all in the beef industry lately, you’ve likely been hearing very positive mes-sages. We are only a month into 2014, and already we are seeing some very interesting things happening in the cattle markets. On one side, we are see-ing an explosion of prices south of the border and some very positive prices in Canada as well; on the other hand, the extremely wide basis and the shadow of the American COOL legislation is hanging over our Canadian industry.

At the very beginning of 2014, the Chief Economist with Farm Credit Canada, JP Gervais, put out an article, “FCC Offers Five Agriculture Econom-ic Issues to Watch in 2014.”

Here is a brief summary: 1) Farmland Values in North Amer-

ica: could plateau in 2014 according to Gervais, mainly due to lower grain prices which will result in less expan-sion by large grain operations.

2) Trade Deals: deals such as the Comprehensive Economic Trade Agree-ment (CETA) between Canada and the European Union, and the Trans Pacifi c Partnership (TPP) will provide new opportunities. Gervais says, “Between these two agreements, every sector of Canadian agriculture will have oppor-tunities and face some challenges. We need to start preparing to manage our

business in a new environment.” 3) American Politics and Econom-

ics: there is uncertainty south of the border, including the partial shutdown of the U.S. government in late 2013 and disputes in the U.S. legislature which are slowing down the process of renew-ing the 2008 Farm Bill. Gervais expects things to improve in 2014 south of the border.

4) Equipment Sales Gearing Down: After fi ve years of very strong equip-ment sales, we will likely be seeing a retreat in sales in 2014. Gervais predicts that in the short term, prices will likely stay steady, but could soften if produc-ers decide to put their profi ts elsewhere in the coming year.

5) Canadian Beef Gets Bullish: Canadian livestock producers, the beef sector specifi cally, should expect healthy returns over the next couple of years, says Gervais. Beef prices will be stronger due to the dynamics of supply and demand. American cattle numbers will, of course, have a great infl uence on our Canadian market, and the U.S. herd has shrunk by 5% over the past two years. Our Canadian herd is stable and is in position to rebound. The demand for animal protein is strong in markets such as China and the Euro-pean trade deal also holds potential for Canadian beef.

Recent market reports and news

stories on the beef markets have also been optimistic and it is encouraging for the beef industry to be seeing this positivity! To expand on Gervais’ bull-ish predictions for the beef industry for 2014, I referred to a few other sources to expand on the forces that will infl u-ence our markets over the next year.

Traditionally, there is always a pick-up in beef demand following the holiday season. Retailers are looking to re-stock their shelves, and consum-ers are looking to serve beef to their families. This could be one explanation for the signifi cant jump in prices, but as experts are saying, in the fi rst few weeks of January, we’ve already seen what most analysts were predicting for February and March of this year. Market analyst Anne Wasko, of Gate-way Livestock was featured on a Real Agriculture interview; she commented

on how analysts did expect an increase in prices, but not the ‘explosion’ we’ve seen. She said that the reason boils down to a tight supply of cattle. The packing plants are currently mak-ing money, and passing on their extra costs of buying higher priced cattle to the retailer. Anne also explained that the entire meat system is priced high right now, including pork and chicken, which is positive for moving beef in the grocery stores. Over the past several weeks, Anne commented that the packer is making money, and so are the feedlots, which will bring strong prices into the feeder markets, as we see auction mart volumes picking up into February. Anne also feels that the pros-pect of exporting Canadian beef to new markets will help to hold up demand in Canada, and we’ve already seen a strong demand in areas such as the

Greater China region, which became the second largest buy of Canadian beef in 2013, behind the U.S.

How things in the American market continue to unfold will be interesting to watch, as well as infl uential on what happens in our Canadian markets. The Jan 17th, 2014 Canfax Weekly Report comments on how the U.S. market has been enjoying prices much higher than in Canada. Their cow herd is fi nally show-ing signs of stabilization, including very high prices for bred cows. An article from Drover’s Cattle Network states that the state of Nebraska is seeing several new feedlots being built by young producers. Cattle numbers have been picking up in the northern states with more access to grazing and feed grains.

One factor that is causing our Canadian market to look less positive compared to the U.S., is the basis, which is much wider than it should be. Accord-

ing to the Canfax weekly report for Jan 17th, 2014, the basis has not been this weak since 2005, when the border was still closed to live cattle exports. Country of Origin Labelling (COOL) is largely to blame for the weakness in the basis. Last year at this time, the basis was also weak due to the closure of the Brooks plant. Brian Perillat of Canfax comments that if Canadian feeder cattle continue to move south, this will create tighter Canadian cattle supplies and this may help the basis to stabilize from where it is now over the long term.

The delay in passing a new U.S. Farm Bill has had an infl uence on our Canadian markets as it is the major factor holding up any movement on the requests to have the COOL rules removed. It is a very interesting situation, full of confusion and politics. On one hand, many Ameri-can producer groups and special interest groups have been lobbying the Farm Bill

decision-makers to keep the COOL rules in place, while the American packers, the Canadians and Mexicans have been work-ing to get the rule eliminated. In general, strong opposition for all segments of the farm bill is exactly what has kept the U.S. farm bill from being passed so far. In an article on the U.S. Farm Bill by Chuck Jolley, the Farm Bill situation can be lik-ened to a ‘traffi c jam,’ where congressper-sons are being pulled in many directions by many different special interest groups.

The Canadian Cattlemen’s Associa-tion is speculating that at least two large U.S. packing plants could shut down in early 2014 as a result of COOL. Not only will this continue to affect Canadian producers, but it will also affect Ameri-can producers. If these packing plants shut down, it will inevitably lead to the American feedlots that supply cattle to the plants to struggle and likely shut down as well. After attending many state cattle meetings over the past several months, CCA staff report that many American cow-calf producers are now against COOL, as they realize the impacts that will result over the long term with their feedlots and packing plants. The Cana-dian Cattlemen’s Association has been working diligently along with other Ca-nadian producer groups as well as groups in Mexico, to get the COOL legislation changed so that U.S. consumers still have origin information, but the labels won’t be discriminatory against Canadian and Mexican livestock and costly for the

packing plants. It was hoped that retalia-tory measures could be avoided, and that the U.S. Congress would make a decision to support free trade of livestock in North America, but on January 27th, the U.S. Congress made progress towards passing the new Farm Bill that did not include any revisions to the current COOL legisla-tion. According to the statement from the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association on January 27th, Canada will continue with the World Trade Organization (WTO) process to have the WTO panel decide whether the U.S. is in compliance or not with their WTO obligations. The govern-ment of Canada could then target U.S. goods for retaliatory tariffs, including meats, produce and packaged food.

Despite the issues with COOL and its effects, the outlook for the beef industry is positive in Canada and many factors point to a profi table year for 2014. In an article from January 27th on the Canadian Cattle-men Magazine website, market analyst Jerry Klassen summed up the fi rst few weeks of the new year very well, “Newton’s fi rst law of motion continues to describe the cattle market, as an object in motion tends to stay in motion until acted upon by another force.” A tight supply, strong demand for beef, includ-ing new possible markets, low feed grain prices, and a weaker Canadian dollar are all factors that are in our favour. One thing, that we can always be sure of, the year ahead will be interesting with no lack of excitement in the beef business!


Beef Cattle Research CouncilDo growth promoting, antimicro-

bial or other veterinary drugs affect the food safety of Canadian beef?

Veterinary drugs are regulated by the Food and Drugs Act and Regula-tions. All veterinary drugs go through a Health Canada approval process before they are licensed for use. The Health Canada Veterinary Drug Direc-torate (VDD) evaluates and monitors the safety, quality and effectiveness, and sets standards for the use of veterinary drugs to ensure that, when used according to label directions, they are safe for both animals and humans.

Label and veterinary directions indicate proper administration doses and routes for veterinary products, as well as pre-slaughter withdrawal times, which ensure that the product has been metabolized by the animal before the meat is harvested. Most drugs are completely metabolized during the prescribed minimum num-ber of days between the last admin-istration of the drug and slaughter, and therefore leave no residue.

What are maximum residue levels (MRLs)?

There is a zero tolerance for residues of many veterinary drugs in beef allowed for human consump-tion. Some veterinary products have standardized maximum residue levels (MRLs) established by Health Canada. MRLs are minute and set far below the amount that could pose a human health concern when ingested daily over a lifetime.

Health Canada is one of 185 government members of the Co-dex Alimentarius Commission. The Codex was established by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations and the World Health Organization (WHO) to de-velop harmonized international food standards, guidelines, and codes of practice to protect the health of consumers and ensure fair food trade practices.

Can consumers be confident Canadian beef is safe from drug residues?

The CFIA randomly samples the food supply for potential contamina-tion. It is extremely rare that unac-

ceptable residue levels are detected. Foods exceeding the limit are further analyzed by CFIA/Health Canada to determine if a product seizure or re-call is necessary. Test results that raise concerns are a very rare occurrence but regular testing ensures the safety of Canadian beef.

What are the benefits of using growth promotants in feedlot cattle?

Growth promotants enable pro-ducers to raise more beef, more rap-idly using less feed, which also have positive environmental implications including reduced fuel and fertilizer use and reduced manure and green-house gas production.

What would happen if the Ca-nadian beef industry stopped using growth promotants?

Feedlot production costs would be 8% higher if producers chose not to or were unable to use implants, ionophores or beta-agonists. To produce the same amount of Cana-dian beef without the use of growth promotants would require 12% more cattle, 10% more land, 11% more feed, and 4% more water. It would

also require 7% more fuel and fertil-izer. The reduced feed efficiency and more days to finish would also mean that the cattle would produce 10% more manure (with 10% more nitro-gen and 11% more phosphorus), and 10% more and greenhouse gasses in the process.

Margins are typically very tight for cattle feeders due to high costs for calves and feed, so the added expense may put most cattle feed-ers out of business. Added produc-tion costs in combination with lower supplies would considerably increase retail prices, making Canadian beef unaffordable for many families and uncompetitive in the world market.

Because the proper use of growth promotant technologies do not pose any scientifically-founded food safety concerns, discontinuing their use would have clear negative consequences for the Canadian beef industry and the environment with no obvious benefit for human health.

In ad dition to legislation such as the Criminal Code of Canada, Health of Animals Act and provincial animal care acts, Canada’s Code of Practice for the Care and Handling of Beef Cattle serves as the industry’s nation-al understanding of animal

Limousin bulls were tested among nine other breeds at the MIDLAND BULL TEST STATION under a 70 day individual Residual Feed Intake trial. The Limousin bulls proved to be 0.67 lbs (1.5 kg) more efficient at converting than the average of the 10 breeds.

LIMOUSIN FEEDER CATTLE EXCEL

A group of straight Limousin cattle from Wulf Limousin was put on a feed trial against Red Angus/Hereford cross commercial feeders.

The animals were fed for 174 days, starting in the Fall of 2009 through Spring 2010. The study was conducted by the University of Minnesota.

This table (below right) shows how the Limou-sin surpassed the commercial cattle for gain, dry matter intake, feed conver-sion and dressing percentage.

Calgary, AB - The Canadian Junior Angus Association (CJAA) is pleased to announce the remarkable success of the 2014 Guiding Outstanding Angus Leaders (GOAL) Conference held February 15-17, 2014. The momentum for the conference is at an all time high with 26 new participants from coast to coast attending.

“This year GOAL was a success on many levels,” said Stacey Domolewski, returning GOAL participant and active CJAA member. “Participants who were in attendance felt that the insightful knowledge they learned will be used upon returning home. The networking opportunities were second to none, with youth engaging with peers from around the country. With the outstanding attendance, especially new attendees, it’s easy to say the future of the Angus breed and the Junior Association are very bright.”

CJAA members participated in many events as well as workshops

throughout the weekend. Highlights from the event included motivational speaker Alvin Law, the showcasing of Angus Central, a shopping adventure to Irvine’s Tack & Western Wear, as well as an entertaining trip to Jubilation’s Dinner Theatre.

Industry leaders captivated Junior members through their strong knowledge of global agriculture. Art Froelich described an earlier interaction with Past President Bill Clinton who stated, “Every strong democracy stems from a strong farming industry.” Juniors felt empowered to be part of the global agriculture industry.

Along with the Conference, more than $13,000 was given away to deserving scholars and attendees courtesy of the Canadian Angus Foundation.

The GOAL Conference promotes leadership skills within the Angus breed. Junior members from all over the country attend this three-day event held in a different location each year. During the event, Juniors

hear from nationally recognized speakers, participate in workshops designed to improve their leadership

skills, get involved in teamwork activities, and develop beef and industry knowledge. Participants

are also given the opportunity to network and socialize with fellow Junior Angus members.

The Canadian Junior Angus Association is a group of Angus enthusiasts under the age of 21. GOAL is an annual networking and interactive function organized by the Canadian Junior Angus Association. It rotates to provinces throughout the country every February. This year there were 52 participants that took part in GOAL in Calgary, Alberta.

They also made a few purchases at the Ring Creek Farm dispersal, which they plan to expand on. Jarin and Amber are presently running 350 head of commercial cattle and will now be joining the purebred business.

The purebred business and Peace Country commercial producers will be the benefactors of this aggressive and progressive young couple’s entry into the business. Jarin has been following the breed around since he was 10 years old, and so is not new to the business.

Their two commercial pens of heifers were named Grand and Reserve Junior Champions at the recent Peace Country Beef Congress. We are looking forward to working together with Jarin, Amber and family in the coming years.

De� nitionsEPD (Expected Progeny Di� erences): are expressions of the relative genetic merit of beef cattle for various traits. EPDs are used to compare the predicted progeny performance between two bulls (or females) within a breed, regardless of age or herd location. EPDs are expressed in the actual units of measure for a given trait.Interim EPDs (indicated as PE+): are calculated using a calf’s sire’s and dam’s National EPDs plus the calf’s own performance data.Possible Change Table — EPDs are predictions of an animal’s breeding value for a given trait. As with any prediction, there is a margin of error, or possible change, associated with an EPD. When the accuracy is low, this margin for error is high. As more information (i.e. progeny data) becomes available, the margin of error becomes smaller.Percentile Table — used to quickly rank a sire or dam within the breed for a given trait.ACC (Accuracy): the reliability that can be placed on the EPD. An accuracy of close to 1.0 indicates higher reliability. Accuracy is impacted by the number of progeny and ancestral records included in the analysis.Active Sires/Dams — animals that have at least one progeny with a weaning weight recorded in the past two years.Black/Red Carrier — an animal whose coat colour is black, but carries the recessive gene for red coat colour.......................................................................................................(BW) Birth Weight EPD: expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny compared to that of other sires.(CED) Calving Ease Direct: the average di� erence in ease with which a sire’s calves will be born when he is bred to � rst calf heifers. The higher the number the more probability that his calves will be born unassisted.(CEM) Calving Ease Maternal: is expressed as a di� erence in percentage of unassisted births with a higher value indicating greater probability of unassisted births in � rst-calf daughters. It predicts the average ease with which a sire’s daughters will calve as � rst-calf heifers when compared to daughters of other sires.(CW) Carcass Weight: expressed in pounds, this EPD predicts di� erences in the average hot carcass weight in progeny. This EPD is calculated using birth weight, weaning weight and yearling weight EPDs as well as any carcass data available.(FAT) Fat/Back Fat: expressed in inches, is a predictor of the di� erences in back fat thickness at the 12th rib (as measured between the 12th and 13th ribs) of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires. The higher the EPD the more back fat expected on a sires calves.(HPG) Heifer Pregnancy: the percent probability in a bull’s daughters’ ability to conceive and calve as two year olds. Just like the stayability EPD, heifer pregnancy EPDs are expressed in terms of a percentage di� erence. For example, two heifer pregnancy EPDs, 5 and 10, di� er by 5%. Daughters of the bull with the EPD of 10 are 5% more likely to conceive than daughters of the other bull.(MARB) Marbling: a prediction of future

progeny’s performance for carcass marbling scores. This EPD incorporates both ultrasound and carcass data. The higher the EPD the more intramuscular fat expected in the rib eye of a sire’s calves.(MILK) Milk: is an indicator of milking ability in daughters. It represents the di� erences in weaning weights of calves due to the amount of milk produced by their mothers. It is expressed in pounds of calf weaned. The higher the EPD the more weaning pounds a sires daughters will add to her calves via milk.(PE) Parental Average: indicated as PE, is an average of a calf’s sire’s and dam’s National EPDs. These have minimal accuracy as they do not incorporate the calf’s own performance.(REA) Ribeye Area: expressed in square inches, is a predictor of the di� erence in ribeye area of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires. The larger the EPD the larger the expected rib eye area.(SC) Scrotal Circumference: expressed in centimetres, is a predictor of the di� erence in transmitting ability for scrotal size compared to that of other sires. Scrotal Circumference is an indicator of both growth and male fertility. Larger scrotal size is related to increased sperm production and semen quality, and in daughters’ younger age to puberty, younger age to calving and higher pregnancy rate.(STAY) Stayability: the percent probability of daughters staying in production to at least 6 years of age. Stayability EPDs for bulls are the prediction of the genetic di� erences between their daughters probability of staying in production in a herd to at least the age of 6 years. Given the primary emphasis on pregnancy in most herds, stayability is a measure of sustained fertility. The higher the EPD the more likely a sire’s daughter will remain in production in a herd past 6 years.(TM) Total Maternal: is a combination of the weaning weight and milk EPDs. It is calculated as: 1/2 Weaning Weight EPD + Milk EPD = Total Maternal. This EPD represents the di� erences in weaning weights between calves due to mothering and milking ability of their dams.(WW) Weaning Weight: expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Weaning weight is an indicator of growth from birth to weaning (205 days of age). The calf’s growth during this period is in� uenced by its own ability to grow plus its mother’s maternal abilities. The higher the EPD, the heavier, on average, the calves of a sire will be at weaning.(YW) Yearling Weight: expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires. The higher the EPD, the heavier, on average, the calves of a sire will be at yearling.(YG) Yield Grade: expressed in USDA yield grade score, this EPD predicts di� erences in carcass yield grade score to be expected from progeny. This EPD is a ratio or summary of the rib eye area and fat EPDs. In order to simplify the process, the CAA has some easy steps to transfer the animals from your herd to the new owner.

The process starts prior to the animals being sold. There are a few different ways to verify the informa-tion.

• Via the web site Animal Inquiry • Registration certificates on hand

(if available) • Contacting the office • Checking your e-stored certifi-

cates Information to verify: • Verify the animal’s registration

status. The registration status is listed to the right of the birth date on the search page at cdnangus.ca.

• Be sure the animal is tattooed correctly.

• Check that the animal’s ID is the same as the animal being sold.

• Is the animal’s name spelled cor-rectly?

• Has the correct sire and / or dam been listed?

• Is the category of the animal cor-rect?

For the Sale: • If ownership, possession and/or

semen rights will be retained by the current owner, make certain it is clear what that entails.

• CAA suggests referring to your Breeder’s Handbook for the Breeder’s Guarantee Guidelines.

• Be sure to transfer animals to the new owners.

The seller has 60 days from the date of sale to submit the transfers in order to receive the price break. All other transfers must be made within six months as per the Animal Pedi-gree Act.

• All transfers are processed in order of date received.

• A rush is available for $20 per head and must be clearly marked as such.

• All applicable fees are the respon-sibility of the seller.

• If needed for a show, allow enough time for processing - issue date of the registration certificate CANNOT be changed.

Options to transfer animals:

1. Certificate of Transfer • On the back of the certificate

of registration is: the certificate of transfer, the seller authorization, a place for the buyer information and the date of sale. If a female is sold bred, the breeding information must be added. If a calf is sold at side, and has not been registered, it may be submitted for registration as well. (Calves at side are eligible for registra-tion provided the seller has met all the requirements for registration in the CAA Rules and Regulations.)

• Co-Owned Animals: Please complete the certificate of transfer on the back of the certificate of registra-tion. All current owners must sign the transfer.

2. E-stored Certificates • Members may either complete

the CAAFORM16 or provide the transfer information (in writing) via email or fax.

Information required: • Animal to be transferred • Date of Sale • Who the animal is being trans-

ferred to (a CAA membership number if possible)

• Breeding information on bred females

3. If you submit a list of your buyers and their information prior to the transfers, we can issue the account numbers for you to keep in your records.

Benefits of Transfer: 1. Transfers received within 60 days

from the sale date are completed at a cost of $12.

2. We will remove transferred ani-mals from your inventory.

3. Gives the new owner a certifi-cate of registration.

4. Enables the new owner to participate in the Canadian Angus Rancher Endorsed program.

Canadian Salers - The Balanced Breed

Salers are considered to be one of the oldest European breeds, whose roots can be traced to 16,500-year-old cave drawings found near the town of Salers in the South Central region of France, the Auvergne, in the heart of the volcanic area of the Massif Central. The rough terrain, poor soil and harsh climate combined with the area’s isolation contributed to a genetically pure breed of cattle with bred-in range ability to thrive almost entirely on native grasses in the summer and roughage diet in winter.

The Salers breed in North America has evolved into an outstanding maternal beef breed. The cattle are usually solid red or black, and are naturally horned but polled bloodlines have been developed. Salers females possess a larger than average pelvic area and calve easily to the service of larger terminal cross sires. They are excellent mothers with good milk production, are very fertile and re-breed quickly.

Salers bulls are aggressive breeders and sire calves of moderate birth weight, with a strong will to live and good growth. Salers cross steers perform well in feedlots and have exceptional carcass yield and quality.

These traits have made Salers the choice of many commercial cattlemen striving to maximize production without increasing management or labour. Salers are a balanced breed, which is optimum in all aspects of beef production.

Salers were first imported into Canada in 1972 with the Salers Association of Canada being established in 1973. Canada continues to be an excellent source for Salers genetics worldwide.

Three broad categories are presented for comparison. Active Sires are those bulls that have sired at least 1 calf recorded in the last 2 years. Active Dams are those cows with calves in the last 2 years and provide a comparison for females in use in your cowherd. Calves are those animals born in the last 2 years and allow for comparison of yearling and 2 year old animals to the population. For animals with EPDs that fall between the published ranges, use the lower value. For example: An active Sire with a YW EPD of 87.0 would rank in the top 25% of the breed for YW Active Sires – Averages & Percentile Breakdown. Number (Num) is the number of active sires evaluated for each trait.
