingisthefirststepinpreventingschoolviolence,andasafeschoolplanisamongthemanysolutionsthatwillassistincurbingthisnationalepidemic.
Theseplansaddressbehavioralandpropertyprotection,andfosteranenvironmentwherechildrencanlearnandteacherscaneducatewithoutfear.Aswithallviolencepreventioninitiatives,thebestplansinvolvetheentireschoolandthecommunityatlarge.
EarlyWarningSignsofViolenceTherearemanyearlywarningsignsinmostcasesofviolence,behavioraloremotionalsignsthat,whentakenincontext,cansignalatroubledchild.Suchsignsmaynotindicateaseriousproblemormaynotnecessarilymeanthatachildispronetoviolencetowardthemselvesorothers.However,theycanprovideschoolofficialswiththecuetocheckonthechildfurtherandaddresshisorherneeds.Earlywarningsignscanalsoallowforschoolofficialstoassistachildbeforeasituationbecomesproblematic.
Teachers,administratorsandotherschoolstaffmembersarenotalwaystrainedtoprofessionallyanalyzeachild’sfeelingsandmotives.Yet,theseindividualsareonthefrontlineswhenitcomestoobservingtroublesomebehaviorandmakingreferralstotheappropriate
professionals.Therefore,itisnotasurprisethateffectiveschoolstakespecialcareintrainingtheirentirestaffonunderstandingandidentifyingearlywarningsignsofviolentbehavior.
PrinciplesforIdentifyingtheEarlyWarningSignsofSchoolViolenceEducatorsandfamiliescanincreasetheirabilitytorecognizeearlywarningsignsbyestablishingaclose,caringandsupportiverelationshipwithstudents.Thisinvolvesgettingtoknowthemwellenoughtobeawareoftheirneeds,feelings,attitudesandbehavioralpatterns.Then,educatorsandparentscanreviewschoolrecordsforpatternsofbehaviororsuddenchangesinbehaviorthatmayleadtoviolence.Theycanalsoensurethatearlywarningsignsarenotmisinterpreted.TheU.S.DepartmentofEducationrecommendsthefollowingwhenanalyzingearlywarningsigns:
• Understandviolenceandaggressionwithinitscontext.Theseareexpressionsofemotionsthatmayexistwithintheschool,homeorlargersocialenvironmentonly.Forthosechildrenwhoareatriskforaggressionandviolence,certainenvironments
ViolencePreventioninSchools
andsituationsmaysetthemoff,buttheymaynormallybeverycalm,non-aggressiveindividuals.
• Avoidstereotypes.Beawareoffalseindicationsofviolenceincludingrace,socio-economicstatus,cognitiveoracademicabilityorphysicalappearance.Suchstereotypescanunfairlyharmchildren,especiallywhentheschoolcommunityactsuponthem.
• Viewwarningsignswithinadevelopmentalcontext.Childrenatdifferentlevelsofdevelopmenthavevaryingsocialandemotionalcapabilities,andmayexpressthemselvesdifferentlybasedonthat.Youmustknowwhatdevelopmentallytypicalbehaviorlookslikesothatactionsarenotmisinterpreted.
• Understandthatchildrentypicallyexhibitmultiplewarningsigns.Mostchildrenwhoaretroubledandatriskforaggressionexhibitmorethanonewarningsign,repeatedly,andforanincreasingintensityovertime.Therefore,itisimportantnottooverreacttosinglesigns,wordsoractions.
IndicationsofViolenceAllofthefollowingearlywarningsignsarenotsufficientontheirowntopredictaggressionandviolence.Inaddition,thesesignsshouldonlyservetoaidandidentifychildrenwhomayneedassistancebyaprofessional.However,schoolofficialsshouldtakeactionwhentheynoticeaconjunctionofthefollowingdisplayedbyachild:
• Socialwithdrawal
• Excessivefeelingsofisolationandbeingalone
• Feelingsofrejection
• Beingavictimofviolence
• Feelingsofbeingpickedonandpersecuted
• Lowschoolinterestandpooracademicperformance
• Expressionofviolenceinwritinganddrawings
• Uncontrolledanger
• Patternsofimpulsiveandchronichitting,intimidatingandbullying
• Historyofdisciplinaryproblems
• Pasthistoryofviolenceandaggressivebehavior
• Intolerancefordifferencesandprejudicialattitudes
• Drugand/oralcoholuse
• Affiliationwithgangs
• Inappropriateaccesstoorpossessionofafirearm
• Makingseriousthreatsofviolence
Unlikeearlywarningsigns,imminentwarningsignsmayindicatethatachildisveryclosetobehavinginawaythatispotentiallydangeroustothemselvesand/orothers.Imminentwarningsignsrequireanimmediateresponse,andincludethefollowing:
• Seriousphysicalfightingwithpeersorfamilymembers
• Severedestructionofproperty
• Severerageforseeminglyminorreasons
• Detailedthreatsoflethalviolence
• Possessionand/oruseoffirearmsorotherweapons
• Otherself-injuriousbehaviorsorthreatsofsuicide
• Adetailedplantoharmothers,particularlyifthechildhasahistoryofaggressionorhasattemptedtocarryoutthreatsinthepast
SafeSchoolPlanEffectiveschoolscreateaviolencepreventionandresponseplanandformateamthatcanensurethatitisimplementedproperly.Asoundviolencepreventionprogramreflectsthecommonanduniqueneedsof
ViolencePreventioninSchools
educators,students,familiesandthecommunitythatitserves.Italsooutlineshowtheschoolcommunity(administrators,teachers,parents,students,busdrivers,supportstaff,etc.)canbepreparedtospotthebehavioralandemotionalsignsindicatingthatachildistroubled.Theplanshoulddetailhowschoolandcommunityresourcescanbeusedtocreatesafeenvironmentsandtomanageresponsestoincidentsrangingfromacutethreatstoviolentsituations.
Aneffectiveplanincludesthefollowing:
• Descriptionsoftheearlywarningsignsofpotentiallyviolentbehavior(listedabove)andproceduresforidentifyingchildrenwhoexhibitthesesigns
• Descriptionsofeffectivepreventionpracticestobuildafoundationfortheprogramandenhancestheeffectivenessofitsinterventions
• Descriptionsofinterventionstrategiesthattheschoolcommunitycanusetohelptroubledchildren.Thisincludesearlyinterventionsandresourcesforstudentswithmildtoseverebehavioralproblemsormentalhealthneeds
• Compliancewithfederal,stateandlocallaws,andalsosupportsfamiliesandthelocalschoolboard
• Trainingandsupportinitiativesexecutedonaregularbasis
• Assessmenttoolsforanalyzingandmonitoringtheviolencepreventionefforts
CreatingaPreventionandResponseTeamEstablishingaschool-basedteamtooverseethepreparationandimplementationofthepreventionandresponseplancanbeveryhelpful.Thiscoreteamshouldensurethateverymemberofthelargerschoolcommunityacceptsandadoptstheviolencepreventionandresponseplan.Typicallytheteamincludesthebuildingadministrator,generalandspecialeducationteachers,parentsandpupilsupportservicerepresentatives(schoolpsychologist,socialworkeror
counselor).
Inaddition,crisisresponseplanningcanbegreatlyenhancedwiththepresenceofacentralofficeadministrator,securityofficerandyouthofficerorcommunitypolicedepartmentmember.Thecoreteamshouldcoordinatewithanyschooladvisoryboardsthatarealreadyinplace.
RespondingtoaCrisisCrisisresponseisanimportantcomponentofaviolencepreventionandresponseplan.Effectiveschoolsprovideadequatepreparationfortheircoreviolencepreventionandresponseteam,bynotonlyplanningwhattodowhenviolencestrikes,butalsoensuringthatstaffandstudentsknowhowtobehavewhenviolentsituationsarise.
Thefirstthingtorememberisthatweapons,bombthreatsorexplosions,fights,naturaldisasters,accidentsandsuicidescallforimmediate,plannedactionandlong-term,post-crisisintervention.Planningforsuchcontingenciesreduceschaosandtraumaduringtheincident.Thus,theplanmustincludecontingencyprovisions,includingthefollowing:
• Evacuationprocedurestoprotectstudentsandstafffromharm.Schoolsmustidentifysafeareaswherestudentsandstaffshouldgoduringacrisis.Drillsshouldbeperformedregularlysothatallindividualsintheschoolknowhowtoproceedinaviolentsituation.
• Aneffectivecommunicationsystemmustbeestablishedsothatindividualshavedesignatedrolesandresponsibilitiestoreduceandeliminateconfusion.
• Aprocessforsecuringimmediateexternalsupportfromlawenforcementandotherrelevantcommunityresources.
Crisesinvolvingsuddenviolenceinschoolsaretraumaticbecausetheyaregenerallyrareandunexpected.Inthe
ViolencePreventioninSchools
wakeofsuchacrisis,membersoftheschoolcommunityareasked–andaskthemselves–whatcouldhavebeendonetopreventtheincident?Yet,bybeingprepared,schoolscantakesolaceinknowingthattheytookactionstoreducetheriskofviolenceandprotectthosewithintheirwalls.
