FOURTH SUNDAY OF LENT

First Reading: 2 Chronicles 36:14-16, 19-23 The people of Judah practiced many abominations, even polluting God’s temple in Jerusalem. They mocked the messengers he sent among them, until he grew so angry he delivered them to the King of the Chaldeans. Those who weren’t killed were exiled and became servants for seventy years. Cyrus, King of Persia, was ordered to build a temple to God in Jerusalem, and he freed the servants as God had inspired him to do. Second Reading: Ephesians 2:4-10 Paul declares that God brought us to life in Jesus, though we had been dead from our sins. He reminds us that it was not a reward for our good service so no one should take credit. Instead, we must remember that it was not our doing, but a sign of God’s mercy and love for us. Gospel: John 3:14-21 God so loved the world, he sent us his only Son so that all who believed would have eternal life in him. The light came into the world, but those who were wicked avoided it, for fear that their evil deeds would be exposed. But those who believed were unafraid of the light, where it would be clear that their deeds were done in God.

PHYSICIAN-ASSISTED SUICIDE CAMPAIGN PETITION

In their continuing effort to defeat the Physician-Assisted Suicide legislation, the CT Catholic Conference is requesting your assistance and cooperation as they continue their campaign to oppose this legislation. In order to coordinate this effort, we are asking parishioners to sign a petition urging the Judiciary Committee to strongly oppose Physician-Assisted Suicide when the committee members debate and vote on this legislative proposal. Please stop by to sign the petition on the table located in the back of the church on your way out today. Also available is a list of Frequently Asked Questions regarding Physician-Assisted Suicide in Connecticut.

In today's Gospel, we learn that Jesus made up for all our sins by dying on the Cross. It wasn't fair that He should die for sins He didn't commit, but Jesus wanted to give us new life and sent His Holy Spirit so that we could be strong enough to say no to sin. The Gospel says that if we believe all that Jesus did for us, we will someday live with Him in Heaven. Images of darkness and light are used in John’s Gospel to help us reflect on the forgiveness of sins we receive through Christ. Because Jesus died for our salvation, we do not hide our sins from God. Instead, in the Sacrament of Reconciliation, we confess our sins to God, confident that God forgives us. During Lent, many people take the opportunity to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation so that they can experience the joy of God’s forgiveness!

The Pretzel - A Reminder to Pray!

Pretzels began in the 6th century at an

Italian monastery. A monk was prepar-

ing unleavened bread for Lent and

twisted the scraps of bread dough to

resemble arms in prayer. He named his

creation Pretiola, a word meaning little

reward, and gave it as a treat to the

children who recited their prayers.

“For we are His handiwork, created in Christ Jesus for good works.”

Ephesians 2:10

The 4th Sunday of Lent is sometimes called Laetare Sunday. Laetare is a Latin word that means “Rejoice.”Even as we observe our Lenten sacrifices, we Rejoice in anticipation of the Joy that will be ours at Easter!

During the Lenten Season we are especially blessed by the Giving Hearts of our Children who have shared these Gifts of Love on their Offertory Envelopes:

Helped my Grandma; Said my prayers; Did my hair with my Mom; Spent time with friends; Helped at home; Practiced piano; Helped my sick Grandmother; Helped at barn; Make my bed every morning; Set and cleared the table for dinner; Cleaned my room; Helped Mom fold clothes; Received my First Reconciliation; Prayed at Stations of the Cross; Took care of my baby sister while my Mom was busy.

We also thank our Confirmations Students and their Fami-lies for their generous food donations to the St. Elizabeth House Dinner. May God bless you all for your kindness!
